So, the above article is done, and GA nominated. What do you think? I also nominated it for a DYK, hope the hook is good. Care to check? — Legolas (talk2me) 15:54, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

Hey, Dharmendra will be an interesting development. I would definitely need some time. I was thnking of the "Kutte, Kaminey" dialogue to be uploaded as a NFC ogg file. That will be an important addition to legacy. I had promoted Madonna to FA, and I really like the way that article has been arranged. I was wonderin what do you think, can we incorporate that for Dharmendra? — Legolas (talk2me) 03:22, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Replied to your messages over on Commons - the reply to Skye is on the requests page. I should get the Skye one done reasonably soon.

As for Ireland, hands are tied without data I'm afraid (the dataset is for GB only)... I want to do that, but no joys on finding stuff yet :/--Nilfanion (talk) 00:07, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Gregorio S. Araneta requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Roshven

[edit]

Your edits to this page have been undone. I have trimmed down the jemima bio info to just the stuff that refers to Roshven. All the other info (i.e. vegetation, economy) should be left. You say it is unsourced - untrue. There was a reference to www.roshven.com. This is the website my grandparents created. Jemima is my great great grandmother and the info on roshven.com is information that has passed down through the generations of my family. My grandfather also gave me more information to add here combined with my knowledge of Roshven. (My grandparents lived there for over 60 years and owned roshven farm (my family has lived there for hundreds)) Therefore I have a lot of knowledge of this place. This info has been added again and must remain. Colinmotox11 (talk) 11:02, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

If you have concerns over this page please highlight them on the talk page. :)

Colinmotox11 (talk) 11:44, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

I do not have problems with you changing parts of the article to improve the way in which it is written and making amendments to gramamr etc. However you removed nearly all of this article which is not constructive. As you will see I have trimmed to bio to only include info which is relevant to Roshven. This has a reference and has come from www.roshven.com. Therefore this is all fine to be included in this article. The other information (such as climate, economy etc) has just come from my extensive knowledge of this place. I am aware about the Wikipedia conflict of interests rule however in this case there is no bias etc. I am merely adding information which is correct and informative. You are welcome to amend parts of it to correct tone and make this more suitable but just delting ALL the information is not constructive. Colinmotox11 (talk) 12:33, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Sword of Good Faith

[edit]
The Sword of Good Faith

For a courageous and selfless act that will do more to realign the gender balance on Wikipedia than endless navel gazing, I hereby award Dr. Blofeld the Sword of Good Faith. Geometry guy 21:23, 2 February 2011 (UTC) (PS. Please don't ask Jimbo for approbation, as refusal often offends. PPS. I hope you change your mind and return!)

