How can I help with the cite clean-up

[edit]

I'm probably to blame for a number of the citation problems. On the articles on my watchlist, they were introduced by a citation cleaning tool I used. It has been fixed, but I don't know how you're cleaning them and which list you're working from or how you're finding the articles with cite errors. Walter Görlitz (talk) 21:04, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Is that the "dead-url" issue? Monkbot is clearing those as they come. I'm working though Category:CS1 errors: markup at the moment, 75% there in terms of numbers but the last few thousand are going to need more work (almost everything before "N") so that would be useful. Category:CS1 errors: script parameters is down to about 500 more tricky items, if you fancy giving that a go? All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 23:36, 3 November 2019 (UTC).[reply]
It is a shame though that you are simply stripping wiki markup without apparently looking carefully at what you're doing. This edit, for example, leaves newspaper names in |publisher= when in both cases the parameter name should have changed to |newspaper= and you left the extraneous word via when that should have become |via= (and, The Hollywood Reporter is a magazine so {{cite magazine}} and |magazine= ...). I do wish you were doing better work because clearly you are motivated to do the work.
Trappist the monk (talk) 00:10, 4 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Fixing up references is a huge task, splitting and renaming parameters, is in my view, a separate issue. I am concerned that we have red errors on pages where, for the reader at least, there is no problem. This is not the only case where the COINS tail is wagging the encyclopedic dog. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 09:02, 4 November 2019 (UTC).[reply]
No kidding? I know that fixing citations is a big task. Getting parameter values and template names right has been made more difficult because you are simply stripping-off the inappropriate wiki markup and not addressing the underlying problem. The inappropriate markup errors help to identify those templates that need work because cs1|2 could put them all in a category to work from. Parameter values with markup have been invaluable in the work that Monkbot/task 14 has been doing. Without those indicators, there isn't much of a simple way to find and properly fix cs1 templates that use |publisher= where they should be using one of the work parameters. Yeah there are various searches but they can be problematic. Those templates that you have 'fixed' are still broken because periodicals are not rendered correctly when they are named using |publisher=. And you will notice, that in all of this conversation, I have said nothing about COinS though, since you have raised, and obviously recognize that there is the metadata issue, failure on your part to replace |publisher= in a periodical template with an appropriate periodical parameter, omits that data from the metadata so that remains broken after you 'fixes'. So you have treated the symptom and not the disease.
Trappist the monk (talk) 17:58, 4 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Tail wagging the dog, indeed. It seems to me to be a case of inconsequential changes. -- Ohc ¡digame! 20:48, 4 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't move short descriptions below hatnotes, as you did here. According to MOS:ORDER, the original order of first the short description, then the hatnote, was the correct one. Fram (talk) 13:13, 6 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This was pretty much written WP:BOLDly without talk page consensus. While I am inclined to agree, there are good arguments for other orders too. I think this is really not something we need to worry about too much. Particularly I would recommend it is not something you should worry about in other editors. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 13:48, 6 November 2019 (UTC).[reply]
Oh, I don't worry when others put it in a different place initially. However, changing the order already in the article when this has no benefit at all and goes against what is in the MOS seems something to be avoided. Bot-like edits which imposed your preferred layout (even if combined with useful parts in the same edit) is one of the issues you have got into trouble with in the past. Dropping a neutral note about one such thing which now popped up on my watchlist may be something you would recommend against, but I guess it would be smarter to invite such notes and follow the advice. A tag has been placed on Category:Redirects from Ilokano-language terms requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! Date formats inquiry

[edit]

Hi - May I ask what method/tool are you using for your date format edits? This is mainly for my own interest as I like to learn, plus the changes are clearly useful maintenence and not contentious. That also leads to my follow up question – Is there a way to filter watchlists so automated tasks like these aren't viewed? I can filter out auto tasks performed by bots but since you are human that won't work in this case. :) Many thanks -- Ham105 (talk) 11:31, 11 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Your interesting edits: changing the order in which reference footnotes are listed

[edit]

Hello Rich, I notice you have swapped the order in which a couple of footnotes appear in the articles Nurragi railway station and Milang railway line.

It's of no great import, but I'm curious as to the reason. When entering more than one reference at the end of a paragraph I usually put the more substantive reference first. So I'm curious whether there are other policies or factors I'm not familiar with.

While I'm here: one change somewhere consisted only of removing a space between the end of "</ref>" and the end of a paragraph. I had thought that such spaces were of no account. Do you have some info on this? Cheers, SCHolar44 (talk) 00:51, 13 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Weather compensation has been nominated for speedy deletion. Hand-written note.

[edit]

Hi Rich Farmbrough,
That article has been nominated for speedy deletion under the WP:A1 criterion here.
As far as I can see, it may be a topic related to air conditioning and/or boilermaking. I would edit the article myself, but I simply don't have the knowledge required to improve it.

Weather compensation moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Weather compensation, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. ——SN54129 10:59, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

[edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

A barnstar for you!

[edit]
The Original Barnstar
Richard: This is a question about the article about David Gelbaum. I notice that you have edited it, and I believe that at some point you inserted the date of his death. David was a dear friend of my childhood and youth, but I had lost contact except for an exchange of letters in 2008. Although David was a noted and somewhat controversial philanthropist, I can find no record via Google searches of his death. No obituary. No newspaper citations. If you were the contributor who inserted his date of death (Sept. 30, 2018), can you tell me the source of that information. Do you have any other information about the circumstances of his death? -- Bill Horns. Hornsw (talk) 22:25, 27 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Date of death was added by an IP here. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 10:28, 28 November 2019 (UTC).[reply]
This page seems to support the death date. But I am not convinced. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 10:34, 28 November 2019 (UTC).[reply]

Same Name actresses

[edit]

Hi Rich. I made a draft of ayesha khan who is a senior actress but there was another actress with the same name so i add (Sr.) with so that no one could get confused. can you check it Draft:Ayesha Khan (Sr.). (39.43.119.231 (talk) 15:35, 28 November 2019 (UTC))[reply]

Hi, I think the title needs to be changed. Jr. and Sr. have specific meanings. Also can you look at the changes I have made to some of your existing drafts, for example using the full term "show business" instead of "showbiz".
