WikiCup 2015 September newsletter
[edit]The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.
In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far Casliber (submissions) in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was Coemgenus (submissions) at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.
The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:
- Cas Liber (submissions), who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
- Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points), second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions), first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.
- Harrias (submissions), second in Pool A, took fourth overall. He tends to focus on articles about cricket and military history, specifically the 1640s First English Civil War.
- West Virginian (submissions), from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
- Rodw (submissions), from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about Scheduled monuments in Somerset and a FT about English Heritage properties in Somerset.
- Rationalobserver (submissions), from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
- Calvin999 (submissions), also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRs—48.
The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.
Good luck to the finalists; the judges are sure that the competition will be fierce!

Seeking your input
[edit]Greetings sir,
I'm seeking your input regarding the starter class article on Parwez, within the wiki-Pakistan project domain. It is a controversial topic so I've collected twenty 3rd party mainstream sources, on which the discussion is on-going currently at: [1]. I would like to build a consensus on the sources/content before edit the main page to avoid future disruptions, and your contribution of an opinion, as a very experienced editor within the project-scope, will be greatly appreciated. Edit notices
[edit]Hi! Please place Edit notices in their "Page notice" subpage and not directly in the text when creating redirects. For example use Template:Editnotices/Page/Captain Marvel (film). Thanks, Magioladitis (talk) 08:05, 5 September 2015 (UTC)
- @Magioladitis: I don't think if that's a better idea, because that way there will be so much templates like Template:Editnotices/Page/Bourne 5, Template:Editnotices/Page/The Smurfs (2017 film), etc. The thing is, we put edit notice for a short period of time, or just say sometimes for 2 days, and sometimes for over 6 months. The edit notice is to warn editors about something like if that article is already under working somewhere or anything. So, no offence but I'm completely disagree on this one. I would like to invite Mr. Frietjes (creator of Template:Film draft edit notice), Mr. Bgwhite (requester of the template after seeing me putting manual templates), and Mr. Favre1fan93 (I saw him first putting manual edit notices) to discuss on this one, if three of them vote in your opinion, I would agree then. Thanks for noticing and bringing this to me. --Captain Assassin! «T ♦ C ♦ G» 11:10, 5 September 2015 (UTC)
- I only requested a template as it would be easier to do than what you were currently doing. Your notices are not for a short time, for example you have Green Lantern (2020 film), Cyborg (2020 film) and Star Wars: Episode VIII. If the movie will start filming in a few months, that is one thing, but having one 4 years away is another. There are currently ~35 of these notices and a majority are films longer than 6 months. You should remove any long term notices.
- Note: Could you archive your talk page. It takes a bit to load as it is so big. You might want a bot to archive discussions after 3-4 weeks. Bgwhite (talk) 17:35, 5 September 2015 (UTC)

