Hanja Kochansky
Hi, you reverted my changes to Hanja Kochansky's article because I didn't cite them. The changes were accurate though - she was a personal friend and she died on 10 January 2022. I can't find an online source to verify that though. Visit www.fictionontheweb.co.uk! (talk) 09:11, 8 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Getareaction, we must not add death information unless it has been confirmed by a reliable source. Your addition was completely unsourced, which is why I reverted it. The link you provided has no information about her.
- If you are a personal friend of hers and have evidence to confirm her death, you can contact the team of volunteers at
info-en-q@wikimedia.org
, providing a link to the page and details of the problem. Please refrain from sending any private information unless they specifically request it. – DreamRimmer (talk) 09:50, 8 March 2024 (UTC)

WP:APAT - Question
Dear DreamRimmer,Hello, Can get autopatrollers right here; I do not know and I'm eligible for this rigt here, I've created 50+ article, I happy to work on here but If I created any article then I waiting for review many times, I do not why I have not autopatrollers right here and I needed to only mark as autopatrolled of our newly creation article. I ask only Question but We really do not request for this right here.I do not need to obtain this right.😊~~ αvírαm|(tαlk) 15:34, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Aviram7, the autopatrolled right is typically granted to users who consistently produce clean articles. However, upon reviewing your articles, I found many grammar mistakes. Additionally, your articles are often stubs and primarily focus on politicians, particularly MLAs, making them very easy for reviewers to assess. Nevertheless, I don't want to discourage you. If you believe there are good reasons for having this right, you can try requesting it at PERM/AP. – DreamRimmer (talk) 04:40, 10 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hmmm... I always focused to created good article on Wikipedia, I know I'm not a native speaker of English language but I try to rectifying my mistake again, I very well know Hindi but I like to work on enwiki; I don't think I have any reason to obtained autopatrollers rights because They are denied 2 times my request on there from two different reasons; I will happy if I obtained WP:APAT but we happy without them, I know my article creation techniques and my created article are not included in the list of good article. 😊~~ αvírαm|(tαlk) 05:51, 10 March 2024 (UTC)

Tech News: 2024-11
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 March. It will be on all wikis from 14 March (calendar). [1][2]
- After consulting with various communities, the line height of the text on the Minerva skin will be increased to its previous value of 1.65. Different options for typography can also be set using the options in the menu, as needed. [3]
- The active link color in Minerva will be changed to provide more consistency with our other platforms and best practices. [4]
- Structured data on Commons will no longer ask whether you want to leave the page without saving. This will prevent the “information you’ve entered may not be saved” popups from appearing when no information have been entered. It will also make file pages on Commons load faster in certain cases. However, the popups will be hidden even if information has indeed been entered. If you accidentally close the page before saving the structured data you entered, that data will be lost. [5]
Future changes
- All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on March 20. This is planned at 14:00 UTC. More information will be published in Tech News and will also be posted on individual wikis in the coming weeks. [6][7]

Unsourced articles backlog tally
No big deal but it seems as if the bot did not count sources added in March. Perhaps it was programmed to disregard edit summaries tagged for FEB24 after February 29? In my case, I would have moved into the next higher category. That was not the main purpose of the drive and since it appears no one else has mentioned this, it seems of no consequence for anyone. Thanks for putting this together. I think the participants did an admirable job. It seems to me it would be difficult to find references for many of these articles, especially the stubs on obscure subjects. Some of the ones I checked certainly fall into that category. Donner60 (talk) 22:03, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Donner60, apologies for the delay in getting back to you. Yes, the bot counted the summary points until March 1st and the reviews until March 8th. Everyone involved did an excellent job, and your contribution to this drive was truly remarkable. I want to extend my thanks once again for joining in and helping to make this drive a success. – DreamRimmer (talk) 11:34, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I
Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:
- Proposal 2, initiated by HouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
- Proposals 3 and 3b, initiated by Barkeep49 and Usedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
- Proposal 5, initiated by SilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
- Proposals 6c and 6d, initiated by BilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.
- Proposal 7, initiated by Lee Vilenski, provides for the "General discussion" section being broken up with section headings.
- Proposal 9b, initiated by Reaper Eternal, provides for the requirement that allegations of policy violation be substantiated with appropriate links to where the alleged misconduct occured.
- Proposals 12c, 21, and 21b, initiated by City of Silver, Ritchie333, and HouseBlaster, respectively, provide for reducing the discretionary zone, which currently extends from 65% to 75%. The first would reduce it 65%–70%, the second would reduce it to 50%–66%, and the third would reduce it to 60%–70%.
- Proposal 13, initiated by Novem Lingaue, provides for periodic, privately balloted admin elections.
- Proposal 14, initiated by Kusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
- Proposals 16 and 16c, initiated by Thebiguglyalien and Soni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at the administrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.
- Proposal 16e, initiated by BilledMammal, would extend the recall procedures of 16 to bureaucrats.
- Proposal 17, initiated by SchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.
- Proposal 18, initiated by theleekycauldron, provides for lowering the RfB target from 85% to 75%.
- Proposal 24, initiated by SportingFlyer, provides for a more robust alternate version of the optional candidate poll.
- Proposal 25, initiated by Femke, provides for the requirement that nominees be extended-confirmed in addition to their nominators.
- Proposal 27, initiated by WereSpielChequers, provides for the creation of a training course for admin hopefuls, as well as periodic retraining to keep admins from drifting out of sync with community norms.
- Proposal 28, initiated by HouseBlaster, tightens restrictions on multi-part questions.
To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her), via:

