Check logic for ASIN-> ISBN conversions

[edit]

See this. There likely are others. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 21:01, 2 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 21:03, 2 June 2017 (UTC).[reply]
This is frustrating: even World Cat (OCLC) has it listed as an ISBN. It doesn't obey the ISBN rules though, 978-630-... is not yet released. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 21:57, 2 June 2017 (UTC).[reply]
It is not generating a checksum error message, and it clearly works, so we should probably just live with it. It seems likely that this is the ISBN on the packaging. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:57, 2 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have searched far and wide, the closest I could find was some British DVDs that list 10 digits of the EAN - dropping the leading 50 and the training check digit. I will try to inventory the rest of the strange ASINs over the weekend.
But indeed living with it might be the solution.

Wikipedia:Committee for getting things done, a page which you created or substantially contributed to (or which is in your userspace), has been nominated for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; you may participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:Committee for getting things done and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Wikipedia:Committee for getting things done during the discussion but should not remove the miscellany for deletion template from the top of the page; such a removal will not end the deletion discussion. RfC Announce: Wikimedia referrer policy

[edit]

In February of 2016 the Wikimedia foundation started sending information to all of the websites we link to that allow the owner of the website (or someone who hacks the website, or law enforcement with a search warrant / subpoena) to figure out what Wikipedia page the user was reading when they clicked on the external link.

The WMF is not bound by Wikipedia RfCs, but we can use an advisory-only RfC to decide what information, if any, we want to send to websites we link to and then put in a request to the WMF. I have posted such an advisory-only RfC, which may be found here:

Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#RfC: Wikimedia referrer policy

Please comment so that we can determine the consensus of the Wikipedia community on this matter. --Guy Macon (talk) 21:33, 10 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

changing "cite magazine" to "cite journal"

[edit]

Please do not change "cite magazine" to "cite journal" - they are two different templates resulting in different layouts. Tewapack (talk) 19:39, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

One used to redirect to the other, so Rich might be using an old replace algorithm. --Izno (talk) 20:39, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question for you

[edit]

Out of curiosity, aren't edits such as these considered purely cosmetic, since they don't actually change the rendered output of the page? Primefac (talk) 20:58, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Primefac These are very good edits. Bare filenames are generally better than using explicit File. This is the reason why we have tracking categories. These edits are not cosmetic. -- Magioladitis (talk) 23:37, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Primefac See Category:Infobox military person image param needs updating for example. -- Magioladitis (talk) 23:40, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

But what about this one?[1]
It does nothing except add whitespace to the wikisource. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:41, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Different question. :) -- Magioladitis (talk) 23:44, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Magioladitis, you have an amazing way of completely ignoring the question. There is zero rendered difference between these two edits or these two edits. I never asked if it was an improvement. I asked why Rich was doing purely cosmetic editing when he's explicitly not allowed to do it. I thought I'd get his side of things before going to AN. Primefac (talk) 23:46, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Primefac COSMETICBOT says: "Changes that are typically considered substantive affect something visible to readers and consumers of Wikipedia, such as [...] removing a deleted category, updating a template parameter, changing whitespace in bulleted vertical lists". In this case a parameter was updated. -- Magioladitis (talk) 23:49, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I am happy that more and more editors want to help in Maintenance categories. Thanks Rich -- Magioladitis (talk) 23:51, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Key phrase there is "affect something visible to readers and consumers of Wikipedia" - it's a hidden category, and so there is no visible change to the page. If you're going to throw policy at me, at least get it right. Primefac (talk) 23:52, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The word "visible" should be lifted. Thanks for noticing. It's against the spirit of the consensus. -- Magioladitis (talk) 23:54, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You'll need an RFC to remove that, since it seems to be the entire reason for the policy. Primefac (talk) 23:56, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Primefac Just fixed it. We already have bots that the only thing they do is adding dates in tags. Feel free to comment at Wikipedia_talk:Bot_policy#Obvious_mistake -- Magioladitis (talk) 23:59, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It's not considered cosmetic if it adds, removes or changes a maintenance category. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 07:07, 12 June 2017 (UTC).[reply]

Wrong redirect of person

[edit]

Hi Rich Farmbrough, You have created a redirect for Pierre Jourdan to Louis Jourdan. However these are two different persons. Pierre Jourdan is born 1932 in Cannes, mainly a director but also an actor [2] and Louis Jourdan is born 1921 in Marseille, only an actor [3]. Can you please either delete or start a stub on the former? Thanks. Hoverfish Talk 20:47, 18 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, I'll have a go at this tonight if I have time. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 08:18, 19 June 2017 (UTC).[reply]

LPK poster

[edit]

Hello, Please can you upload this image (http://cdn1.marathistars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Lagna-Pahave-Karun-Movie-Poster.jpg) on Wikipedia and add it in the infobox of Lagna Pahave Karun. The image is the official poster of the film. I can't upload it as I m not auto confirmed please can you upload the image for me. I have also requested its addition on Wikipedia:Files for upload but I have lack of patience and seems like it will take time otherwise I could have uploaded the image after getting auto confirmed. Please complete my request. Thanks in advance. Regards, PoojaDhinchak (talk) 11:52, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
