WikiCup 2012 July newsletter
We're approaching the beginning of 2012's final round. Pool A sees Cwmhiraeth (submissions) as the leader, with 300 points being awarded for the featured article Bivalvia, and Pool B sees Grapple X (submissions) in the lead, with 10 good articles, and over 35 articles eligible for good topic points. Pool A sees Muboshgu (submissions) in second place with a number of articles relating to baseball, while Pool B's Ruby2010 (submissions) follows Grapple X, with a variety of contributions including the high-scoring, high-importance featured article on the 2010 film Pride & Prejudice. Ruby2010, like Grapple X, also claimed a number of good topic points; despite this, not a single point has been claimed for featured topics in the contest so far. The same is true for featured portals.
Currently, the eighth-place competitor (and so the lowest scorer who would reach the final round right now) has scored 332, more than double the 150 needed to reach the final round last year. In 2010, however, 430 was the lowest qualifying score. In this competition, we have generally seen scores closer to those in 2010 than those in 2011. Let's see what kind of benchmark we can set for future competitions! As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Another Harrison GAN?
Hi GoP. Hope you saw my comments in thanks/reply regarding the Concert for BD GA (either on that talk page or my own). It's that time of the week or fortnight again − I'm just about to put a George Harrison song article up for GA nom, "Isn't It a Pity". Would love it if you could do the assessment again, but completely understand if you're otherwise engaged. Best, JG66 (talk) 08:45, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

FAC
Hi. Since you nominated The Concert in Central Park for FA, I was wondering if there's something I'm missing in the nomination process for Sons of Soul. It doesnt seem to be getting any attention at FAC, with new nominations being taken on and commented on and older ones being closed up. Is it just a waiting process? Dan56 (talk) 01:33, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
- Yes. Album articles are getting low attention in FAC, so you have to wait until someone will review Sons of Soul. Consider inviting people without canvassing. Regards.--Kürbis (✔) 09:06, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
I've just finished giving feedback for this FLC you nominated. It's a very impressive list and it's a shame there isn't much feedback there :( If you could do the same and comment on the 30–30 club list I nominated, that would be much appreciated. Hi why I can't insert Kanaeva's routines information? I saw many famous figure skater's pags have these kind information as well. what's the problem, I don't get it. My information is correct. Bully Kutta
Hi. I've placed your GOCE request for a copy edit of Bully Kutta on hold as recent events on the talk page make me concerned that any copy edit might get overrun by the arguments. Could you clarify what your request is for, please? A complete rewrite wouldn't normally fall within our mandate, and we certainly aren't here to mediate content disputes. In the light of events elsewhere on Wikipedia, I'm particularly concerned to see quarrelling about whether it should be called a Pakistani or Indian Mastiff. - Ah, I see. I've had a look at the help desk entry, and it's clearly an argument about content. GOCE editors ought to be good writers, but many of us would struggle with potential battlegrounds. Thanks for deleting the request. Best regards, --Stfg (talk) 09:21, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

Hey GoP (or Kurbis?), thanks so much for reviewing this song article. What a thrill − a pass first time out, no changes required. I've just put The Best of George Harrison up for GAN, and sometime over the next week maybe, I should have The Concert for Bangladesh article ready also. Please read speedy deletion criterion G7. It only applies to pages that have had a single author who wants deletion, or (logically) to pages with multiple authors when all the authors want it to be deleted. Your FLC includes lots of comments by TBrandley and by Crisco 1492, so they too would need to ask for deletion. Nyttend (talk) 00:07, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

1st Russian Booker Prize winner
You got me going, and I did a little article on Mark Kharitonov. I've got to find a bit more material to have the 1500 characters needed for DYK; it's at 1205 right now. The hook could be that he was the first winner of the Russian Booker. Finding book sources is always a pain for lesser known Russian writers, but I'll find more on Mark in books or on the internet. I was also thinking that a navbox and category for the Russian Booker Prize winners is needed. I'll take care of that. INeverCry 20:19, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks! Yes, a navbox is probably useful, good idea! Regards.--Kürbis (✔) 21:16, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
- Update: I expanded it a bit and have nominated it for DYK - Template:Did you know nominations/Mark Kharitonov. If you have a second, can you take a quick look and make sure I did everything right? This is my first DYK nomination. :) INeverCry 21:18, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

I have restored the talk page comments of mine and another that you had deleted, per WP:TPO. In response to your own (deleted) comment, why don't we stop "wasting our time" and just edit the article? That's what another editor did, and you reverted it. I am perfect fully willing to take that time and improve the quality of that article, which clearly needs some copy-editing, and improvements on phrasing and use of English, but I want to make sure that it won't simply get reverted because someone may be taking ownership of the article. And that is what the talk page is for; discussion of things the article may need, and what o do about it. If you disagree about the quality of that article, and are going to revert those edits, please say why, instead of reverting without comment. Echoedmyron (talk) 16:50, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
- re "parts" of a song - really, what you need to specify is something that tells the reader what makes one "part" different from another. Simply saying "second" and "third" isn't clear; that could mean that the song is equally divided into 3 equal parts based on time; I imagine you really mean something like the introduction could be the 1st part; possibly the second verse is a second part, the coda could be the third, or something like that. Try to use terms that refer to movements in musical composition, and if possible wikilink to related articles, such as Coda (music), if that is what you mean. The article should be clear in meaning to people who do not already have a familiarity with the artist, with the album, or possible with music at all. Obviously one does not go overboard and wikilink every single thing, but the more clear you can make something the better, and the more likely that an article can get up to GA status. I appreciate the effort you are making in response to the tags that I have inserted. I am happy to improve the quality of the writing, but only when I am certain that I can tell what you intend; I don't want to change the phrasing of sentences like the one we are discussing though if I am uncertain of the meaning, and in this case I'm not. It may also help if, in the same way you mention the horns, you are able to specify what exactly was recorded where for those parts; such as, what in that "second" part was recorded - vocals? Guitar? Strings? This will also add value to the statement. Right now just saying that a part was recorded somewhere is incomplete information. But you are on the right track. Echoedmyron (talk) 15:16, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

- I will do the first, but I think the second is a bit premature as it is under construction. Regards.--Kürbis (✔) 19:21, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
- What do you mean about the second article? The second article is complete and all the info possible has been included. You sure your looking at the right article?--Dom497 (talk) 20:28, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