Question from DhaferYoussefOfficial (16:02, 14 March 2024)
Dear DreamRimmer,
I am writing to introduce myself and the purpose of the creation of my account. I hope you are doing great!
I'm Dhafer Youssef, Vocalist and Oud player who would love to update his artist profile on Wikipedia.
To start with, I'd like to update the main picture of my profil and then update the biography, enrich my discography, add the prizes I won, add the collaborations I made...
Could you please advise about the main picture update? It seems that I'm not allowed to do it.
All the best, Dhafer --DhaferYoussefOfficial (talk) 16:02, 14 March 2024 (UTC)
- Wikipedia isn't meant for posting artist profiles like other music streaming services do, and creating autobiographies on Wikipedia is discouraged. Please read WP:AUTOBIO for detailed information on why you shouldn't create one. Also, if you're notable, there's no need to worry; someone will likely create an article for you at some point. – DreamRimmer (talk) 16:20, 14 March 2024 (UTC)

Instead of directly editing the article, please make edit requests on the talk page of the article. – DreamRimmer (talk) 16:36, 14 March 2024 (UTC)
- Ah sorry I just saw your messages after directly editing it... I didn't get how it worked.
- Thanks for explaining.
- I'm not sure to understand how to declare a COI? Should I just write it in the first place on the talk page? DhaferYoussefOfficial (talk) 21:51, 14 March 2024 (UTC)

Hi - you removed my question to a responding admin after a little over 24 hours - is that the threshold for stale? These are the two articles which I created by myself without submitting it for a review. I think this is happening because the pages have not been reviewed. Just wanted to let you know that in the GA accepted version one half of an image was cut off the page [21] and the image was drastically huge. Is the image even needed when the production section is so short?
Also, the lead was full of references. Why was none of this addressed? DareshMohan (talk) 02:56, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
- @DareshMohan, Thanks for the message. It's up to you to use an image in a section; I have no hard opinion on it. The article was MOS compliant, and using citations in the lead is not prohibited. – DreamRimmer (talk) 04:24, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
- I'm surprised the article even passed GA. The refs are so badly formatted (such as missing website and date fields) and not all of them are even archived, thus there could be dead links. Ok the prose has no issues, but I can't fix the refs from mobile and IABot is down. DareshMohan, you got time? Kailash29792 (talk) 10:57, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Kailash29792, I am a little puzzled about why you are surprised the article passed GA. The reference format isn't really all that bad, and folks usually follow their preferred format. Most of the sources, I personally checked and found them to be good. You don't have to archive all the references; only the dead URLs need to be. If there happen to be any at the moment, I'd really appreciate your help with that. Also, each GA reviewer evaluates things based on their own judgment. So, if you've got any suggestions or advice for me, I'd be more than happy to hear it! – DreamRimmer (talk) 11:37, 25 March 2024 (UTC)

