Auto doc[edit]

Curious as to how come template documentation is going to auto doc, which can only be edited by admins and TEs? Now there are two open edit requests to edit the documentation. Shouldn't the documentation continue to be editable by non-TEs? P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 06:13, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I suspect you are talking about documentation for Module:WikiProject banner? This is produced by Module:WikiProject banner/templatepage which is only semi-protected, so any editor should feel free to edit and improve — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:17, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but Martin, most editors won't have a clue about editing a "module". Most barely know how to edit the unprotected /doc pages of a template. Why make it harder or even impossible for them? P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 22:42, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The only way to achieve autodoc is by using a module, so I don't know what the alternative is? Of course it is possible to not use the autodoc, and create documentation in the usual way. the advantage of creating it automatically is that is doesn't need to be maintained and will update when features are added/removed. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:40, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Forgive me Martin because I still haven't wrapped myself around this. The |DOC=auto parameter and argument makes it so that the documentation cannot be edited by any user and must be edited by TEs and admins. That seems to go counter to one of the main reasons for having a separate /doc page, doesn't it? I think it makes sense for these project banner templates to be protected, but what exactly is achieved by taking the ability to edit documentation away from all users?
In addition, I looked at the Module:WikiProject banner/templatepage, where the requested edit at Template talk:WikiProject Hinduism#Template-protected edit request on 15 March 2024 seems to require that module to be edited. I found where the section is – line 574, which starts the "Full usage" section, to line 597, which starts "Parameters" section – somewhere in the code between those lines appears to be where we can remove the redundant |importance= parameters (there are a total of five redundant (six total) instances of that parameter in the Full usage section of the {{WikiProject Hinduism}} project banner's documentation). My grasp of Lua is very basic and I don't have a clue how to do it. That takes us back to why on Earth would we make it so that all users cannot edit the documentation? and then leave it to only editors who have a good grasp of Lua? P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 02:17, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think the auto doc function is useful for project banners where no one has bothered to write any custom documentation. It can still be customised by removing |DOC=auto and writing your own instructions, if anyone wishes to. As explained above, it is not restricted to admins or TEs at all - the module is only semi-protected. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:49, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding the issue of the duplicated importance parameters. This is because the hinduism template uses the same |importance= parameter for 6 different purposes (general importance and five separate task force importances) so the module is getting confused. I should be able to sort that by checking that each parameter has not already been displayed. Leave it with me. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:52, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Paine Ellsworth I think I've fixed this now, please let me know if you have any other suggestions for improvement — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:28, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, thank you, Martin! I think it's great that you were able to fix that challenging issue of the |importance= parameter. I still hope it says something to you about how difficult it would be for other editors who, unlike you, are not well-versed in Lua and who wouldn't dream of tackling such a problem no matter how much nor how little protection the module has. Sorry Martin, so sorry, but I still think that it should at least be made easier for editors, not more difficult, to get to where an edit needs to be made, and that should come with explicit instructions in each and every instance of auto-documentation. And the removal of redundant instances of a parameter should be a whole lot easier, in my humble and sorry opinion. Best to you! P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 18:50, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How do can i upload a draft to article instantly? --CandyCola4444 (talk) 09:27, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A reviewer is trying to delete my articles from mainspace for no reason i already have provided all the sources he asked for --CandyCola4444 (talk) 14:12, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@CandyCola4444 I have moved all your questions to one section, so we can discuss here in one place — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:22, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You are not allowed to remove the deletion notice from the articles. Instead go to the deletion discussion Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pala invasion of Kannauj and write why you think the articles should not be deleted. It would help if you can find any more sources which cover these events. They look notable, but without significant coverage in multiple sources, they won't be allowed to stay — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:25, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Possible WikiProject banner optimization[edit]

Hey, I was looking at Template:WikiProject Television and was wondering if the module can be updated to handle the code with less boilerplate code being written. So for example, a standard task force there is written like this:

  |TF_3_LINK = Wikipedia:WikiProject Television/The Amazing Race task force
  |TF_3_NAME = the Amazing Race task force
  |TF_3_NESTED = The Amazing Race

I wonder if we can do something like this

|TF_style = task force
|TF_1 = The Amazing Race
|TF_2 = The Apprentice UK

and the LINK and NAME will be handled by the module automatically as it knows the style "task force" and it knows the NESTED name. If a specific task force needs to have a different value, then they can override TF_style with the same current style. This could also potentially work with ASSESSMENT_CAT and MAIN_CAT values.

