'Corning Art+Feminism 2020

' is an Art+Feminism edit-a-thon hosted by The Rakow Research Library (CMoG) on Saturday, March 14, 2020, focused on improving articles related to women working in glass.

Wikipedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors were women. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not: content is skewed by the lack of representation from women. Let’s change that!

We invite people of all gender identities and expressions to participate, particularly transgender and cisgender women.

  • When: Saturday, March 14, 2020, 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM EST
  • Where: The Rakow Research Library of The Corning Museum of Glass (website), 5 Museum Way, Corning, NY, 14830 (map, free parking available at the Library)
  • Cost: Free
  • Participants:
    • RSVPs encouraged, but drop-ins are welcome. Come for an hour or stay for the whole event. Please create a Wikipedia account before the event.‎
    • No Wikipedia editing experience necessary. Optional training sessions will be provided and help and reference materials will be available throughout the event.
    • Attendees will be provided with light refreshments.
  • What to Bring: Attendees should bring their own laptops and power cords, if possible.

The Corning Art+Feminism 2020 edit-a-thon aims to:

  1. Build Wikipedia editing skills through tutorials and basic edits.
  2. Improve coverage of cis and transgender women, non-binary people, feminism, and the arts, especially related to glass as a medium, on Wikipedia.
  3. Build a community of Wikipedians interested in editing articles related to the art, history, and science of glass.

Remember, a new Wikipedia article should be backed up by at least 5 reliable sources. Please also consider notability when creating new articles.

WikiProject: Women in Red has created a guide, Simple Rules for Creating Women's Biographies, that may be useful when starting a new article. The biographies for living persons policy and Guide to Writing Wikipedia Pages for Notable Women in Computing (applicable to any biography) are two other guides with good advice.

Connect to WiFi

Participants can connect to the "Rakow Guest" or "GlassApp+ Free WiFi" networks while on the museum campus. Please bring your own laptop or mobile device, if possible. A limited number of laptops and tablets will be available.