Question from MaximilienLuc (02:46, 28 March 2024)
Hi DreamRimmer and thank you for being my mentor. I want to write about a topic but found that it was in draft space, and the previous editor seems to stop editing for more than a month. Should I create my new version and submit via AFC or edti on the old draft? Looking forward to your reply. --MaximilienLuc (talk) 02:46, 28 March 2024 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Hey. Yes, you can edit that draft itself and submit it for review. Just drop a message on the previous editor's talk page, just in case. If you make another submission, it will get declined per duplicate AfC submission rationale. Make sure you edit and submit it per all the guidelines of AfC. Also, if there was any old decline comments, address them too. Good luck and happy editing. The Herald (Benison) (talk) 03:09, 28 March 2024 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024
Hello DreamRimmer,
Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.
Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.
Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.
It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!
2023 Awards
Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!
WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.
Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.
Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.
Reminders:
- You can access live chat with patrollers on the New Pages Patrol Discord.
- Consider adding the project discussion page to your watchlist.

Request for expansion help and review of draft sources
Greetings @DreamRimmer
Hi, I am User:Bookku, On Wikipedia I engage in, finding information and knowledge gap areas in Wikipedia and promoting expansion of related drafts and articles. Came across your user profile (from WT:ICTF ).
Requesting your visit to My Choice (2015 film) (still a draft in my userspace). As per my initial visit to visit WP:ICTF, WP:ICTFFAQ, WP:ICTFSOURCES I did not find any contentious news site issues but just came across a discussion initiated by you at WT:ICTF
It was a feminist short film which was covered by media due to some controversial feminist aspects so it's unlikely to be case of paid news. But still I request your visit to the draft My Choice (2015 film) and help evaluate sources and let me know if you think any of collated news pieces have any thing doubtful.
Please note usually I do not edit film related articles and keeping up to date on related discussions would remain difficult for me. So detail proactive contribution from users active in film topic area would be of help.
Also help expand the topic areas if you find topic interesting. Wish you very happy Wikipedia editing.
Thanks and warm regards
Bookku (talk) 11:42, 5 April 2024 (UTC)

Hindustan Times 1
I thought I write down difficulty on hand vis a vis WT:ICTF#Hindustan Times otherwise I will forget later. You may take call on the same as and when you get time.
For the draft My Choice (2015 film) Hindustan Times article Sorry Deepika Padukone, these are not the choices women need by ByJyoti Sharma Bawa, New Delhi is very very highly critical of the short film. I doubt any one will pay for criticism having such level of ideological opposition. As such this article does not have any disclaimer and has an author as you said. But a general advert iphone 15 is appearing before me - but I do not see any prima facie relation of I phone brand with the short film. So I just wish to confirm this want to confirm this won't be considered publishing paid brand post.
You can look into it as and when you get time and give your feed back.
Bookku (talk) 10:36, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
Hindustan Times 2
Short film production related couple of detail seem clearer in following news piece like Deepika Padukone's role in short film is limited to "She bookends the film and is also giving the voice over". Which can be confirmed directly with Short film You tube link. Other couple of news articles in other sources are as if she is doing a lead role in short film but that is not so. Hence I would prefer to use this news piece if I get your concurrence. Shah, Jigar (14 December 2014). "After hits like Cocktail and Finding Fanny, Deepika-Homi join hands for a cause". Request
Hi DreamRimmer! Would you be able to help a mentee with a question they asked in Hindi at my talk page? I don't speak Hindi, and I would rather not rely on Google Translate to have a conversation. I imagine the best thing to do would be to direct them to hiwiki? (I got your name from WP:EMB.) Thanks, HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 17:33, 7 April 2024 (UTC)

Re: My Usurpation Request
Hello @DreamRimmer (sorry for taking this to your user page), but when I am well established enough, do I request another usurpation?
P.S. referencing this. LunaticBFF58 (talk) 05:16, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
- @LunaticBFF58, your request was recently declined, so I don't think submitting a new one would be helpful. I've already explained the next steps, but if you feel you're eligible, please reach out to other renamers who handle requests on that page. – DreamRimmer (talk) 05:23, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
- Do I just submit another one (in a year or so) or do I reach out (on their talk page) to other renamers that have dealt with other usurpation requests? LunaticBFF58 (talk) 05:27, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
- Oh, I misunderstood your initial message. Yes, you can submit another usurpation request after a few months once your account is well-established (eg. 2-3 months of editing and 400+ edits). – DreamRimmer (talk) 05:35, 6 April 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Web browsers can use tools called extensions. There is now a Chrome extension called Citation Needed which you can use to see if an online statement is supported by a Wikipedia article. This is a small experiment to see if Wikipedia can be used this way. Because it is a small experiment, it can only be used in Chrome in English.
- A new Edit Recovery feature has been added to all wikis, available as a user preference. Once you enable it, your in-progress edits will be stored in your web browser, and if you accidentally close an editing window or your browser or computer crashes, you will be prompted to recover the unpublished text. Please leave any feedback on the project talk page. This was the #8 wish in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey.
- Initial results of Edit check experiments have been published. Edit Check is now deployed as a default feature at the wikis that tested it. Let us know if you want your wiki to be part of the next deployment of Edit check. [25][26]
- Readers using the Minerva skin on mobile will notice there has been an improvement in the line height across all typography settings. [27]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 April. It will be on all wikis from 11 April (calendar). [28][29]
- New accounts and logged-out users will get the visual editor as their default editor on mobile. This deployment is made at all wikis except for the English Wikipedia. [30]