Thanks for saying what you said and doing what you did. Many others, including me lack the courage. Best wishes. 86.166.4.131 (talk) 22:16, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
I find that I rarely agree with Jimbo about anything, and certainly not about these currently fashionable gender-balance concerns. What was it last year? Child protection and pending changes? The man is an intellectual butterfly. So Dr. Blofeld, expecting any kind of recognition of your efforts is doubly pointless as a) it's never likely to happen and b) who cares what Jimbo thinks anyway? I don't know which comment of yours got you branded a sexist troll, but FWIW I'm probably at least as much of a sexist troll as you are, which is not at all. I've asked a few female editors I've got to know through working with them on writing articles, and to a man(!) they've all said that the focus should be on content, not whether it's written by a male or a female. Would having a 50–50 gender split improve the quality of our content? It's difficult to see how it could, unless the chauvinist idea that knitting and cooking articles are currently sadly under-represented is in play. The female editors I've worked with write in areas like medicine, transport engineering, coal mining, medieval history and literature. Nothing very obviously gender-related there. Give yourself some time to cool down and resign yourself to the realities of life here on wikipedia. And when you come back never go to Jimbo's talk page again, and don't expect anything from him. :-) Malleus Fatuorum 22:29, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
My views on the issue are pretty similar: stop fussing, focus on content, and encourage more contributors to join and stay by making Wikipedia a more enjoyable place to contribute. I've been following several threads on Jimbo-talk, including this one, and it is surprising how much people expect of him still. There may be humor in my award, but there are genuine issues here too.
Jimbo is the wrong person to ask for approval/recognition, as he doesn't have time to keep in touch with the community. He has a traditional role as a founding figure, but he is neither a leader nor an employer of the volunteers here. He doesn't edit much and he doesn't always get it right (who does?). So, we are inspired by the ideal, not the man. Those who want recognition for their work should seek it within the community.
My wiki-philosophy has always been: don't look in from the outside pointing at problems, join in and try to fix them. That requires a patience and determination that butterflies don't have. Geometry guy 23:27, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
Listen to the good advice being offered here. Don't worry about whether Jimbo himself thanks you for your contributions. Know instead that there are lots and lots of other contributors here who have noticed and are appreciative of all the work you do here. Well beyond that are the millions of readers who come across articles you have started or otherwise worked on and - even though they never type a single letter or punctuation mark on Wikipedia, let alone know who has contributed something, are glad that the information exists here for them to find. LadyofShalott 23:49, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
I'm guessing from your user name LadyofShalott that you're one of those rare female editors, so obviously to sexist trolls like myself and Dr. Blofeld your opinion can safely be discounted.</JOKE> Malleus Fatuorum 00:02, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
<grin> @ Malleus. LadyofShalott 04:09, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
Hi Dr. Blofeld. I don't like to get involved with contentious topics, but I will say something that shouldn't be too controversial. I haven't been here on Wikipedia very long, and I don't think I've ever had any contact with you while here, but I'm certain you're viewing this, and I'll bet you're going to come to your senses and return sooner or later. If not, I'll give you my opinion on this: why would you leave because of something Jimbo Wales said? I've been here long enough to know that Jimbo, despite having co-founded the site, isn't at the helm of the ship anymore. Sure, his opinions hold a lot of influence with some people, but he's not the be all end all of the Wiki. Leaving because Jimbo upset you or accused you of something is like leaving England today because the Queen said something rude to you. I mean, sure, she's a beloved public figure, but she's kind of superfluous now. Anyway, just a thought. If I'm out of line here, please feel free to remove this. Here's hoping, though, that you'll listen to the advice of the experienced editors who posted above me, and ignore the nasty remarks that are sure to follow below, on this page. Best, -RHM22 (talk) 02:49, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
Dr. Blofeld and Jimbo Wales need one another, although I must admit, I think Jimbo needs Blofeld more. I am sure that their talk will produce wonders as they are basically the two people who have build Wikipedia (although in different ways). Blofeld, with his 60k+ articles is surely Mr. Wikipedia and has led by example many editors. Now there are articles on our dear Blofeld such as this [1]. Probably we should start thinking about building an article about him to make him come back? Sources have started to show up. Notability? --Brunswick Dude (talk) 06:50, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

Our self-respect can only be vitiated by ourselves

[edit]

Hi Blofeld, I'd like to pitch in with a word that in the real sense of it, the suits dont matter. We need only say thanks to the suits once for having put Wikipedia up, thats all. The rest of it all is our work, our play, our legacy, man. Why on earth should a thanks or edit delete by someone else affect your sense of self-worth? Quoting Gandhi - They cant take away our self-respect if we dont give it to them. Please return as an article of faith with the rest of the editor community. AshLin (talk) 12:06, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

I agree, and I hope you return sooner than later. I do appreciate your esteem for recognition; I appreciate the barnstar you awarded me. It's the only award I've gotten here, which is fine. I consign everything I do here to the public from which I have harvested it. I hope you'll consider a collegial dose of Wikipedia:DGAF and press on with your positive contributions. JFHJr () 09:32, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

Thankyou to everybody who commented here. Jimbo's comments were only part of the reason but I'm happy to say that the real issue I had is now being attended to, and things are looking promising, that's all I can say at the moment. It is us who've built this website into what it is, not Jimbo and it is us who mold it the way we want to with minimal interference from the foundation. It would be nice if the "core community" even got an annual word of thanks by email from the foundation but I guess we have a lot to be thankful for to them and Jimbo for keeping wikipedia free and advert free when they could easily be generating massive earnings for themselves.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:04, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

