Welcome!

Well this looks to be my Talk page, I'm not often on Wikipedia, but I do like to potch around and fix things that I spot are wrong, or otherwise just fix broken links and inconsistancies. I've not created much yet as that seems a bit tougher, I may get to it yet however EdwardLane (talk) 16:15, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

No Fit State Circus (or "Nofit" or "NoFit"!)
[edit]I moved this to what seems to be the correct title, "NoFit ...", then went to create a redirect to this from "Nofit..." and found a long-existing article there! The original editor was at fault in not creating redirects from the likely mis-spellings, but you should have taken perhaps a bit more care yourself too as their own website calls them "NoFit" without the space. I've turned your article into a redirect to the existing one, but you might like to add your material to that one. Redirects from likely variations of titles are very useful: not only for the reader looking for the article, but for the editor about to create a duplicate article as you've just done. It's a common problem! Happy editing. PamD (talk) 13:56, 12 April 2011 (UTC)
- PS It's a brilliant title, however it's spelled, isn't it! PamD (talk) 13:58, 12 April 2011 (UTC)
- @PamD: - wow only just saw this message 9 years later - and yes it's a good name I'll have a look when I get a moment and see if there are any archived remnants of the old badly spelled versions to merge in EdwardLane (talk) 14:40, 21 October 2020 (UTC)
This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Plymouth ironworks, and it appears to include material copied directly from http://www.alangeorge.co.uk/plymouthironworks.htm.
It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.
If substantial content is duplicated and it is not public domain or available under a compatible license, it will be deleted. - I removed the copyright violation. Please see WP:COPYPASTE for more guidance. Wikipedia takes copyright violations seriously and persistent offenders will be blocked from editing.--NortyNort (Holla) 12:32, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
- No problem. There is nothing wrong with enthusiasm! I was the same way when I first started editing; I uploaded a bunch of copyrighted photos. There are a bunch of guidelines and rules here but once you get used to it, it gets much easier and better. If you ever have any questions, let me know on my talk page.--NortyNort (Holla) 01:05, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

Hello EdwardLane and welcome to Wikipedia. You happened to add a comment on a page which is reserved for use in arbitration. Can I suggest that you undo that comment? That may look like a talk page, but it's actually an archive for arbitration cases and amendments. Let me know if I can answer any questions. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 20:16, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

1911 Sarez earthquake nominated at DYK
[edit]Hi Edward, I've gone ahead and expanded the article using what I'd worked up in my sandbox. Looking back at your original version I realise that I haven't left a lot - I've tried to explain why on the article talk page. I've nominated the article at DYK, with both of us as authors; unfortunately I will be away (not that unfortunately I'm on holiday in Iceland) for just over a week, so any queries about this nomination are likely to end up with you, sorry about that. I will be logging in on an occasional basis, so hopefully if anything turns up that you can't deal with, I will be able to answer it within a few days. Cheers, Mikenorton (talk) 18:00, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
Volcanism category additions
[edit]Hi, I've reverted your addition of Category:Volcanism to those three article, since each contained an eponymous category that already featured "Volcanism" as a parent category. We do not add parent categories (those that other in-use categories are already a part of) to articles, since that is redundant. Let me know if you have any questions. — Huntster (t @ c) 22:39, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
- Fair enough - I didn't spot the parent category thing, sorry about that :) EdwardLane (talk) 22:48, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

