Romanization of Gao Qifeng

Hello @Crisco 1492–thank you so much for creating Gao Qifeng and bringing it to DYK. I am wondering if you would like to include some alternative romanizations of his name, Ko Kei-Fung (in Cantonese) and Kao Ch'i-Feng (in Mandarin)? The subject lived before the PRC and his contemporaries would not refer to him using the Pinyin system.

The romanization "Ko Kei-Fung" can be seen here on a 1940 magazine cover. "Kao Ch'i-Feng" can be seen here on An Index to Reproductions of Paintings by Twentieth-Century Chinese Artists (1998), listed under "Kao Weng", his birth name. Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 21:11, 29 October 2024 (UTC)

Re: Ye Gongchuo

Wow, incredible job with this article. I think I'm slightly jealous of your skills. Anyway, is there a reason you only make passing mention of his collaboration with Tagore? Is it hard to find more info? I only ask as that would make a great hook if we knew some other details. Viriditas (talk) 21:38, 2 November 2024 (UTC)

Hey, do you do halftone restoration at all? Your lead slot image for Ye Gongchuo could be greatly improved using a separate image that uses a blur and sharpen filter. Apparently, the problem arose during the initial scan, where you can limit the dots from the halftone. Viriditas (talk) 22:14, 3 November 2024 (UTC)

Hello. As the nominator I have withdrawn my nomination of the aforementioned AFD which you have relisted. Unlike the other tennis articles I've listed for AFD this one has at least been partially improved and I've lost the will to bother trying to tidy up the Wikipedia tennis pages which are filled with nonsense. Sorry to rant. No criticism of you is meant. Best wishes . Shrug02 (talk) 01:26, 9 November 2024 (UTC)

  • Alright, Shrug02, no worries. I've closed the nomination as withdrawn. Thank you for keeping an eye out for potentially non-notable subjects. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 01:29, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
Thank you. I won't be keeping an eye out anymore. Another closer has just relisted an AFD which has had no additions made to it in 7 days, has no references and has 4 people to 1 saying delete. I'm totally disheartened with the entire process and Wikipedia in general. It seems like a high school clique and I'm far too old for it. Again thanks and all the best. Shrug02 (talk) 01:33, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
No worries... I know that feeling. One reason why I've been focusing on content creation since coming out of retirement... a lot simpler to just be there with your sources. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 01:35, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
I have done lots of content creation but stopped making new pages when ones with dozens of sources were successfully AFD nominated because a group of people piled on with delete votes. I then switched to improving existing articles. I found a few that were impossible to improve so AFD nominated them, just to find that the powers that be keep them because I haven't got a bunch of people to pile on and those who agree these articles should be deleted are overruled by the admins. Anyway sorry to vent to a stranger. Think I'm going to find a new hobby. Shrug02 (talk) 01:41, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
Ooof. Best of luck! — Chris Woodrich (talk) 01:42, 9 November 2024 (UTC)

Chen Dingshan–Thank you!

Hello @Crisco 1492,

Thank you for writing the amazing article about the amazing Chen Dingshan. I took liberty to put a bit more information, including his education, wives(?!), kid, travel, jail(?!), and re-organized the narrative of his early life into a chronological manner. I also hold the opinion that 飯店 would mean "restaurant", not "hotel", in 1930s China, but I could be wrong and I am more than happy to discuss with you about that. Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 20:42, 10 November 2024 (UTC)

And in case you want to reference your previous text, I've made a copy of the article before my edits at User:TheLonelyPather/sandbox2. Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 20:58, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
  • That's excellent, TheLonelyPather! I'll make sure to add you as co-author on the DYK nom... I didn't think to look for articles on his sister, and I'm always happy to have more biographical data. As for the translation, I defer to you entirely, as I work primarily through Google when writing articles on Chinese subjects, and between sources using current language and Google not providing historical context, it's easy to miss things like that where the meaning has shifted. 03:26, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
  • Oh, you reviewed. That could get awkward if I added you. Nix that. But either way, thank you! — Chris Woodrich (talk) 03:27, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
You're most welcome. Now that we've got the older brother and the sister of the family, we might think about the younger brother Chen Cidie, the father Chen Diexian, and the mother Zhu Su ... I will be available by Christmas time. Looking forward to potential future collaborations with you! Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 03:56, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
I haven't looked into the others in the family much, but just based on the Lear source, there is certainly enough for Chen Diexian! Some of the DYK hooks would be interesting... deliberately setting fire to bales of hay to prove that his new fire extinguisher worked, for example.  — Chris Woodrich (talk) 03:57, 11 November 2024 (UTC)

Jaws

Jaws is an American thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the 1974 novel by Peter Benchley. Released on June 20, 1975, it stars Roy Scheider as police chief Martin Brody, who, with the help of a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a professional shark hunter (Robert Shaw), hunts a man-eating great white shark that attacks beachgoers at a summer resort town. Regarded as a watershed moment in motion picture history, Jaws was the prototypical summer blockbuster and won several awards for its music and editing. It was the highest-grossing film of all time until the release of Star Wars two years later; both films were pivotal in establishing the modern Hollywood business model, which pursues high box-office returns from action and adventure films with simple high-concept premises, released during the summer in thousands of theaters and advertised heavily.

