Macandrew
[edit]Hi, I'm doing the ACR for Henry Macandrew right now, for which you provided some useful additions. It has been brought up that the citation for "Court and Society". Belfast News-Letter. Belfast. 5 December 1919. p. 7 doesn't have a link. Do you know where you got this from? Thanks, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 16:00, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Pickersgill-Cunliffe, it would have been through the British Newspaper Archive. My membership has lapsed in my absence but you can still see snippets in the free search. The article comes up in a search for "Macandrew" on 5 December 1919. The search also shows a similar story covering the same subject on page 6 of The Scotsman. Hope that helps - Dumelow (talk) 16:14, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- The text of the Belfast News-Letter article is "Buckingham Palace, Thursday. The King held an investiture in the ball-room of the Palace at 11 o'clock this morning ... Miss Esther MacAndrew had the honour of being received by the King, when his Majesty handed to her as next-of-kin the Insignia of a Knight Commander of Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Military Division, awarded to her father, the late Major-General Henry John Milnes MacAndrew". From which I see I have made a slight error in the date, the Thursday preceding would have been the 4 December - Dumelow (talk) 16:19, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks very much. I don't have a membership either so I don't think it's possible to provide a useful link in the citation unfortunately. I've updated the date too. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 16:24, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- No worries. I think the cite template lets you put a quote of the original text in there, I've done that before when asked at FAC. Inverness College had a tempestuous existence, known variously as Northern Counties Collegiate School, Inverness Collegiate School, Inverness College and The College, Inverness. It was based at what is now the Highland Council Headquarters and folded shortly after the First World War. I see I have just missed your RFA, which was wildly successful, congratulations! - Dumelow (talk) 16:41, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- I'd been struggling to figure out what exactly Inverness College was! And thanks very much. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 18:28, 22 June 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for the kind words about my first ILR excursion. UK paper is a bit harder to work with than US paper in terms of article depth, but I have Broadcast through my institutional ProQuest. When I saw that a lot of Newport newspaper was being added, and I saw the state of that article, I saw an obvious DYK project that could fix what turned out to be a longstanding error. I added it in, so does it count as new now or what do I have to do?ThaFDA (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 14:58, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
- Hi ThaFDA, thanks for your contribution to the article. Unfortunately under rules to appear in the DYK section the article itself has to be newly created, significantly expanded (ie. more than 5x increased in length) or recently listed as a WP:Good Article to meet the criteria. Unfortunately Basket Case (song) doesn't come under any of these categories. If you want it to appear in DYK your best bet is probably to try to take it through the Good Article process. Otherwise if you have an interesting fact on another song that doesn't have an article you could look to create one and nominate it? - Dumelow (talk) 15:09, 11 September 2024 (UTC)

- Great work with this article. One of my more obscure interests is British preparations for nuclear war during the Cold War, and I'd only vaguely heard of this organisation. It seems that there isn't much on it, so this article is a very useful resource. Nick-D (talk) 09:00, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks Nick-D. I can't remember how I came across it but it's been on my to-do list for a while; I developed a bit of an interest into the field after watching The War Game. - Dumelow (talk) 09:13, 16 September 2024 (UTC)

[edit]I am having trouble turing this Draft:Melancholy (sculpture) into an article. Before I give up I wondered if you had any ideas about where to find RS for the topic. Reminds me of Gallos Bruxton (talk) 00:52, 7 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Bruxton, I coincidentally knocked out a short article on the sculpture Growing Form recently. I had a look for sources on Melancholy but doesn't seem to be much out there other than posts saying "look at this cool sculpture". Unfortunately this is the case for many sculptures unless they get news coverage when they are installed. I'd feel free to release it into Mainspace as a stub. It definitely exists and is covered in some reliable sources so should survive any deletion challenge - Dumelow (talk) 08:03, 7 October 2024 (UTC)

