Philippines
Yup, very good that looks good.. I'd ignore that problem you mentioned. Oh no need for a pin map for province, the location maps should identify where in the Philippines it is.. Himalayan 11:20, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
When you come to do the Philippines, I think probably the best thing would be to overide the current infoboxes and copy from German wikipedia like here. Compare it to Aloguinsan which has a short city infobox and zilch info. So all of the municipalities of the Philippines will need standardising probably copying from German wiki is the best way to fill them out. So what's the plan then? Finish Italy. Standardise Spanish municipalities and then Philippines? Himalayan 14:30, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
Non-free USStateGov template
Can you edit the Non-free USStateGov template so that Georgia links to Georgia (U.S. state)? I don't know how to do this. Thank you. Khatru2 (talk) 17:59, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

Hey There Plastikspork
Hey...I see you did an edit on Isis King. I am a blogger and I'm new to wikipedia. I wanted to edit the new information on Isis King. She is no longer engaged to Desmond Payne and she is now dating legendary club disc jockey/producer, DJ Lucky. I want to do a page on DJ Lucky, I found a lot of interesting things about him aside from being familiar with him anyway. HX Magazine did an article on King and DJ Lucky; however, a friend told me that King and DJ Lucky had their lawyer get the article removed from the website. Let me know if you can help in anyway. I have a lot of other notable people I would like to make pages on.
Thank you, Su —Preceding unsigned comment added by SChang05 (talk • contribs) 02:21, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the new infobox on Manocalzati. It's spiffy. I really appreciate all your work. Clerks. (talk) 13:39, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
- I'm glad you like it. Uniform formatting of the 8000+ comune articles has been quite a project. There are only about 350 more to go and I can move on to working on the frazione articles, and then it's on to Spain. Luckily, most of the edits are by semi-automated scripts. Template merge completed
Hi. Thanks for the suggestion of merging {{idwc}} and {{idw-commons}} into {{fdw-iw}} (aka {{fdw-commons}}). I know that the discussion results were "no consensus", but it was a pretty logical and straight-forward issue. By making sure that the new template is backwards compatible to the old ones, hopefully there won't be any issues. I have completed the merge by adding some additional wording and attributes to {{fdw-iw}}. —Willscrlt ( “Talk” ) 11:47, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
- Sounds good. My problem was that people propose these mergers, but then no one is willing to make the effort to actually merge the templates. As a general rule, I don't think a TFD is necessary for merging. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 17:42, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah. I can understand why people don't want to mess around (mess up) a complex template with parser functions and stuff. Even if you are knowledgeable about all of that, it still takes time to become familiar enough with such a template that you feel comfortable in making changes. The funny thing is that those same people don't bother to notify the primary templaters who developed or maintain it. They throw it up for discussion and assume somehow that the people involved will be watching the TFDs and chime in. Silly assumption. :-) —Willscrlt ( “Talk” ) 21:35, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

OtherusesAlias
PlastikSpork,
The OtherusesAlias template was deleted, and the consensus was definitely delete, although reached by a small list of contributors. If I hadn't been distracted by a new baby last week, I might have presented my view better. If you look at Token-object reading, you'll see a perfect example of why existing templates don't work well. The current hatnote, which was manually added to replace the OtherusesAlias hatnote, is very confusing. You can't understand the hatnote without reading teh article, because the hatnote is about an old name for the article. It is possible to create a one-off hatnote (non-template) for this, or to use a lot of override verbiage with a different template, but that goes against the very spirit of templates: to make repeated copy simpler AND consistent.
I'd like too re-open this for review. Simply stated, OtherusesAlias is an ideal template for an "alias" to article where there is disambiguation needed for the alias, which is often the case for renamed pages. Other hatnote templates lack the standard text to make the hatnote clear and unconfusing. Dovid (talk) 10:26, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
- You can always use {{dablink}} if you find the wording confusing for a particular case. If you think this type of template is needed for a larger number of articles, then I would suppose there should be some broader discussion to gain consensus for this type of hatnote. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 17:40, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
- True, one can use dablink for anything, and one can even use no template at all. What's the goal? Dovid (talk) 18:58, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
- I believe the goal is outlined quite nicely in WP:DABLINK and WP:NAMB. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 19:37, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
Usefull
Do you think this edit did anything? Debresser (talk) 22:06, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
- Upon closer inspection, probably not. The intention was to make sure that category only transcluded in the template namespace. However, it looks like all that I did was move it to the other side of the Ombox. I will revert the edit if you like it the other way better. The corresponding change to tfd-inline does appear to have done something. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 23:04, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, the second edit did do something. The first edit didn't make a difference, but since we usually have the catergory at the end, I think you made the right decision. Debresser (talk) 13:10, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

What do we do about American places? The infoboxes are fine but most of them only have crappy county locators. Most people are clueless as to where in the states they are. I would suggest that state pushpin maps are added to all the places in the United States. Please can you respond this time as it is starting to concern me as to why you are not responding to me. Busy? Himalayan 22:43, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

I thought so. Abanto y Ciérbana-Abanto Zierbena is not looking too good compared to this!! Spain probably needs the biggest cleanup although you may wish to finish the smaller adaptions first. WOuld you be OK if I added any task I find to you list? I won't go looking for them as there is plenty to do, but that would be easiest, save troubling you? Himalayan 23:03, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

Template:CSRT-Yes
{{CSRT-Yes}} has been the subject of a lot of debate, since it was agreed upon by groups like Wikiproject:Terrorism and Wikiproject:Templates as the only "manageable" way to handle Guantanamo BLPs - since otherwise there was a need to have hundreds of biographies each incorporating identical text...but one of them would say "Bush's unfair tribunal system", the other one would say "the terrorist was placed before a tribunal", etc. The unorthodox use of the template allowed orthodoxy and NPOV to be ensured across hundreds of BLPs. The template was proposed for deletion in June 2009, but Kept as a necessary tool. (Wikipedia:Templates_for_deletion/Log/2009_June_2#Template:CSRT-Yes) The following month, a sister template was proposed for deletion and all parties agreed it should be merged into CSRT-Yes (including myself). (Wikipedia:Templates_for_deletion/Log/2009_June_27#Template:ReadingCSRTNotice ). However, eight weeks later the CSRT-Yes template was again nominated for deletion, apparently on the basis of the editor finding it "messy" and disliking the images in the template. The images were removed per consensus, but you nevertheless closed the debate as a Substitute and Delete. (Wikipedia:Templates_for_deletion/Log/2009_September_4#Template:CSRT-Yes). Now AFDs are typically difficult because a "Keep" will just be met by a steady stream of attempts until finally one succeeds (see, for example, the great fun had with Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Daniel Brandt (14th nomination)), whereas a successful closure as "Delete" is rarely able to appeal and have the article restored.
Anyways, more than two months after you closed the CSRT-Yes's second nomination as "Substitute and Delete", there has been zero attempt by editors to work on deciding the best wording for a substitution, and any attempts to fix BLP articles with POV templates (such as Akhtiar Mohamad, tagged as POV bias since December 2007, a serious breach to allow a BLP to sit with that for two years) are being undone and the POV concerns edited back INTO the article "because CSRT-Yes should be deleted", rather than used to fix the BLP concerns across so many Guantanamo BLPs. (And those POV concerns were raised ages before I strayed onto the battlescene, so no, nothing to do with me on either side) Rather than improving the project, the issue is stagnating attempts to fix BLP articles.
I am not sure you can retroactively change your decision on the TfD, but I would be interested in hearing whether you still believe that deletion is the best route - and how things might be set in motion to focus on helping with hundreds of BLP concerns that have existed for years - where attempts to fix the concerns are met with rigid and stoic "This is not how WP does things" rules, in sad mockery of official policy WP:IAR which seems to be a textbook case in these Guantanamo BLPs. (Cross-posted to those three administrators involved, no bias towards any of them, I assume good faith decisions have just led us to this unfortunate dead end) Sherurcij (speaker for the dead) 16:16, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
- As I am sure you noticed, I added a disclaimer that the substitution and deletion was to occur only after consensus had been reached regarding the precise wording. If consensus cannot be reached, then the template cannot be substituted (and deleted). If you would like to have the decision changed to "keep" since no consensus can be reached, then please feel free to start a thread at WP:DRV. I can see both sides of the argument (for and against deletion), and it won't bother me if my decision is overturned. Thank you for contacting me first, and let me know if this sounds like an acceptable resolution. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 16:22, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you, I left messages with the other two closing admins as well; if consensus seems to be that DRV is the proper avenue, I'll take the issue there. Thanks for your time. Sherurcij (speaker for the dead) 16:24, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