re: Geology talkpost
[edit]HI seem to have stumbled upon a couple of your requests Wikipedia:Requested_articles/Natural_sciences#Geologic_time_periods so I've added some comment, hope that's helpful.EdwardLane (talk) 15:57, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks but no Thanks. Not trying to be offensive here, but initial reaction was your response is not even close to the mark -- a rather "young-studentish" response--doing the least amount possible hoping like hell the scoring will get a pass! Since that is unlikely—and I thank you for the courtesy of posting my talk page—let me elaborate:
- What my request was trying to convey was the need for an tutorial/survey reference article covering material more than sufficient for a book length work with stylistically consistent annoted static maps showing significant global and regional detail, preferably with inferred best-guesses as to the era's Lat and Long overlaying static shots of continental landscapes (sometimes including and identifying knowable locii) over time, preferably across regular time intervals. As an example, the maps in the Pennsylvanian era would show where the terrain that gave the great bituminous coal fields of the Appalachians ridge and valley system.
- Sorry, but the dynamic Maps you suggest in the linked GIF sequence map flys by so rapidly no one could possibly have a useful thought about how various systems and the biota would interact at any one time—much less how those both related in that then to the likely climate and weather about a given locii. Frankly it progresses so fast as to be absolutely useless and a waste of time and space—save as an introduction to elementary kids to the concept of continental drift. I'm after rather more meat and potatoes and less Madison Avenue hype!
- Basically, I was hoping for some thing with lots of snap shots that were geographically accurate and justifiable with and by reference to the rock record everywhere, so far as its currently known. Where were the oceans then and how do they relate to terrains now? How did those line up with magnetic domains? What parts of which continents were tropical, sub-tropical, or polar? Moreover, how do climatologists view the radiance impulses hitting the earth and the overall temperatures of the time both regionally and globally. How did the terrains then steer weather, or see increased changeability because blocking ridgelines elsewhere steered weather into such and such a basin? Is this or that mountain range building, diminished or yet to be? Where were the bogs laying down the coal beds, and so on and so on. RELATIONAL DATA keyed by time passage. GEO surveys should be able to begin framing Earth History in such snapshots both regionally, and globally. I was requesting a survey article more or less painting those kinds of pictures that are generally agreed upon, and perhaps one which skillfully illuminates when and where such consensus is lacking and why there is a dispute about such and such an era.
Thanks for the thought. Best regards, // FrankB 18:00, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for your thoughtful response here, but our meeting point was in "Request for an Article" (which was de facto to be written presumably by someone with expertise!) and breaking down the .gif file and making all sorts of assumptions strikes me as far less than a good use of my time, nor any quality standard acceptable to wikipedia. An expert, would already have a solid grasp of the interactions and complications you noted, and presumably have ready access to citable sources and intimate knowledge of source journal articles or books that stitch together the story. The advances of Paleoarcheology in my lifetime have been astounding, and there are likely many someones out there who are likely already putting together the progression as a picture show. But again, thanks for your courtesys. Whilst I've started my share of Wikipedia articles since 2004, I find it better to stay with areas where I've a firm founding, not just a boundless curiosity! Also, these days, I limit myself to corrective edits. I'm disgusted by the reversion culture where someone can just discard a half-hour effort-result in the blink of his ownership eye sans thought or consideration of the whole change. Best wishes, // FrankB 12:43, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

DYK for 1911 Sarez earthquake
[edit]On 21 June 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article 1911 Sarez earthquake, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the 1911 Sarez earthquake triggered a huge landslide, forming the tallest dam in the world? You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

[edit]Thanks for keeping a sharp eye on the stuff I've been doing. I got the images of flood.firetree.net where it says "Data provided by NASA" in the bottom right corner. This seemed to me to be enough but I must admit that I'm new to uploading images and its policies. However if that isn't living up to standards I'll flag them to be removed. Meanwhile I'll check out [1] and the "Fair use images" policy. The quality of the images is pretty poor and is way less than the site provides so it does make a (strong) case for fair use anyway. Well I'll hear from you I hope. AlwaysUnite (talk) 16:06, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

WP Archaeology assessment drive
[edit]You've inspired me to get on with seriously tackling the backlog of unassessed articles, but I can't imagine making much progress manually editing the templates... is there a faster way? I've been trying to get AWB+KingbotK to do it for the last couple of hours to no avail. Since you seem to do a lot of tagging and assessing, I was hoping you'd know of a script or something to speed up the process more easily. joe•roet•c 19:58, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
- I was thinking more semi-automated than automated. Something that leaves assessing to its human but makes it slightly less tedious to edit the talk page and add/change the template. Perhaps there isn't anything like that. Thanks anyway! joe•roet•c 20:29, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

Luba
[edit]I dropped the link to Luba from the Cameroon line article because it points to a disambiguation page. I did not see a mountain in the list of Lubas. You may well be correct in thinking that Gran Caldera de Luba is a synonym for San Carlos (volcano), with the mountain named after the town of Luba, Equatorial Guinea, formerly San Carlos. Aymatth2 (talk) 14:25, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
- Take a look at User:Anomie/linkclassifier. You just have to add two lines to User:EdwardLane/monobook.js. The effect, which I find very useful, is that links to redirects show up as green rather than blue, links to disambiguation pages have a yellow background and so on. When I saw that someone had changed Cameroon line, which is on my watchlist, I took a quick look to see what the changes were and the link to the Luba disambiguation jumped out. Disputed areas