Thank you, nice! - My story today is about a composer and choir conductor, listen to his Lamento. - My story on 13 October was about a Bach cantata. As this place works, it's on the Main page now because of the date (but Bach wrote it for the 20th Sunday, not the Tuesday after the 21st Sunday after Trinity). I sort of like it because today is the birth date of my grandfather who loved and grew dahlias like those pictured. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:18, 22 October 2024 (UTC)

Hi Dumelow. Hope you are well :) I wonder when you have a spare mo, if you would be able to review the "Military career" section of the above article. I am hoping to get it promoted to FA soon. Cheers! AA (talk) 19:45, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi AA, all well thanks. Interestingly the 1899 Hart's Army List has Captain Edward George Wynyard of the Welsh Regiment "was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for attempting to save a Swiss peasant in Lake Davos, Switzerland, on the 9th December 1893, when the lake was frozen over. Captain Wynyard nearly lost his own life in the attempt, and when rescued was insensible." - Dumelow (talk) 21:14, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- That's about all I've found, looking for gaps for his promotions (the strange transfer to the Middlesex Regiment in his militia service I wasn't able to resolve). You ought to lose the regimental numbers of the 8th and 41st as these were done away with by the Cardwell reforms in 1881. The Welch Regiment used the modern spelling "Welsh" from the reforms until 1920. His 1916 appointment was to a works battalion of the Middlesex, I suspect this would have been the 29th battalion which was transferred to the Labour Corps (and looks like Wynyard also) in mid 1917. The other two works battalions I know about (and just finished an article on) were formed from enemy aliens or their descendants and remained with the regiment throughout the war - Dumelow (talk) 21:38, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- Cheers! Most helpful :) I think what surprises me the most is the gap between his retirement in 1903, aged 42, to his return to service in WW1 aged 53. I'd imagine he has to be one of the oldest 'lower-ranked' officers serving at the time? I've dropped the 8th and 41st regimental numbers and changed Welch to Welsh. AA (talk) 21:42, 29 October 2024 (UTC)

Just wanted to say, nice article! I'm glad you got to it rather than it languishing a long way down my to-do list. There's enough material for an FA if you had thoughts of taking it that way. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:07, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi HJ, I always like to get something on DYK for the 11th and Remembrance Sunday. I've been thinking about taking more articles through FAC, but it's been a few years now since I've darkened their door. Perhaps once I've got a couple of articles in my usual line through. Do feel free to take it further yourself if you're in the mood! - Dumelow (talk) 20:40, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- It's always nice when we can have a thematic main page. Mells War Memorial is TFA on the 11th, which is pleasing. Not sure I have the time at the moment to take it through FAC but I might see what I can find in the books next time I'm looking for a project. LaTasha Barnes DYK
[edit]Hello Dumelow, Would I be able to have one more day to submit a different DYK for the LaTasha Barnes article? I want to use the idea that Sdkb suggested. If I can try again, where exactly do I put the new submission? Also, I want to mention that most of the problems that were flagged in the article have been addressed, including promotional language and overuse of quotations. Thanks, Wroliver (talk) 22:54, 28 October 2024 (UTC)

- Hello Dumelow,
- I'm sorry to bother you, but when I went to the link you sent for the DYK that I submitted, I didn't see a specific location to submit the revision. Do I just put it in your TALK link? I tried putting in the submission box, as I did with the original, but got an error message.

- Hello again,
- I'm working on resolving the tags within the Barnes article. Thanks for tagging the problems.
- Wroliver (talk) 20:41, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hello Dumelow,
- I think I've addressed all the problems you've tagged in my article on LaTasha Barnes, and I've added a few new things. I removed her birthdate since I couldn't find a direct citation. The way that I figured out her birthdate was that three different articles gave her age at the time they were written, so I just did the math. However, I don't know how I'd cite that, so I left it out. I changed the wording for the Siebert and Gantz items in the last section to avoid copyright violation. Please let me know if there are any further issues, and thanks for your help!
- PS Happy Halloween!
