Notability affecting shared name?

Can a change in notability of one person affect the notability of another person with a similar name. I refer in particular to Jerry Sandusky, the former Penn State coach accused of sexual abuse charges, and Gerry Sandusky, play-by-play broadcaster of the Baltimore Ravens on WBAL. As you see by the redlink, Gerry does not have a page yet. He might be considered notable already given his broadcasting job; however, does Jerry's increased prominence affect Gerry's? Even if just to help prevent people from confusing the two? (The two are not related, as Gerry has mentioned in several interviews. However, they both have relatives — also with similar names — with a coincidental connection, and both have articles already: John Sandusky, father of Gerry, played for the Cleveland Browns, and Jon Sandusky [no h], son of Jerry, is an executive with the Browns.) And how should the differentiation be made, with a hatnote on each of their pages, plus an additional line on the general Sandusky page? And do John and Jon need hatnotes?(I ask this because earlier today on ESPN Radio, they updated a story mentioning Jerry Sandusky, then played highlights of the Ravens' game by Gerry Sandusky, and the host had to give an explanation.)Michael J 00:44, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Gerry's notability hasn't changed. If he was notable, he still is, if he wasn't, he still isn't. Still, it can't hurt to make a brief mention in Jerry's article to avoid confusion. - 194.60.106.17 (talk) 08:08, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, that makes sense. I am going to consider Gerry Sandusky notable, inasmuch as others doing his same job (play-by-play for NFL teams) have articles, such as Bob Wischusen of the Jets and Merrill Reese of the Eagles. Wiki Says, "He was born in Kerala, India as the eldest son of Ayyappan, an Excise department employee and Ponnamma, a school teacher. Later, he relocated to Mala and started using the place name along with his name."

Still cannot find my submission

I still cannot find my submission on Lincoln University School of Law.

Yes, I have perused the Lincoln University of Missouri article and the University's website and am aware that they do not cover the law school. The law school ceased to exist in 1955 and you probably are correct that the Brown Supreme Court decision had a lot to do with that. The historical noteworthiness of the law school is that it was created by the Missouri General Assembly in 1938 as a law school for African-Americans pursuant to the then-controlling legal doctrine of "separate but equal" as articulated in Plessy v. Ferguson and it was the only law school in U.S. history to be established as a result of, or in response to, a lawsuit, e.g., Gaines v. Canada. Thus, the law school has noteworthiness aside from the fact that it was established as a part of Lincoln University of Missouri; I would submit that this instance is one of "the tail [the law school] wagging the dog [the university]".

David Biddulph, thank you for your intuitiveness. That earlier post was mine. The law school article's references have not been inlined, yet, and I anticipate that this error will cause it to be flagged for more work. I've only written two articles, so I'm "feeling my way" through the mine field . . .

I'm sorry, but I can't find anything interesting among your contributions other than the page at User:Slidhome/H.T. Lockard. Note that pages have history; you might be thinking of an older version of this article. If the article was written while you were logged out, it may be difficult to find. It might be somewhere inside the article incubator or articles for creation, or might be a "live" article (part of the encyclopedia proper). If it is live, I'd recommend looking at Lincoln University as a starting point. If it's in the incubator or AFC, it may be harder to track down; the special page Special:PrefixIndex may be useful for finding pages inside of those systems. --NYKevin @393, i.e. 08:25, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

When I used the User page (which was set up for me by another editor) and re-submitted the article entitled H.T. Lockard, I was able to and could track it's progress or lack thereof after submission. It remained on the User page. I wrote another article on the wizard and several other avenues for submission [there were no buttons for me to click to track it] and saved it, it apparently went somewhere and I cannot find it now. I suspect (yes, I have stooped to the level of suspicion) that, had a used a "User page" to submit this second article, entitled Lincoln University School of Law, 1938 - 1955, I would be able to track it. So I cannot now locate this second article. Are editors supposed to use a new User page when submitting new articles? Can you help me? Can you help me locate the new article? Can you answer my questions?

How is a new "User page" created?

You can see your saved edits by clicking "My contributions" at the top of any page. If you save correctly at articles for creation then you can follow progress there. If you save incorrectly then it can fail anywhere. You can create a userspace page or any other page by entering the name in the search box and clicking a link on the resulting page. Start the name with User:Slidhome/ for userspace pages. But if you want somebody to see and review your page then it's safer to do as I said: "start at Wikipedia:Articles for creation and when you get to an edit window, do not remove the first line before saving". There is nobody whose job is creating anything in Wikipedia: it is entirely created by volunteers like yourself. You are probably best asking at the Punjabi Wikipedia, but I've not been able to determine whether there is a help page there or not. Technical glitch with URLs

If search for "University of Lincoln" (with cap on Lincoln), I get a different page to "University of lincoln".

This is a known issue with redirects; readers who are not logged in sometimes see old versions of a page when it is accessed through an alternative spelling. I have purged both pages to give the Wikipedia servers a kick, and that should have fixed it at this end. Template help

Minor Vandalism on article?

