The Kinky Kwartet

[edit]

I would like to know why the Kinky Kwartet page was deleted. They are a legitimate band that is notable. They have been on Djibouti's top ten list which I believe satisfies that they are notable (WPBAND). I see no reason for the page to have been deleted.

The Free University Movement =

[edit]

There appears to be spammers who advertise yogurt and other products deleting articles about the Free Open College and Free Open University movement. Thousands of people around the world are joining the free University movement but some do not believe that the "unfit" should have access to free university education. Some have other motivations to remove all references to the Free University Movement. MIT's open courseware is neither free nor open. It is typical for their open course to have no content and only refer the learner to a list of hundreds of dollars of MIT and other textbook publications. Wikipedia spammed their textbook selling scam while deleting all references to real free content such as UC Berkeley pod casts etc.

we are getting deleted and swamped by spam selling CLEP guides and link sites to online schools. please help. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Scottprovost (talkcontribs) 08:31, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently, the site now shows a chart without the /0 part. I find it less likely that the chart was changed so quickly than that the site covered its rear end by photoshopping the image and burying any trace of criticism. Oh well, what can you expect from a site that sold such a chart in the first place. -- Meni Rosenfeld (talk) 19:27, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thanks for keeping an eye out for spam articles!

I removed the speedy tag since the article asserts notability with the links to reviews in magazines. It still has a lot of problems, however, which I have tagged.

When you "speedy" an article, it's always good to give article creators a {{spam-warn}} notice warning them of imminent deletion:

  1. It's a courtesy
  2. It gives them feedback on what not to do if they want to recreate the article
  3. It leaves a record of the deletion on the user's talk page should he add more of the same articles in the future.

Again, thanks for patrolling for this sort of article.

AfD for Wilmington Montessori School

[edit]

Andrew, You initially and correctly put a Speedy on my first wikipedia article - Wilmington Montessori School - this past Saturday. I began my first wiki entry (for WMS) by viewing most of the other articles for sister schools in the Mid-Atlantic region. At the time, I was unaware of WP:WAX and WP:N, as such, my first entries mirrored many of those articles and did not carry much weight for notability even though I was providing as much or more information than other representative schools (again, unaware of WP:WAX .. and WP:V, WP:N, WP:RS, and even the proposed guideline Wikipedia:Notability (schools) that could provide at least a minimal starting point for a proper article). Since that time I have been reviewing many of the WP policies and guidelines and have also been revising the article with the help of other editors and have completed the following,

  • Two other editors cleaned up any promotional material. I also removed a debatable claim that was not backed with secondary sources.
  • Several secondary sources have been added.
  • Two additional references regarding national grants - the first by the US Environmental Protection Agency; and, the second by Toyota and the National Science Teacher's Association.
  • Added Montessori Life reference that "Wilminglon [sic] Montessori School ... Delaware's oldest and largest Montessori school..." [1]

With the additional recent work toward establishing notability and the additional comments by other experienced editors, I would appreciate if you could review Wilmington Montessori School, Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_deletion/Wilmington_Montessori_School, and Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Wilmington_Montessori_School and provide your opinion.

Hello, sorry for not understanding Wikipedia's policy on external links correctly: being a no-profit website, where a project open to any new collaboration/collaborators is proposed without any sort of commercial (or any other form of) advertisement, I thought the link could be useful and of a certain public interest. Yes, I can realize now that a conflict may arise between my "private interests", as a programmer, and Wikipedia's obligations. The big problem here is that the original creation of this article was a spammy effort to WP:COATRACK an ad for somebody's parent company, which sells this vile service. I have nothing against using it as a redirect, since the COI is thus defeated, and it's pretty clear that the term is in use by the Evil Empire, among others, independent of the spammer's employer. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:09, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

[edit]

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

proposed museum deletion

[edit]

Hi AndrewWTaylor, a few days ago you proposed Gounaropoulos Museum for deletion. Dr.Blofeld's stubs and his subsequent efforts have caused an amazing amount of articles to come alive, both in Films and Geography. Many of them however are doomed, and since you brought up the above mentioned stub, there is an awful lot more exactly like it under Category:Museums in Greece. Being familiar with Greek, I have attempted comparing with the Greek wikipedia's lists of museums, and visited as many links as I could find to determine notability. Few of these "dictionary-type" stubs are worth developing, but most should be condensed in a list IMO, if anything. How do you think is best to go about this cleanup? Altered Speedy Deletion rationale: Zac poonen

[edit]

Hello AndrewWTaylor, and thanks for your work patrolling new changes. I am just informing you that I have deleted a page you tagged (Zac poonen) under a criterion different from the one your provided, which was inappropriate or incorrect. CSD criteria are narrow and specific to protect the encyclopedia, and the process is more effective if the correct deletion rationale is supplied. Consider reviewing the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions or problems, please let me know. Thanks again! Coffee // have a cup // ark // 16:02, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Andrew,

Thank you for replying to my message contesting deletion under the category of "unambiguous advertising". I have read the guidelines you referred to and was very careful to follow correct formatting and refrain from any opinions negative or positive, in order to remain neutral and informative.

