Speedy deletion of Michael Tompkins

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Michael Tompkins requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Synchronism (talk) 00:04, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RE:Adoption

[edit]

In terms of adding categories, you first have to find the cat (that's the short-hand most people use) you want (WP:CAT may help). If you want to make one, it is good to have at least 20 pages you could categorize with it. Then, you add it to the page you want it on with Category:Example cat.

As for a redirect page, you just create a page as you normally would and then type in #REDIRECT [[Link]]. The page will automatically redirect (there are soft redirects too, but those come later).

And no, you're not dumb at all! Everyone asks these question at one point; how else would we learn? :) And sure, I'd love to adopt you! Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 06:16, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I guess you could add an adoption userbox to your page ({{adoptee|Master of Puppets}}); not really any other way of making it official. I'll add an {{adopter|Jonathan321}} box to my page. Sound good? :) Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 18:46, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DYK: Mike Tompkins

[edit]
Updated DYK query On 14 November, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Mike Tompkins, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

A belated DYK notice.... Congrats, nonetheless. --PFHLai (talk) 14:33, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome, Jonathan321.
Good Job, rookie. Keep it up! Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 13:51, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Whoa, great job!!! I'm impressed! Now write a featured article. :P Just kidding, though this is certainly very impressive. Do you think article writing is the main thing you'd like to do? Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 23:58, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, whatever you'd like to do is what you do. Don't let anybody coax you into doing something, because then Wikipedia gets boring and you leave and it sucks and so forth.
If you're interested in template work, there are quite a few Wikiprojects that could help out, or you can just go and take initiative on your own. Article writing is tough but rewarding; so far I've written about 10, mostly for T:ITN, which is a place that needs new articles daily (I'm not trying to force you into anything, just giving you options). Whatever you choose, make sure you actually want to do it! :) Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 19:48, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Blocking people

[edit]

Hey Jonathan!

I saw you make this edit. If you think someone should be blocked, you should report them on Administrator intervention against vandalism if they are making simple vandalism or on the incidents noticeboard if the matter is more complex. Just letting you know. Cheers! J.delanoygabsadds 04:47, 15 November 2008 (UTC) November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is not a problem. I was telling you so that you would know. There is no reason you should be expected to automatically know that, so don't worry about it. J.delanoygabsadds 15:43, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Huggle and Twinkle

[edit]

Hey! While I hear twinkies are good, Twinkle is even better. ;) Basically, Twinkle uses javascript to automate some things, such as reverting without the rollback permission, reporting a user to a noticeboard, speedy deleting a page, and so on (the list goes on at WP:TW). Huggle is an external tool that, in a nutshell, converts you into an anti-vandal machine; you can report and revert vandals with 2 clicks or less.

Basically, TW is more versatile, while Huggle is faster but only for vandalism. Make sense? :) Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :D 20:27, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, and my signature is stored at User:Master of Puppets/Sig; then, in my preferences, I transclude it as {{subst:User:Master of Puppets/Sig}}. In terms of coding, that depends on what you'd like in your sig. Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :D 20:29, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I cannot emphasise enough to disregard the above advice, which will at the very least get you a warning for violating Wikipedia's policy on signatures, and in the case of repeat offences (theoretically) get you blocked, should you be caught doing it. – iridescent 22:59, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, Iridescent was just confused. He would have a point if I had told you to use an unsubstituted template as your signature. However, as long as you substitute it in your preferences (as I showed above), all will be well. Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :D 23:24, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, yes, didn't notice the "subst:". I'd still advise against it though – there's no particular reason to use a separate signature file as opposed to the signature box in Preferences (the only reason would be that the Preferences box limits you to 255 characters, but anyone with a 300-character sig would likely get Strong Words Of Advice fairly quickly) and even with a subst'ed signature, there's always the possibility that a passing vandal will decide to "improve" it and you'll be signing your posts "i am a faggot lol" until someone notices. – iridescent 23:49, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This vandal would have to be very determined to find out where you were linking from; also, I've had this signature since 2005, when the markup language was much more picky. It didn't work if I just put it into the box, so I had to subst in a template. Maybe raw code works now... Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :D 00:17, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just add the AFD to the top of the latest day (for the 26th, here). There are detailed instructions here. Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :D 02:21, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AFD advice

[edit]

Hey! Just droppin' by to tell you that you're doing a great job! Of course, remember not to edit too much; I know that sounds strange to say, but some people edit frantically during their first month or so and then burn out.