I am new to this Online encyclopedia, (not new to html), So do you know how to create a page? I am currently trying to make a article on the Kuku malware, as i was affected by it, and there is no article on it already. ColourMaster16 (talk) 23:26, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
- @ColourMaster16, welcome to Wikipedia! Please take a moment to read Help:Your first article for guidance on creating an article. Its simple wording would be very helpful to you. – DreamRimmer (talk) 10:46, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
CHU/S query
Hey, I posted a query at this request, since the requestor's rename reason covers the concern I had, do you think in a day or so, go head and process the request anyway? - FlightTime (open channel) 19:54, 10 April 2024 (UTC)
- @FlightTime, you can proceed with the rename as there is no reason for us to decline it. Also, one suggestion for you: If the requested username is their real name, there's no need to seek their confirmation. Just go ahead and process the request. The instructions at the top of the request page and edit notice clearly warn them with the following note when they request a rename: Please understand the implications of using your real name before requesting a name change to it. – DreamRimmer (talk) 04:51, 11 April 2024 (UTC)

Problems
- Between 2 April and 8 April, on wikis using Flagged Revisions, the "Reverted" tag was not applied to undone edits. In addition, page moves, protections and imports were not autoreviewed. This problem is now fixed. [32][33]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 April. It will be on all wikis from 18 April (calendar). [34][35]
- Default category sort keys will now affect categories added by templates placed in footnotes. Previously footnotes used the page title as the default sort key even if a different default sort key was specified (category-specific sort keys already worked). [36]
- A new variable
page_last_edit_age
will be added to abuse filters. It tells how many seconds ago the last edit to a page was made. [37]
Future changes
- Volunteer developers are kindly asked to update the code of their tools and features to handle temporary accounts. Learn more.
- Four database fields will be removed from database replicas (including Quarry). This affects only the
abuse_filter
andabuse_filter_history
tables. Some queries might need to be updated. [38]

Recent changes
- The appearance of talk pages changed for the following wikis: Azerbaijani Wikipedia, Bengali Wikipedia, German Wikipedia, Persian Wikipedia, Hebrew Wikipedia, Hindi Wikipedia, Indonesian Wikipedia, Korean Wikipedia, Dutch Wikipedia, Portuguese Wikipedia, Romanian Wikipedia, Thai Wikipedia, Turkish Wikipedia, Ukrainian Wikipedia, Vietnamese Wikipedia. These wikis participated to a test, where 50% of users got the new design, for one year. As this test gave positive results, the new design is deployed on these wikis as the default design. It is possible to opt-out these changes in user preferences ("Show discussion activity"). The deployment will happen at all wikis in the coming weeks. [43]
- Seven new wikis have been created:
- You can now watch message groups/projects on Translatewiki.net. Initially, this feature will notify you of added or deleted messages in these groups. [51]
- Dark mode is now available on all wikis, on mobile web for logged-in users who opt into the advanced mode. This is the early release of the feature. Technical editors are invited to check for accessibility issues on wikis. See more detailed guidelines.
Problems
- Kartographer maps can use an alternative visual style without labels, by using
mapstyle="osm"
. This wasn't working in previews, creating the wrong impression that it wasn't supported. This has now been fixed. [52]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 30 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 May. It will be on all wikis from 2 May (calendar). [53][54]

