Until I see a source saying it's not, this will remain

The burden of proof is on editors adding/restoring material. I'm glad to see you provide a reference for the claim (JLDS before, during and after my membership made dubious claims about its history) -- but, "it stays unless you disprove it" is the exact opposite of how Wikipedia operates. --EEMIV (talk) 18:52, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I wasn't saying one can just add material he believes is true without a source and expect it to stay. But what you did was remove sourced material until it was verified by "a third party" when no such verifying third party exists on the topic. Omnibus (talk) 19:08, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The claim about the Jefferson Society was "sourced" to the Society's web site -- given that it is a superlative claim about the Society's longevity, the source has a conflict of interest and it was inappropriate to cite at Wikipedia. And as you demonstrated a bit later, the University has substantiated the claim (still dubious given that JLDS is part of UVa, but sufficiently removed for the time being). You can probably find more information in Mr. Jefferson's University by Virginius Dabney. If a third-party source doesn't exist for something, then the claim should not be included. --EEMIV (talk) 19:22, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It depends on the entity making the claim. If I could reference something extremely notable from the MIT website about the school, and there was no third-party source that disagreed (and no third-party source that agreed) it would be, and is, worthy of being on Wikipedia. There are numerous examples of this on many university pages. But, the Jeff Society is not MIT... I didn't know about their supposed "reputation for lying" until you told me... just another reason the Wash is the superior society I suppose. Anyway, this is all a hypothetical argument at this point. Omnibus (talk) 20:38, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:Scott.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Scott.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Mike London.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status and its source. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously.

If you did not create this work entirely yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. You will also need to state under what licensing terms it was released. Please refer to the image use policy to learn what files you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. The page on copyright tags may help you to find the correct tag to use for your file.

Please add this information by editing the image description page. If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please also check any other files you may have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 12:05, 16 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Student housing at the University of Virginia

[edit]

The article Student housing at the University of Virginia has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Yes, the housing exists, but there is no indication why it is NOTABLE. Existing isn't enough to justify an article, and none of the sources deal with the concept of student housing as a whole, so there is no significant coverage of the exact topic.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Student housing at the University of Virginia is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Student housing at the University of Virginia until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. I, JethroBT drop me a line 23:26, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your repeated removal of an image on the UVA page

[edit]

Hi Omnibus, when you first removed the image quite a while ago, you objected to its technical quality and mentioned you would replace it with a better one. That never happened. (Talk about good faith assumptions!) Instead, subsequently the two only other African-Americans on the page -- Boyd Tinsley and Julian Bond -- were also removed. This behavior certainly justified, especially in light of UVA's racist history, my suspicion that an editor's personal prejudices were driving such action. When I reinstated the photos of Tinsley, Bond and Dove, you proceeded to remove the photo of Dove with the president under a changing set of technical reasons, but never returned to your original announcement to replace it with a better quality image. This then, in today's hostile political climate especially against President Obama and together with your seemingly anti-Black photo eliminations, led me to the logical conclusion that there might be a rather sinister motive at play. I do not mind you replacing the image of Rita Dove and the president with a better one, if you can find one that's in the public domain. Until then I will continue to undo removals of the image. Fredv (talk) 06:45, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Fredv, I appreciate your talking with me on this page about the issue. Without the Dove image, there are only two post-1950 closeups on the page. Kathryn Thornton, the astronaut faculty member, and Boyd Tinsley. This is 50% African American representation and 50% female representation at a 10% African American and 55% female school, surely you are not offended by that? Also, Julian Bond is still on the page under "Prominent Faculty". I believe that we can add one to this list, and I will add Dove there soon (making 33% of the "Prominent Faculty" representation African American as well). Also, along the lines of Wikipedia: Assume Good Faith, that is a good document to start with as to why you shouldn't make assumptions about motives for other people, but especially that you shouldn't voice them. It often leads to a toxic environment where editors find it increasingly difficult to find common ground. I'll leave the Dove image as you have placed it for now before I edit the faculty box, just changing the size as appropriate. Thank you very much. Omnibus (talk) 13:42, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
EDIT: Looks like you have already found the appropriate sizing for now. Thanks! Omnibus (talk) 13:44, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Omnibus, sounds good. Someone had also removed Boyd Tinsley as well as the "Prominent Faculty" bar, both of which I then reinstated. Actually, "Prominent Faculty" would probably benefit from a renaming as "Prominent Former Faculty", or better yet, from a redesign. And if there's a bit more space, I'd suggest adding a photo of Larry Sabato. No doubt, Sabato and Dove are the most prominent and highly acclaimed current faculty members at UVA. (Representation here is not really a question of racial and gender percentages but more one of national and international visibility.) No matter -- thanks for leaving the Dove-Obama image in place. State usage

[edit]

