Dotecodegh blocked

Hello, The Anome, I helped Dotcodegh create a wikipedia account about two days ago, only to find out today that the account has been blocked. I could not understand the reason stated and I was wondering if you could clarify that to me here. Thank you Kinvidia (talk) 10:25, 1 March 2021 (UTC)

@Kinvidia: In the context of .gh being the country code for Ghana, and the editor editing about Ghana, "Dotecodegh" can be read as "Dotcode Ghana", which is the name of a company, and editors are not allowed to edit with names which suggest they are a company. Note that they are not hard-blocked, and can easily create another account; or by following the instructions in the notice, they can appeal the block or ask for the account to be renamed. Would they like to do so? -- The Anome (talk) 20:51, 1 March 2021 (UTC)

Thank you very much for the clarification The Anome. Kinvidia (talk) 02:23, 2 March 2021 (UTC)

The article Tomasz Winnicki (chemist) has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this biography of a living person will be deleted after seven days unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp/dated}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. A tag has been placed on Category:Honorifics in the United States requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! Misuse of notaforum

I am concerned that your use of notaforum on the talk page of ANOM might be perceived as abusive. The query by the IP clearly was politically motivated, but it was responded to correctly and was in no danger of becoming an extensive off-topic discussion. My question was directed towards improving the article, as it seeks clarification on how the authorities can set up a trap prior to obtaining a warrant. Perhaps you meant to use notaforum on the other IP question? In any case, since none of these sections were devolving into chats, I urge you to undo your edit. Abductive (reasoning) 21:06, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

I've moved your comment out of the collapse box, per your request. My reason for putting it in the box in the first place is that it seemed to be inviting other editors to speculate about warrantless tapping without providing any evidence either for or against the hypothesis, and thus seemed not to have any possibility of leading to improvement of the article. -- The Anome (talk) 21:16, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

Junior contributors comment completion rate across all participating Wikipedias
When newcomers had the Reply tool and tried to post on a talk page, they were more successful at posting a comment. (Source)

Earlier this year, the Editing team ran a large study of the Reply Tool. The main goal was to find out whether the Reply Tool helped newer editors communicate on wiki. The second goal was to see whether the comments that newer editors made using the tool needed to be reverted more frequently than comments newer editors made with the existing wikitext page editor.

The key results were:

  • Newer editors who had automatic ("default on") access to the Reply tool were more likely to post a comment on a talk page.
  • The comments that newer editors made with the Reply Tool were also less likely to be reverted than the comments that newer editors made with page editing.

These results give the Editing team confidence that the tool is helpful.

Looking ahead

The team is planning to make the Reply tool available to everyone as an opt-out preference in the coming months. This has already happened at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.

The next step is to resolve a technical challenge. Then, they will deploy the Reply tool first to the Wikipedias that participated in the study. After that, they will deploy it, in stages, to the other Wikipedias and all WMF-hosted wikis.

You can turn on "Discussion Tools" in Beta Features now. After you get the Reply tool, you can change your preferences at any time in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion.

Hello The Anome,

I noticed your list of important articles here and noticed that it hasn't been updated since 2008. A lot has changed since then, and I was wondering if you could look over it to see if it needs to be updated. Interstellarity (talk) 15:41, 18 July 2021 (UTC)

@Interstellarity: Thanks for reminding me of that! I think the list has served its purpose, and certainly shows how Wikipedia has achived almost complete coverage of these basic concepts, but I think I'll keep it around for now in its current form. I might consider returning to the "base article" concept some time in the future. -- The Anome (talk) 08:10, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a club, society, or group that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Coordinates by MOS

Hi, after I noticed Special:Diff/1043162131 I went ahead and added the missing coordinates through {{coord}}. Kindly review and rewrite it per WP:MOS as I am not familiar with the enwiki peculiarities. Thanks! Gikü (talk) 12:58, 13 September 2021 (UTC)

@Gikü: That looks absolutely fine. I've edited it slightly to reduce the precision of the lat/long values, as more that five digits after the decimal place is generally considered to be overprecision, since five digits suffice to specify the position to a precision of about 1 metre. -- The Anome (talk) 13:12, 13 September 2021 (UTC)

@1234qwer1234qwer4: It's an error in the category-matching heuristics that produce the {{coord missing}} candidates; it's confusing military divisions with this kind of division. I'll add some more heuristics to catch and block this special case. -- The Anome (talk) 14:13, 24 September 2021 (UTC)

I've just created a list: User:The Anome/geotagged divisions. It's not exhaustive, but that should get most of them. Note that military divisions which have a fixed location can validly have coordinates, so they need to be reviewed individually. -- The Anome (talk) 13:39, 25 September 2021 (UTC)

You should not remove other users comments (as you did here [[109]]).Slatersteven (talk) 13:18, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

@Slatersteven: Holy shit. This was, of course, entirely unintentional. This is not the first time this has happened, and I've tried to find out why it seems to be happening just to me. I'm now convinced this is something to do with how the latest version of the editor is caching edit state. I notice that using the back button on hitting an edit conflict (which is what I've been doing) is losing the most recent contribution, and editing that copy thus overwrites it, even if I've selected not keeping my version on the pop-up. Re-loading the page, rather than hitting the back button, seems to make things work properly.

I've restored your comment; please, please let me know if this happens again; I'm as pissed off with it as you are. -- The Anome (talk) 13:31, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

Over my 16 years I have encountered these undetected edit conflicts on several but rare occasions. It seems the software just fails to notice and edit conflict from time to time and lets an edit just clobber the previous one. HighInBC Need help? Just ask. 13:33, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
It used to happen to me, then I realised that what causes is is when there is an edit conflict, and rather than just start from scratch you instead use the go back bottom and then resubmit.Slatersteven (talk) 13:50, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
That may cause it, but it can happen without doing that because it happens to me sometimes and I never do that. HighInBC Need help? Just ask. 13:55, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