I am in complete agreement with you. It is essential to the Wikipedia project to have a core community focussed on the ideal of a free encyclopedia. This community needs to be valued and encouraged, and we should make everyone more aware of that. Welcome back, Geometry guy 00:00, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

Request you reconsider your retirement

[edit]

Dr. Blofeld...I greatly admire all your contributions and am incredibly impressed with your top level achievement of article starts...a truly awesome level of contribution. I was behind the curve on the gender gap discussion and brought it to Jimbo's page to open a dialogue after someone I know linked me to the NYT piece...my intentions weren't to suggested affirmative action, suggest that we must change in some fundamental way, nor to say all men are pigs (I might be, if you ask my ex)...I was simply dismayed that the proportion of female editors was so low and was curious if we could figure out why (not that such a thing has an ABC answer). The last thing I would wish from such a discussion would be to see someone that has done as much as you have for all of us to retire...so I urge you to reconsider this. There aren't many thank yous any of us get for our sometimes tireless dedication and oftentimes passionate drive on this website. You have made it a better place and I hope you will continue to do so.--MONGO 00:52, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

The article Christine Schachenmann has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The article fails to address WP:ARTIST. A search on Google, GNews and GBooks shown no evidence of notable awards or permanent exhibition though her work has been exhibited. There are no useful alternative sources at de:Christine Schachenmann where this article appears to be translated from. Created in 2009, it has failed to improve and there seems little prospect of notability being addressed in the near future.

The article Franz Anatol Wyss has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Searching GNews I find one relevant article about an exhibition and GBooks shows his self-published catalogues and tangential mentions but nothing to show significant impact in the sense of WP:ARTIST such as notable awards or permanent exhibition in major public galleries. The German Wikipedia article has no relevant sources or anything to suspect the :en version is likely to meet the ARTIST criteria in the near future. A freelance artist who may have many temporary exhibitions in his lifetime may not be notable in an encyclopaedic sense.

The article Gintaras Kazlauskas has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

I find one tangential reference to his work in a book on GNews (just two stories about a lorry driver with the same name) but no matches in GNews. There is no doubt he is a painter and a restorer but the significant impact needed for WP:BIO or WP:ARTIST is unlikely to be addressed in the near future based on the sources available or taking the claims made in the Lithuanian Wikipedia version in good faith.

The article Gintaras Kraujelis has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The article is about a painter of stained-glass windows who has had some exhibitions. There are no matches in GNews or GBooks and is seems unlikely that sources will be available to address WP:ARTIST in the near future. The Lithuanian Wikipedia article gives some context but also fails to address the criteria.

The article Irena Lipienė has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The artist (based on the Lithuanian version) appears to be a commercial stained-glass artist. I find no evidence of notability based no matches in GNews and only incidental mentions in GBooks. There is only one source quoted in the Lithuanian version and that is to a Universal Lithuanian Encyclopedia.

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Antalya Festival requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. CeeGee (talk) 06:21, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

Welcome back!

[edit]

Good news! Good news indeed! Dr. Blofeld is back on deck again! Am so glad to read that you are planning to focus on Burma - it certainly does need (and deserve) much better coverage. I was only there for a week in 1979 (that was all foreigners were allowed to stay at the time) - but just fell in love with the country and the people. Unfortunately, I don't think I have any photos (but will have a search through old boxes of slides when I can find the time) and will try to add a comment or two when I can. But most of all, I just want to say "Hi!" and welcome you back. Cheers, John Hill (talk) 22:59, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

Indonesian regencies

[edit]

I've got all of the regency maps of Sumatra's provinces up on Commons now, and they're mostly deployed on en:wp. I've deployed most of them to any other project that has articles, too. And I'm seeing new articles created on projects such as and at a pretty good clip. I've done the kota maps, too, but they need re-cating... I still need to clean-up about fifty bot-moved tags, and write en:descriptions... West Sumatra is the batch I'm in the middle of, now.

So, I said mostly deployed on en:wp; see {{Jambi}} and {{South Sumatra}}. They're full of redlinks. I started some of the ones in Jambi. If you want to start some new articles, those would be gooduns ;) Cheers, Jack Merridew 23:38, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

nice work. I'll be plugging-away at Riau, next; on Commons and xx:wp, too. I'll make another pass doing infoboxes and lambang, too.