To be honest, I'm honestly sad to say that I'm losing faith in Wikipedia. I thought it was for everyone, for anyone, to share any neutral information that allowed people to find out more (about more stuff), in one place.

Well, there is so much unwarranted negativity and red tape that it feels like it's just not worth it. I feel that I should be telling everyone how contributing within the guidelines of Wikipedia (as I have done) is a big waste of time (I don't want to... but that's how I feel).

This is very frustrating. Could you please actually tell me how that page qualified as unambiguous advertising? Because if not, then shouldn't it be undeleted?

When someone has put hard work into creating a totally neutral and informative page, I don't understand how an admin can delete it without providing even a single specific and referenced reason. And without a chance for meangingful discussion. How can we possibly help the community to grow within the guidelines and spirit of Wikipedia and keep in check anyone who might otherwise impede it's growth and good nature (making unwarranted claims and imposing unfair penalties on honest contributors).

I feel that I'm trying to make an honest and valuable contribution and that at present I'm surrounded by bullies who answer to no-one. Is that the spirit under which Wikipedia was created or is supposed to be administered?

Wikipedia:CSD#G11 "Note that simply having a company or product as its subject does not qualify an article for this criterion."

Knock-out Whist

[edit]

Dear friendly editor Andrew,

I kindly ask you to revert your move as for the image deleted or replace it for a more suitable one once you think it doesn't fit the place. As a more experienced editor than I am, you know that unless clearly better or more appropriate images are available, the existing images in the article should be left in place (Wikipedia:Layout#Images).

Knowing that your concern as for the improvement of the articles listed in Wiki is noticeable, I assume that you agree that delition is indeed a step backwards. Yes, I entirely agree with you that the image in question may not be suitable for the article, so if you can't or don't want to make it any better, please, don't delete it. There are hundreds of images that you can place there, all at you disposal. You can choose any one you wish, one that you like, and I will struggle to keep it there for you.

Yes, I was called attention on many subjects here in Wiki, but I didn't take this as an offence or enough reason to get mad at those who called my attention to the problem. Instead, I followed their advice and made them my friends.

Yours truly, Krenakarore (talk) 23:42, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 3 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. [edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

Hi Andrew, I have read http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Wikipedia:EXT and it seems to me that the Clef Cleaner webpage is an excellent candidate for an external link. It is not, as you say, a "blog post", but rather a webpage like all the other links with Wordpress used only as a framework. If you read the content you will find that it suggests a much better system for musical notation than any of the other "alternative" notations mentioned. I would go so far as to say this theory deserves its own section in the article, while most of the other links you have approved are personal webpages that bring nothing new to the table, some are full of ads, some are webshops. Hi -- I think I'm being hacked because I couldn't get through this morning at all. My page has some signs on it that are not fair because all that has been inserted on the text are updates. The decision made by Judge J. Spencer Letts is in the Supreme Court Appeal and it's a matter of record, no one can dispute that. Everything else is correct.

On my grandfather Jose Luis Chinea -- When one deals with Cuban issues, such as my grandfather Colonel Chinea, one must understand that Cuba is a closed totalitarian country not unlike North Korea with which Cuba maintains diplomatic relations -- communication with the island is restricted for exiles and their relatives, so the government NEVER responded to my request for information about my grandfather, which is not unusual -- I'm going to try to post a picture of my grandfather here in full regalia -- that's as close as I get vis-a-vis corroboration. Most Cubans have nothing left here of their past because the Cuban government doesn't allow paperwork when one flees and sometimes it becomes impossible to carry such paperwork on an inner tube, as you may imagine. Well, I can't figure out a way to get a photo posted -- can you show me how? It's a shortcut on my desktop.

As to "anonymous (street meat)" More will be said about my short because of its quality and subject-matter -- here's a linked Bruin article in that regards (my name was misspelled) -- http://www.dailybruin.com/index.php/article/2011/05/grad_student_midgia_chinea039s_film_039anonymous_street_meat039_selected_for_cannes_short_film_festi

Old business that has resurfaced and because of that, this is for the record -- just in case.