Hi. Apologies if I came across badly. You are obviously a hugely experienced editor and know your way round this place better than me. I was just curious when it became mandatory to include states? It seems especially unnecessary in somewhere as famous as NYC with the state also sharing the same name. I've seen Oxfordshire removed from those from Oxford. New York City, New York...I dunno just seems abit repetitive and not what folk think of first (being from the UK i think of NYC, US). You can change my edit back if I'm not making much of a case here. RyanTQuinn (talk) 18:41, 14 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That was actually rather enlightening, thank you. Since the subject (David Bowie) is from England, it may make sense that his article would leave out the state. It looks irregular to Americans this way, but since both you and John are British perhaps it's a cultural divide and should be used sans state. Much as it should probably use British spellings. Thanks much! You made a good case. Omnibus (talk) 19:08, 14 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal for a page

[edit]

Dear Omnibus,

As previously you have contributed to Wikipedia in regards to financial articles, would you, please, consider writing an article on Creamfinance? It is a global financial services company that provides personal finance products in emerging markets. The company was ranked as the second fastest-growing company in Europe in 2016. Creamfinance is employing over 220 people and operating in 7 countries both within and outside of Europe – Latvia, Poland, Czech Republic, Georgia, Denmark and Mexico with an IT office in Austria.

I believe it corresponds to the Wikipedia notability rules as it has been talked about in legitimate third party sources.

If you wish I have put together a first draft for the page and can send it you.

According to Wikipedia guidelines I want to underline that I am a Project Manager at Golin Riga and I have been approached by Creamfinance to help with their representation on Wikipedia. Aozolins-golin-riga (talk) 08:38, 28 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Anonymous in Connecticut,
You're simply wrong about not being able to "win" an award. Check Merriam-Webster here. The prime example given for English usage of the word award is:
"A film that has won several awards."
See also the Google graph I linked you showing that books published since about 1993 are more likely to say someone "won" an award than that they were "given" an award. You were right once, but not for at least 20-25 years.
At any rate, happy editing!

The file File:Thomas Jefferson Signature.gif has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

unused, low-res, no obvious use

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Capitalization of "47th vice president" at Joe Biden

[edit]

Hi Ominibus, I see that you capitalized "47th vice president" at Joe Biden on the good-faith assumption that was correct and that it fixed the link. You may not be aware of MOS:JOBTITLES, which explains that when "Vice President" stands alone, it is a title and capitalized, but in other uses—especially when modified, as with "47th"—"vice president" becomes a common noun and is spelled with lower case. Cheers, HopsonRoad (talk) 19:17, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, that is useful. And explains why the wikilink is not capitalized but the very same words are in the article it links to. Omnibus (talk) 20:09, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Virginia Cavaliers, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Cross country (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Discretionary Sanctions Alert

[edit]

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have shown interest in pseudoscience and fringe science. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

(Zero issues with your edits. I am just hitting everyone on the Jenny McCarthy page that hasn't received a pseudoscience and fringe science discretionary sanctions alert in the last year) --Guy Macon (talk) 00:46, 18 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Virginia

[edit]

Understood you are activley refactoring and I am staying out for now. Some general commments:

  • MOS:LEAD says "The lead serves as an introduction to the article and a summary of its most important contents." There are now numerous elements which are not present in the article body.
  • MOS:LEADLENGTH says as guidline "Three or four paragraphs" for an article of this size. It is currently 6 paragraphs.
  • Some book citations lack a Template:Page needed parameter; Note re MOS:LEAD, the same content is not present in the article body
  • Multiple game scores are not typically presented in this location

Cheers, UW Dawgs (talk) 18:08, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! These are all good points and tips I will work on. Specifically, I intend to: (a) remove two of those three scores now; (b) revisit the three-volume book I've cited early next week for further information and page citations; (c) soon detail the body [which I've yet to touch] next week after finishing the lede; and (d) thereafter transition some of this information down to the body to make a shorter four-paragraph lede. I've never worked on the football articles of UVA before (strictly basketball) but will try to make this article as comprehensive and succinct as possible over time. Information icon Hi Omnibus! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor at Lee Zeldin that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a very specific definition on Wikipedia – it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism. Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if it only concerns a single word. Please see Help:Minor edit for more information. Thank you. I was at the article on the subject of the Castle Doctrine and saw you altered the link to the statute cited and wish to state that it is YOU sir that are incorrect. It's both. I'll update the article. In your dwelling you can use deadly force if (1) not the initial aggressor [30.15]; or (2) believe the person to be burglarizing or committing arson [30.20]. A tag has been placed on Template:University of Virginia faculty box requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, at Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2016_November_11#Template:University_of_Virginia_faculty_box. When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discussion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. It had 1 vote to delete, based on a reason that no longer existed (unused and unfilled with images). Obviously that doesn't apply here or anymore. Omnibus (talk) 18:03, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
But despite you being totally misguided about that second comment, I see you found a way to not break the page by removing the template. So, no worries as it seems unnecessary. I was just going with what the nice Cornell University page did. Omnibus (talk) 18:06, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response. Those Cornell templates should be part of the article as well. Templates are generally not used to store article content; see the template namespace guidelines, the first of which is generally interpreted to mean that relatively simple wikitext without template parameters should live in the article itself, not in a separate template. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:04, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
