Administrators' newsletter – December 2017

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2017).

Administrator changes

added Joe Roe
readded JzG
removed EricorbitPercevalThinggTristanbVioletriga

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, a new section has been added to the username policy which disallows usernames containing emoji, emoticons or otherwise "decorative" usernames, and usernames that use any non-language symbols. Administrators should discuss issues related to these types of usernames before blocking.

Technical news

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • Over the last few months, several users have reported backlogs that require administrator attention at WP:ANI, with the most common backlogs showing up on WP:SPI, WP:AIV and WP:RFPP. It is requested that all administrators take some time during this month to help clear backlogs wherever possible. It should be noted that AIV reports are not always valid; however, they still need to be cleared, which may include needing to remind users on what qualifies as vandalism.
  • The Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative is conducting a survey for English Wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works (i.e. which problems it deals with well and which problems it struggles with). If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be emailed to you via Special:EmailUser.

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

[edit]

Hello, Rich Farmbrough. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Rich, when I signed in and added a death date for Judge Finney, the history signed this as User:Nicholemacgregor, which is not even a user page. What's up? Thanks, Beth Wellington (talk) 14:33, 4 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That's strange. I assume both edits are yours? [1] and [2]. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 14:39, 4 December 2017 (UTC).[reply]

Mountain Meadows Massacre

[edit]

Rich, There is a request at Talk:Mountain Meadows massacre to change the capitalization of the article title. As you were the one who moved the page to it's current title WAAAAY back in 2005, care to chime with you believe the current title is the better option? Long comment and AWB

[edit]

Hi. Regarding your recent edits to surname SIAs where you attempted to add long comments using AWB, please make sure to double-check your work before saving the edits. I caught multiple cases where you typed "subt" instead of "subst" to add the long comment to these pages. I hope this wasn't an honest mistake. jd22292 (Jalen D. Folf) (talk • contribs) 16:34, 13 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I presume you mean "was"... though I can't see what else it could reasonably be. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 00:02, 31 December 2017 (UTC).[reply]

While you have corrected this error in your script, you seem to be making a lot of other unwanted changes in it as well. Please don't

  • Add a second space between "." and "Notable"[3][4]
  • Add a space between "*" and whatever follows[5][6]
  • change ordinals in numbers to ordinals in words[7][8]
  • write ninteenth, an error you had in your scripts years ago already[9][10]
  • don't change U.S. to US (unless both forms are already present in the article)
  • don't change "TV" to television[11][12][13]
  • don't italicize "c." (for circa)[14]

These changes (the above links are just the first few examples in most cases) are not required by the WP:MOS (many are explicitly mentioned as changes that should not be made), and when a version of a page is in a MOS-compliant version you shouldn't change it to your preferred version withut another compelling reason to do so (consistency across pages is not a compelling reason). Fram (talk) 20:57, 14 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your comments. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 00:02, 31 December 2017 (UTC).[reply]

Why are you suddenly linking to surname with every edit? —Xezbeth (talk) 10:31, 15 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Surname seemed worth linking to. The phrase "family name" is widely used these days and may mean younger people appreciate a link. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 00:02, 31 December 2017 (UTC).[reply]

Please come and help...

Should MoS shortcut redirects be sorted to certain specific maintenance categories? An Rfc has been opened on this talk page to answer that question. Your sentiments would be appreciated!  Paine Ellsworth  put'r there  17:29, 14 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

What language do they speak in Persia? listed at Redirects for discussion

[edit]

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect What language do they speak in Persia?. Since you had some involvement with the What language do they speak in Persia? redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion if you have not already done so. Speedy deletion nomination of Klook

[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Klook, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Nomination of Klook for deletion

[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Klook is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Klook until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. DGG ( talk ) 09:03, 30 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Genealogy - newsletter No.5 -2017

[edit]
Newsletter Nr 5, 2017-12-30, for WikiProject Genealogy (and Wikimedia genealogy project on Meta)

Participation:

This is the fifth newsletter sent by mass mail to members in Wikipedia:WikiProject Genealogy, to everyone who voted a support for establishing a potential Wikimedia genealogy project on meta, and anyone who during the years showed an interest in genealogy on talk pages and likewise.

(To discontinue receiving Project Genealogy newsletters, please see below)

A demo wiki is up and running!

Dear members of WikiProject Genealogy, this will be the last newsletter for 2017, but maybe the most important one!

You can already now try out the demo for a genealogy wiki at https://tools.wmflabs.org/genealogy/wiki/Main_Page and try out the functions. You will find parts of the 18th Pharao dynasty and other records submitted by the 7 first users, and it would be great if you would add some records.

And with those great news we want to wish you a creative New Year 2018!

Don't want newsletters? If you wish to opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself from the mailing list or alternatively to opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Opted-out of message delivery to your user talk page.

Cheers from your WikiProject Genealogy coordinator Dan Koehl.