Anyway, some tips for AFD;

  • Try not to let google hits determine your perception of someone/something's notability. For example, searching 'Bob the Builder' and expecting to get results only about the rapper won't work.
  • While I know you didn't have bad intentions, avoid asking people to vote in AfDs; that's canvassing, which a lot of people get riled up about.

So don't worry, you haven't done anything wrong; that's just some stuff I felt you could incorporate. Great job so far! Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :D 07:24, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Users United Kingdom & Northern Ireland and Cyrusmilleyhannana

[edit]

Not only did United Kingdom & Northern Ireland (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) put up a copy of the UK article as his user page, but he also edited the user page of Cyrusmilleyhannana (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log), which was a copy of the Scotland article. There's something a little suspect with the editing patterns of those two users, I suspect; the latter has been tagged as a suspected sockpuppet, though the link isn't clear to me at first glance. —C.Fred (talk) 15:56, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

ARBCOM elections

[edit]

They let users vote on who they think should be the next arbitrators. Basically, arbs are elected to a three-year-term where they serve the community by resolving the most serious disputes. It isn't a tech position, unlike administrators or bureaucrats; rather, they just get to vote on aforementioned disputes. Generally, they're established, trusted users. I didn't delete anything without reason... Did you actually read the article and see what this Wordwright turned it into? How lame and droll his writing is ... and full of personal opinions which is against policy by the way. It gives me a headache tor ead it. And then he writes an essay ripping me apart in the Discussion. Did you bothering reading that as well? Calling me "uncivil person". He never even bothered to message me about it. As yet there appear to be no international implications arising from this. Blagojevich is not the first politicial person at this level to have such chrages brought against them, for all I know he may not even be the first US senator to be so charged. Thuis while it is worthy of inclusion in 2008 in the United States it does not meet the requirements for inclusion in2008 unless/until there are international repercussions. Cheers, DerbyCountyinNZ (talk) 09:01, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Templating

[edit]

Oh, sorry, my mistake. :( Well, finding them isn't really hard; regrettably, lots of articles have areas which are severely lacking. Usually the easiest way is going through the new articles log (Special:Newpages/here); anything that is yellow will either be delete-worthy or in need of serious fixing. White articles may also be badly-written and in need of templating. Mind you, that could get boring, so don't try to do too much. :) Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :D 21:54, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, sadly that's also not too bad of a method. Whatever works, I guess! Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :D 21:58, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

{{rollbacker}} should do it. Let me preview to see if that works...
Yep, most definitely. You just have to position it with some code; if you want it at the top right the code would be:
<div style="position:absolute; z-index:100; right:20px; top:30px;" class="metadata" id="rollbacker">{{rollbacker}}</div>
Sound good? :D Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :D 05:41, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I am still awaiting your response and will like to know why you feel that edit from me was not constructive? If that was an error, could you remove that message from my talkpage? --RoadAhead =Discuss= 01:17, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jonathan. It appears you made an error regarding my edits as well. Since your warning template failed to cite any particular article, I can only assume from your own edit history that you are tagging my edit to Stephen Gamson as a removal of content. Like the above message from RoadAhead, I think we all know this was an honest mistake. I need to ask of you a few of things, though. I'd personally like to see you define all your fields in warning templates, so that an editor you are tagging has some sort of reference as to what article the warning refers, and can thus hopefully correct their behavior. Your edit history is filled with examples of undefined warning tags, and I can only imagine the number of confused editors who were wondering what you were talking about, regardless of whether or not the tag was appropriately placed. Additionally, since I am not a huge fan of removing content from my talk page (imagine my shock at being accused over unjustly removing content!) I'd appreciate either you removing the edit yourself, or issuing some sort of retraction on my page. And lastly, check out this essay regarding templating regulars. If you have any questions, please feel free to drop me a line. Cheers, Steamroller Assault (talk) 07:52, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You know, that's actually a really good idea, especially for a theoretical starting point. Maybe like BLP FAs, and since it can be (apparently) turned on by categories, have it chucked in a template like the {{NOINDEX}} function's template. Hi, I think your move was wrong. The idea is that if there is no primary usage for a term, then the disambiguation page goes at that name, without "(disambiguation)". Only if there is a primary usage does the disambiguation page go at "xxx (disambiguation)". See WP:DABNAME. Terms in brackets ("disambiguators") are only needed when there's something else at the name without the disambiguator, and the same applies to "(disambiguation)". Eulogy