Administrators' newsletter – May 2024
News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2024).
- Phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship review has concluded. Several proposals have passed outright and will proceed to implementation, including creating a discussion-only period (3b) and administrator elections (13) on a trial basis. Other successful proposals, such as creating a reminder of civility norms (2), will undergo further refinement in Phase II. Proposals passed on a trial basis will be discussed in Phase II, after their trials conclude. Further details on specific proposals can be found in the full report.
- Partial action blocks are now in effect on the English Wikipedia. This means that administrators have the ability to restrict users from certain actions, including uploading files, moving pages and files, creating new pages, and sending thanks. T280531
- The arbitration case Conflict of interest management has been closed.
- This may be a good time to reach out to potential nominees to ask if they would consider an RfA.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in May 2024 to reduce the number of unreviewed articles in the new pages feed. Currently, there is a backlog of over 15,000 articles awaiting review. Sign up here to participate!
- Voting for the Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) election is open until 9 May 2024. Read the voting page on Meta-Wiki and cast your vote here!

Hey DreamRimmer, I feel like the blurb for RFA2024 is way too long. I don't really see a need to mention every single proposal that passed but at the same time I'm not sure how to phrase it in a better way. Would you mind looking into it. Thanks -- EN-Jungwon 14:20, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
- @EN-Jungwon, I can tweak the wording, but I believe the current content would be beneficial. If you disagree, I'm happy to make adjustments. – DreamRimmer (talk) 14:47, 1 May 2024 (UTC)

- @EN-Jungwon Should we use "Phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship review has concluded. Several proposals have passed outright and will proceed to implementation, including discussion-only periods and administrator elections on a trial basis. Other successful proposals, such as creating tenure requirements, will undergo further refinement in Phase II. Those passed on a trial basis will be discussed in Phase II after their trials conclude. Further details on specific proposals can be found in the full report."? – DreamRimmer (talk) 18:34, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
- I guess it wouldn't be a problem even if the wording is long. It just felt weird because I've not seen such long blurbs in ANEWS before. You can go ahead and send it out. I still don't have a laptop so I don't want to mess something up while sending the MMS on my phone. Happy editing! -- EN-Jungwon 18:25, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
- @EN-Jungwon, I'll distribute it in a few minutes. Please let me know if you'd like to handle it. – DreamRimmer (talk) 17:26, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
RFA2024 update: phase I concluded, phase II begins
Hi there! Phase I of the Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review has concluded, with several impactful changes gaining community consensus and proceeding to various stages of implementation. Some proposals will be implemented in full outright; others will be discussed at phase II before being implemented; and still others will proceed on a trial basis before being brought to phase II. The following proposals have gained consensus:
- Proposals 2 and 9b (phase II discussion): Add a reminder of civility norms at RfA and Require links for claims of specific policy violations
- Proposal 3b (in trial): Make the first two days discussion-only
- Proposal 13 (in trial): Admin elections
- Proposal 14 (implemented): Suffrage requirements
- Proposals 16 and 16c (phase II discussion): Allow the community to initiate recall RfAs and Community recall process based on dewiki
- Proposal 17 (phase II discussion): Have named Admins/crats to monitor infractions
- Proposal 24 (phase II discussion): Provide better mentoring for becoming an admin and the RfA process
- Proposal 25 (implemented): Require nominees to be extended confirmed
See the project page for a full list of proposals and their outcomes. A huge thank-you to everyone who has participated so far :) looking forward to seeing lots of hard work become a reality in phase II. theleekycauldron (talk), via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:08, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
Rename policy question
Hello. I don't see anything about this on the rename request page, (or the username policy page,) so I figured I'd ask you. I'm looking to rename to a username, but this username is already registered in the Spanish Wikipedia, and the Spanish Wiktionary. I tried going through Special:GlobalRenameRequest to rename, but it said it was already taken. I'm not asking you to rename me, I'm just asking, where should I put my rename request? The username is Nyx if you need it. Thanks in advance. BerryForPerpetuity (talk) 12:35, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
- @BerryForPerpetuity, thanks for reaching out. There are two types of rename processes: one is a simple rename, where the target account is not already registered, and the second is usurpation, where you can request to usurp a registered usernamet if it is inactive and has no edits, although a few edits are okay. Special:GlobalRenameRequest is only for requesting simple renames. If the target account is registered and you want to usurp that username, then you can submit a usurpation request on English Wikipedia's usurpation venue. (Target account must have English Wikipedia as its home wiki) If it is registered on any other project, you can submit a usurpation request on Meta. Please note that 'Nyx' has significant edits on the Spanish Wikipedia, so it is not eligible for usurpation. I hope this helps. – DreamRimmer (talk) 16:27, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
- Okay. Thank you for the assistance :) BerryForPerpetuity (talk) 16:30, 6 May 2024 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- The appearance of talk pages changed for all wikis, except for Commons, Wikidata and most Wikipedias (a few have already received this design change). You can read the detail of the changes on Diff. It is possible to opt-out these changes in user preferences ("Show discussion activity"). The deployment will happen at remaining wikis in the coming weeks. [55][56]
- Interface admins now have greater control over the styling of article components on mobile with the introduction of the
SiteAdminHelper
. More information on how styles can be disabled can be found at the extension's page. [57] - Wikimedia Enterprise has added article body sections in JSON format and a curated short description field to the existing parsed Infobox. This expansion to the API is also available via Wikimedia Cloud Services. [58]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 May. It will be on all wikis from 9 May (calendar). [59][60]
- When you look at the Special:Log page, the first view is labelled "All public logs", but it only shows some logs. This label will now say "Main public logs". [61]
Future changes
- A new service will be built to replace Extension:Graph. Details can be found in the latest update regarding this extension.
- Starting May 21, English Wikipedia and German Wikipedia will get the possibility to activate "Add a link". This is part of the progressive deployment of this tool to all Wikipedias. These communities can activate and configure the feature locally. [62]