Aaron Bailey>Behle?
Hey, PS. Do you know if there are sources that establish Aaron's name one way or the other? My memory isn't perfect, but I think his surname was only placed in there as "Bailey" by me because it was my best guess. That anonymous IP's edit may be unsourced, but then again, so is our spelling. It's possible that it's Bailey/Behle himself, or an acquaintance of his correcting it. I'm going to trying asking on the IP's Talk Page, but in the meantime, do you know the spelling one way or the other? Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 01:10, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Ruins
Can I ask for your help again? I was just wondering if adding another chart called to this article would be acceptable. Perhaps we could take off the current "Elimination chart"? It seems a little redundant to have the challenge name, ruin name etc., on this chart, since that's under the corresponding episode summary. The new chart would be separated by gender, since that's how the contestants are eliminated. Let me give you a preview...
Elimination chart
|
|
- Teams
- The contestant is on the Challengers team.
- The contestant is on the Champions team.
- Competition
- The contestant won the final challenge.
- The contestant won a challenge, and was not a nominee for the Ruins.
- The contestant won a challenge, and was a nominee for the Ruins.
- The contestant did not win the challenge, but was not a nominee for the Ruins.
- The contestant did not win the challenge, and was a nominee for the Ruins.
- The contestant won the challenge, was put into the Ruins, and won.
- The contestant did not win the challenge, was put into the the Ruins, and won.
- The contestant won the challenge, but lost the Ruins and was eliminated.
- The contestant lost the challenge, was put into the Ruins, and was eliminated.
- The contestant was disqualified from the challenge.
The Females' chart would be the same as well. Feel free to make any color changes etc. to the chart and let me know what you think. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikiguy09 (talk • contribs)
- I can see your point about the redundancy, given that much of the information is in the episode summaries as well. However, there is also a case for not using so much color. There are many users of Wikipedia who are colorblind, or partially colorblind, and have a hard time reading these tables. If you are really interested in making a significant change to the article, you should definitely propose it on the talk page. After all, I am only one of many editors who have been working on the page. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 04:22, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
- Alright I posted it. I was thinking about possibly taking off the winning team and making an extra column at the top to show what team one instead of adding in all that extra color. That would make the color sceme something like this:
- Teams
- The contestant is on the Challengers team.
- The contestant is on the Champions team.
- Competition
- The contestant won the final challenge. WINNER
- The contestant was safe from the Ruins. SAFE
- The contestant was nominated for the Ruins, but was safe. SAFE
- The contestant was put into the Ruins and won. RUIN
- The contestant was put into the Ruins and lost. OUT
- The contestant was disqualified from the challenge. OUT
(The bold words would be what would be in the columns.) An example of the kind of extra row I was thinking about is on America's Most Smartest Model. Where it says "Edge Challenge Winner" or something like that, that's where we could put "Challenge Winner", and then put Champions or Challengers. Any thoughts? Italian comune templates
Can you remove the left side coat of arms from Template:Province of Salerno. You'll have to remove it from the locked template which is used for all. Doesn't need COA on left anyway... Himalayan 21:41, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Nice one. You taking a break from geo articles at the mo? You a big fan of the Survivor series? - I have been on travel for about 20 days over the past month, so I haven't had much of a chance to work on the "to do" list. However, I am now back home, so I should be able to start working again. Some of the conversions will go better if I get your input first, before doing the mass substitution. Yes, I am a "closeted fan" of reality television. I have somewhere around 1500 reality television related articles on my watchlist at the moment. Survivor is now up to season 19 or 20, (see Survivor 20). This particular season, Survivor: Samoa, is turning out to be one of the better ones. They did a good job with casting. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 14:51, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
Skeemface Mafia
Just wondering why you deleted the Skeemface Mafia page. People have been asking what this band is all about I figured this might let them know. Anyways I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks in advance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Brains75 (talk • contribs) 01:25, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you for contacting me. The page was deleted per WP:CSD A7, which means that the content did not establish notability of the band. This is not to say that the band is necessarily not notable, but notability was not established in the article. I can move the article to your userspace, if you would like to work on it some more, and perhaps build it up with some reliable secondary sources. However, you would have to show some indication that this is a band signed to a major record label, and/or have some references in newspapers or some other secondary source. Let me know if I can answer any more questions. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 04:50, 26 November 2009 (UTC)

When it survived the AfD, User: Mbinebri convinced her that the page was supposed to be locked forever , and that i used trickery to get her to unlock it. When I tried to explain that it was Manbiiri that was using tricker not me, I got no response. Obviously there are people who are so stuck in the past that they can't see that peoples notability changes, would you be willing to intervene and get the page unlocked? ... Misty Willows talk 04:43, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, I would be happy to help if possible. I would guess the first thing to do would be to get something started either at WP:AFC or in userspace. You could get Hunter to help build a fairly strong article. Once there is sufficient weight, it could be moved back into article space, and I could help by unlocking the article. I will have a look in the deleted revision history to see if there is anything that can be salvaged to get things started. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 05:03, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