There was an article in which the Judge assigned to the case against the WGAW and CBS was quoted as making the statement "if you can get something for half-pay why would you pay full price." The piece was deleted by unknown. However, it is quoted in the class action Supreme Court Brief and it would not have been quoted if it wasn't a matter of record.

I've been maligned by the Guild and CBS as if I had done something wrong and as if I had opposed "affirmative action." The Guild -- along with CBS -- have all the power and money.

Here's what I did: I opposed half-pay in the name of "affirmative action" and thought that it was used as a cynical ploy to demean Hispanics, obfuscate the truth and squelch dissent.

I must also point out that I was blacklisted in the industry to this day and that some Hispanics benefited for going along with the WGAW/CBS half-pay program and they also benefited for speaking out against me. In my view, the half-pay program was nothing more than a publicity stunt to artificially increase employment stats. As deplorable as that can be -- it's dog eat dog out there and since Hispanics are discriminated, not only does the Guild, and the rest pit, one against the other, but Hispanics themselves will do whatever it takes to get ahead -- even if that means sentencing another Hispanic to unemployment and oblivion.

My conscience is clear, but my bank account reflects the consequences of this back backstabbing. I have resurfaced as a UCLA Grad film student and have not allowed their combined behavior to impede my aspirations or ambitions -- even though I'm fully cognizant that they have put me through hell unnecessarily and that I'm paying for having opposed discrimination -- paying with my purse and my time and my health, by being humiliated. Paying, when professors who dislike uppity Hispanics make disparaging comments. Paying for not abiding to instructions that I not talk about myself.

Still paying.

Bounty edits

[edit]

Hello, I reverted your Bounty edits because "it is hoped" is passive voice and not as succinct as "hopefully," the adjective "singleminded" for Bligh is more straightforward than making an adverb out of it and thus needing to add a comma, and it was a difficult voyage. Regards — HarringtonSmith (talk) 16:04, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I like the repetition of "difficult" for the same reason I like "It's a dirty story of a dirty man and his clinging wife doesn't understand." For me, it's what makes the sentence — but like you, not enough to want to fight over it. At least not with a fellow fan of MOTB. Cheers — HarringtonSmith (talk) 23:37, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This was an error on my part and has now been corrected. Thank you for pointing this out. Bigar (talk) 11:45, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion declined: Gayhooray

[edit]

Hello AndrewWTaylor. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Gayhooray, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: A7: the article claims 1.9 million active profiles, this is enough of a claim of notability to make CSD A7 invalid. Thank you. (talk) 21:30, 18 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

User:K.h93/SMS Billing Types

[edit]

Hi I have been trying to create this page SMS Billing Types for a while as I was looking for the information to help with an article I was writing myself about SMS Billing and for the first time Wikipedia was no help! I have had the page deleted twice and been warned for advertising (not intentionally but now I see what they meant by it!) I was wondering if you could check the page and get back to me with any helpful feedback please! I would like to ensure others have a full knowledge of this.

Many Thanks!

Hi Andrew. The creator of all those comic character stubs has now been blocked for sockpupptry. They may have created dozens of such articles. If you feel like a challenge, would you like to have a go at finding the rest and tagging them all for CSD? OK: firstly I don't think "Sisteer" is a plausible typo for "Sister" that needs a redirect, otherwise we would have redirects for any kind of finger trouble; secondly, the article in question seemed to be blatant advertising and I thought it needed to go through the correct process. Hasty and wrong deletion

[edit]

There's no question that Taylor Business Institute is notable. It's been advertised, in commercials, ads, in the news, FOR DECADES. It's a business college, fairly well known. I did not write much, at first, but I was gonna get to it. You and others SIMPLY DID NOT GIVE ME THE CHANCE to expand or add context etc. Why not? Why be so hasty, quick, and knee-jerk? I barely wrote it minutes ago, and it's gone already, simply because it was a stub. Taylor Business Institute is sourced, known, and notable. Copiously so. Why do that? It seems like certain Wikipedians who deal with this matter are trigger-happy with the deletion button, without carefully or fairly or intelligently considering the matter, or giving any time. Others could have added to the stub too. So what? It just needed some expanding. But TBI is notable. That's not really debatable. Cheers. Hashem sfarim (talk) 12:48, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No need to reply - he posted the same rant on Fastily's page, and is wholly ignoring the help he has already been provided on his own talkpage (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 15:02, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Wilky, I'm NOT "totally ignoring" it. I'm considering it (though I personally disagree with its implentation BY some dogmatic ones such by Andy here, as a wee bit more time could have theoretically been given). I was just making the point (that you're ignoring) that it would have been nice if more than 3 seconds was given in deleting the thing. Like maybe 24 hours. THAT'S IT. It's not that I'm "totally ignoring" the "help" given (the other Admin "Bmusician" was more cool about it, you were just big jerk). So don't assume, as usual. Also, uh, why not butt out? This isn't even your business. It seems that a lot of your rancor here towards me is based on some personal bias, from some minor nonsense from ages ago. Admin or not. It's not cool. Thank you. Speedy deletion contested: Chedham's Yard