[edit]

Do you really think this is appropriate? I'm fairly certain Ecoleetage wants to disappear, and a fond eulogy in light of what he's done seems highly inappropriate. I know you miss your wiki-friend, but this seems like a drama magnet to me. AniMatetalk 04:31, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I just don't understand what the point is. Users leave everyday, and we don't write eulogies for them. We especially don't write eulogies for indefinitely blocked users who have tried to get good faith contributors fired from their jobs. So you know, in the past we have had users who have harassed other editors in real life. Eulogies weren't written. Restraining orders, however, were obtained. I certainly won't delete the eulogy from your user space, but I'm going to remove the link from Eco's talk page and delete the unnecessary redirect you added in Wikipedia space. Sorry. AniMatetalk 04:44, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry you feel betrayed. However, my guess is that most people will react to this the way I am. He seemed okay, clearly wasn't, and doesn't deserve any sympathy. Calling a fellow editor's employer to get them fired or disciplined over Wikipedia is reprehensible. If you're trying to make yourself feel better through writing though, I'd suggest a blog or a journal. Wikipedia isn't therapy, and I still think removing your eulogy would be the best course of action. That being said, I can't stress how sorry I am that you feel betrayed and hope this doesn't sour you on Wikipedia too much. I'm not super active these days due to work, but I'll be keeping an eye out for you. The majority of us aren't bad guys... though it must be said that sharing personal info is never a good idea at your age. I'm sure you know that, but if you've been sharing any details of your personal life on or off wiki (full name, location, phone number, etc.) stop immediately. Personally, I almost never communicate off-wiki, and the few times I have done so were with long term, trusted administrators. if you have revealed personal info, I'd consider shutting this account down immediately, and starting over. You've seen the effects that too much personal info has had on an adult, the thought of what it could do to a minor is chilling. Again, i'll keep an eye out for you on-wiki. AniMatetalk 05:36, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's done. Just remember what i said about personal information. Be safe and smart... though the smart hardly seems necessary as you appear quite intelligent. AniMatetalk 05:44, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If I could weigh in; I don't see what's wrong with remembering somebody you respect, AniMate. Just because the 'norm' isn't to do so doesn't mean one can't express a sliver of human emotion; I'm fine with people thinking Wikipedia should be a place of professional, business-like volunteering, but that still doesn't mean that we can't remember those who left once in a while. Of course, that's just my opinion, and, as you said, people of our age should be more careful about what we do around here. :P Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :D 22:26, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Why was my article tagged for speedy?

[edit]

I haven't really put an article up for deletion before so that was a mistake on my part. However, the article was extraordinarily short, incorrectly formatted and referenced. (Sorry if that sounds harsh) Thus, it had to be deleted. If you would like to keep that article, please use a sandbox to thoroughly expand it before posting back into the mainspace. For a good example on how to make an article on a Tropical Depression, read over Tropical Depression Ten (2005) and follow that style. Cheers, Cyclonebiskit 20:19, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

For a Tropical Cyclone article, we try to keep all articles above 6kb in length. I don't mean to discourage you from editing the article, but could you use a sandbox for the time being to work on it. If you have any questions about how to make the article just ask myself or one of the other members of WikiProject Tropical cyclones. Thanks, 20:34, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

My RFA passed today at 150/48/6. I wanted to thank you for weighing in, and I wanted to let you know I appreciated all of the comments, advice, criticism, and seriously took it all to heart this past week. I'll do my absolute best to not let any of you down with the incredible trust given me today. rootology (C)(T) 07:47, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

RfA thanks

[edit]

Thank you for the trust you placed in me by supporting my RfA (which passed and, apparently, I am now an admin!). I will do my best to continue to act in a way that is consistent with the policies of wikipedia as well with our common desire to build and perfect this repository of human knowledge; and can only hope that you never feel that your trust was misplaced. Thanks again! --Regent's Park (Rose Garden) 23:52, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Request to participate in University of Washington survey on tool to quickly understand Wikipedians’ reputations