Computing percentages
Hey, do you help make and edit the Biggest Loser weight percentage leaderboard in the discussion section of the Biggest Loser Season 8 article? If so, is this how you find % of weight lost- Example-Danny has lost 201 pounds, so 201 pounds is X percent of 430. IS/Of X/100% 201*100 Then, the result of that divided by 430. I tried that earlier today, and I checked my work, and I did it right. LOL. So, I could probably help you guys out. LOL. YouTubeaholic2009 (talk) 21:22, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
- In almost all cases, the percentages in the table are computing with respect to the last weigh-in. So, if Danny originally weighed 430 pounds, but weighed 250 pounds at the last weigh-in, then we would use the 250 as the reference. However, at the finale, the weight at the start of the season will be used. Note that, all of these percentages are actually reported on the show, so we aren't technically computing anything (although it's fairly straightforward to do so). So, you are correct that if the reference weight is 430, you would take 100*201/430. There are some more complicated cases, like when the contestant gained weight, and the subtract the gained weight before determining the reference value. Speedy deletion candidate
Found another bogus page Anthony Bouzi. Another question, what is the proper way to rename an article.thxMarty Rockatansky (talk) 07:22, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
- The best way to rename an article is to just "move it" to the new name. This keeps the page history intact (see WP:MOVE). If it won't let you move it, due to the existence of the target page, then an admin can help resolve the problem. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 14:57, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
Templates for deletion
You recently closed this discussion about templates for deletion with "no consensus to delete". I'm surprised about that and just wanted to check if you read the discussion. Even though the number of people voting for keeping the template was higher, none of them gave any reason to do so. Does consensus decide whether they're deleted regardless of guidelines? I thought the moment an admin. or experienced user looked at the points I'd made they'd see that those templates don't need to exist so would promptly delete them. But they're back on all the articles they were previously removed from, thus lessening their quality. I can't find the guideline that says so, but there's one which attempts to stop the overabundance of templates linking pages together needlessly. That guideline directly relates to this discussion and I'd like to quote it when I reopen the case to have them finally removed. Do you know the one I mean? And do you have an opinion on those templates' existence? I'm really curious to know why they've been kept.--Jeff79 (talk) 12:13, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
- You are correct that it is not a vote. I believe the implied reasoning for keeping a navigation template is that someone thinks it's useful for navigation. As you pointed out, in many cases this is often excessive navigation due to the large amount of duplication. I actually think that this issue goes far beyond these particular templates. I have seen a myriad of such cases nominated at WP:TFD, some were kept and some were deleted. If you look at the bottom of Derek Jeter, you will see multiple levels of collapsed boxes. Perhaps it would be a good idea to continue discussion at WP:RL, or to start a broader WP:RFC about the utility of these templates. As far as policy goes, there is something about WP:COLLAPSE, WP:OVERLINK, and Wikipedia:Navigation templates, but much of this are based on essays. Other than that, I don't know of any particular policy about championship team navigation templates. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:12, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
Spain
Grrr its really stressing me out even looking at the spanish municipal articles. I'd begin on them manually but I feel it is best done with automation/semi-automation. Even the ones which have infobox settlement are just in a total mess with parameters boundaries on the wrong side etc and just all jumbled up. Its gonna require a serious effort to sort them out, I really hope that some time you'll be up to the task... They really do practically all need a makeover... Himalayan 21:07, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
I'd recommend that we create the Spanish infobox first and just copy all of the infoboxes from spanish wiki like here and just overide the existing ones with a copied consistent template. Then at a later date they can be converted to infobox settlement but I'd say creating a wrapper template is of key to the task and to just copy everything from spanish wiki consistently... Ah of course you created Template:Infobox Spanish municipality, its just a case now of tranferring it as efficiently as possible.. The biggest problem is the maps this part of the spanish infoboxes,
| imagen = {{Mapa de localización |España |label=Pedro Abad |position=right |lat_deg=37 | lat_min=58 | lat_seg=0 |lon_deg=-4 | lon_min=-27 |lon_seg=0 |float=none |caption= |width=300 }}<br />[[Archivo:Pedro-Abad-mapa.png|200px]]
It doesn't automatically transfer showing the map and national locator as it should like Nerha, If you find a way for it to do so, so they can be directly copied withuot alterations I can begin transferring them manually... Himalayan 21:11, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
- What I would do normally is take a category of articles, generate a list, pull the interwikis, extract the raw infoboxen from the es database and up-load them. Then translate using AWB. Rich Farmbrough, 21:48, 30 November 2009 (UTC).
- My PerlWikipedia script finds the twin-article name by parsing the interwiki links, opens up that page, grabs the infobox, pastes it into the English language page, then runs a sequence of regexp commands. So, basically it does it all in one step. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 21:50, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
Cheers for converting those Thai infoboxes. I've replaced with svgs and am beautifying with image like Satun Province, looks much better quality. Shame about the referencing and general content of the articles though...
Looks good. Himalayan 12:02, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
Yeah I don't want to pile up the work too much but if I do come across one needing conversion on my travels I'll add it. Glad you've started on Spain, hope you can find a way to do it quicker and more efficiently. The articles are a mess. Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:10, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, can you quickly add File:Legenda rezerwat scisly.svg at 12px instead of a red pin, green seems more suited to nature! If for some reason that doesn't work try File:Green dot.svg. The forest square though would seem better suited in terms of shape and theme than a dot. Now let me see Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary yep 12px would look right for the map I think. Also we could try a forest green header like on the right and a thin green border around the box in the same color, I think it would look better for national parks! Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:59, 6 December 2009 (UTC)
See in the location part to the infobox programming it would be something like |mark = Legenda rezerwat scisly.svg |marksize = 12 |label = {{#if:|{{{map_dot_label}}}|
(so the name of the national park displays on the map alongside the square marker. That should be very easy to fix I'd imagine... Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:18, 6 December 2009 (UTC)
- It appears this feature was already supported in the template, you just needed to pass the correct parameters. Let me know if that isn't what you were looking for. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 19:43, 6 December 2009 (UTC)
Mmm I don't know whether thats a good idea as it tends to create inconsistency. Its probably best it is controlled by the template as default. Could you try it by default at 8px. ? It will take too long to add it all manually! Also didn't you like the green header? Dr. Blofeld White cat 23:17, 6 December 2009 (UTC)
- Due to the number of transclusions, it would probably be best to propose this change here and perhaps here. I did change the default to use the Green (rather than red) dot, but changing the color of the banner, or changing the pin style completely is probably best to run by some other editors first (if anyone cares). The only problem I could see with changing the banner to use a color is that there is another banner which may appear directly under it (see the examples on the template's page). Thanks! Advice regarding template merger proposal
Hi Plastikspork (great user name, by the way), I'm looking for some advice regarding a recent template merger proposal. Nmajdan added generic merge templates to the talk pages of Template:Infobox serial killer and Template:Infobox mass murderer without providing a rational, creating a discussion or listing it at WP:TFD. When I contacted them about this, they left a short, vague note here and still haven't completed the merger proposal process or responded to my two notes on their talk page. I'm tempted to remove the generic merger templates and leave a note saying the merger proposal isn't valid until the steps outlined at WP:TFD are followed; however, that's not too civil. I could add the proper templates and list the proposal with Nmajdan's rational, but I'd like to be part of the merger discussion as well. What do you think? Thanks in advance, momoricks 23:08, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
- I did see the merger proposal when it was first placed. You are correct, that there should be some rationale, or at least some structured discussion on the subject. I believe the implied reasoning would be that one template is a duplicate of the other. I would say the merger is not going to happen unless there is strong consensus to do so. As it stands right now, there appears only to be a strong opinion to not merge. If there are a few more votes against it, the discussion could be closed as "not merged". As you said, taking it to TFD would be a more formal method to force a decision. Otherwise, these things can stay open for some time. How about if we revisit the discussion in about a week and see if any progress has been made. If there is no progress, then I will close it as not merged. New Moon (2009 film) and Eclipse (2010 film)
- Both these two articles were recently submitted for a name change. I did agree with this name change in February, however, now I am a strong opposing factor in why the name should ramian New Moon and Eclipse with the signifigant other name in the first line of the articles.
- WP:NCCN and WP:PRECISION both state the title should be "terms most commonly used", "A good article title is brief and to the point", "Prefer titles that follow the same pattern as those of other similar articles", "An article can only have one name; however significant alternative names for the topic should be mentioned in the article, usually in the first sentence or paragraph". "And despite earlier reports that the movie would be known as The Twilight Saga's New Moon, the title will remain New Moon according to the movie's rep. They just have Twilight Saga in the artwork to identify it for anyone less devoted than your average fanggirl."Source.
- Also see WP:PRECISION. I quote from there: "Articles' titles usually merely indicate the name of the topic. When additional precision is necessary to distinguish an article from other uses of the topic name, over-precision should be avoided. Be precise but only as precise as is needed. For example, it would be inappropriate to name an article "United States Apollo program (1961–1975)" over Apollo program or "Nirvana (Aberdeen, Washington rock band)" over Nirvana (band). Remember that concise titles are generally preferred."
- However, I personally do not think we have had enough input and would like input from people who might not like these movies, or just edit them to help wikipedia out. The pages are: Talk:New Moon (2009 film)#Requested move and Talk:Eclipse (2010 film)#Requested move. Guess What? A casting call has been issued for a VH1 reality dating show starring Frank Maresca (The Entertainer). The show is tentatively entitled "The Entertainer of Love".Didn't see that comin did you. I propose that you make it up to me and help me re-create the Frank Maresca page. What do you think? User:K.M.D1994 10:34, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
- Considering there is no page for Daisy de la Hoya, I would say there is no need for a page for Frank Maresca. However, there could be grounds for creating The Entertainer of Love, once there is a confirmed premiere date. See Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/The_Entertainer_of_Love. Thanks! Move of Template:@@ to user space
I must thank you for the care you showed while moving the "@@" template to my user space, by editing its uses so that they would continue to work.
Actually, back whan I created the template, it did occur to me to place it in my user space; but somehow I got convinced that it wouldn't work. Perhaps because I thought that "{{XX...}}" automatically inserted "Template:" in front of the "XX..." I gather that "{{User:Foo/XX..}}" is handled as a special case, right?
The move was not completely harmless, though. The primary goal of the "@@" template was to remove clutter from the article source, so that the text could be more asily read and edited. Now that {{@@|66577}} has become {{User:Jorge Stolfi/@@|66577}}, that point is harder to see. Sigh.
Moreover, when I saw all those delete notices in my watchlist, I saw red (literally as well as figuratively). I had though that the concerns of the user who proposed the deletion had been answered and that it had been agreed to keep the template until the usability report could be digested and acted upon. Obviously I do not have the habit of reading every change to the AfD page (who does?) so I did not see the two other comments. It took me a while to check that the demo was still working and calm down. Luckily I did not post anything rash before that.
But let me ask, was it worth it? The entire process, from proposal to action and reaction, used a substantial amount of several people's time. Was the "progress" worth it?
And, is the AfD itself the right place to conduct such discussions? Why aren't the discussions carried out in the article's talk page? The AfD may be more convenient for editors who choose to work on across-the-board deletions; it is certainly not for editors who choose to work on articles.
Apart from that, the time between nomination and deletion is ridiculously short. Considering the disproportion between the number of articles that need work and the number of active editors, it is unreasonable to expect that people interested in an article will discuss its deletion within one month. Real problems (like libel, self-promotion, copyright, inadequate name, etc.) can be properly handled by the means of section 2 of Wikipedia:Deletion policy. In extreme cases that will reduce the article to a redirect and then to a speedy deletion. But if the rationale for deletion is an opinion about its worthiness (notability, specialization, etc.), then the discussion should remain open for one year or two, and should be conducted on the article's talk page. I can't see a need for AfD and section 3, but I can see several things wrng in them — in the idea, and in its implementation.
Indeed, as I have tried to point out in other forums, the agressive deletion policy appears to be harming wikipedia by wearing out old editors and (maybe) by preventing new editors from becoming regulars. Until 2005, the body of editors was doubling every 11 months; since 2006, it has stopped growing and is halving every 4 years or so. It seems that most of the editors who are working today started before 2006, and they are slowly dropping off. I am not sure about the cause yet, but I can tell you from self-experience that having an article deleted, or even just challenged, can negate a large chunk of the pleasure one gets out of contributing to Wikipedia.
So I must ask again, is it worth it? All the best, --Jorge Stolfi (talk) 14:38, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for your message. I certainly empathize with your points regarding aggressive deletion. I believe you are talking about WP:TFD, rather than WP:AFD. There are far more editors who contribute to the discussions at WP:AFD, so the one week period is often long enough, so long as the discuss is widely publicized. Luckily at WP:TFD, most of the closures are far less controversial. It's usually a case of cleaning up, merging, and consolidating orphaned templates. I try to do my best to minimize the impact. There aren't that many "template admins" who are willing to spend the time to resolve the issues after the discussions have closed (and I am still in the process of finishing the closing process on a few templates that closed over a month ago) It would be great if there were a cleaner way to demonstrate experimental templates before moving them into mainspace. Thanks again for your comments. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 17:13, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
- Dear Plastikspork, thanks again for your help and careful editing to restore my out-of-body-refs prototype. It is just fine now, and having the template in my private space is definitely the right way to do it. Too bad I did't know it was possible.
As for TfD: I had no idea that the page existed until the "@@" template got tagged.
It may sound schizophrenic, but I do support aggressive deletion (or userification, as you did with "@@") of internal material such as Template:* and Wikipedia:*. In particular, I believe that Wikipedia should have a ban on templates that generate visible canned text or images in articles (such as the current stub templates, navboxes, and all editorial templates such as {{unreferenced}} or {{merge-to}}. An example of a "good" template, by this principle, is {{chem|H|2|SO|3|2+}} that expands to H
2SO2+
3: note that all the visible text in the expansion comes from the arguments of the template call. Apart from aesthetics and intrinsic worth, templates that generate canned text are fundamentally unfair: their authors get to write a sentence once and have it appear in thousands of articles (often through semi-automatic editing), where it usually occupies an inordinate amount of space, often with flashy icons and framing. Thus the opinion of the template's author comes to carry a thousand times more weight than that of ordinary editors. To ensure fairness, there should be a rule saying that any visible material in an article must be explicitly inserted (even if by copy-paste) through a separate manual edit action. Robot edits, in particular, should be limited to activities that do not generate visible article text or images, such as markup fixes, section reordering, category tagging, etc. Editorial tags like {{merge-to}}, if we must have them, should be confined to talk pages. But I suspect that it would be pretty pointless to bring this proposal to a policy forum...
As for AfD, I normally don't have it in my watchlist, so I only read it when some article of mine gets nominated for deletion. I suppose that most of the the people who vote on the AfD, apart from the article's author or "adoptive father", are people who keep the AfD page permanently in their watchlist; which I suspect are not a representative sample of the WP editorship. Thus I think that the AfD process is inherently biased, and therefore a source of much needless irritation. (I have had a couple of articles nominated for the AfD; some I was able to save (e.g. merely by inserting the words "is notable for" before the reason why they were notable). Others were deleted during a period when I was kept away from Wikipedia, and of course I still resent that. I also helped to rescue a few of other people's articles from the AfD, by doing a bit of cleanup and research that the nominators could well have done themselves. And on a couple of occsions I spent hours trying to save other people's articles from the AfD, only to have all my work lost because the articles got deleted anyway. Do I need to say that I do not attempt to do that anymore?) Methinks that, in retrospect, the AfD was a big mistake, and that Wikipedia:deletion policy should have stopped at section 2, "Alternatives to deletion".
Thanks again, and all the best, --Jorge Stolfi (talk) 13:23, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