Another item that can have the same treatment is the image size. Most of the images in this template use "x20px", so instead of repeatedly adding this value, we can use TF_SIZE = x20px and for any image that needs to override it they can specify a different value.

What do you think? Gonnym (talk) 07:14, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, good idea. We already have |TF_SIZE= (which is documented) and |TF_TEXT= (which is not yet documented!) which is possibly along the same lines you were thinking and recognises _NAME_, _LINK_ and _IMPORTANCE_. For example, you can define |TF_TEXT=This _PAGETYPE_ is supported by the [[_LINK_|_NAME_]] task force and assessed as _IMPORTANCE_-importance. Let's discuss further at the module talk page? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:02, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh nice. I'll check those out and sure. Gonnym (talk) 08:21, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

My article is for the battle on Kilduin, please do not make it about the ship. The ship should get its own article. Dencoolast33 (talk) 14:25, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please feel free to revert any of my changes, they are only suggestions. I don't think there will be enough materials for two different articles so if we are to have one article, then it made sense to me that it should be at Kilduin rather than the battle it was involved in — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:27, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! you do have a point, ill take that into consideration when making changes to the article, but there is very little information about the ship except for that battle. Dencoolast33 (talk) 14:35, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'm starting to realise that! There is sv:Kilduin (1788) but most of the content relates to the battle — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:37, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Issue on Module:WikiProject banner/sandbox[edit]

Hello, I think one of your edits to Module:WikiProject banner/sandbox created a table error which is reflecting on a few dozen pages, but I'm not seeing the issue, and not familiar with Module's code. Would you take a look and see if something pops out to you for this? Thanks, Zinnober9 (talk) 00:44, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Will check, thanks for reporting! — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 07:28, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Wenyunlu (03:55, 25 April 2024)[edit]

Hi Martin.

After editing a page, on the relevant source, it shows "Cited by user Wenyunlu on 25 Apr 2024" - how I remove this user information?

Thank you

Wenyun --Wenyunlu (talk) 03:55, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Wenyunlu on which page are you seeing this? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 07:27, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Martin.
I added one reference (ref 26) to this wiki page:
And then when I reach the webpage for that journal article and under "Altmertric",
It shows information like this:
"MALDI imaging
Cited by user Wenyunlu on 25 Apr 2024
My question is how to hide that "Cited by user Wenyunlu.." so that my username don't show up.
Thank you.
Wenyun Wenyunlu (talk) 13:26, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have no idea. That is produced by that website, and I don't think we have any control over that whatsoever — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:19, 26 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from BeacHal1 (09:35, 25 April 2024)[edit]

I’ve just had a note about vandalising wiki!!! How exactly have I vandalised anything? I would say the ‘editors’ that objected to the factual info I put up yesterday didn’t in fact edit they just removed my edit completely - which seems more like vandalism to me. I was accused of being paid which I wasn’t. This gallery is a non commercial space that needs help and doesn’t have big marketing teams behind it as most galleries do. I am amazed wiki allows for those publicity rife spaces which do have paid marketing teams etc etc and is going after someone trying to do good instead… It’s a bit depressing, frankly, as I was trying to flesh out the wiki site with people and places that are much more ethical environments --BeacHal1 (talk) 09:35, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