The lede of the article Chromosome 11 currently starts with the text "Chromosome 11000 . . .", and appears to have been altered from "Chromosome 11 . . ." in an edit at 23:20, 8 December 2011‎ by User 38.106.47.4. This edit looks to me to be incorrect (and pointless), and that User's (or Users') Talk page does not inspire me with confidence, but I lack sufficient knowledge of the subject to be certain that the edit was incorrect. Date format in accessdate parameter

I have observed in most articles that the date in accessdate parameter of {{citeweb}} is given in yyyy-mm-dd format.

How to move an article to the “waiting to be reviewed” category of articles for creation

Hi, I have been working on an article for “doForms” which does not ever seem to get listed in the “waiting to be reviewed” category of articles for creation. To add it to the queue for review, add the magic text {{subst:submit}} at the top and then save. You should then see a big yellow box beginning "Review pending". -- John of Reading (talk) 15:56, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(More) The draft article, Wikipedia:Articles for creation/doForms is unlikely to be accepted in its current form. Wikipedia does not aim to have a page on every company, only on those that other people have written about in reliable sources such as books, journals, newspapers and such like. I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 3.8 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. TOC help

Talk:Libertarian Movement (Italy) (edit | article | history | links | watch | logs)

An editor proposed a rewrite of the article that is hidden. However, the TOC of the Talk page includes all the headers and subheaders of the "hidden" text. I want to force no TOC after the subheading "A moderate rewrite proposal" and then force TOC back on at the end so if other editors add topic sections to the page, they will be indexed. disruptive editing from user

Hi. There is a disruptive editor User talk:Wingard (Thy don't have a user page) however they are obsessing over the number of episodes for Soap Operas such as Days of Our Lives and The Bold and the Beautiful. They insist that these AMERICAN soap operas' episode count should change according to the Canadian air dates. They are consistently getting involved in editing wars and are not responding to those reaching out to them. I ask that you can do something (like a warning) or something to make them stop! please. One of my fellow wikipedians (who are my friend) are in a fragile state and are considering leaving if blocked by this disruptive user. PLEASE do something. I would be very careful. I'm not sure File:Simplon eagle.jpg meets the requirements for transfer to Commons. As a work of sculpture by an artist who died only 30 years ago, it might still be subject to copyright and is therefore not free to use. Hello, I'm editing the History Section of the Beit Kama entry, and added three book references, using the template. Upon saving the change, the text looks fine, but at the bottom of the page there is a red error message, saying that the references won't show because I need a reflist. I have gone over the help page and tried some things, but have not figured out how to get it done.

If you could solve it for me that would be great, but it would be good to know how to do it next time myself without bothering y'all.

Need help editing

I work for this company and don't want to violate any COI rules. With 69 locations the company is big enough that it should be on Wikipedia. Can someone help me to keep it all Kosher?

The main problem is the lack of sources that demonstrate notability. I looked at all of the sources that you have listed and none of them meet the guidelines at WP:RS. They merely repeat what the company has said in its press releases and do not provide any additional commentary about the company and what it does. Take a look at the guidelines at WP:CORP for guidance as to the notability of companies. And please also take a look at WP:COI and WP:BESTCOI. – ukexpat (talk) 21:59, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
All you need really bear in mind are Wikipedia:Notability and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. As long as the COI is declared, there is (as far as I know) no rules against an editor creating or editing an article they are closely tied to or even the subject of. There will in most cases be a greater deal of scrutiny of edits by known COI editors, but a thick skin and a good article later, and who cares about a little scrutiny? I found a snapshot of my Wikipedia userpage here, and as I'm not too familiar with Wikipedia copyright I'm wondering if I'm allowed to ask the webmaster of that site to remove the snapshot. —Entropy (T/C) 21:53, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If they provide proper attribution ("You agree that a hyperlink or URL is sufficient attribution under the Creative Commons license." -text below editing window), then there's not much you can do. The site is currently listed among Wikipedia mirrors and forks at Wikipedia:Mirrors_and_forks/Vwxyz#wpedia, but it looks like no-one's investigated its license compliance, as it's not listed at Wikipedia:CC-BY-SA_Compliance. You might be able to add it to the appropriate section.
Something that might help keep your userpage off mirrors is adding {{NOINDEX}}. That's an instruction to webcrawlers to ignore the page, although I don't believe they're legally obliged to do so. If you really don't want your userpage appearing elsewhere, one trick might be to keep a screenshot of it at an image hosting website, and keep nothing at Wikipedia except a link to that file.
To answer your original question, I don't believe there's anything stopping you from asking the webmaster to remove the snapshot, although they'd be under no legal obligation to do so for the reason given by TNXMan.

New User Help

I published my first article today on Sam Bollier. Unfortunately, his last name came out in lower case. How do I fix it? Separately, how do I ask for help on evaluating notoriety? In my world, he is notable because he is one of the main correspondents from an Arab media outlet covering the 2012 elections in the United States. Rather than "Notoriety" we need to consider a subject's Wikipedia:Notability. On the contrary. Since the date was entirely unsourced, I've removed it from the article. And Entropy, I suggest you read WP:BLP - we can, and do, remove content from Wikipedia on a regular basis.