Jersey Shore (TV series) article
I am sure that I will need help from you in watching this article. If it is not too much trouble, your help in watching out for it would be much appreciated by me.
In turn, let me know if you need any help looking after a particular article or articles. Flyer22 (talk) 21:41, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
- I put it on my watch list. I haven't been watching the show, so I won't be able to revert much more than obvious vandalism. However, I will be happy to do that if I see it. I can't think of any particular articles that I need help watching at the moment. There has been some editing disputes on My Antonio, but that seems to have subsided. Pages for older shows tend to be more problematic since people stop watching them once the season has ended. There is a tool to let you know how many people are "watching" a page, but it only counts the watchlists, and doesn't check to see if those people are active. Thanks! - It's not meant to be that noticeable. Everyone's opinion is supposed to carry equal weight. Sometimes I think we should rename it to "janitor", since most of the time is spent cleaning things up. One more question
Table's basically all done now but after actually saving the template I realized that the table doesn't support rowspan which'll cause some problems being a filmography table, would it be possible to incorporate this? Thanks for your help so far, really appreciate it. Jeffrey Mall (talk • contribs) - 15:43, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
- It is possible in theory, but I think the best approach is to split the table row template from the table header and footer. That way you don't need to have such complicated syntax, but still can have some uniformity in the table format. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 00:38, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

Hello. I need your help. I would like to put up an article for "The Biggest Loser: Couples 3, Also known as season 9. - The section is rather fragmented at the moment, and it reads like a list of trivia, which is why I tagged it. If possible, we would like to avoid having this article reading like a fan site, and instead have it read like an entry in an encyclopedia. There is also an arbitrary division between the "Early life" and "Personal life" sections. If other articles read like WP:FANCRUFT, then those articles should be cleaned up as well. Merry Christmas!!
Once again it is festive season, a time where festive decorations are displayed and gifts are swapped; but what about the true meaning of christmas? The true meaning of christmas is about the fight for freedom and how in times of hardship and misery, one person leads their people to freedom as a great warrior; for those who fight for a cause are warriors and those who fight for a worthy cause are great warriors. Such an act earns respect and honour; but most importantly, brings happiness to their people. So to achieve this as happiness lies in other people's happiness and greatness lies in how you deal with little people, we selflessly think of others in the hope that they will be happy this christmas.
Hi Plastikspork, have a very Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year 2010!