Please start creating the redirects first
[edit]Seriously, I'm seeing more and more these days that I'm just wasting my time filling in the redirect with content then reverting back only for it to be moved/deleted because there was a draft created. Rusted AutoParts 12:22, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
- @Rusted AutoParts: Yeah sure, I get your point. I'll make sure of creating a redirect before starting a draft. Thanks for that, and sorry if you are offended by me on moving draft to Untitled Bourne fifth film. --Captain Assassin! «T ♦ C ♦ G» 16:39, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
- I'm not offended, I'd just like to know if something's already been created before I go about creating an unneeded second redirect/article. Rusted AutoParts 16:52, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
- @Rusted AutoParts: Hmm, I got it, man. Thanks again. --Captain Assassin! «T ♦ C ♦ G» 16:57, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
- I'm not offended, I'd just like to know if something's already been created before I go about creating an unneeded second redirect/article. Rusted AutoParts 16:52, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
@Rusted AutoParts: Assassin, I'm also getting upset with all the edit notices added to redirects. Edits notices should not go on films that are 5 years out, such as Cyborg (2020 film) or Green Lantern (2020 film). These films may not even be produced. Now I'm getting reverted by people when I remove the notices on films that won't begin filming for atleast 6 months. You said these notices will only go on films that begin shooting within 6 months. Bgwhite (talk) 07:16, 11 September 2015 (UTC)
- No Bgwhite, I didn't say that the edit notice are only for films that begin shooting within six months, I meant "mostly." Most of the edit notices are in the films which are going into production very soon, but yes some are like 4-5 years away from it's release date, not production start. Maybe the studio start filming Cyborg (2020 film) or Green Lantern (2020 film) in 2017/18, and the other thing is that these much far films are only big studios and most anticipated films. --Captain Assassin! «T ♦ C ♦ G» 07:51, 11 September 2015 (UTC)
The thing is, we put edit notice for a short period of time, or just say sometimes for 2 days, and sometimes for over 6 months.
You never said mostly. The first time I brought this up, you said a few weeks to a few months. 4-5 years is not a short period of time. The vast majority of your edit notices are for films starting later than 6 months. There is no reason to have a draft article for a film that is 1 to 5 years away of being filmed, if it even gets filmed. It appears you are only doing this to have credit for creating the article. Filming is usually 12-15 months before release, not two years. Ant Man took over 10 years from when it was announced to when it came out. Guardians of the Galaxy (film) was 6 years. You now have 50 of these links. You are also covering all your bases with links like Black Panther (film) and Black Panther (2017 film). You have links that are bad like Independence Day Forever. This has to stop. I'm the second person to ask you this. Bgwhite (talk) 08:24, 11 September 2015 (UTC)- Okay, just let me understand this clearly. You are now asking me to stop putting edit notices on every redirect, or to stop putting notices which are like years away? --Captain Assassin! «T ♦ C ♦ G» 08:41, 11 September 2015 (UTC)
- I understand the reason for the edit notice. I understand that when filming approaches, people who don't know the rules will want to create an article. Doing a draft article with an edit notice is a great way for people to contribute. It's a win-win scenario for everybody. I have no problem with the edit notice/draft creation when filming is ~six months or less.
- The problem is when films are still years away from being filmed, if they do get filmed at all. Any draft created will be constantly changed. It will become a gossip article of who's attached to the movie now. There is no reason for this.
- I think, if filming is less than six months away, then the edit notice and draft is ok. If filming is more than eight months away, don't do one. The six-eight month period is a grey area. Maybe do an edit notice if the article has been created, with the article becoming the draft????
- @Bgwhite: What you are saying is a little bit impossible for now, if you want me to stop working on drafts which are not around six months of its filming then you need to discuss this somewhere. Because there are a lot of users doing this right now, examples are Draft:Thor: Ragnarok, Draft:Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1, Draft:Black Panther (film), Draft:Captain Marvel (film), Draft:Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2, and Draft:Inhumans (film), and there might me more like these which 4-5 years away. I don't think that a draft is a bad idea, it helps everyone to contribute while studios announce something or news spread some rumors about it. Drafts help cover everything along with the announcements, it becomes easy to cover every news and taking the article to GA status right after the film releases. --Captain Assassin! «T ♦ C ♦ G» 01:50, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
- Okay, just let me understand this clearly. You are now asking me to stop putting edit notices on every redirect, or to stop putting notices which are like years away? --Captain Assassin! «T ♦ C ♦ G» 08:41, 11 September 2015 (UTC)

[edit]Casting sections
[edit]I've noticed a lot of your production sections prominently feature news relating to casting. I'm not opposed to these per say, but in some articles it seems like overkill. A good casting section I would say would be something like Toy Story or Monsters Inc. where the main characters in the cast are described but not every part is listed. It seems like I often have to come into a lot of articles and trim it down. --Deathawk (talk) 03:10, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

VisualEditor update
[edit]- This note is only delivered to English Wikipedia subscribers of the visual editor's newsletter.
The location of the visual editor's preference has been changed from the "Beta" tab to the "Editing" section of your preferences on this wiki. The setting now says Temporarily disable the visual editor while it is in beta. This aligns en.wiki with almost all the other WMF wikis; it doesn’t mean the visual editor is complete, or that it is no longer “in beta phase” though.
This action has not changed anything else for editors: it still honours editors’ previous choices about having it on or off; logged-out users continue to only have access to wikitext; the “Edit” tab is still after the “Edit source” one. You can learn more at the visual editor’s talk page.
We don’t expect this to cause any glitches, but in case your account no longer has the settings that you want, please accept our apologies and correct it in the Editing tab of Special:Preferences. Thank you for your attention, Elitre (WMF) -16:32, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