The article Lina Jonikienė has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The article fails to address the WP:ARTIST criteria and the Lithuanian Wikipedia version has no rationale or sources that appear to address the criteria either. Searches on GNews and GBook find tangential mentions (as part of lists of other authors) but nothing to demonstrate the impact needed. It is unlikely that this will be addressed in the near future.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. (talk) 08:59, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

For gods sake blofeld - it is satusuro - I couldnt give a rats what you two (merridew) get up to - I happen to not be currently editing in the Indonesian project at the moment - and I dont happen to have any interest in what you are both up to anyways - its for other editors to judge whether you are improving the project or not - please stop now alledging things I am not up to - I am not the Indonesian project nor are you and merridew - move on - if youre back - do your stuff and leave my name alone - thank you (oh and if you do list every village in Indonesia I am sure someone else will come along fix you up one way or other - it is not my concern anymore) SatuSuro 02:01, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

But you must admit you do generally seem to show a distaste for any new Indonesian articles or anything less than B class quality articles..... - crap, misrepresentation - there are no maintenance minded eds left working in the Indonesian project to do the boring bits - I am simply not doing it anymore - simple as that - just daily watching of http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/User:AlexNewArtBot/IndonesiaSearchResult can bring on hernias when you see the crap coming through - the i refuse to communicate editors of unknown quantity who add tons of pointless soccer stubs and non english english eds who add stubs with no follow up is far more toxic than you or merridew are capable of (at least you guys speak) - I just do not wish to get involved in dealing with large numbers of new regency or other conflagarations with no project tag or no references and dubious category trees (there is a parallel category issue from thelast big addition a year or so ago that no one has even considered) - In the end you and merridew are not really the problem - I just have given up on the crap that goes into the project - real life has far more challenging issues - cheers SatuSuro 00:20, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Sorry - I have said at merridews page and here - I am not engaging in anything currently about Indonesian project issues - try someone else - or even more sensibly the project page - http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Indonesia - much better to try there than try to engage me on the issue - SatuSuro 00:32, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

Sorry man I did not notice you message, but I do not really agree. The average Hindi cinema article is far better. ShahidTalk2me 08:34, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

And you think I would not? But how would you make Mother India into a GA when there's no way to found any essential information about it? There aren't even enough reviews for the film, let alone info about production and filming. That's sad, but that's what we have. Just today I created a page on Kunwara - a Hindi film, but all I found is two reviews from reliable sources on the internet - nothing more. ShahidTalk2me 12:18, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
I'd love to but I'm now having trouble with a guy on the Aishwarya Rai article. Oohh. He added a little credible source stating she is the youngest recepient of the award. I started a talk page discussion on which I mentioned Smita Patil as an example, who was much younger than Rai when she received her award. So what did he do? He just changed the statement to "second youngest"... Ooohh. Using the same source which does not support it at all.
He Adds Raavanan to the lead, mentioning it as a critical and commercial success, while this is not supported in the article. He added two source, one of which is just a fansite to "back up" the claim. He does not even use the talk page, and I'm pretty sure I know this guy from the past.
Dealing with fans is quite annoying. Just see hoe he falsely added Aishwarya's name to the list of 2010 MTV nominees. This is ridiculous. ShahidTalk2me 13:09, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
Great book. But you know which one is my absolute favourite. The one that fascinates and excites me. Complete the sentence: Encyclopedia of _____ ______!! ShahidTalk2me 13:12, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
Fantastic work as always. Blof are you aware of this, the recent AFD, and the subsequent blanking for so-called copyright issues? On the AFD, many people supported BOI and the article was finally kept, but they were not done and claimed that due to the fact that BOI's are educated guesses, it must be checked. What a joke. ShahidTalk2me 14:26, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
Mughal-E-Azam - another classic. ShahidTalk2me 14:58, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

Spectacular work. Blof the imafe of Nargis is not when she shoots her son, BTW, it is the one when she is working in the fields and dragging some cart. Many books, not even about Mother India in particular, feature this image on their cover, that's why I believe it should be in the infobox.

