Tips
  • Don't be afraid to edit! Just find something that can be improved and make it better. Other editors will help fix any mistakes you make.
  • It's normal to feel a little overwhelmed, but don't worry if you don't understand everything at first—it's fine to edit using common sense.
  • If an edit you make is reverted, you can discuss the issue at the article's talk page. Be civil, and don't restore the edit unless there is consensus.
  • Always use edit summaries to explain your changes.
  • When adding new content to an article, always include a citation to a reliable source.
  • If you wish to edit about a subject with which you are affiliated, read our conflict of interest guide and disclose your connection.

Note

[edit]

Hi CLLight, thanks for your work on the Ben Light article. I just thought I'd leave you this note about referencing. When you add content to articles, it is helpful if you could add an inline citation for each sentence. Notice how Jweiss11's version of the article has a citation at the end of each claim he was making. It's okay if the sources are offline. Here is the wikitext markup to add a news source:

<ref name=obituary>{{cite news |author= |title=Ben Light Dies; Instrumental in Development of Ithaca College |url= |newspaper=[[The Ithaca Journal]] |date=January 19, 1971 |page=15 |access-date= }}</ref>

and if you need to cite the same source multiple times, here is the markup for that:

<ref name=obituary/>

Trust me, my friend, I know that when facts are stated, reliable source references are required. My problem is that my brain is 78 years 11 months old, and even when I look at the "wikitext markup" you so graciously provided, it just begins to shake and tremble at the thought of actually using it. JWeiss11 was kind enough to take pity on me when I begged for help in creating my father's article, and I gave him some references, and he found others, which is why there are any references in the article at all!
I was able to figure out how to do edits by reading what had been done before, and I was even able to figure out how to create a new section for "Officiating" by looking at the code used to create other sections of the article, but figure out how to reference a newspaper or book article, and to somehow get the article clipped out of newspapers.com and loaded into the page, is beyond my feeble abilities.
I have provided almost all of the source material by email to JWeiss11, and continue to hope that he will find the time to add the references I have provided. But I know he is busy, and probably tired of me. As soon as my brain stops trembling, I will try to get it to figure this stuff out, but in the meantime, I can only hope that you, and other kind Wikipedians, will take pity on my poor brain and give it time.
With sincere apologies,

No worries. You don't have to use newspapers.com. The offline sources you have are okay. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 23:03, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe you can tell me where I have gone wrong. I tried to create a reference (No. 11) to an Ithaca Journal article using a combination of your Wikitext markup for citation, and the actual Wikitext used by JWeiss11 for reference No. 1. I left the <|access-date= ]]> blank because I didn't have one. It is just a clipping I found among my father's things. A number of things appear wrong, and I don't know if they are all related to the "access-date" problem or indicate other issues. For instance, in the other references the title is highlighted, but not so in my effort. Any ideas of where I went wrong, or if or how I should create an access date?