VisualEditor News #5—2015
[edit]Read this in another language • Subscription list for this multilingual newsletter
Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has fixed many bugs, added new features, and made some small design changes. They post weekly status reports on mediawiki.org. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are improving support for languages like Japanese and Arabic, making it easier to edit on mobile devices, and providing rich-media tools for formulæ, charts, galleries and uploading.
Recent improvements
[edit]Educational features: The first time you use the visual editor, it now draws your attention to the Link and ⧼visualeditor-toolbar-cite-label⧽ tools. When you click on the tools, it explains why you should use them. (T108620) Alongside this, the welcome message for new users has been simplified to make editing more welcoming. (T112354) More in-software educational features are planned.
Links: It is now easier to understand when you are adding text to a link and when you are typing plain text next to it. (T74108, T91285) The editor now fully supports ISBN, PMID or RFC numbers. (T109498, T110347, T63558) These "magic links" use a custom link editing tool.
Uploads: Registered editors can now upload images and other media to Commons while editing. Click the new tab in the "Insert Images and media" tool. You will be guided through the process without having to leave your edit. At the end, the image will be inserted. This tool is limited to one file at a time, owned by the user, and licensed under Commons's standard license. For more complex situations, the tool links to more advanced upload tools. You can also drag the image into the editor. This will be available in the wikitext editor later.
Mobile: Previously, the visual editor was available on the mobile Wikipedia site only on tablets. Now, editors can use the visual editor on any size of device. (T85630) Edit conflicts were previously broken on the mobile website. Edit conflicts can now be resolved in both wikitext and visual editors. (T111894) Sometimes templates and similar items could not be deleted on the mobile website. Selecting them caused the on-screen keyboard to hide with some browsers. Now there is a new "Delete" button, so that these things can be removed if the keyboard hides. (T62110) You can also edit table cells in mobile now.
Rich editing tools: You can now add and edit sheet music in the visual editor. (T112925) There are separate tabs for advanced options, such as MIDI and Ogg audio files. (T114227 and T113354) When editing formulæ and other blocks, errors are shown as you edit. It is also possible to edit some types of graphs; adding new ones, and support for new types, will be coming.
On the English Wikipedia, the visual editor is now automatically available to anyone who creates an account. The preference switch was moved to the normal location, under Special:Preferences.
Future changes
[edit]You will soon be able to switch from the wikitext to the visual editor after you start editing. (T49779) Previously, you could only switch from the visual editor to the wikitext editor. Bi-directional switching will make possible a single edit tab. (T102398) This project will combine the "Edit" and "Edit source" tabs into a single "Edit" tab, similar to the system already used on the mobile website. The "Edit" tab will open whichever editing environment you used last time.
Let's work together
[edit]- Share your ideas and ask questions at mw:VisualEditor/Feedback. This feedback page uses Flow for discussions.

Proposed deletion of The Tracking Board
[edit]The article The Tracking Board has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Has no visible verifiable references from reliable sources that substantiate the content, other than a self-published source.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. — Jeff G. ツ (talk) 06:12, 7 November 2015 (UTC)

This year's results were an exact replica of last year's competition. For the second year in a row, the 2015 WikiCup champion is Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points). Bot automation at Wikipedia:Today's articles for improvement
[edit]Greetings WikiProject TAFI members!
Over the past two weeks, there has been extensive discussion on introducing bot automation to assist with maintenance of the Today's Articles for Improvement project. A bot has now been approved for trial and will carry out the weekly duties. The bots first run will occur around 00:00, 22 November 2015 (UTC) (midnight on Sunday).
If you have been assisting any of the weekly maintenance tasks, please refrain from doing so this week. The bot needs to be tested and proven it can do the job, and it only gets one chance per week. The tasks will include:
- Adding the new scheduled article to Wikipedia talk:Today's articles for improvement and removing the entry from Wikipedia:Articles for improvement
- Set up the schedule pages for the new TAFI, except the adding of an image and caption
- Adding {{TAFI}} to the new article for improvement, remove {{TAFI}} from last week's article and add {{Former TAFI}} to the talk page
- Notify relevant WikiProjects that the new TAFI is within their scope
- Send a mass message to everyone on the notification list of the new TAFI selection
Updating the accomplishments and archiving selections is still done manually, along with daily tasks such as adding approved entries to the articles for improvement page. These will become automated in the near future.
We hope the bot proves to serve well, and by carrying out the routine housekeeping tasks we can boost the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the project. MusikBot thanks you for your service in helping with the weekly tasks in the past, and for your cooperation during this trial period :)