I thought of writing a summary but somehow I find it hard to include everything and everything I write is crap. My last draft was something like:

Mother India is centred by the character of village woman Radha, and tells the story of her struggle to survive against the evil money-lender (and later with her own son...). The film portrays Radha through all her trials and tribulations, showing how she single-handedly raises her sons and works the fields.....

I don't know if it has to be short or not. ShahidTalk2me 11:48, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

The problem is when you try to write a summary for a film that is so historically important, it's hard to find the right words that would do complete justice to it. And this summary still looks missing to me. I think it can be expanded. ShahidTalk2me 12:20, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
I too like her a lot. She was really good as the young Victoria and TDWP. ShahidTalk2me 17:00, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
Hehe man I think after Shania got married you started looking for an alternative. ShahidTalk2me 17:22, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

M.I. and Sholay

[edit]

Okay, I will see what I can do. Sholay was being reviewed, but the guy who was doing it met with an accident, and said he will be out of WP for several months. I don't know what will happen with it now. BollyJeff || talk 16:39, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

I don't think Sholay needs very much; I have been working on it for some time, and the review seemed to be almost complete. However, you are certainly more experienced then me, and I thought that Shriya Saran was in pretty good shape. I am just waiting for some reliable sources to talk about her before re-submitting that one. I think it depends a lot on which reviewer you get too. I have seen GAs using sources that were rejected on that one. However, I have tried to stick with good sources on Sholay. BollyJeff || talk 17:03, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
I made some changes using your provided link; have a look. How do you determine when to use the standard book citations or Google Books citations? And whatever all that other stuff you said was, sure I would like a tutorial :-) BollyJeff || talk 18:12, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
Both IMDB and Bollywood Hungama show a release date of 14 February 1957 for Mother India. You sure about 25 October 1957? Add a source if so. Also, I fixed the sources on Sholay. BollyJeff || talk 20:46, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
[This source] that you used for MI could prove useful for Sholay as well, bit these numbers are far different than other sources. What is going on here? BollyJeff || talk 04:11, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
Can you explain the discrepancy between the gross figure in your book source above, and the figures quoted elsewhere on WP? BollyJeff || talk 03:44, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
I finished the copy edit on Mother India today. You may want to revisit the Themes section. It is long and there is a lot of stuff in there about religion and sexuality that you may want to trim upon re-reading it; then again maybe not. You did a lot of work in like 1 or 2 days; very impressive. When I look at a lean article, I can't even think of what to write about usually. How do you do it? Oh, and I see that someone put Sholay up for a second opinion, so maybe there will be some more action on that soon. BollyJeff || talk 23:56, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

Hello, Dr. Blofeld. You have new messages at Dawynn's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Dawynn (talk) 18:41, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

