It's good to know that there are still some sane users on Wikipedia who see the facts for what they are. Whenever somebody tries to strive for accurate facts, they get harassed or ganged up on. I can't even begin to tell you how much of that I've been through. And for someone who's been through what I've been through on Wikipedia, being appreciated means a lot to me; especially when my faults have been strongly criticized, but almost all my positive input (which constitutes over ten thousand edits) gone largely ignored. Thank you for acknowledging me good efforts.--NadirAli نادر علی (talk) 22:18, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome messages

Is there a reason you've been welcome-spamming absent editors, some which haven't edited since 2010? It's largely considered disruptive to do such editing. Primefac (talk) 12:37, 11 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Primefac: oh! I wasn't aware it was disruptive. I figured the redlinks to their talk pages meant no one ever welcomed them to begin with and my message would help bring them back from their multi-year absence. Thanks & a question

[edit]

DoctorWho42,

Thanks for you nice letter of welcome to the Wikipedia community. I have already reviewed all (well, maybe most) of the documents & guidelines you suggested. However, not all of it makes a lot of sense to me in that I can't read computer jargon. It's one of the downsides of being 61 & having grown up in the pre-computer age. So here's my question:

Whenever I do a citation for a website, when it prints out on the cites list at the bottom of the article, there's a link that reads url=value (help). But when I click on help, it takes me to a page of jargon that I honestly don't understand. Can you explain, using simple words and short sentences (ha-ha), what info I'm missing? And where on the citation template I should put it?

Thanks in advance.

James P. Van Dyke, I assume you're talking about The Cape Canaveral Monsters. Welcoming users

[edit]

Hi there. Please don't indiscriminately spam welcome messages at new users. You are leaving only one of the many welcome messages, and this can be problematic. Spamming a single basic and generic good faith welcome interferes with one of the mechanisms for dealing with problematic new users, as it removes (or mades more difficult) the ability to use one of the welcome messages tailored to specific problematic scenarios. That means that a problem user may be getting a cheerful welcome which fails to provide guidance on the area where they need guidance. It also means that bad faith new users are getting mixed messages. There are also a wide variety of good faith welcome messages, some with many more helpful links, others specific to particular subject areas. Welcoming is good, but it needs to be a carefully considered thing, and not just spammed out at a high rate. Thanks. Murph9000 (talk) 20:24, 23 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Murph9000: Hey, thanks for that. What other templates should I use for spam or users whose names may not fit Wikipedia guidelines?-🐦Do☭torWho42 (📼) 21:21, 23 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, sorry for the delay. Your ping was non-functional, as they don't work if you add them in a subsequent edit. For a successful ping, I believe all of the following need to be true: 1) new edit and new line/paragraph, 2) link to user page of the person to be pinged (which can be via a template), 3) a recognisable sig. Anyway, here's your answer: Wikipedia:Welcoming committee/Welcome templates. For people who have made good edits (and assuming no specific issues such as first article, images, copyright, NPOV, COI, foreign language, etc), I tend to go with the menu / graphical choice. Note the guidance given on those pages about welcoming, that welcoming should come after they have edited (and once there are sufficient edits to properly judge their status or any issues), and that bad faith contributors should not get a good faith welcome. I.e. it should always be after properly assessing their editing. In the case of obvious vandalism-only or spam-only users, it's quite normal not to give any welcome (not even the vandal / spam welcome). There's really no point wasting the bytes of the welcomes for vandals / spammers on the worst cases, only those who are more borderline cases. Murph9000 (talk) 19:06, 26 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. When using certain templates (such as welcome templates and user warnings) on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. Indiscriminate spamming of welcome messages

[edit]

Hi, as previously mentioned by Primefac and myself, please do not indiscriminately spam welcome messages. There are a large number of different welcome messages which cover different scenarios. Indiscriminate spamming of messages interferes with using messages which are more appropriate. In particular, giving a good faith message out to vandals is counterproductive and frequently a waste of space. Even in non-malicious scenarios, there are messages which are intended to give specific help based on the user's contributions. If we wanted a standard welcome spammed at everyone, we would have a bot doing it. Thanks. Murph9000 (talk) 09:09, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

ah, that is fair. plus it is far better to make more productive edits than welcoming editors with only a few edits.-🐦Do☭torWho42 () 09:11, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for you welcoming message. I already have an account but have previously met with some severe criticism regarding some of my edits to remove what I considered to be self-serving obfuscations or outright falsehoods regarding this or that subject (e.g. the history of the Ashkenazi which conflicts greatly with the account given by the Jewish historian Arthur Koestler in his "The Thirteenth Tribe"). Also other topics such as certain reliably recorded but unflattering accounts of Koch Bros behaviors. Wikipedia seems highly allergic to truth in some cases which might involve litigation. And my edits are rare so why log in if I can make a small positive suggestion rather than an outright edit, no? 50.53.20.80 (talk) 16:08, 27 June 2017 (UTC)William Bjornson[reply]

A tag has been placed on User creation log requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section R2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect from the article namespace to a different namespace except the Category, Template, Wikipedia, Help, or Portal namespaces.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Fair. I was wanting to test the Template:Yes Nog on new users who may have popped up on Special:New user log to gauge reception, but I am more than fine with the talk page being blanked, etc.-🐦Do☭torWho42 () 07:12, 8 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Up to you. I was just confused why an editor a part of a mass attack got a glass of egg nog, and not me. Awesome username, by the way. :) Boomer VialHolla! We gonna ball!Contribs 09:46, 8 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

My editing

[edit]

Sorry. Like the English professor in the Men's Room said I don't write on the walls, I just correct the spelling and grammar.

When you edit a template, please make sure it still appears as expected when you transclude it. The "Usage" section you added to this template was outside the <noinclude> tags, and broke the display of the userbox. I've fixed it. If you've done the same to any other templates, please take a look at them and fix them as necessary. —swpbT go beyond 13:51, 19 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, DoctorWho42, please fix your mess. Adding "usage" was unnecessary anyway beyond the fact that you forgot to keep it inside the noinclude section. Chris Troutman (talk) 16:29, 19 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Userbox `usage` section

[edit]

Hello, I've noticed that you have been adding unhelpful "Usage" sections to many userbox pages, which are messing up my userpage. Could you please stop doing this? Thanks. AnAwesomeArticleEditor (talk) 18:20, 19 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! Thanks for reverting my edits. I wasn't aware they were disruptive until now, so kudos for letting me know. I won't include "Usage" sections next time!-🐦Do☭torWho42 () 18:44, 19 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Per the section above this one, it wasn't the inclusion of the "Usage" sections that was an issue, but rather not including the appropriate <noinclude>...</noinclude> tags to keep the text from being transcluded. Primefac (talk) 18:51, 19 December 2017 (UTC) (talk page stalker)[reply]
I just noticed the emphasis on the Wikiproject Userboxes re: "If <br> is required to organize the description of the Userbox make sure it is in the <noinclude></noinclude> tags[where?] as this causes major problems (e.g. userbox stacking). More work for us.". :S-🐦Do☭torWho42 () 18:58, 19 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
