Your edits to the Majorana fermion article

[edit]

Hi,

I have several suggestions about the way you refer to the recent Science paper by Yadzani group about Majorana fermions.

First of all, I strongly suggest to remove the mention of these from the introduction paragraph. The reason for this is the persistent confusion between Majorana bound states/Majorana zero modes and actual Majorana fermions, and is explained here Majorana fermion#Majorana_bound_states. This subtlety is something that should be kept extremely clear, and was also actively discussed on the talk page. This also means that Majorana fermion#Detection should rather become a sub-subsection in Majorana fermion#Majorana_bound_states, rather than a subsection of its own.

Further, there is a point about which I am somewhat less certain. While the title of the Stanford paper is somewhat bolder than that of the Delft paper discussed earlier, the data quality is not dramatically different, so I don't think that putting that much emphasis on one, as opposed to the other is appropriate.

Anton.akhmerov (talk) 13:41, 3 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Although the full access to the Science article seems to be restricted, from what I've read in other reliable sources, what was observed is exactly Majorana fermion. From Phys.org: "Using a two-story-tall microscope floating in an ultralow-vibration lab at Princeton's Jadwin Hall, the scientists captured a glowing image of a particle known as a "Majorana fermion" perched at the end of an atomically thin wire—just where it had been predicted to be after decades of study and calculation dating back to the 1930s". From Scientific American: "The new Majorana particle showed up inside a superconductor". But I don't object some slight rewording/copyedit. Brandmeistertalk 13:58, 3 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of ZapSpot

[edit]

The article ZapSpot has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails WP:GNG and #1 of WP:VGSCOPE.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. David Newstone

[edit]

I was not given the chance to add the reffernece list!

For notable publications by the artist first see, Suite: The Humber Bridge - can be found whaen typed into bing He is listed as David J Newstone, on that record, . As i stated i did not get the chance to list all other records, for example, Old Faithful, come on you 'ull etc.

it seems no effort was put into the internet search before the banner went up! I am willing to continue building this page, but am not going to put any more work into a page that will be deleated once compleated. I will add one more refference (a DVD) and will continue with this page if it is not deleated.

The page is on a musician local to Yorkshire and the humber, who has had hits with songs, like old faithful. He is well known in the hull area. And has worked with notable stars. After an interview with this indervidual i decided to add him to wiki as i could not find him listed. I know he may not be known to people outside of yorkshire but this does not mean that he is not woth listing. While i am starting the page there are others who wish to maintain it. Please state why you feel this person is not worth listing as many others he has worked with are on wiki.Balyputalk — Preceding undated comment added 21:45, 25 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Historical trivia trail

[edit]

Re Stitching the Standard, described on Signpost as an "Austro-Hungarian military flag," I wasn't able to find a posting for such a flag so described here or online. As mentioned here, it looks like the old HRE flag to me. Just wondering. (Big issue, I know. Ha.) Sca (talk) 14:02, 17 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I also wonder where that info comes from. At best this may be the medieval Holy Roman Empire flag, if Leighton wanted historical accuracy. Brandmeistertalk 14:07, 17 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Right. (HRE = Holy Roman Empire.) Someone at Signpost must have been guessing. Sca (talk) 14:31, 17 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No crown, either there or at FOTW here, so it's not an HRE one. Blair Leighton's design is pretty deformed, could be a Rorschach blot, but there does seem to be the silhouette of a crown in between the two black necks. Austrian flag is here. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 18:09, 17 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting background info, thanks. As far as I can see, the upshot is that Leighton's painting may be somewhat inaccurate with respect to the HRE flag. And the flag in the painting doesn't appear to be one used in more recent times by Austria-Hungary. Sca (talk) 20:32, 17 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Just realised I've been looking at the damn thing upside down! Two legs spread wide, with the rump of a tail in-between. Another possibility is Teutonic knights- some illustrations show a black eagle on gold. Whatever it is, probably the painting couldn't be put on public display after August 1914. "Claimed moons of Earth"

[edit]

Appreciate the sentiment, but the new wording makes it seem like the real Moon is "claimed" too. There really is no need to do this; after all Planets beyond Neptune has been going fine for years. Making this kind of distinction is a bit like starting an article on "fictional fairies" or "crazy apocalypse theories". Serendipodous 10:37, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Personally I don't feel that it implies the real Moon is "claimed" too. An average reader rather knows that the Moon is the only Earth's satellite, so when (s)he sees Claimed moons of Earth, (s)he would not be confused per WP:PRECISION. "Other moons" implies that the Earth has more than one moon, which is indeed confusing, I think. Brandmeistertalk 11:04, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Italic titles