Speedy deletion nomination of Draft:Ice Age: Collision Course
[edit]A tag has been placed on Draft:Ice Age: Collision Course requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section R2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect from the article namespace to a different namespace except the Category, Template, Wikipedia, Help, or Portal namespaces.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. WikiCup 2016 is just around the corner...
[edit]Hello everyone, and we would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2016 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. There are some changes we'd like to announce before the competition begins.
After two years of serving as WikiCup judge, User:Miyagawa has stepped down as judge. He deserves great thanks and recognition for his dedication and hard work, and for providing necessary transition for a new group of judges in last year's Cup. Joining Christine (User:Figureskatingfan) and Jason (User:Sturmvogel 66) is Andrew (User:Godot13), a very successful WikiCup competitor and expert in Featured Pictures; he won the two previous competitions. This is a strong judging team, and we anticipate lots of enjoyment and good work coming from our 2016 competitors.
We would also like to announce one change in how this year's WikiCup will be run. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Godot13 and Cwmhiraeth have chosen to limit their participation. See here for the announcement and a complete explanation of why. They and the judges feel that it will make for a more exciting, enjoyable, and productive competition.
The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. The judges are committed to not repeating the confusion that occurred last year and to ensuring that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.
If you have any questions or concerns, the judges can be reached on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, on their talk pages, or by email. We hope you will all join us in trying to make the 2015 WikiCup the most productive and enjoyable yet. You are receiving this message because you are listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. VisualEditor News #6—2015
[edit]Read this in another language • Subscription list
Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has fixed many bugs and expanded the mathematics formula tool. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are improving support for languages such as Japanese and Arabic, and providing rich-media tools for formulæ, charts, galleries and uploading.
Recent improvements
[edit]You can switch from the wikitext editor to the visual editor after you start editing.
The LaTeX mathematics formula editor has been significantly expanded. (T118616) You can see the formula as you change the LaTeX code. You can click buttons to insert the correct LaTeX code for many symbols.
Future changes
[edit]The single edit tab project will combine the "Edit" and "Edit source" tabs into a single "Edit" tab, like the system already used on the mobile website. (T102398) Initially, the "Edit" tab will open whichever editing environment you used last time. Your last editing choice will be stored as a cookie for logged-out users and as an account preference for logged-in editors. Logged-in editors will be able to set a default editor in the Editing tab of Special:Preferences in the drop-down menu about "Editing mode:".
The visual editor will be offered to all editors at the following Wikipedias in early 2016: Amharic, Buginese, Min Dong, Cree, Manx, Hakka, Armenian, Georgian, Pontic, Serbo-Croatian, Tigrinya, Mingrelian, Zhuang, and Min Nan. (T116523) Please post your comments and the language(s) that you tested at the feedback thread on mediawiki.org. The developers would like to know how well it works. Please tell them what kind of computer, web browser, and keyboard you are using.
In 2016, the feedback pages for the visual editor on many Wikipedias will be redirected to mediawiki.org. (T92661)
Testing opportunities
[edit]- Please try the new system for the single edit tab on test2.wiki.x.io. You can edit while logged out to see how it works for logged-out editors, or you can create a separate account to be able to set your account's preferences. Please share your thoughts about the single edit tab system at the feedback topic on mediawiki.org or sign up for formal user research (type "single edit tab" in the question about other areas you're interested in). The new system has not been finalized, and your feedback can affect the outcome. The team particularly wants your thoughts about the options in Special:Preferences. The current choices in Special:Preferences are:
- Remember my last editor,
- Always give me the visual editor if possible,
- Always give me the source editor, and
- Show me both editor tabs. (This is the current state for people using the visual editor. None of these options will be visible if you have disabled the visual editor in your preferences at that wiki.)
- Can you read and type in Korean or Japanese? Language engineer David Chan needs people who know which tools people use to type in some languages. If you speak Japanese or Korean, you can help him test support for these languages. Please see the instructions at mw:VisualEditor/IME Testing#What to test if you can help, and report it on Phabricator (Korean - Japanese) or on Wikipedia (Korean - Japanese).
If you aren't reading this in your favorite language, then please help us with translations! Subscribe to the Translators mailing list or contact us directly, so that we can notify you when the next issue is ready. Thank you!
