Pachyrhinosaurus

[edit]

Yes, P. lakustai is the unicorn species. It was named last summer. The unicorn horn had been known for years, though. ArthurWeasley named and uploaded his image before this species was named. Another user has also notified him of this. J. Spencer (talk) 15:59, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Spotty11222. Just to let you know, I declined the speedy-delete that you suggested for this article. It appears to be a notable card game. Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 22:50, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Otodus obliquus

Hi. Re Talk:Otodus obliquus#Requested move, in case you don't already know, to show a change of mind it is usual to strike out the old vote and add the new one, like this:

I've adjusted the column widths (see talk page) does it look any better? Abyssal (talk) 13:31, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It still looks the same to me. It's just that my eyes aren't what they used to be, and I can hardly read them unless I zoom in manually. It doesn't matter, just a little comment. --Spotty11222 (talk) 22:22, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Hurdia

Hi Spotty11222, thanks for your note on my talkpage.

Having looked at your original unexplained edit to Wildfire and your explained edit to Fire, followed by your explained revert to Wildfire (and the note on my talkpage), I'm not fully convinced that 'History' is a better section title than 'Origin', but at this point I will not revert your changes.

The relevant Fire and Wildfire articles talk about the 'fire tetrahedron' - oxygen, fuel, heat and a chain reaction are all needed for a fire to take place and continue. The History/Origins sections discuss the build up of the world's oxygen concentration, caused by flora (a fuel provided that the oxygen level is sufficient); and then the fossil record of charcoal (a residue of previous fires). If the section titles 'History' or 'Origin' are to be used, it would be better if they were 'History of fire (wildfire)' or 'Origin of fire (wildfire)', but wikipedia MoS does not like the article title (fire/wildfire, as appropriate) to appear in the section title, so we are stuck with 'History' or 'Origin'. However, the sections are really about the development of the world's atmosphere so as to support (oxygen-breathing) life and as a consequence giving rise to fires. For this reason I don't think that 'History' is any better than 'Origins'. A suitably brief section title along the lines of 'Development of suitable environmental conditions' is needed. At present, I've not yet found a suitable title.Pyrotec (talk) 18:23, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I've change both section titles to 'Fossil record'. Thanks for comming up with a consise section title; I was struggling somewhat.Pyrotec (talk) 16:00, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pelagic thresher image

[edit]

I removed this image [1] of the pelagic thresher that you uploaded because it's a duplicate of this image [2], which is copyrighted by wildlife photographer Doug Perrine. If you are Doug Perrine and hold the copyright then I apologize and could you contribute more images? If not, then we can't use it in the article. -- Yzx (talk) 23:58, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Glad to see this resolved. Thanks for the prompt reply. -- Yzx (talk) 00:13, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion Concerning Iniopterygians

[edit]

You think it would be better to redirect Iniopterigians to "Iniopterygiformes" than the other way around?--Mr Fink (talk) 03:27, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I just figured that Iniopterigians is too, shall we say, uncommon a common name for them, and that it would be for the best to put them under the taxon name. Now if I could only identify the iniopterygians I've already drawn.

Edit summaries

[edit]

Hi Spotty,

Can you use an edit summary when tagging articles with citation needed tags? It makes it a lot easier to see what you're doing without having to compare the diffs. I'd like to keep the dinosaur articles relatively free of maintenance tags; I can do that by adding references where needed, but won't see the tags unless you use an edit summary. Best, Firsfron of Ronchester 22:34, 5 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

[edit]

Thanks for moving the Solitaire article back, I thought only admins had the power to move articles to titles that had already been created? That's what it tells me when I try, at least. FunkMonk (talk) 15:21, 7 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: italics

[edit]

I have never seen any other article, let alone featured content, use such a mechanism. There's really no point to it, and I have to wonder how its implementation holds up on older browsers. --Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 13:28, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

And as also pointed out, while the scientific chaps might want it in their taxoboxes, I have not seen any sort of consensus for doing it to other media. I have to agree with many of the posters, it looks damned poor due to the san-serif font. Seeing as apparently the film and video game communities as a whole have not been notified of these discussions, I see no reason to carry it forward. --Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 17:06, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I would suggest starting a discussion at a central location (I guess VP) and then inviting the wikiprojects to give their feedback (WP:VG, WP:FILMS, WP:MUSIC, WP:BOOKS, WP:TV off the top of my head, but there are probably many more). --Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 20:09, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

For your dedicated work on Wikipedia:WikiProject Dinosaurs, I hereby award you this dinosaur barnstar. Thanks so much for your efforts to improve dinosaur articles. Firsfron of Ronchester 08:22, 18 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I think there's a little more to add, and if you don't object, I could submit the DYK? I was thinking of something like ... Limusaurus is the first herbivorous theropod ceratosaur to be discovered in Eastern Asia. What do you think? --Spotty 11222 10:29, 18 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
More can certainly be added to Limusaurus. Although I have no objections to submission of a DYK, Arthur did the majority of the work on this article (and also created it), so he should receive the credit for the DYK no matter who submit the actual request. He was actually talking about someone submitting a DYK for this article, so I think he will have no objections to a DYK. Firsfron of Ronchester 14:56, 18 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tagging

[edit]

Hi Spotty,

In this edit, you've tagged an article indicating that its lead is too short. However, you could easily expand this lead yourself, summarizing the existing material. I'm not a big fan of maintanence tags, especially where the remedy is so easy. Please consider improving the article instead of adding a tag that will just sit there, possibly for several years. The tag won't improve the article. Best wishes and happy editing, Firsfron of Ronchester 13:48, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Collecting_shark_teeth_in_the_feild.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 14:21, 29 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Retiring?

[edit]

Heya Spotty,

Are you really retiring? What happened? Firsfron of Ronchester 19:44, 26 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm so sorry to see you go. I also hope you achieve your dream of becoming a paleontologist (don't listen to your parents, and follow your own dreams).
As far as your question goes, I became interested in paleontology as a kid, at about age 5. My cousin gave me a box of around 100 little dinosaur models (this was circa 1980, when they were still usually depicted in the old 'tripod' pose), and I'd spend hours arranging and rearranging them on cardboard platforms in my own 'dinosaur museum'. The saurischians couldn't be anywhere near the ornithischians, I recall. ;)
In 1999, I leaped at the chance to study Rana subaquavocalis in its natural environment, as part of my college studies. Amphibians are dying out at an alarming rate, and may well become the fossils of the future. The work I did on R. subaquavocalis, mostly collecting census and temperature data, went into some important papers and expanded my knowledge of herpetology. In 2005, when I saw the huge, very red List of dinosaurs with a thousand red links, I thought, "I can help fill this out; I've got tons of sources". So I began working on WP:DINO.
I will absolutely take a look at Feathered dinosaurs, though I try to stay out of that area. It was great working with you, Spotty, and I wish you the best of luck with the Fossil Wiki. Firsfron of Ronchester 21:01, 26 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:CPT-1980 unidentified allosaurid.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:CPT-1980 unidentified allosaurid.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page.