[edit]

Hello. I'm part of a research group at the University of Washington. In April, we met with Wikipedians to learn what they would like to know about other editors’ history and activities (within Wikipedia) when interacting with them on talk pages. The goal was to gather feedback to help design a tool that could quickly communicate useful information about other Wikipedians. We have now created a few images that we feel represent some of what our participants thought was important. We would appreciate it if you took a few minutes of your time to complete an online survey that investigates whether or not these images would be useful to you. Your quick contribution would be very valuable to our research group and ultimately to Wikipedia. (When finished, the code for this application will be given over to the Wikipedia community to use and/or adjust as they see fit.)

We are particularly interested in feedback from new editors! We want to make sure this tool meets your needs.

Willing to spend a few minutes taking our survey? Click this link.

Please feel free to share the link with other Wikipedians. The more feedback, the better! The survey is completely anonymous and takes less than 10 minutes to complete. All data is used for university research purposes only.

Thank you for your time! If you have any questions about our research or research group, please visit our user page. Commprac01 (talk) 23:31, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup participates in the Wikipedia:The Great Wikipedia Dramaout

[edit]

Hello all, iMatthew here. I just wanted to let you know about "The Great Wikipedia Dramaout" which starts this Saturday. The goal of the Dramaout is to spend five days working on improving articles and abstaining from any of Wikipedia's drama. I don't think that any of you will have a problem focusing on articles for five days, because of course, any work you get done during the Dramaout will count towards your score in the WikiCup. Details are on the page; hope to see you all signing up! :) iMatthew talk at 00:27, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome back!

[edit]

Hey! Long time no speak! I hope the break was good; I took one a while ago, due to preparation for university and a busy real life. Now I've got some time to edit, so hopefully I can stick around longer! How's it going, though? Everything good? :)
In terms of changes, there have been a bunch of minor ones; nothing too drastic, though. There are two major changes I'll let you know about, though; the first is that they're offering free access to the beta redesign of Wikipedia, so feel free to try that out (you can go back to normal Wikipedia at any time). The more important one, however, is that we're implementing flagged revisions quite soon! It'll change the way a lot of Wikipedia will work in terms of normal editing, so I suggest you read the page for a summary and an idea of everything.
That's all I can think of right now, at least, so I hope it helps! As usual, if you have any questions, I'd love to answer them at my talk page. Welcome back! Master of Puppets 07:42, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There are a lot of people who feel as you do, haha. I've tested them out at the test platform and they're not too bad. However, on a massive scale such as the one we have at Wikipedia, it probably will tend to work quite differently. Guess we'll just have to wait and see, though! hahayoufail

[edit]

Hi Jonathan, the edit that i made, then deleted, that you then reverted was one that i deleted because i had made it on hahayoufail's userpage, rather than his talk page - i copied the message that i had originally made and put in on his talk page instead. Can i remove it from his user page? Darigan (talk) 16:38, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm at least as much at fault, first for putting the message on the wrong page, and second for (what technically amounts to) blanking the user page without offering an edit summary. Best Darigan (talk) 16:43, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The 2009 WikiCup Participant Award
This WikiCup Award is presented to Jonathan321 for their participation in the 2009 WikiCup. Your contributions along the way have greatly improved the quality of many articles, pictures, and sounds on the English Wikipedia.

Congratulations! Hope to see you sign up for the 2010 WikiCup, here, if you haven't already! iMatthew talk at 22:46, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your RfA !vote

[edit]

I was glad to see you having some fun on the RfA page with your "WP:POINT" neutral !vote. I like to bring some cheer to those pages myself sometimes, as you may have noticed. However, I really didn't think it was fair to the candidate to have his thus-far unanimous RfA tally spoiled by a humorous comment, so I've stricken the !vote as a formal part of the tally. I hope you'll understand why I thought this was appropriate, but if you have any questions, please let me know. Newyorkbrad (talk) 03:20, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

(Following up to your post on my talk) I wasn't offended; I was amused by what you were doing, but I just didn't want it to affect the actual count at the end of the RfA. Please don't be upset or demoralized. Regards, Newyorkbrad (talk) 21:05, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