Speedy deletion declined: Homer vawter

[edit]

I have declined the speedy deletion of Homer vawter, which you tagged for speedy deletion. The article states that the subject was the mayor of Jeffersonville, Indiana; since there exists a list of mayors of Jeffersonville, Indiana with several blue links, this indicates that the subject is possibly notable, so criterion A7 does not apply. Speedy deletion of WebHouse

[edit]

Hi Andrew W. Taylor!

How come you have set the article "WebHouse" for Speedy deletion because it is a company ?

I can find thousands of examples of companies who have a Wikipedia entry for example http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/37signals

WebHouse is just like 37 Signals a privately held company who basically does the same in a smaller scale than 37.

Best regards Christian Broberg — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cbroberg (talkcontribs) 14:06, 12 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The problem with the article was not to do with the importance of the company (though it may not qualify under Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion) , but its very promotional tone, making it look like an advertisement rather than a neutral encyclopedia article. AndrewWTaylor (talk) 15:21, 12 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It being a company it not a reason either to keep or delete. Its existence isn't, either. I deleted it because of the promotional wording. It being in Danish was not a factor, although that would have mattered later after significance had been assessed - and I didn't see much to assert significance in real terms. PR type hype is not a credible assertion of real significance, unless good sourcing is provided (complying with WP:RS). Company notability is at WP:CORP. If you wish the article to be in Danish, I would suggest the Danish Wikipedia as a place to post it. Articles here should be in English. Peridon (talk) 15:50, 12 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Excel question: horizontal line

[edit]

In Excel (2010), is there any way to get a solid horizontal line directly in the middle of a cell, going from left to right (in other words, cutting the cell in half horizontally)? I don't want to use a series of dashes or minus signs or equal signs, because they have a little blank space between each character (leaving little gaps). Rather, I want a solid, unbroken horizontal line (with no gaps). I looked in the "borders" format function, under "more borders". And there is indeed exactly the type of border that I am looking for. However, that specific border format is "grayed out", so that I am not able to click on it. Why is it even there, if it cannot be clicked on or selected? Or am I doing something wrong, and I should indeed be able to click on it? Any ideas? Thanks! Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 21:17, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You could use a macro to draw the lines. The following VBA code draws a horizontal line in the middle of every cell in the current selection:
Sub DrawLines()
    Dim c As Range
    For Each c In Selection
        ActiveSheet.Shapes.AddLine c.Left, c.Top + c.Height / 2, c.Left + c.Width, c.Top + c.Height / 2
    Next
End Sub
AndrewWTaylor (talk) 18:07, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I will try that macro and see how that works. But, I have no idea of what a macro really is. So, where exactly do I type all of that above code? Where in the Excel spreadsheet do I type all of that? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 20:01, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You need to copy it into the Visual Basic Editor, which you can get to by pressing Alt+F11. Here are some links that should get you started: [4], [5], [6]. AndrewWTaylor (talk) 09:40, 5 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the info and for those links. I will try that. Thank you. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 13:42, 5 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Calling all experts

[edit]

Hi Andrew. I am very pleased - very pleased indeed - to have given even one editor the impression that I am an expert in anything at all. Would that it were so. Sadly, no. I just struggle along life's rich pathway like everyone else. I do have a few pet areas of interest, as most people do, but even with them, I am constantly discovering new things, some of which, rather than simply adding to my store of knowledge, actually upset my existing understandings and beliefs and change my thinking. This is a good thing. I would never wish to think that I knew all there is to know on any subject. I've never even come close. Hell, I still know next to nothing about myself, after a lifetime of study. Cheers. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 18:39, 10 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]
Our motto: "It's only hard if you make it hard"

The PENISS Prize
On behalf of the People Encouraging Niceness (and/or Eschewing Nastiness) In Society Society, I hereby award you the PENISS Prize.