Re: Last Change
Hello,
I am not sure why I was sent a message regarding "unhelpful edits" when the edit I made to The Bachelorette page earlier today was correct. But assuming that a source was simply needed, I have re-edited the entry with the same correction and a source link. FYI, Matt Grant is the main contestant on season 12 of The Bachelor and was never a contestant on The Bachelorette. Whoever placed Mr. Grant as the runner-up in Meredith's season was in error.

You closed the TFD on this almost 3 days ago with a result of "Delete", but it has not been deleted yet. Shouldn't it have been deleted that same day? TJ Spyke 04:43, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
- The typical procedure is to orphan it first before deleting it, so I listed it in the holding cell. If you want to help out, you can remove it from any article in which it is transcluded. Once there are no transclusions, I can delete the template. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 16:32, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

Will Kirby Page
Are we not allowed to add an external link to an article someone has written. It is referred to in his professional paragraph.
Dr. Kirby lectures frequently at national medical conventions on advanced laser tattoo removal techniques and he has published multiple tattoo removal articles in medical journals, most recently in The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology (JCAD) .
It is becoming a little confusing even after reading guidelines as to what is acceptable to wiki and also seems to be subject to the interpretations of each editor. Thanks. Blue-morpho1 (talk) 17:40, 3 January 2010 (UTC)
- Adding references is perfectly fine. When possible, they should be inline footnotes (in my opinion). Looking a bit closer, the reason that I reverted your edits was due to the mangled nature of some of the text. I will see if I can incorporate your reference. Thanks! Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains cast
I removed the heroes_vs_villains entries from the previous seasons' infoboxes because I couldn't find a reliable source for the cast of Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains. The main article revision history (for H v. V) says CBS won't officially announce until the 10th. -- BullWikiWinkle 04:20, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
- Did you see the discussion on Talk:Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains? Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 04:22, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for that; I hadn't looked there. In light of that source then, shouldn't the contestant table in the HvV article be restored? -- BullWikiWinkle 04:28, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
- There is still some argument brewing about if CBS actually released the cast. As it has been said, it's not supposed to be official released for a week. However, aol.com seems to have picked it up as being actually released. I don't really care either way, but we should probably discuss it a bit with other editors before starting a revert war :) Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 04:30, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Help with a template similar to Template:Official
Hi, I have been trying to design a template with the same effect as Template:Official, which you have worked on. It is called Template:gsvlink, and the purpose of it is to provide a link to the site described in an article on Google Street View.
I used all the same formatting as Template:Official. Only problem is while Template:Official leads to an external link as it should, Template:Gsvlink appears as black text.
Here is an example:
{{gsvlink|URL=http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=37.0625,-95.677068&spn=0,299.619141&z=4&layer=c&cbll=37.752871,-94.50857&panoid=J5GWJEeBoZ8OuxY6jW-VNA&cbp=12,25,,0,5}}
Do you think you can help fix this problem? Sebwite (talk) 18:12, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
- If the URL contains an equals sign (=), then you have to use either {{gsvlink|URL=http://...}} or {{gsvlink|1=http://...}}. Let me know if you have any more questions. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 18:16, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
- I just added "URL=" before the name of the link. Now it works! (you can see the example above). Trouble is, I intend for this template to be used by many, not just myself, and most people probably do not know that, so this should be changed so it implants automatically. Sebwite (talk) 18:29, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
- You basically have two choices, either (a) require the use of URL= in your template, and/or (b) pass the individual parameters needed to build the URL (e.g., ll=). Unnamed parameters cannot have bare equals sign, otherwise the parser views it as a parameter. I would go with the second option, if possible, since there is some extraneous stuff in the URL. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 18:34, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
- For now, I made a note of this on the documentation page.
- I am also trying to solve one other problem. I thought the template PAGENAME would make the title of the page automatically appear. As you can see in the example above, this is not working here. Sebwite (talk) 18:37, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
- Use {{PAGENAME}} instead of {{{PAGENAME}}}. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 18:39, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
- It works! [thumb up]
Since you're the closest thing to a {{Infobox lighthouse}} expert I know, I ask for help, please. Would you take a look at the subject article? I've written several articles on range lights that have included two {{Infobox lighthouse}}s, some with an embedded NRHP infobox, and, until this one, both infoboxes have set to the same width. Here, though, the bottom infobox sets wider than the top one. This is true on screens as narrow as 600px and as wide as 1440px, as well as both Firefox and Explorer. It appears to be related to the font size at which I view the article -- at small sizes the lower box is narrower, at normal and large sizes, the lower box is wider.
Am I correct that the box width is supposed to be 23 ems? Which should be the same, top to bottom? So what gives?

- Nantucket Harbor Range Lights
- Nantucket Range Lights
- Hospital Point Light
- Ipswich Range Lights

- I believe the problem is due to the extended precision in the coordinates, which does not currently linewrap. If you can confirm that this is the issue (e.g., by "using preview" with the latitude and longitude seconds commented out), then I can see if I can provide a fix. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 23:51, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Closing of Template:GSVtable
As you recall, I had a discussion with you about a template I created. Coincidentally, you were involved in the closing of a TfD I participated in involving an unrelated template, something unrelated.
The way you closed it was "Substitute and delete." I agree with everything about it, except for the delete part of it.
The one thing I believe should have been different was the retention of the edit history of this template. As stated by you and others, the future of the content needs to be discussed, and the edit history is valuable in enabling such discussion.
What you can do to resolve this is:
- Restore Template:GSVtable
- Move Template:GSVtable to mainspace
- Redirect that page to Google Street View (possibly Google Street View#Areas included)
The results would otherwise be the same. So why not? Sebwite (talk) 01:23, 7 January 2010 (UTC)
- I will move it to your userspace, and you can decide if you want to try to move it into articlespace. As you are aware, there may be some resistance to this idea per Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Google Street View locations (2nd nomination), but if you want to try, go ahead. {{Infobox place}}
to the new template. Have you considered say {{Infobox geographic region}}? It's current up at TFD, but there is no reason why it couldn't be used for this purpose. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 16:39, 7 January 2010 (UTC)- lol... {{Infobox geographic region}} is exactly what I was looking for, originally! ah well. Thanks for getting back to me, I appreciate it. It's no reflection on you, but I've decided that I'd rather not deal with this particular infobox situation. It's sort of a matter of principle, because if I need some sort of "permission" to create or edit the template then I'd rather just do something else. I don't know, once the {{Infobox geographic region}} tfd situation resolves I might change my mind, but more likely I'll have simply moved on to other things by then. *shrug*

Page turning
Your're good with programming. Any idea how I would go about customizing my layout so I can browse the encyclopedia as you would in a written book encyclopedia? So say I was reading an article on Khagan, in the task bar at the top there is a arrow forward and arrow backwards icon so I can browse alphabetically and read the next article Khagani Mammadov or click left arrow backwards and read Khagaria district etc. I know ther eis the prefix index but it does my head in having to type in prefixes and when I do it starts at the page I'm on and I can't browse the article before it if you know what I mean... It would be nice to have the option to browse alphabetically. Any idea how I could program in my monobook to have two arrows in the top hand right corner of the screen for scroll forward and scroll backwards feeding off the alphabetical index? I wouldn't browse this way all the time but for browsing I think it should be a valid option. Can you help? Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:18, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
- Interesting. I have no idea how one would do that without having the entire list. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 01:09, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
I'd imagine it would be programming to take you straight to where the article is in the index and somehow move you onto the next or previous article by by-passing the index list.... So you click arrow forward, it reads the index and the current article you are on and rolls you onto the next one... Its just as an encyclopedia you'd think there would be the option to browse alphabetically without having to go into the index....
I think it can be done. It would be something like:
addOnloadHook(function() { addPortletLink('p-cactions','http://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=Special:PrefixIndex&from={subst:PAGENAME}&namespace=0','Index','ca-index'); });
However I can't get the subst:PAGENAME to work of the name of the article I am browsing on it only subst:PAGENAME's the Dr. Blofeld in my .js. Ideally I want whatever page I'm on for it to read that and when I click index it finds it and lists the next articles alphabetically. It would a if ... subst: type of documentation. Can you sort this? Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:53, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
- I know AWB can process a sequence of pages. If you had the list specified beforehand, it should be possible to cook something up in Javascript. However, it would take some time. My personal method is to use "navigation tabs" in firefox. I pull open the page with the list, then middle click on each link to open each on in a tab. As I am finished working on each page, I close the tab. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 18:49, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