[edit]

Hi Brandmeister. I'm assuming edits like this were suppose to prevent the infobox title using italics, and present the text in normal style? Because the parameter doesn't seem to have worked and all the titles are still showing in italics. Is it possible this is a glitch in the parameter? Wes Mouse | T@lk 17:22, 24 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I don't want to start a dispute, and am keeping it of the ref desk, but North Africa is usually contrasted with Sub-Saharan Africa, which also includes South Africa, as well as tropical Africa. I would consider changing the blurb in the Roman climate article to reflect that, given that animals such as the lion are not limited to just tropical Africa. I don't think we can reasonably consider this as even a competent levels adjustment. We cannot promote this as the best of our work. Adam Cuerden (talk) 17:46, 8 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ice hockey (film)

[edit]

Hello, I found your name at Wikipedia:Translators available#Russian-to-English. There is a film article, Ice hockey (film), that is up for AfD as seen here: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ice hockey (film). Would you be able to review the sources and links to see if this film is notable in Russian-language sources? Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks, Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 14:53, 7 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Article upgrade assistance request (Pre-translation stage)

[edit]

Seasons Greetings,

This is in reference to a relatively new umbrella article on en-wikipedia named Ceremonial pole. Ceremonial pole is a human tradition since ancient times; either existed in past at some point of time, or still exists in some cultures across global continents from north to south & from east to west. Ceremonial poles are used to symbolize a variety of concepts in several different world cultures.

Through article Ceremonial pole we intend to take encyclopedic note of cultural aspects and festive celebrations around Ceremonial pole as an umbrella article and want to have historical, mythological, anthropological aspects, reverence or worships wherever concerned as a small part.

While Ceremonial poles have a long past and strong presence but usually less discussed subject. Even before we seek translation of this article in global languages, we need to have more encyclopedic information/input about Ceremonial poles from all global cultures and languages. And we seek your assistance in the same.

Since other contributors to the article are insisting for reliable sources and Standard native english; If your contributions get deleted (for some reason like linguistics or may be your information is reliable but unfortunately dosent match expectations of other editors) , please do list the same on Talk:Ceremonial pole page so that other wikipedians may help improve by interlanguage collaborations, and/or some other language wikipedias may be interested in giving more importance to reliablity of information over other factors on their respective wikipedia.

This particular request is being made to you since your user name is listed in Wikipedia:Translators available list.

Thanking you with warm regards Mahitgar (talk) 06:01, 24 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia edit 2015 year in review captions

[edit]

Hello, my name is Andrew Sherman, I am a Digital Communications Intern on the Communications team at the Wikimedia Foundation. We just released our year in review video #Edit2015. We asked for the video captions to be translated and already received French, Dutch, Polish, Indonesian, Catalan, Chinese (traditional), Spanish, Vietnamese, Italian, and Romanian. Would you be able to help and provide a Russian translation?

Here is the link to the video on commons, a link to the english captions, and a link to create the Russian captions.

We really appreciate you taking the time to read this message and consider helping with #Edit2015's captions.

I really appreciate it thank you! It seems that my other efforts over the translator mailing list succeeded and someone sent me the Russian captions last night. If you would still like to help please go to the Russian Captions on commons. Again, thank you for the consideration! Take care.ASherman (WMF) (talk) 18:31, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What's especially nice about the digitized version is that it doesn't need water,

Canada in Khaki

[edit]

Thanks for nominating that. I really needed a fairly simple cleanup job to get back into restoration with, after a few months eyeing a restoration that would not finish. =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 17:03, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah. And it turned out that Canada in Khaki has several other gems, like this one (although I found only two in high res). Brandmeistertalk 19:59, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Reckon both high-res ones will pass, anyway. Don't suppose you know any good ANZAC stuff? I found http://collections.tepapa.govt.nz/Object/780935/download but am wondering if that's the best example. Adam Cuerden (talk) 21:47, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Don't know ANZAC stuff well, but in recent days browsed across some WWII posters, like "We want your kitchen waste". Also, there is catchy psychological propaganda stuff, including "Happy days... gone", but so far only low resolution. Brandmeistertalk 11:52, 29 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Some possibilities:

+ Army Week (" ")
