Question from Aphestus (07:48, 20 May 2024)
Hello.... How does editing work? Apparently my nitwit of a brother got himself banned indefinitely last night, according to what he told me, which wasn't much, he was merely telling the truth(although, I do know he can be rather aggressive in telling or describing) on a topic that needed "serious revision and rectification," and that he wasn't being heard or taken seriously.... Quite the contrary in my astute opinion. So, back to my question, how does editing work, as I'd love to be a contribution to what I call the earthly version of "encyclopedia Galactica." --Aphestus (talk) 07:48, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Aphestus: Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! I'll send you a list of some helpful links shortly on your talk page. As for how you can contribute, I would read Help:Getting started. There's also a list of things you can do at the Task Center. Some things that I did starting out was linking pages and finding citations (there's a fun little tool for finding citations here). If you need anything or have any questions, you can ask me or volunteers at the Teahouse. Cheers! Relativity ⚡️ 00:59, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
DYK for Boot Monument
On 25 May 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Boot Monument, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that a boot is the only monument in the United States dedicated to the traitor Benedict Arnold because it "was the only part of Arnold not to later turn traitor"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Boot Monument. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Boot Monument), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hello, I am the person that created my fathers wikipedia page years ago. Frank Garcia Paleontologist. I tried to add my name as his daughter but I was rejected. May I send you my birth certificate to prove it? --Aubreychandler (talk) 23:24, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Aubreychandler: Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! Wikipedia's information comes from published, reliable sources. Adding information that might be true but isn't published in a reliable source would be considered original research and therefore can't be added. If there is a published reliable source that shows you as his daughter, feel free to add it! Cheers, and let me know if you have any further questions Relativity ⚡️ 21:46, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

How to work in Wikipedia --Rajesh.M.666666 (talk) 09:16, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Rajesh.M.666666: Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! There are all kinds of things that you can do here. One thing that you should do is check the Task Center. Some more suggestions of what you can do are available on your homepage. For a list of policies and guidelines you have to follow here on Wikipedia, check this page and this page. One recommendation from me personally is to use the citation hunt tool to find citations for uncited material, which is actually really important work. A message from Belko05
Belko05 (talk) 00:07, 13 June 2024 (UTC) Hello Relativity, I'm the guy that made the edit on Pedro Miguel Arce about his cause of death. It stated on the second citation (with is from Bloody Disgusting), that Arce died from cancer. I was just adding something that technically was already there. It also included an Instagram post which stated that, "After a brief battle with cancer, Pedro passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family"
Also on an unrelated note, are we allowed to give the name of the Belgrade school shooter here because many news sites gave his name as Kosta Kecmanovic.

- @Belko05: I didn't check your edit extensively, I just saw that you added new information without adding a new source. I did check the source, and yes, you are right, it was technically sourced already. I've reverted my own edit there. A message from Ksenjamajanov
hey! i made a major revision to my Whistlegraph draft, such as an infobox, notable works paragraph, disbandment paragraph, images, more citations, etcetera.
Ksenjamajanov, 6/19/24 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ksenjamajanov (talk • contribs) 02:58, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hello @Ksenjamajanov:. I am on mobile so expect typos. The draft is still not ready for mainspace yet. It is definitely looking better tone-wise and reads less like an advertisement. An infobox is nice but is definitely not a requirement for anythingExtra information is nice. However, our ultimate criteria for inclusion is notability, and I’m not seeing why Whistlegraph is notable enough to warrant a Wikipedia article. Please read WP:GNG. The band’s own website cannot be used to establish notability, and neither can their music video or an instagram post (see WP:IND) Your other sources are not going to be enough to establish the band’s notability; also, see WP:Reliable sources. The amount of followers someone has does not mean that a subject is notable Wikipedia-wise. At this point I don’t think that you’ll be able to establish the band’s notability. However, if the band does eventually meet Wikipedia’s notability standards and has the required sourcing, then it could merit an article then. Cheers and let me know if you have any questions, although as I am travelinp, I probably won’t be able to respond promptly. Happy editing! Question from Finlitfan (19:59, 20 August 2024)
Hi there, if I have a Wikipedia page that a friend created for me, can I edit it myself? Or do I need to ask someone else to do it for me? Just wondering. I'm not aware of any errors. --Finlitfan (talk) 19:59, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Finlitfan: Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! This question is a little more complicated than a simple "yes" or "no". We have a guideline on Wikipedia about Conflict-of-interest editing. In this case, both you and your friend would have a conflict of interest on the article on you. Therefore, both of you would have to follow the instructions written at the link that I linked above. In addition, if you paid your friend to write the article for you, please take a look at paid editing, although this is not necessarily the case. Could I ask which page? I could give you more specific instructions if I knew. Anyways, happy editing. Let me know if you have any further questions, I'm always here to help Relativity ⚡️ 23:47, 20 August 2024 (UTC)