Abuse relisting
I am extremely shocked that you have relisted Abuse. It has been a major nightmare for me having to waste my time on this - now the ordeal goes on for another week. I dont think you have looked at this properly, all those who wanted deletion have now withdrawn or moved to a neutral stance (User:Apoc2400 for example. There isnt any compromise to be reached as the view is now unanimously a Keep. There has been far too much discussion already. Do you want me to have a heart attack or something ? --Penbat (talk) 18:26, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you for your concern. I'm sorry to hear that Wikipedia is causing you undue stress. I agree that there is currently no consensus to entirely delete the template, however there still appears to be some question about the template's size and scope. I am hopeful that some future discussion could result in a satisfactory conclusion with regard to this issue. I disagree that the discussion is "unanimous" in anyway. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 18:39, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
- it isnt unanimous from the point of view of everybody saying keep but there is a mixture of neutral, withdrawn and keep. But there just isnt anybody in the discussion who wishes to persue the case for deletion. Woohokitty who first wanted the TFD posted to say he "wished he never bothered with the TFD in the first place", and (User:Apoc2400 went neutral. Have you any idea how much time it took me to write such a vast quantity of text. Do i have to start all over again ? I do have a real world life you know. Even Black whatshisname who has now withdrawn didnt want a simple deletion. He just wanted the template replaced with smaller ones but he now accepts that it is impossible as there is no recognised taxonomy. Where is the mountain of text i wrote is it lost forever ? I will not let this matter rest. You seem to have got it all wrong. Who do you think was still willing to counter the keep ? --Penbat (talk) 18:58, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you for your comments. From your analysis, it sounds like there is no harm in relisting as the result will be as you desire in about a week. If the relisting concerns, you can always ask for a second opinion from another admin. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 19:04, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
- You are still missing the point. Firstly the last week has caused a huge me a huge amount of strain and stress. Also the problem is as i explained in a lot of detail previously about 3 times is that most of the general public (and that probably includes most Wikipedia editors) seriously misunderstand the unity of diverse aspects of abuse which is specifically why I started doing the abuse article to explain that to people. It was the existance of the template that motivated me in the first place. I felt that i had to go to a huge amount of detail to explain to those in the TFD discussion why abuse has common aspects. It wouldnt surprise me if the same thing happened again and i had to write yet another extremely long essay to explain the concept of abuse which may well again convert them to a neutral stance or withdraw. Has the previous text been lost for ever ? Do i have to write it all out again from scratch or what ? It looks i will be chained to a keyboard again next week like i was last week.--Penbat (talk) 19:17, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
- The prior discussion was preserved when the discussion was relisted, so no need to write it all out again. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 19:21, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry i misread a sentence of yours. Discussion of splitting the template has already been discussed ad nauseum about 3 times and rejected so i still cant see any point in extending the TFD for another 7 days. It is a complete waste of time. --Penbat (talk) 20:40, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

i am completely baffled --Penbat (talk) 14:47, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
- Your very first comment was "Very strong KEEP for plenty of reasons". There is no need to !vote again. You are certainly welcome to reaffirm your stance, but it makes it hard for a closing admin if there are multiple bold !votes. Thank you. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 14:54, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
- I think you have got this completely wrong and resent the implication that i would cheat. I would like a ruling on this from another admin. We have just started a completely new discussion. What happens if a participant from the old discussion now takes a different view ? I could well do without all this hassle.--Penbat (talk) 15:06, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
- are you not responding ? --Penbat (talk) 15:34, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
- I was in a meeting. I never said anyone was cheating. I simply said that it makes it easier for the closing admin if there is only one bold !vote per editor. Thank you. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 16:09, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
- I still think you have got it completely wrong. It is not just a matter of an editor counting up the bold bits of text, views are likely to change as the result of later discussion and you didnt cover the situation where an editor in the 1st discussion changes his mind in the 2nd discussion. What is he to do then? Opinions are always likely to change as the result of discussion - that is the whole point of discussion.
- If you actually read the discussion in the first TFD, you will see that User:Black Falcon, User:Woohookitty, User:Apoc2400 all effectively all changed their views to neutral which is why i was completely baffled why we are having the TFD ordeal all over again. If you just looked at User:Black Falcon, User:Woohookitty, User:Apoc2400s embolden text, which it looks like you have done, you will get a completely incorrect picture of their later view.
- I would like a completely different admin to take over and also review the basis of why we are having this TFD all over again and wasting everybodies time ?--Penbat (talk) 17:20, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
- Also it sounds like if i spent the next 7 days successfully changing the mind of those opposed in the new TFD (like i did with the 1st TFD) it will be ignored anyway. The whole thing is completely futile and pointless.--Penbat (talk) 18:30, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, it is a discussion and not a vote, which is why I called it a !vote. If you want another admin to review the TFD, you could try WP:DRV, which probably won't work since it wasn't deleted. So, the other option would be WP:AN. I do not intend to be the admin who closes the discussion. Thank you. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 19:53, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
- Yes but in my view the whole basis and validity of the relist is incorrect and is futile to carry on with see Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2010_January_24#Very_important_statement_on_the_validity_of_this_TFD --Penbat (talk) 20:02, 25 January 2010 (UTC)

Last names on Bachelor 14
Hey, I'm confused as to why it's so important to you that this season of the Bachelor's bachelorettes' last names be sourced. Previous seasons of the Bachelor and Bachelorette have last names listed, not sourced, and you've never done anything about those. FORT I know is not a reliable source either, but they've been sleuthing and they had to get these names from somewhere. I believe that the names are correct. For example, you deleted Tenley's last name (Molzahn) and tenleymolzahn.com was the source...the website was created by a friend of hers (found that in news articles), so how is that not a reliable source? Basically, why are you freaking out about having soruces for names? (Are you gonna go and say, delete all the last names on Bachelorette 5 because they're not sourced? It's getting annoying. Please answer me, thanks. Onesmallnote (talk) 20:20, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
- I am trying to follow WP:BLP. Just because other pages have unsourced last names, doesn't mean we should continue that practice. I would welcome any help in cleaning up the lack of reliable sources and removal of unsourced content. Thank you. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 20:23, 25 January 2010 (UTC)

5 star hotel
Actually this needs a request for comment discussion I think. Basically I added the stars paramater back into the hotel infobox but one editor reverted me. Personally I think number of stars for a hotel is standard information and should not be missing. Ideally I'd like similar ones for 4-star, 3-star, 2-star . However if you can find a way of writing it into the template so if you write 5-star in the infobox it displays like the template I'll happy delete it. However, can we please open up a discussion somwhere, preferrably in a neutral forum to see what peoples view are on including stars in the infobox? ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 10:39, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
- Sure, it was just coming up on the list of orphaned templates. Also, it would be good to have something a bit more flexible, which would allow for an optional number of stars. Looking around a bit, I did find {{Rating}} and {{Stars}}. I really don't have a strong opinion about the template, but I was hoping to get it off the orphaned template list. Thanks! Pushpin map label
Hi Plastikspork, you seem to be the primary editor for {{Infobox settlement}}. So maybe you can address this issue:
The pushpin map label is not customizable and takes the form of the infobox name. Can a "pushpin_label" field be added to overwrite the default label? I am thinking of some instances were the default is very long and it would be advantageous to have a customizable label. Thanks. -- P 1 9 9 • TALK 20:13, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
- Right, currently, the default is name, and if that is blank, it uses official_name. Of course, you can completely remove the label by using pushpin_label_position = none. I suppose I don't see any reason why we couldn't add pushpin_label. However, it would seem strange that name would be too long. I can see why official_name may be long, but it would seem cumbersome to have a place with no short name? Could you show me an example, it would also help with testing any solution I may implement. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 21:07, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
- Example: Head, Clara and Maria, Ontario. And alternatively: Leeds and the Thousand Islands, Ontario (I was thinking of shortening the label to "Leeds and the 1000 Islands"). Thanks again. -- P 1 9 9 • TALK 21:44, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
- In the first example, I believe the problem is resolved by defining name. In the second example, I don't see the shortened title being that much shorter. That is not to say that I don't see a reason for adding the pushpin_label, it just doesn't seem entirely necessary for either of those two cases? Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 21:50, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
- Granted, in most cases it won't be necessary to override the default, and in the 2 previous examples, it is merely a nice-to-have option. Another example: Timiskaming, Unorganized, East Part, Ontario --> Unorg. Timiskaming East. BTW, when the pushpin_label_position is set to top, only the first line is above the dot and consecutive lines fall over and below the dot, which renders this option rather pointless. Can this also be fixed? -- P 1 9 9 • TALK 13:57, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

