Staff at Levy Library at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai are hosting a private meeting for staff to participate in Wikipedia training.

Goals

Participants in the training will develop the following skills:

  1. Be more able to present positive and critical perspectives about the place of Wikipedia's health content in the digital information environment
  2. Basic Wikipedia editing
  3. Basic social media communication through Wikipedia - in particular, be able to direct a question to the medical forum in Wikipedia

Before the training

  • Highly recommended Be ready to bring to the event an academic paper or other reliable source of information to cite in support of the information you will add to Wikipedia. You will use Wikipedia to distribute information from this source. Try to bring the highest quality most reputable source you can find for the information.
  • Create a Wikipedia account, if you do not have one already.
  • After creating a Wikipedia account, please register for the event by joining the program
  • If you wish, take Wikipedia's own 30-minute online training and tour at The Wikipedia Adventure.

At the training

0:00-0:05 - Introductions
0:05-0:10 - Review of action plan - (1) identify fact to share and source to cite (2) identify a relevant Wikipedia article into which to place that fact (3) place fact into article
0:10-0:45 - Participants will have the Wikipedia editing experience; demos and support are offered mostly to individuals
0:45-1:00 - Break, group discussion, demos
1:00-1:45 - Wikipedia editing
1:45-2:00 - Wrap up
2:00-3:00 - Experience is ended, however, this padded period is available if anyone wants to talk further or edit more