Some information
[edit]About the RfC in Project Map, CMD, Benlisquare, Skyfiler and me are somehow "pro-PRC" (I don't mind such branding as long as it does not affect the weight of our argument,) so debating over the map about climate, fauna or flora is really digression and doesn't help much. I want the discussion focuses only on administrative map of a country with "sensitive" border dispute with other country. Skyfiler prefers exactly following the only source we have, i.e. including Taiwan and South Tibet without a single clarification in the administrative map. The other Chinese and me agree that indicating the de facto and de jure status of these areas would be appropriate (as a compromise to the Indian users but they still don't satisfy with it.) While the Indian users like Kondi want those claimed area completely removed from the map because they think this is pushing POV. And that's it. -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk) 11:03, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
- Thx. The thing is, I think the discussion is more or less settled since you and Strebe agree on the presentation of claimed uncontrolled area. And I too am tired of this long discussion and wish it to end ASAP. -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk) 11:49, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

Signpost for April 30
[edit]Hi,
Tony asked me if I could put a big map at the end of Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2012-04-30/WikiProject report, so I added one. If you would rather have another map there, that's fine. I'm also going to ask Yug, as I don't know which one of you is on line right now. The issue is about to be published. Thanks, MathewTownsend (talk) 18:26, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- Agree that your map selection would have been a better choice. Not being familiar with map categories, I didn't know where to look to fulfill Tony's suggestion. Thanks for you note on my page. Best wishes, MathewTownsend (talk) 12:38, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Event at Cardiff 30.6.12
[edit]I see you've listed yourself on the meta wiki ar attending the event held ar Cardiff Central Library. There has been a bit of confusion as to the nature of the event, which has irked some people. Just posting this here in case it has any bearing on whether you still intend to come or not.--Rhyswynne (talk) 07:56, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
- OK, thanks for letting me know. I'm a bit paranoid that it's comng across like I'm warning people off from attending, but just wanted to be clear. Regarding whether you can contribute or not, I notice you have some knowledge of Welsh, so don't sell yourself short! Over on cy:wki at the moment, there's an American (I think) guy, with zero Welsh skills, creating lots of articles on US cities using a rough 'template' of articles (using a stock of sentances). So if you do happen to be in the vicinicty on the day, come and say helo and have a go. Yes, articles like the museum one are what we might work on - so far only a handfull of articles from cy have been copied over to en, as opposed to vice vera.--Rhyswynne (talk) 11:22, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

[edit]Hi. When you recently edited Kariz (water supply), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Shahristan (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Help with Latvian mythology
[edit]Hi EdwardLane,
A few other editors and I are involved in a discussion at Talk:Latvian mythology#Latvian mythology or Baltic mythology? about whether Latvian mythology (and, by extension, other Baltic mythology articles like Lithuanian mythology) are deserving of their own articles or whether they should be merged into Baltic mythology, which should be written to explain the similarities and differences between them?
You seem to be involved with WP:Wikiproject Mythology and your knowledge of writing mythology articles could be a great help in our discussion.
Kind regards, Matt (talk) 21:48, 22 July 2012 (UTC)
Baltic religion articles
[edit]Hi. If you would like, I think it might be useful to consult the Lindsay Jones Encyclopedia of Religion regarding the articles it includes in its synoptic outline in the heading "Baltic religions." If you don't have a copy readily available, drop me an e-mail and I can send you those which I can access on the HighBeam Research databank. John Carter (talk) 17:23, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

- Edward, I've commented on your post at the map wikiproject & changed the section heading to read MfD, I hope that's ok. I am concerned that people might just copy stuff elsewhere without actually reading the sources as I'm convinced this editor doesn't understand our policies on original research. He certainly doesn't understand what we mean by reliable sources. Thanks. Dougweller (talk) 12:08, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

Ostomachion - turning red links blue
[edit]You might care to look back at Ostomachion to see how comparatively easy it was to turn blue the red links you left by appeal to existing content, even phrasing, in other Wikipedia entries. In that you are a mathematician, I am a bit surprised that you did not do this yourself, but I trust you will approve of what you now find.
Naturally, it would be helpful to know what drew you to Ostomachion and what you had in mind in introducing the red links. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.96.121.100 (talk) 00:49, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