Hello, DreamRimmer,
You shouldn't have tagged this page for speedy deletion after it was moved and I shouldn't have deleted it as it has resulted in dozens of broken redirects. See Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion#Deleted redirects to TM103: Hustlerz Ambition for some of the consequences, just a few of them that editors have asked to be restored. Please never tag a page for deletion immediately after an article page move as it takes a few hours for Wikipedia's bots to change redirects to point to the new article title. I think we both made a mistake here, you for tagging the old page for deletion and me for not asking more question before deleting it. Let's not do this again. Liz Read! Talk! 02:57, 8 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Liz, yes, you are right. Please don't blame yourself; this was solely my mistake. I knew there were some redirects that needed to be retargeted to the new title, but I was on mobile at the time, so I planned to fix them later on the computer. However, in the meantime, they got deleted. But don't worry, I'll be more careful next time, and I apologies for any wasted time and resources here. – DreamRimmer (talk) 03:10, 8 May 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- On Wikisource there is a special page listing pages of works without corresponding scan images. Now you can use the new magic word
__EXPECTWITHOUTSCANS__
to exclude certain pages (list of editions or translations of works) from that list. [63] - If you use the user-preference "Show preview without reloading the page", then the template-page feature "Preview page with this template (what's this?)" will now also work without reloading the page. [64]
- Kartographer maps can now specify an alternative text via the
alt=
attribute. This is identical in usage to thealt=
attribute in the image and gallery syntax. An exception for this feature is wikis like Wikivoyage where the miniature maps are interactive. [65] - The old Guided Tour for the "New Filters for Edit Review" feature has been removed. It was created in 2017 to show people with older accounts how the interface had changed, and has now been seen by most of the intended people. [66]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 May. It will be on all wikis from 16 May (calendar). [67][68]
- The Special:Search results page will now use CSS flex attributes, for better accessibility, instead of a table. If you have a gadget or script that adjusts search results, you should update your script to the new HTML structure. [69]
Future changes
- In the Vector 2022 skin, main pages will be displayed at full width (like special pages). The goal is to keep the number of characters per line large enough. This is related to the coming changes to typography in Vector 2022. Learn more. [70]
- Two columns of the
pagelinks
database table (pl_namespace
andpl_title
) are being dropped soon. Users must use two columns of the newlinktarget
table instead (lt_namespace
andlt_title
). In your existing SQL queries:- Replace

Question from Pogh123 (13:17, 12 May 2024)
Hello DreamWimmer , I can tell that you are a very experienced Wikipedia editor+mentor and that you are pleased to guide me.Is there a strategy you use?If so,what is it?
Thanks for your help,
From Pogh123 --Pogh123 (talk) 13:17, 12 May 2024 (UTC)

