Centroid
[edit]How to get your centroid calculation into Wikipedia: publish it in a reputable (preferably peer-reviewed) journal, and then suggest on the relevant Talk page that someone include a mention to it. --Macrakis (talk) 16:40, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
- I don't believe that my centroid calculation is appropriate subject matter for an academic journal-- it does not demonstrate any new mathematical technique or add to any theoretical debate. It is meant only to provide a running, annual synopsis of changes in the settlement patterns of the United States for those interested in the topic. Alex.zakrewsky (talk) 17:47, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
- Perhaps, then, you could convince some organization (the Census Bureau? the New York Times?) to use your calculation -- with credit. Otherwise, this falls under our original research policy. --Macrakis (talk) 22:03, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
- Here are a couple of news articles/releases about my centroid calculation, the first from 2011 and one more current:

- Please feel free to reference them. Thanks!Alex.zakrewsky (talk) 02:02, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks. The second one (from the STL) is not useful, because it is not an independent source -- you wrote it yourself. The first one is a good start, but it's presented as a human interest story after the official centroid had been announced. I think you'll have a hard time convincing Wikipedians that this is encyclopedic content unless you have some more authoritative statements. You're obviously a serious person and you've done a reasonable calculation, but I'm just not sure that this belongs in Wikipedia. --Macrakis (talk) 14:35, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
Many news outlets are reporting on my 2020 US population centroid estimate and other commentary I made regarding the new population center and its recent movement. Here are two of them:

- Your estimate is not notable and worth covering; nor is the estimate itself authoritative reliable source for the population center. We use the data from the Census Bureau as it becomes available.
- Please stop your repeated attempts at self-promotion. You're embarrassing yourself. TJRC (talk) 01:34, 17 November 2021 (UTC)
The Associated Press has a different opinion than yours as to whether my estimate is worth covering. My multiple estimates are authoritative and reliable in that they have been shown to be about a mile from official Census Bureau calculations. Since I issue them on an annual basis, they provide an important snapshot as to what is happening to US settlement patterns between Censuses. Like any researcher, I am eager to share my findings with those interested. There is no shame in disseminating high-quality information. Best, Alex.zakrewsky (talk) 01:56, 17 November 2021 (UTC)