Hey, I see this is a newly uploaded file- could you please stop using that "standard" rationale? Generic legalese formed into a wall of text is not a useful non-free use rationale- the rationale needs to specifically explain what that image adds to that article. With film screenshots, there's nothing close to an "automatic entitlement" to use, and so you can't just throw anything down and expect it to be OK. As for this particular image, I'm really not seeing what it's adding; it is not immediately obvious why it's so important we see what the actors look like in role. While I'm on the subject, why two posters are needed is not clear (if the second is particularly iconic, lead with that one instead) and it's rare that the cover of a soundtrack is going to be justified in an article about a film- in this one, doubly so, as it's mostly redundant to the poster anyway. J Milburn (talk) 19:27, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I don't mean to patronise you, but you make a lot of common mistakes about our NFCC in your response. I will respond to each of your points in turn:
  1. "the main poster is the original english version which we should always try to use" It's a good choice for the one to use if none of them are of particularly significance. If one is particularly significant, use that. That's not particularly controversial.
  2. "I did not add the poster after removing it from the infobox. Shahid added it on grounds that the image of Nargis shooting her own son it one of Hindi cinema's iconic moments and should be represented" I've no idea what the first part means, but as for the second part: The fact something is significant does not mean that a non-free image is automatically justified. If it's significant, talk about it. If a picture is needed, use a picture. "It needs a picture" simply does not follow from "it's significant".
  3. "I did not add a new rationale I simply copied it form the old image' I thought this image was much better." Copying rationales is hardly a good idea. If you upload an image, you are responsible for making sure the rationale is sound.
  4. "album covers are generally accepted in GA and FA articles on Hindi films because the soundtracks to the films are often as important or even more important to the film itself. See Dhoom 2 for example" There are no special rules for Hindi films- please take another look at the non-free content guidelines. If the cover of the soundtrack is important, add some sourced commentary about it. If the soundtrack itself is really that significant, give it its own article- I would have no objection to an album cover being used there.
  5. "one image should be acceptable at least to illustrate an important scene in the film or concept in relation to the text which I believe the images in the themes section meet" Basically, that's not how it works. Again, the fact a scene is "important" does not suddenly mean a non-free image is justified, and the "there's only one" argument holds no water- one image can still be too many. Take the screenshot as an example- this shows a woman and two children sitting on the floor. What, precisely, is this showing that so urgently needs to be shown?
  6. "if you are not happy with the rationale you can always alter it yourself and show me which rationale I should actually be using" Not how it works. It's your responsibility to provide an adequate rationale, and I can't just point you to one that works- the point is that one needs to be written specifically for that image and that article- you can't just copy some central one. As I said, I can't write that rationale myself, as I am really not seeing what the image is adding.
I hope this clarifies a few points. I'm not saying that the article needs to be stripped of non-free images (though perhaps removing most would be the best solution) I'm just saying it needs some attention... J Milburn (talk) 20:18, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
Why not just go with the movie poster that was there already and shows the iconic scene? Which BTW, is not her shooting anyone, but plowing the fields. BollyJeff || talk 20:39, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
Doc, I can understand your frustration (I've been on the wrong end of our NFCC myself) and I appreciate the fact you're making an effort to minimise the use. However, I completely agree with Jeff that we could kill two birds with one stone by using the movie poster with the iconic scene on- we are agreed that a poster is helpful, and you feel strongly that that a visualisation of that scene is helpful, so why not, as per NFCC#3a ("Multiple items of non-free content are not used if one item can convey equivalent significant information") use the poster with the iconic scene? (As for your question about templates, I would strongly recommend Template:Non-free use rationale, but, to reiterate, I simply can't point you towards a rationale that you can base yours upon- the "purpose" parametre, the important one, is going to need to be absolutely specific to that image and that article. A fairly good example of a rationale would perhaps be File:Flow game screenshot.jpg (I just expanded it- I was looking at it earlier as it is at FAC at the moment) but, as I say, screenshots are not something suited to more "template" rationales (in fact, a template was recently deleted for just this reason). J Milburn (talk) 23:05, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
I think your problem is essentially with our copyright policies/NFCC, not with any particular user. There's simply a different way of looking at things- while we're playing by "different rules", as it were, it's going to be difficult to come to an agreement. J Milburn (talk) 11:14, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
No, agreed, and I have written film articles myself- Dustbin Baby (film) is well illustrated because I was lucky enough to get free images. However, the "bland" argument has been rejected again and again; we do not use non-free content to decorate. Sometimes, yes, a single screenshot (or more) is going to be useful, but it's simply not true that this is always the case. J Milburn (talk) 11:26, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Presuming there is no conceivable free media, it would be acceptable in Man with No Name under the NFCC, but it's difficult to see how it is justified in Eastwood's own article. J Milburn (talk) 11:28, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Like I say, I've done it myself, though, admittedly, it wasn't the biggest company. Remember though that there is a big difference between "Wikipedia can use the picture" and "we release the picture under a free license". The former has repeatedly been rejected as being not free enough. From my own experience, I've seen companies are often willing to help, but often falter at the point of a free release, in part because it means wrangling with copyright- working out who they need to contact, contacting them, getting them to say exactly what they need to, etc etc. J Milburn (talk) 11:47, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi Blofeld, I think you may have misunderstood the Italian Wikipedia's claim (I believe they are claiming only for their country's side of things—like how certain works are only PD in US and not elsewhere, and vice versa); Fistful of Dollars is a US work, not Italian (it registered its copyright—which is equivalent to publication—in US before debuting in Italy). Please see further details at the PUF entry. Jappalang (talk) 01:58, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