[edit]We are currently running a study on the effects of adding additional information to SuggestBot's suggestions. Participation in the study is voluntary. Should you wish to not participate in the study, or have questions or concerns, you can find contact information on the SuggestBot study page.
IMPORTANT CHANGES: We have modified the selection of articles SuggestBot suggests and altered the design to incorporate more information about the articles, as described in this explanation.
Note: All columns in this table are sortable, allowing you to rearrange the table so the articles most interesting to you are shown at the top. All images have mouse-over popups with more information.
Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions
[edit]We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:
- Views/Day
- Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
- Quality
- Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.
The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:
- Content
- Is more content needed?
- Headings
- Does this article have an appropriate section structure?
- Images
- Is the number of illustrative images about right?
- Links
- Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?
- Sources
- For its length, is there an appropriate number of citations to sources in this article?

The Wales Coast Path WikiProject
[edit]
As a member of WikiProject Wales, WikiProject Cardiff or an user who has contributed to Welsh articles we invite you to contribute to a new project, Living Paths!: articles, images, translations... Lonely Planet rated the coast of Wales "the best region on Earth" in 2012, yet there is a very low number of articles on the history and culture of places along the Coastal Path. This promises to be an exciting project as it gathers momentum with many Users joining in across the world. |
If you are interested in training groups in Wales, please leave a message on the Talk Page. |

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. For the Election committee, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:53, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

Invitation to chat about interactive maps
[edit]Hello, I’m Chris, a community liaison in the Discovery department at the Wikimedia Foundation. One of the projects we’re working on is to bring interactive maps to Wikipedia. If you are interested, I’d like to have an informal conversation with you about your work with WikiProject Maps, and the conventions you all have created. I'd like to learn more about your work and how that might influence the design of interactive maps.
Please let me know of some good times to chat via email and I can setup a meeting for us. I can be reached at ckoernerwikimedia.org.
If you’re not interested, that’s fine. I would appreciate any direction to other editors that have been involved and might be interested.
Have a good day, CKoerner (WMF) (talk) 20:46, 12 April 2016 (UTC)

July 2018
[edit]Hello. It appears your talk page is becoming quite lengthy and is in need of archiving. According to Wikipedia's user talk page guidelines; "Large talk pages become difficult to read, strain the limits of older browsers, and load slowly over slow internet connections. As a rule of thumb, archive closed discussions when a talk page exceeds 75 KB or has multiple resolved or stale discussions." - this talk page is 1076.8 KB. See Help:Archiving a talk page for instructions on how to manually archive your talk page, or to arrange for automatic archiving using a bot. If you have any questions, place a {{help me}} notice on your talk page, or go to the help desk. Thank you. --Jax 0677 (talk) 21:48, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

Roy Francis (rugby)
[edit]I'm sorry, I'm terrible at keeping up with my talk page.
Bad news
[edit]I'm going to be honest: Roy Francis kind of fits into the period it's hardest to get free-licensed images from. Too late for images of him to be a simple "out of copyright because of Life+70 of the photographer", but died too early to easily get an image released.
Basically, with the American copyright rules that Wikipedia enforces atop the Welsh ones, the default out-of-copyright period is basically pre-1924 (advancing one year forwards each year).
For people from the last decade or so, Wikipedia photographers will often do a release of images to us, which brings in a lot of more modern people.
But Roy Francis was born in 1919, and died in 1989. A generation is usually defined as about 30 years, and infants don't take photographs, so that basically means we're looking about two generations of photographers back, minimum. At that point, it's basically luck.
Good news
[edit]That said, this is why WP:FAIRUSE exists. Because there's a huge gap that's basically inaccessible to us, we can use one image per article under fair use. Criterion 10 under Wikipedia:Non-free_content#Images. I'm not the biggest expert on fair use, I'd probably suggest asking on WP:AN for help, as there's a bunch of administrators that specialise in that. Try to find an image that you think would be suitable for fair use to ask them about, noting the restrictions from Wikipedia:Non-free_content#Images_2.
I hope that helped, and I'm sorry this both took so long, and basically ended with me passing on bad news. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.6% of all FPs 13:39, 19 October 2020 (UTC)