The most important thing to remember is that you are only allowed to upload an image if you are the owner of the image, or, if it is released under "free license". Pushpin map for museums
Hi. Can you add a pushpin map option to Template:Infobox museum? I know it has one, but it should be standard DMS coordinates and pushpin_map= rather than "map-type" and decimal. ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 14:32, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
- Just to be clear, you want to allow for DMS specification of the coordinates? As you pointed out, map_type does specify the {{Location map}}, it's just that it only allows decimal coordinates at the moment. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 22:04, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
Yeah you know like most templates which you simply enter in the DMS coordinates and pushpin_map= like infobox settlement, mountain etc rather than map-type=3.12.
- Currently the syntax is 'latitude = ', 'longitude = ', 'map_type = foo', where foo is the name of the location map. So, other than the fact that the parameter is called map_type, rather than location map, the only thing to add is 'latm, longm, lats, longs, ...' ? I just want to make sure I get it right. Thanks! Thank you for catching the map and coord problem on that one, that should be the only difference between the old and the new, infoboxes required putting in the metric oneself, geoboxes do the conversion for you which keeps down human error which is why I prefer them and as I work on NY Capital District municipalities I am trying to keep a consistent look across them all as I go through them. Articles for deletion nomination of Jake Pavelka
I have nominated Jake Pavelka, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jake Pavelka. Mapit-US-cityscale and Infobox settlement
I've completed my first pass through the pages that transclude {{Mapit-US-cityscale}}. If there was a {{Infobox settlement}} with a |latd=
argument (signalling the presence of latitude/longitude), I removed the Mapit-US-cityscale and added the parameters to make the coordinates show in the infobox and in the upper-right of the article. There are about 2,600 articles that still transclude Mapit-US-cityscale. I will take a look at those and see what patterns exist, but I know you are working on it already. Specifically, you said you have a script to add Infobox settlement and so I presume you'll be using that. Let me know how you would like me to proceed. I won't be very active on WP for the next week. — John Cardinal (talk) 16:40, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
- Update - I've fixed most of the articles that used some infobox other than Infobox settlement, including {{Infobox mountain}}, {{Infobox museum}}, etc. Infobox settlement should be added to almost all of the approximately 1,600 articles left that transclude Mapit-US-cityscale, and given you have a script for that, I leave those to you. There are a few oddball cases where it's not clear how to proceed; in most cases, the article has an infobox that doesn't support a location parameter, such as {{Infobox road}}, or there is some other complicating factor like multiple places described in one article. We can fix this on a case-by-case basis after you fix the articles that need Infobox settlement. If there is something else I can do, please let me know. — John Cardinal (talk) 16:54, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
- Great! I have been adding infoboxes where possible, which goes relatively quickly using the script that I wrote. It does require some hand tweaks on occasion, so it's not entirely automatic. However, at this rate we should be done soon. Thanks for all your help! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 19:55, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

The {{infobox windmill}} is not displaying all parameters. I've just noticed that the "Roundhouse storeys" parameter is not displaying. Mesoamerica
Hi. I made Template:Infobox Pre-Columbian site see Zaculeu as an example. I need you to sort something. One the map parameter so you can also display a fixed map in the same way you would add a photograph to the infobox. you know like infobox settlement. The other thing was having the ability to display multiple site on the same map like Quelepa. Is this possible within an infobox? If so can you add this so that this can easily be done without affecting the general pushpin map locator? ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 14:44, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

Something like this option:
Don't worry its not essential. If though you could just sort out a regular map for map= like the standar d infobox so you can add a ready made map to it also this would be great. ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 16:27, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

wiki evolution
Hello Plastikspork
I am doing some research into the evolution of information transfer systems and was hoping you might be able to help me. Could you tell me where I can get statistics on 1) when info-boxes first appeared in wikipedia and how quickly they spread to their current levels, 2) what information was in those early boxes and how this has changed and 3) how successful are info-boxes compared to free text in getting clicked when the same link is available in both the box and the text?
Please let me know if you want to know more about my research or if you have any questions about the kind of statistics I am looking for. Any help would be appreciated!

Infobox Pre Columbian site
Hi. As you know I created Template:Infobox Pre-Columbian site a few weeks back. However, at present it cannot be used for World Heritage Sites like say Tikal and really they ought to contain the pre colombian infoboxes for greater information summary about the site like the rest of the articles. Simon Burchell the main editor of these articles has also requested that the World Heritage Site infobox is replicated and inserted into a section with the pre colombian box. So see the box on thr right. Can you add this to the Pre Columbian template perhaps add the bottom of it so the World Heritage Site banner is the same and columns within a section. Once done can you add a pre colombian infobox to Tikal with the merged World Heritage site parameters included so the example can be copied. Thanks. ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 13:49, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