COI warning and UAA listing
Please don't do both with little time in between. From the UAA instructions: Discuss less-serious violations with the user on their talk page so that they can rename or abandon their account in good faith. Templates such as {{Uw-username}} or {{Uw-coi-username}} may be used. If, after discussion with a user, the problem still seems unresolved, a username request for comment may be in order.
(bold italics mine.) - UtherSRG (talk) 13:33, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
- @UtherSRG, COI warning was sent when I reverted their edit and I reported it because it was an obvious violation of the username policy. I understand that we should only do one thing at a time—either report it or discuss it with the user. However, the COI warning message doesn't provide instructions about usernames. Also, I have seen admins processing these types of reports. – DreamRimmer (talk) 13:58, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
- I suggest working to improve the information provided to the user on the COI warning (or providing the additional information yourself), then, so that you don't feel the need to immediately report to UAA. - UtherSRG (talk) 14:06, 20 May 2024 (UTC)

- New changes have been made to the UploadWizard in Wikimedia Commons: the overall layout has been improved, by following new styling and spacing for the form and its fields; the headers and helper text for each of the fields was changed; the Caption field is now a required field, and there is an option for users to copy their caption into the media description. Help
Hi! Hope you are doing well. Today morning I moved the article I created - Boomerang (2024 Bengali film) from draftspace to mainspace. But after that a warning was displayed on top of the article which I roughly remember. It said something like "The draft has exceeded 20,157 bytes. If you don't want to lose the edit history of the draft, then merge the edit history of the draft with the main article. An administrator should do this job. If you are an non-administrator, then put this {{ }} (I don't remember what was there) on top of the page."
But I thought of closing the window and then put the {{ }} on top of the page. But later when I again opened the article, there was no warning. It had disappeared.
So, can you please see the matter and take the necessary steps so that the article and the history remains.
Thanks

Today's TFA, Felix M. Warburg House, was written by Vami_IV and Epicgenius, introduced: "This article is about another of the great houses that once lined Fifth Avenue in New York. Specifically, this is the mansion of Felix M. Warburg, a Jewish financier who ignored fears of anti-Semitic reprisal to his decided to build himself a big Gothic manor in the middle of New York City. Although the Warburgs no longer remain, their legacy does: the museum is now the home of the Jewish Museum (Manhattan) and the building largely survives as they left it. It's a beautiful building and I hope you will all enjoy it."! - in memory -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:08, 10 May 2024 (UTC)

For your tireless editing contributions throughout the years, any barnstar is long overdue. Hello, how do I cite sources, can I do it with Visual Editing? --ManCityFanIndian (talk) 09:44, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hello @ManCityFanIndian, welcome to Wikipedia. Yes, you can cite sources while using the Visual Editor. To do this, click on the 'Cite' button in the Visual Editor toolbar. You can choose 'Auto' to paste a URL or other identifying information, and the tool will automatically fill in the citation details. Alternatively, select 'Manual' to choose a citation template like 'Book' or 'Website' and fill in the required fields yourself. For sources you've already cited in the article, use the 'Re-use' option to select from your existing citations. You can find a more detailed guide at WP:REFVISUAL. I hope this helps. – DreamRimmer (talk) 07:43, 7 June 2024 (UTC)

- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 June. It will be on all wikis from 13 June (calendar). [89][90]
- The new version of MediaWiki includes another change to the HTML markup used for citations: Parsoid will now generate a
<span class="mw-cite-backlink">
wrapper for both named and unnamed references for better compatibility with the legacy parser. Interface administrators should verify that gadgets that interact with citations are compatible with the new markup. More details are available. [91] - On multilingual wikis that use the
<translate>
system, there is a feature that shows potentially-outdated translations with a pink background until they are updated or confirmed. From this week, confirming translations will be logged, and there is a new user-right that can be required for confirming translations if the community requests it. [92]