Question from Eandvwigle (04:06, 28 August 2024)
Assuming that you are unable to find a citation for something tagged as citation needed, would it be appropriate to replace that information with something similar that you do have a citation to.
Additionally, is it appropriate to directly reference encoded material (such as a law or clause in a constitution) despite it not being academic or scholarly? --Eandvwigle (talk) 04:06, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Eandvwigle: Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! It'd be helpful if you can provide a link so I know specifically what you're talking about, so my answer might not perfectly fit what you're asking about. For your first question, I would check how old that citation needed tag is. If it's less than two months old, you probably should keep the information there since removing it would be premature. However, if that citation needed tag has been there for quite some time, I would remove the info and replace it with what you've got. You also might want to leave a message on the talk page saying what information you removed, but that's totally optional.
- For your second question, it depends on the situation. (Please read WP:PRIMARY if you want to use that information for something directly on that law or clause itself.) Not all sources that are used on Wikipedia are scholarly or academic. We use news sources, books, etc. So what you're citing doesn't need to be academic or scholarly as long as it's reliable. However, please keep in mind that directly referencing a law of clause in a constitution is a) not going to help you establish notability and b) may put you in danger of one of the things outlined in WP:OR. Use your best judgement and be bold. Relativity ⚡️ 00:01, 29 August 2024 (UTC)

Question from DavidMagana (00:35, 3 September 2024)
Hi Mentor, I'm so thankful there is someone to bounce questions off as the info on Wiki is so vast. I have a question. I am attempting to create an article for an artist but I don't think I 'moved' it correctly. All info was properly sourced and cited. I read through the applicable instruction pages (Talk, Move, Mainspace, etc) but I continue to encounter the error of the page being called 'Talk'. And now it looks like it's been removed. Can you provide any advice? Once I figure this out, there are a few other Articles that I'd like to create based upon my interests in the NYC art scene. Thanks! Page: http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Jo_Ellen_Van_Ouwerkerk --DavidMagana (talk) 00:35, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
- @DavidMagana: Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! Your problem is that you didn't actually move the page but instead you created a redirect— from draftspace, presumably— to the article mainspace. That isn't allowed, so Jo Ellen Van Ouwerkerk has been deleted. Please read Wikipedia:Cross-namespace redirects. In the future, you can create your draft using WP:AFC (take a look at that link) and a reviewer such as myself will review the draft, and if it's suitable for Wikipedia, we can move it properly into the mainspace. Thanks for asking, and let me know if you have any further questions. Relativity ⚡️ 01:06, 3 September 2024 (UTC)

Question from Theatrebuff1989 (12:29, 6 September 2024)
Hi RElativity! I wonder if I can sense check something with you please: I have created a new draft article for review (Draft: Dafydd Rogers). The reason I created it was because I noticed that the page on the producing partnership between two well known UK producers (DAvid Pugh and Dafydd Rogers) had been edited after the dissolution of the partnership, writing one of them out of the record. I think this was actually in very bad faith. I added back the name of Rogers to the article now named for the other (David Pugh) and then created a separate entry for Rogers. Almost all of the citations in the Pugh entry refer to the partnership so I think the criteria for notability is equal between the two. My article was then almost immediately declined as it was identified as being too similar to the other. I think this is because the partnership (David Pugh and Dafydd Rogers) and the name Dafydd Rogers redirects to the single entry (David Pugh) which gives the misleading impression that the Pugh article is definitive when in fact this entry was renamed from David Pugh and Dafydd Rogers to David Pugh. I think I've supported my draft with citations that demonstrate notability and I think there is an argument to be made for each man having their own entry as they are both continuing to be active independently of each other and had lives before they met each other as well. My question for you is - can I convey this so that the article is not declined for the same reason again and do you have any advice about whether it is possible to edit the redirect which artificially creates the problem in the first place (and I think has been wilfully exploited to write one person out of the partnership). I hope that makes sense? Please let me know what you think. This is my first entry to Wikipedia so I'm learning as I go along! Thanks in advance! --Theatrebuff1989 (talk) 12:29, 6 September 2024 (UTC)

Hi! You were assigned my mentor, so I have a question: previously my IP address (or something similar, this is a different computer from when I first found out) was somehow used to maliciously edit the cite. Could there be complications from this? --Starline Ships (talk) 03:51, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
- I would also like to note that the person that maliciously edited the cite was NOT me. Starline Ships (talk) 04:03, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Starline Ships: Likely no. It depends on a couple of things, such as how recent the edit was, but it shouldn't affect you. Certain IP ranges have a lot of traffic to them, yet editors on them still find a way to edit. You should be fine. Let me know if anything changes Relativity ⚡️ 02:01, 24 September 2024 (UTC)