The prize is the highest (and sole) honour in the gift of the Society and is awarded irregularly, on merit. It entitles the awardee to the postnominal letters P.E.N.I.S.S. (in appropriate contexts, of course).

It confers automatic membership of the Society, and it thus bestows the power to award the prize to others*, and they to others, in perpetuity.

Remember, the more PENISSes in the world, the better for all of us. What a nice thought. Please continue your good work!

* To present this award to others, simply type {{subst:User:JackofOz/PENISS}} on their talk page, and then sign and date your post.

Hi, Andrew. This is in recognition of your help with my Schumann conundrum. Greatly appreciated. Cheers. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 22:56, 8 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Revert edit in Mandelbrot Set

[edit]

I gave the link to the Mandelbrot Set article to a friend that knows absolutely nothing about mathematics, but that wanted to know more about the Set. Later, he replied to me: "I could not understood the first phrase, so I didn't read more!". If he would continued reading, he would realized that the rest of the introduction is affordable. In my opinion, the introduction of Wikipedia articles should not include descriptions that require specialized knowledge in any area, in particular in the very first line. The Wikipedia recomendations specify:

"The article should begin with a short declarative sentence, answering two questions for the nonspecialist reader: "What (or who) is the subject?" and "Why is this subject notable?"

If you insist to keep the math description in the introduction, then you should move it to another part of the introduction... Aacini (talk) 02:32, 13 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Per Wikipedia:Proposed_deletion as a page editor, you are being informed of the proposed deletion of the page.

Notice

The article Carol Morgan has been proposed for deletion. The proposed deletion notice added to the article should explain why.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

Reason: Subject does not wish to have page. --JEM1406a (talk) 12:06, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Aonach Eagach, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Meall Dearg (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Language desk

[edit]

Apologies, but I had to revert your good-faith contribution to the language desk because the question was asked by a banned user. --Viennese Waltz 08:11, 14 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Statement C

[edit]

The statement C you deleted is explained and referenced in the talk section and is equivalent (I verified that) so is allowed under Wikipedia policy.

However it took me a day to figure I had not disproved the main proof being it is not in form actual infinity (all at once rather than forever ). That's not obvious if it is applied to Aleph-1 class sets. Many set theory proofs have to be in that form but Wikipedia routinely doesn't since they can be hard to follow. Such a proof is in the literature, it is only linked to. Victor Kosko 20:14, 29 September 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Victor Kosko (talkcontribs)

If you don't want those items discussed, how about you remove them from your question? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots11:20, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And by the way, the entire nation of North Korea is effectively a prison with a population of some 25 million. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots11:32, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Effective prison systems are the best kind, though. InedibleHulk (talk) 11:42, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It does the job for Kim. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots11:42, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Good thing a solid chunk are Kim, then. InedibleHulk (talk) 11:49, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Lots of Koreans are named Kim. It's like the Korean analogue to Smith or Jones. But there's only one guy named Kim who actually matters in NK. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots11:53, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
For more about the concept of freedom, see Liberty. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots11:34, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And you're mixing your metaphors. Police brutality, "excessive force", is often against the law, but it still happens. In contrast, the drinking age, along with whether to allow capital punishment, are chosen by the people of the individual states. If you don't like those things in your state, you are free to exercise your First Amendment rights and lobby for change. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots11:46, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Lobbying is too expensive for the average "you", same with suing corporations. InedibleHulk (talk) 11:51, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Not really. It just matters how badly you want it. States with the death penalty are apparently OK with it. Likewise with the drinking age. But there's nothing stopping anyone from speaking out. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots11:55, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, hearing constituents complain. That's what legislators value over money. Good luck, folks! InedibleHulk (talk) 11:59, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It depends on your priorities. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots13:11, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Wow, how dare someone say something about the US that isn't entirely positive eh? What is this? Fox News? Can we have some semblance of an adult discussion here? The OP asked an interesting, if somewhat naive question. The contradictions they mention are indeed odd to those outside the US, especially those used to a more liberal (in the American use of the word) society. Now, the question is probably not within the remit of the Refdesk, but there is no need to go off on nationalistic rants. And what does North Korea have to do with anything? Fgf10 (talk) 13:37, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
According to List of countries by incarceration rate, the US comes top on both "Prison Population" and "Incarceration Rate per 100,000 population" (by a substantial margin in both cases), so where is the "biased claim"? AndrewWTaylor (talk) 14:11, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The bias is in those numbers. North Koreans can't leave their country. That's prison. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots16:33, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Talking about biased claims...  --Lambiam 17:50, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
