WugBot at WP:GANR

Could the bot be set to update Wikipedia:Good article nominations/Report at 01:00 UTC, as it used to, instead of the current 11:08? It is then much easier to update backlog drive statistics. Many thanks, ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 04:50, 31 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from Amezie83 (09:04, 31 January 2024)

Hello! Just saw I have a mentor, that's awesome! I got the suggestion to translate, did that with my first article. That's were my questions comes in: I noticed Wikipedia takes the sources from the original language, I can imagine not everybody understands Dutch, lol, would it be worthwhile to search for sources in English to add/exchange the current ones? --Amezie83 (talk) 09:04, 31 January 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Question from Turkanet01 (08:29, 28 January 2024)

Dear please help amend TURKEY as TÜRKİYE in http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Turkey as agreed on UN article on https://turkiye.un.org/en/184798-turkeys-name-changed-t%C3%BCrkiye --Turkanet01 (talk) 08:29, 28 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi Turkanet01, and welcome to Wikipedia! Wikipedia uses the name most commonly used in English language sources. Most English language sources still refer to the country as Turkey despite the official name change which is why our article does the same. If more sources like the Associated Press or the Los Angeles Times start using the new spelling, then Wikipedia will eventually change the article name but not before. Let me know if you have other questions, and happy editing! Wug·a·po·des 19:49, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
This is to be far from the official facts. Huge wikipedia must act within official decisions. Most Turkish people still waits Wikipedia's correction for this ugly homophony which makes our country's name discredited. 85.107.84.245 (talk) 18:37, 13 February 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. February music

The image, taken on a cemetery last year after the funeral of a distant but dear family member, commemorates today, with thanks for their achievements, four subjects mentioned on the Main page and Vami_IV, a friend here. Listen to music by Tchaikovsky (an article where one of the four is pictured), sung by today's subject (whose performance on stage I enjoyed two days ago). -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:33, 20 February 2024 (UTC)

Listen to music from Ukraine if you like, - I heard it in 2022, and the November concert (at a different church) raised a truckload of winter clothes. My story today is also from my life: I heard the singer in 3 of the 4 mentioned musical items. I sang in yesterday's. - Rinaldo (opera) premiered OTD, DYK? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:04, 24 February 2024 (UTC)

Question from Hbar663 (04:16, 15 March 2024)

Hi, I just published my first edit on the page for Marjorie Lees at: http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Marjorie_Lees and I made a note that I am adding a reference. It appears someone else immediately deleted my 1 sentence addition because it did not have a reference. Is this normal? --Hbar663 (talk) 04:16, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

Hi Hbar663 and welcome to Wikipedia! I saw your most recent edit has a reference which supports the text, so thank you for your contribution! In general, we have very high standards for articles about people because of the harm incorrect information can cause, so many editors prefer to revert any addition of information that doesn't have a reference. You did the right thing though: you made another edit which fixed the problem the other editor had. It happens pretty often and it doesn't mean you've done something wrong. Something similar happened to me a few weeks ago on an article I was writing, and just like you did, I made another edit to address the original concern. It's how collaboration tends to work around here, and you seem to have a knack for it already! I look forward to more contributions, and let me know if you have other questions. Hi! Can u tell me how to report IP addresses. A person is continuously making wrong edits on a cricketer --K-bots224 (talk) 08:23, 9 March 2024 (UTC)

Hi K-bots224, you can try WP:ANI for general reports of misconduct. If it's multiple IPs on a single page, you can try WP:RFPP as well. Wug·a·po·des 19:51, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

Hi Wugapodes :) I'm surprised I haven't asked you this before (I've checked three times) but... are you interested in pitching in at User:Clovermoss/Editor reflections? If you're not, feel free to pass. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 17:12, 9 March 2024 (UTC)

Hi Clovermoss, nice to hear from you! I'd seen the page early on in the initiative and thought it was cool, but it's grown a lot since then (an understatement). My first thought just now was "wow, this is a really cool data set", so I'm a bit research-brained at the moment if you can't tell. I do want to contribute, but I need some time to reflect on the answers. They're good questions, so I'd rather give them a good response rather than whatever ticks the box. Wug·a·po·des 20:03, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
That's fine, feel free to take your time. I plan on keeping it open pretty much indefinitely so there's no deadline or anything to worry about. People are also welcome to edit their answers after the fact. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 20:30, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

DYK for Hermann Collitz

On 21 March 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Hermann Collitz, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Woodrow Wilson, Hermann Collitz, and Carey Thomas all taught at Bryn Mawr College before becoming presidents? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Hermann Collitz. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Hermann Collitz), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Question from JoshuaKennethGray (17:48, 22 March 2024)

Thanks so much for reaching out! I am wondering how do I create a page for myself. I am starting to get more recognition in business and want to have a page for people to get basic information on me --JoshuaKennethGray (talk) 17:48, 22 March 2024 (UTC)

Hi JoshuaKennethGray you should not create a page for yourself or your business because it goes against our conflict of interest policy. There are a lot of website builders that would be a more effective way to communicate with potential clients than Wikipedia (I've seen a lot of ads for squarespace recently, but if you search the web you'll probably find others that might fit your needs better). Wikipedia articles aren't controlled by any particular person, so even if an article were created for you, there's no guarantee that it will represent you in the way you would want.