is there an ur document, source of where and how the whole banner shell thing came about? As a long term talk page tagger I find it hard to explain to people why and how the enthusiasm rose. I have been a rater user since it started (I think) and along with a few other issues with talk pages and the very weird array of projects that wikipedia has to offer, I think I might have missed the point where this industry came from. Any clues or links would be appreciated, thanks. JarrahTree 04:34, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Do you mean when the banner shell was first developed? Or are you referring to the recent change (WP:PIQA) where the banner shell is used to rate articles? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:21, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The latter... JarrahTree 09:18, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please see WP:PIQA and follow the link to the village pump proposal — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:51, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Intriguing, such coy and quiet beginnings to a wikipedia wide change, the humility is very hard to believe, and not a single extended talk page project tagging editor in sight in the whole discussion. Thanks for the link, there is insufficient broader explanation as to what is/has been going on, and I think for that, you folks (the industry) are your own detriment. There should have been a write up somewhere, as it affects the whole project. In view of the usual wikipedia wide things that get signpost or wider explanations, I think the a decided lack of publicity across the project is a major fault, regardless of the otherwise positive net benefit. Hi, now that you deleted Template:WPBannerMeta/hooks/taskforces/taskforce, could you change the default for |TASKFORCE_TEMPLATE= in Template:WPBannerMeta/hooks/taskforces and Template:WPBannerMeta/hooks/taskforces/core? Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 13:49, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What do you suggest I change it to? This is old deprecated code and no one should be using it for any future projects. I hope to remove all uses eventually — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 07:53, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I changed it to an error message. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 13:08, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Questions from BHelenaGG[edit]

Hi, I have created a draft Wiki Bio of Rachel Frances Alexander. But when I go to upload it for checking this is the message I receive:

No stashed content found for 0/0490841c-fd6a-11ee-911a-79a5389a15b9 Can you let me know what I should do? Thanks --BHelenaGG (talk) 10:11, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@BHelenaGG I have no idea! Where are you uploading it to? Can I suggest you try to create Draft:Rachel Frances Alexander with your content? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:50, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I think I have moved the article I created on Rachel Frances Alexander from my sandbox to be checked by other reviewers, but I am not sure. Can you see if it is pending checks? I am a new user so I know it wouldn't just upload direclty. Many thanks for your help. --BHelenaGG (talk) 08:57, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I can see User:BHelenaGG/sandbox but this is not yet submitted for review. I can do that for you, if you wish? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:45, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have published your article and made a few minor adjustments. Nice work! — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:38, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Could use some help debugging, the WPBS isn't translating the NA-class through to the various projects, and I'm losing my damn mind over it. I can set the class to Start, C, etc, but "Redirect" and "NA" don't seem to do anything. Primefac (talk) 18:07, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That is the intentional behaviour :) All NA-classes should be detected automatically. I'll take a look ... — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 06:42, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As soon as a redirect is proposed for deletion is stops being a redirect, and so is not automatically detected by the template. I have posted at Module talk:Pagetype to see if we can fix that — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:57, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, thanks for that. I still think setting |class=NA (or redir) should actually do what it says... I wouldn't be surprised if there are pages that a project didn't want to classify. Primefac (talk) 12:10, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Redirects under discussion should now be detected as redirects — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:54, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's great (legitimately, thanks for following up with that), but it still doesn't change the fact that if a page should (for whatever reason) manually be marked as NA, it cannot be. Primefac (talk) 10:01, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There was a lot of discussion about this when we started implementing PIQA. See Template talk:WikiProject banner shell/Archive 10#Ignore class on non-article pages? for some background. This was mainly about ignoring |class=redirect on pages which were not redirects, but it had the consequence that all non-article classes defined in |class= are now ignored, as they can be detected automatically — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:26, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, MSGJ,

I saw that this "draft" was due for CSD G13 deletion next week but it doesn't look like a draft at all but like a talk page for some other page. You were the last editor to edit the page so I thought I'd ask if this page should be moved elsewhere. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 04:20, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's a draft version of a template. Probably safe to delete — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:58, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @MSGJ, Thanks for that correction. It seems to be the second time or more than, I guess. Can you help me explain it well. Do you mean it isn't necessary adding it to the others when it already exist in the main shell. Regards! Safari ScribeEdits! Talk! 11:15, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, yes that is correct. Thanks! — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:16, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, MSGJ,

I noticed that you tagged Category:Articles using WikiProject banner shell with empty class parameter for CSD C1 speedy deletion. Would it also be suitable to remove the empty cat tag from parent category Category:Pages using WikiProject banner shell without a project-independent quality rating and tag it as an empty category? Just thought I'd check in about it. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 18:51, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