Question from Allyourfavoritebands (20:23, 27 September 2024)
I would like to create a Wikipedia page for my new music project. I've been practically preparing for this my entire life. 20 years have been invested into my musical endeavors and I am currently on the rise and turning it into a career. I would like to create an article citing my music and to ensure the accuracy of the information portrayed on WikiPedia --Allyourfavoritebands (talk) 20:23, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Allyourfavoritebands: On Wikipedia, we need proof that your project is notable enough to warrant its own article. This means it must be supported by reliable sources that are independent of your project. (Also, take a look at Wikipedia:Verifiability and the links I've put in this response.) Since you were the one who made this project, you could also have a conflict of interest and I suggest you take a look at this guide to managing a conflict of interest. It is strongly discouraged for you to create an article on this project yourself, because you would be biased and therefore may not write in a way that adheres to our neutrality policy. If your project is truly notable, someone else will create an article about it when the time is right. Question from Apon220 (03:26, 16 October 2024)
How can I add an article about my business --Apon220 (talk) 03:26, 16 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hello @Apon220, and welcome to Wikipedia! The simple answer is: creating an article about your own business is strongly discouraged. The long answer is that the problem with you creating an article about your business is that you will be biased in writing that article. On Wikipedia, we are very strict about keeping our articles with a neutral point of view, and since you would be writing about your own business, it would be much harder for you to adhere to that. In addition, you would have a conflict-of-interest (please read WP:PSCOI for more information on this) and therefore would have to abide to our policy on paid editing. If your company is truly notable, someone else will create an article about it someday. One last point: if someone offers to create an article for you for a fee, this is a scam (read WP:SCAM for more information and what do do just in case that happens). Anyways, have a great day, and let me know if you have any further questions! Relativity ⚡️ 02:57, 17 October 2024 (UTC)

Question from Professorozad (21:36, 21 October 2024)
Request for Neutral Wording on Fethullah Gülen's Description.
Death in 2024, October 20 , Request for Neutral Wording on M. Fethullah Gülen's Description
Hello,
I would like to propose a revision regarding the description of Fethullah Gülen in the "Deaths in 2024" list. Currently, the page refers to him as the "leader of FETÖ," which is a term used by the Turkish government and is politically charged. However, Wikipedia aims to maintain a neutral point of view, especially in politically sensitive topics.
As an Islamic scholar and preacher with a significant following around the world, Gülen is a controversial figure, but not universally recognized as the leader of a terrorist organization. Many international sources and observers refer to him as the leader of the Gülen movement, which promotes education and interfaith dialogue.
Therefore, I kindly request that the description be revised as follows:
Original: "Fethullah Gülen, 83, Turkish Muslim scholar and preacher, leader of FETO, heart and kidney failure." Suggested Revision: "Fethullah Gülen, 83, Turkish Muslim scholar, preacher, and leader of the Gülen movement, passed away due to heart and kidney failure." --Professorozad (talk) 21:36, 21 October 2024 (UTC)

Hello, this is my first time creating a wikipedia page for a client. Could you please walk me thorugh how to do this successfully? --Baeomiritter (talk) 19:22, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Baeomiritter: Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! You must follow the guidelines at Wikipedia:Paid editing. You will have to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation— that page has the instructions how. One important thing to note is that articles on Wikipedia must be notable enough to warrant inclusion, cited with reliable sources, and must be written in a neutral point of view. If you can't manage to fulfill these three things, there's nothing you can do to get the article published here. Cheers, and let me know if you have any further questions. Question from Jvanachteren (09:48, 28 October 2024)
Hey! I wanted to publish this article, but I don't know how to change draft to publish. I read that I may not have the rights. Can you give me advise on the next step? http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Draft:E-A-T --Jvanachteren (talk) 09:48, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Jvanachteren: Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! To submit a draft for review, start editing the page in source mode, not visual editor (if you need help with this let me know) and add
{{subst:submit}}
to the top of the page. Hopefully, your article will be reviewed promptly— although we do have a long-ish queue. - However, just from a quick glance, I think that it's unlikely that this draft will be accepted without some changes. Reading Help:Your first article is important to find out how you can correct those issues (if you can at all). One problem that stands out to me is your citations. You'll need to convert them to inline citations instead of a list at the end. This page can help with that. The second problem is the sources themselves. Google is not a source— it is a search engine. You'll have to cite the source that Google gets the information from. I don't know about the second source, but the third source is a blog, which has to follow WP:BLOG. Please see Wikipedia:Reliable Sources for what sources are acceptable or not. If you want to find out if and how you can fix these problems, it's helpful to read the pages I linked here. If you have any further questions, let me know.