- Do you want to embed the World Heritage Site box (for example, see how {{Infobox NRHP}} can be embedded with the embed option in boxes like {{Infobox lighthouse}} in Point Reyes Lighthouse)? Or, do you just want to replicate the features (i.e. copy fields) to a subsection of {{tl|Infobox Pre-Columbian site]]? Another option would be to just stack them, which wouldn't require any modification of either infobox. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 00:33, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
Mmm I think like the Point Reyes Lighthouse but just replicate exactly what is in World Heritage infobox tacked onto the bottom of the infobox.
- The lighthouse example embeds the NRHP template, so there are actually two templates there, one embedded in the other. I will see what is necessary to do this. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 22:14, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
- Oh I see, in that case I'd rather the contours were built into the actual template than one being embedded into another by article.. ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 22:22, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
Oh. Another thing. Check out the infobox here. A clickable map option. Wouldn't this save a lot of mapping troubles if we added this technology to the infobox settlement? It would mean readers being able to click regionally/nationally to see where it is. I came across this recently as I'm trying to find a solution to the American mapping problem. There is a current diagreement with my approach to replace some of the county locators with decent svg maps. However the current location maps don't show where in the United States it is. My ideal would be clickable map option where you can click the map and see the place nationally, state regionall, and county wise. E.g see Birmingham, Alabama. Ideally I would like something like Aarau where you can click the map and have it display the county map without having to display two set in stone. Would it be possible to adopt the French wiki technology to provide clickable map options to infoboxes and permit these maps to be shown in one like the Mount Kosciuszko example? ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 22:03, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
- I will have a look in a bit. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 22:14, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
I've noticed you've also been doing a fair amount of infobox cleanup for the US. The problem is massive, many of the Rambot articles have been neglected. Now if we could sort out the mapping. problem at least. SO I'm thinking that using this feature you could click the map and see the county census map or state pin locator or national state locator and it all to be contained in one without bloating the infobox and to cater for different interests. As no amount of debating is going to change the fact that some people like the census maps, and others like myself prefer wider pin maps... A clickable scale map option would be the best in my view... I think it is a new feature on French wiki. A few of the German wikipedians are also interested in adding this feature. Sure looks good..
Here's the template parameter link for the mapping: here. ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 22:21, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
Essay on redundant templates
As you know, TFD gets a lot of cases where templates are redundant to one another. Although template redundancy is widely disapproved of, I couldn't find a unified essay explaining why it is a bad idea to have redundant templates and what the alternatives are. So I started one. For the moment it is at User:RL0919/Templates of Redundancy Templates. I was hoping you could take a look and give me suggestions, or just make changes if you see ways to improve it. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks. --RL0919 (talk) 18:54, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
Filmyear
Why are you changing items like {{fy|1955}} to [[1955 in film|1955]]? The clear consensus of the TfD was that such links violate WP:EGG. The templates should be removed, and no links should be added. Erik (talk) 21:55, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, that was my mistake. I thought I gave it a more limited list. I will run a script over the ones that I changed, and make sure that from now on it changes the rest to raw text. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 21:56, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
- Whew! Good to know; I was worried that there was some technicality involved where we'd have to work out a separate discussion for specifically de-linking them. I'll get out of your way, then. Erik (talk) 22:28, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
- There are a couple potential exceptions, which I don't plan to entirely unlink, although someone else is welcome to do it: (1) Links on an [[YYYY in film]] page, (2) Links on any [[List of ...]] page. Other than that, the rest will be entirely delinked. If someone disagrees, they can always revert me, and discuss in a wider forum. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 22:40, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
- Sounds reasonable to me. On the few that I've been able to do (not being on the machine where I have all my automated editing plugins configured), I've only left the linking in cases where it was clear that linking was to be expected -- for example, on a talk page discussion about the linking. A "Year in" type page having links to other "Year in" pages seems reasonable. And thanks for working on these, since there are a lot to remove. --RL0919 (talk) 22:50, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Filmyear again
Hi,
My pages use {{fy}} thousands of times, so I am really surprised that their talk pages received no notification of the elimination of this template.
So you have now converted pages like: List of films based on war books — post-1945
Since I am the only one who updates these pages on a regular basis, I would rather not have to revert to the double-date entry, which I eliminated last summer by installing the fy template.
Can you change all occurrences of [[2000 in film|2000]] to plain 2000, etc., and eliminate the lookup entirely?
My pages are called: List of films based on ***** books (but not List of films based on spy books), and List of films based on westerns.
Thanks, Varlaam (talk) 06:52, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
- Sure, I was being more cautious with the "List of ..." pages, but I can completely delink those as well. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:19, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
- Those pages were started 4 years ago and linked everything: [[USA]], [[UK]], even [[Novel]].
- I was maintaining the film lookup partly for aethestics. Spot of colour. Contrast between film year (colour) and book year (no colour).
- But if it's double entry bookkeeping and a return to accounting class, let's just abolish it now.
- It took me hours to do the fy conversions. I am guessing you've got a tool with regular expressions or something better than what I used.
- No rush.
- Now, as I add new rows, I'll kill the lookup.
- Happy zapping, Varlaam (talk) 15:38, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, I am using User:Plastikspork/replace.js, with \[\[([0-9]+) in film\|\1\]\] converted to $1. It goes pretty quickly. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:40, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
- Cool. I'm not using vi or anything of that ilk, I'm using Wordpad!
- Since you seem very friendly and helpful (false impression?), can I ask a question?
- There is some streamlining I would like to do on the 4-year-old table structure. In the future.
- This month is not convenient. But at some point, could I ask you for a helping hand with that?
- The current structure has unnecessary overhead built into it.
- Varlaam (talk) 17:07, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

I've removed the blue boundaries so it looks better already. I don't think there would be any complaints if the pin map was enlargened and the COA placed on top like the German template. See Hockenheim for instance. When you have amoment perhaps you could enlargened the map and place it underneath, it should not be the same size as the COA!. Although for Austria given that ita horizontal map a default 250px map size would be perfect underneath say a 100px COA. See Mauthausen. The map is way too small. Needs to be 250 px undeneath with a 6px size pin dot and a town label too. Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:05, 20 March 2010 (UTC) Can you enlargen the Austrian map then and place it under a 100px coat of arms? Shouldn't be a controversial... Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:50, 22 March 2010 (UTC)
- How about if we propose the change on the talk page and check to see if there are any objections. If not, we can go ahead. In fact, the whole thing could probably be updated to switch the backend to a standard template like {{infobox settlement}} or {{geobox}}. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:04, 22 March 2010 (UTC)
{{infobox settlement}}
, please. I believe this was suggested after the recent TfD. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 15:17, 22 March 2010 (UTC)- Yes, infobox settlement seems to be the closest in format. I'll see if I can build something in the sandbox a bit later today. The if/case statements in the template are pretty complicated, so it will take a bit of time to parse it. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:35, 22 March 2010 (UTC)
Yeah the German text in the infoboxes is enough of a problem to propose converting it. There isn't a need for them lying about in German given that the infoboxes have now been transferred. Besides which most of the places need district maps added to them so a drive is needed. Best to do it all in one go.. I've opened a discussion at Template talk:Infobox Town AT. Survivor Gabon Tribe Colors
Hello, Plastikspork –
Regarding your recent action of reverting the color changes on the Survivor: Gabon article, I did start a [discussion section] on the Talk Page suggesting the colors for the page (my IP will likely have changed as of now – editing at a different location). I did it so as to put a stop to all the constant color changes that was taking place throughout the past weeks, and decided to use those colors in the article (see the [edit note]: I wrote "See talk page.") after the colors were once again changed (by User:Bclrocks10) without discussing. I hope you can address this issue – if there is anything you still see inaccurate in the suggested colors, feel free to reply on the talk page.
Thank you.

- Your revert on Survivor: Guatemala was correct. You reverted undiscussed colour changes. However, you, yourself, have been changing colours without discussion on several other Survivor season pages. Your warning from Gogo Dodo was telling you to stop changing the colours without discussion, and to act civil and maturely when communicating with other editors. We're not trying to pick on you, we're trying to help you become a better editor. We know that you are capable of contributing constructively. And we're not doing this because you're 12; we would've done the same thing no matter what your age. -- Meäghân talk 23:46, 23 March 2010 (UTC)
Spain again
Austrian map now sorted. I've made a bot request to User talk:Kotniski to copy all infoboxes from Spanish wiki. Even those which have infoboxes mostly need replacing with 2009 census details and maps etc. But as I don't want any of the infoboxes you;ve added already overidden can you please discuss with him what you've edited so far and a plan to copy the Spanish infoboxes using his bot. Thanks. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:15, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
Infobox crater again
Hi,
You closed Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2010 March 7#Template:Infobox crater by userfying this template. I've since noticed that {{infobox crater}} has been recreated, but this time as a redirect, to an entirely new infobox which does exactly the same thing at {{infobox terrestrial impact site}}. Furthermore, it looks like the original TfD failed to recognise that there's an existing template which does exactly the same job - {{infobox crater data}}. Any thoughts on how to proceed? - Thanks for the notification. This does seems strange given that the new template was created by Ikluft, who is the editor who nominated the original one for deletion. I'll open a discussion at User talk:Ikluft and see if we can figure out what exactly is going on. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:01, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
- Okay, I had a closer look and I believe I see what is going on. The new template is basically
{{Infobox Earth crater}}
, but restricted to only impact craters on Earth (no volcanoes, sinkholes). The redirect is probably a mistake, but perhaps it's just there to guide editors to the template. It does seam strange that a TFD was necessary in the first place, if all that was desired was to move it and change its scope. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:10, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
- So basically the TfD was a waste of time, and rather than renaming the existing template this editor has gone and created an entirely new one for a purpose which he argued wasn't necessary. Great. D'you think the new template should inherit off {{infobox crater data}} like the existing extraterrestrial ones? Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 14:32, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, it appears it was a bit of a waste of time. Although, the subsequent redirect wasn't created by the nominator. I'll change that to point to crater data. I would think that a more unified "Infobox impact crater" would be feasible and desirable, given the similarity. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 14:50, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