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- People who attempt to add an external link in the visual editor will now receive immediate feedback if they attempt to link to a domain that a project has decided to block. Please see Edit check for more details. [93]
- The new Community Configuration extension is available on Test Wikipedia. This extension allows communities to customize specific features to meet their local needs. Currently only Growth features are configurable, but the extension will support other Community Configuration use cases in the future. [94][95]
- The dark mode beta feature is now available on category and help pages, as well as more special pages. There may be contrast issues. Please report bugs on the project talk page. [96]
Problems
- Cloud Services tools were not available for 25 minutes last week. This was caused by a faulty hardware cable in the data center. [97]
- Last week, styling updates were made to the Vector 2022 skin. This caused unforeseen issues with templates, hatnotes, and images. Changes to templates and hatnotes were reverted. Most issues with images were fixed. If you still see any, report them here. [98]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 18 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 19 June. It will be on all wikis from 20 June (calendar). [99][100]
- Starting June 18, the Reference Edit Check will be deployed to a new set of Wikipedias. This feature is intended to help newcomers and to assist edit-patrollers by inviting people who are adding new content to a Wikipedia article to add a citation when they do not do so themselves. During a test at 11 wikis, the number of citations added more than doubled when Reference Check was shown to people. Reference Check is community configurable. [101]
- Mailing lists will be unavailable for roughly two hours on Tuesday 10:00–12:00 UTC. This is to enable migration to a new server and upgrade its software. [102]

Thank you for improving article quality in June! - Today we have a centenarian story (documentation about it by Percy Adlon) and an article that had two sentences yesterday and was up for deletion, and needs a few more citations. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:16, 20 June 2024 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Editors will notice that there have been some changes to the background color of text in the diff view, and the color of the byte-change numbers, last week. These changes are intended to make text more readable in both light mode and dark mode, and are part of a larger effort to increase accessibility. You can share your comments or questions on the project talkpage. [103]
- The text colors that are used for visited-links, hovered-links, and active-links, were also slightly changed last week to improve their accessibility in both light mode and dark mode. [104]
Problems
- You can copy permanent links to talk page comments by clicking on a comment's timestamp. This feature did not always work when the topic title was very long and the link was used as a wikitext link. This has been fixed. Thanks to Lofhi for submitting the bug. [105]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 25 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 26 June. It will be on all wikis from 27 June (calendar). [106][107]
- Starting 26 June, all talk pages messages' timestamps will become a link at English Wikipedia, making this feature available for you to use at all wikis. This link is a permanent link to the comment. It allows users to find the comment they were linked to, even if this comment has since been moved elsewhere. You can read more about this feature on Diff or on Mediawiki.org. [108]

Spare some time?
Hi, there is a move discussion at Talk:Public Sector Undertakings in India which is receiving less participation and is likely to be closed without a clear consensus. I would greatly appreciate if you could spare some time and leave your valuable opinion. Thank you. Have a great day. 2409:4073:104:92C2:9939:2182:D47D:646F (talk) 16:44, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
- I am not familiar with this subject, so I don't have any idea. I think more familiar users should share their opinions. – DreamRimmer (talk) 17:09, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
Tech News: 2024-27
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Over the next three weeks, dark mode will become available for all users, both logged-in and logged-out, starting with the mobile web version. This fulfils one of the top-requested community wishes, and improves low-contrast reading and usage in low-light settings. As part of these changes, dark mode will also work on User-pages and Portals. There is more information in the latest Web team update. [109]
- Logged-in users can now set global preferences for the text-size and dark-mode, thanks to a combined effort across Foundation teams. This allows Wikimedians using multiple wikis to set up a consistent reading experience easily, for example by switching between light and dark mode only once for all wikis. [110]
- If you use a very old web browser some features might not work on the Wikimedia wikis. This affects Internet Explorer 11 and versions of Chrome, Firefox and Safari older than 2016. This change makes it possible to use new CSS features and to send less code to all readers. [111][112]
- Wikipedia Admins can customize local wiki configuration options easily using Community Configuration. Community Configuration was created to allow communities to customize how some features work, because each language wiki has unique needs. At the moment, admins can configure Growth features on their home wikis, in order to better recruit and retain new editors. More options will be provided in the coming months. [113]
- Editors interested in language issues that are related to Unicode standards, can now discuss those topics at a new conversation space in MediaWiki.org. The Wikimedia Foundation is now a member of the Unicode Consortium, and the coordination group can collaboratively review the issues discussed and, where appropriate, bring them to the attention of the Unicode Consortium.
- One new wiki has been created: a Wikipedia in Mandailing (
w:btm:
) [114]
Problems
- Editors can once again click on links within the visual editor's citation-preview, thanks to a bug fix by the Editing Team. [115]
Future changes
- Please help us to improve Tech News by taking this short survey. The goal is to better meet the needs of the various types of people who read Tech News. The survey will be open for 2 weeks. The survey is covered by this privacy statement. Some translations are available.