As explained, a work enjoys US copyright regardless of whoever created it (the process only demands the registration). I believe J. Milburn overlooked this detail when he was going through that GA (I pinged him to discuss his thoughts). Unfortunately, this also means File:Eastwood Good Bad and the Ugly.png is of the same fate (although the copyright claimant is different because Leone changed producers throughout that "trilogy"). That file is now at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files/2011 February 24#File:Eastwood Good Bad and the Ugly.png. Jappalang (talk) 11:19, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
Sorry to bother you again, but File:Clint Eastwood man with no name.jpg is a copyright violation without the permission of the copyright holder of the film it was derived from (see original screenshot here). Jappalang (talk) 11:40, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

As with the above please see more deltion discussions on your uploads. Soundvisions1 (talk) 14:07, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Thanks on Arablit

[edit]

Hi, really appreciate your help with the Zayd Mutee' Dammaj novels. I found this treasure trove of info on contemporary Arab literature in the Banipal website.. http://www.banipal.co.uk/contributors/ .. there's over 600 author mini-profiles in this index from Morocco all the way to Syria/Jordan and the Gulf. It's the source of the Yemeni writers template as well. I'm doing a few of these every day, but naturally all help would be HUGELY appreciated. And yes, WP is nowhere NEAR complete! Any good sources for his films? Lugnuts (talk) 13:32, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

Cheers Doc. Not as nice as the Czech film database site though! Lugnuts (talk) 14:25, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

citation

[edit]

Im trying to use the "easier" form of citation (please see the expansion I did over at Great Pyramid of Cholula) as I finish expanding Xochimilco I have a question. Are all sources listed at the bottom with notations above or just books and stuff with authors? If its all, Im going to have lots of "fun" with the in line citations. I have a lot of web pages with no author and several of these with the same title and several sources (newspaper articles) written by the same guys.Thelmadatter (talk) 20:31, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

I sandboxed what I have done so far here User:Thelmadatter/sandbox Assuming I should list all sources the same way. I have not worked on the coding for in line citations yet.Thelmadatter (talk) 21:27, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
But what about web pages and other sources? I did what I think I should do with the first webpage I listed in the bibliography.Thelmadatter (talk) 21:34, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
Ah... OK I see now.Thelmadatter (talk) 21:46, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
Expansion all done. Could use some tidying up. Ill try to do some in the morning. Beer awaits right now!Thelmadatter (talk) 03:22, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

Generating cite book from ISBN or Google Books URL

[edit]

I saw your suggestion on my talk page. We did discuss implementing that as part of ProveIt, so someone could enter an ISBN (or similar) and have the rest of the Add Reference tab auto-loaded. Technically, this would probably require a JSONP API. Feel free to file a bug with information about how you think this should work. Superm401 - Talk 06:08, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

Barnstar

[edit]

Dear Dr. Blofeld:

In my modest capacity as a new article reviewer and unofficial member of WikiProject Argentina, I'd like to bestow a Barnstar of National Merit upon you for your many contributions to a variety of Argentine-related subjects.

The breadth of subjects covered by your tens of thousands of new articles is astonishing, and truly serves as an inspiration to lazier Wikipedians such as myself. Editors from many other WikiProjects owe you barnstars, as well.

On behalf of Wikipedia's Argentine and Argentine-American readers and editors, thank you.

All the best, Sherlock4000 (talk) 21:46, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

More Mangroves?

[edit]

Something tells me Bonny Estuary and Wouri estuary would be quite similar. There are some resemblances between Oko Jumbo and King Bell as well. I may take a look at it. Thanks. Aymatth2 (talk) 20:23, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

Chinese in Mexico

[edit]

Hey. Someone made some, lets say, interesting edits to the Chinese immigration to Mexico articles, including moving it to Chinese Mexicans. The guy seemed to be under the impression that there are 70,000+ chinese in Mexico by adding the immigrant numbers since the 19th century. I dont think "Chinese Mexicans" is a really more accurate title. But I dont know how to "undo" a move. Can you help me on this one? BTW, film is not my thing. I very rarely watch movies anymore.Thelmadatter (talk) 02:34, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

thanks for your help. Thelmadatter (talk) 15:50, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