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article The Great Mecca Feast you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Good article nominee

Hello, I recently nominated the article Le langaige du Bresil as a good article under the Language and literature subtopic, though I believe it could also fit under World history. Since you have not "contributed significantly" to the article, you might be able to review it according to the criteria. I would like to know if, having the necessary skills for this, you would be willing to do so. Thank you, RodRabelo7 (talk) 12:37, 27 November 2024 (UTC)

No-target errors on the front page

Hi, I just fixed a no-target error in Mały Brzostek, which is soon to be on the front page as part of DYK. The error had been present since the article was moved to mainspace in October. Are articles not checked for such reference errors before being allowed onto the main page, and if not, where would I go to suggest that they are? Thanks, DuncanHill (talk) 22:08, 27 November 2024 (UTC)

  • Hi DuncanHill, and good catch. Those errors are not covered under the WP:DYKCRIT, though it would be good to catch them. If you want to go to suggest that they be added to the criteria, WT:DYK is the best spot. That being said, the entry bar for DYK is fairly low compared to the GA and FA processes, so I don't expect there to be much positive response.  — Chris Woodrich (talk) 01:03, 28 November 2024 (UTC)

Question

Hi Chris, I uploaded This image and for some reason the color rendering at either full-screen or full-size is fine, as should be. However at thumbnail sizes on Commons (created by Commons) and on en-Wiki, the colors are more saturated, more blue-ish. For example compare this 1024x710 thumbnail with this full-screen version. Is that just me and my display, or have you seen this type of thing before? Bammesk (talk) 19:28, 7 December 2024 (UTC)

Yes, I looked into it after your first reply. I was about to do somewhat equivalent of what you did in GIMP. I use GIMP and it is not a user friendly software when it comes to color space and meta data. I was about to delete the XMP data, which would remove the color profile bit, which would have made the file de facto sRGB. And then I would have done an upload. I keep that in mind next time. You beat me to it, your fix worked, so no need to do anything on my end. Thank you. Bammesk (talk) 20:21, 7 December 2024 (UTC)

Hello, Crisco 1492,

I was looking at some AFDs that were filed and closed tonight (like Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Xana (drag queen)) and saw your comments. I've closed hundreds, maybe thousands, of AFDs and I'm not familiar with a "soft close". Can you explain it to me or point to it on a policy page? Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 05:37, 8 December 2024 (UTC)

  • Hi Liz, it was intended as an allusion to WP:NOQUORUM (or "soft delete") and meant to indicate that, should there be any disagreement with the close, I would not object to anyone reverting it. This was meant to facilitate continued discussion should it be deemed necessary. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 13:19, 8 December 2024 (UTC)

Hi, sorry but would it be possible to change the wording of the hook from that the ruler of Mwene Muji's grand claims of once having imperial status were dismissed by Belgian colonial authorities? to that the grand claims from the ruler of Mwene Muji of once having imperial status were dismissed by Belgian colonial authorities? as it’s much more natural Kowal2701 (talk) 18:03, 24 December 2024 (UTC)

I agree with the header! - Listen today to Beethoven's 3rd cello sonata, on his birthday - it was a hook in the 2020 DYK set when his 250th birthday was remembered. I picked a recording with Antônio Meneses, because he was on my sad list this year, and I was in Brazil (see places), and I love his playing. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:52, 16 December 2024 (UTC)

Happy new year!

For your (very brief) perusal: Liang Lingxian. The Liang family is always a great subject to study... Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 16:41, 4 January 2025 (UTC)

  • That's impressive, TheLonelyPather. I've been on a reprieve for a bit, but I was working on a draft about Li Minghui (the daughter of Li Jinhui). It's missing almost seventy years of her life, so I'm hoping that the resource exchange can get me a copy of her biography in the Shanghai Dictionary... oddly enough, the Chinese-language sources are almost entirely Sohu and other user-generated content.  — Chris Woodrich (talk) 17:43, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
@Crisco 1492 One should not expect great standards for Chinese-language sources. Chinese Wikipedia-equivalents are more or less of a wild west. Also be aware that the Shanghai Dictionary, being compiled by official committees, would only present people's biographies in politically suitable ways. I wish you luck! Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 01:42, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
Yep, I expected as much. Unfortunately, English-language sources seem to have stopped looking into her past 1931, and Baidu claims that she was acting until 1938. State-sponsored sources are better than none at all, especially given that Li doesn't appear to have involved herself in politics all that much.  — Chris Woodrich (talk) 02:17, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
