How was my edit to Rene not constructive? All I did was change Lewiston, Maine to hyperlink Maine separately so people can click on Maine as well as Lewiston. They are not test edits. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vaselineeeeeeee (talkcontribs) 02:48, 1 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Withdrawn. I saw a number of similar edits with no edit summaries close together, and didn't look closely enough to see what you were doing. Echoedmyron (talk) 03:25, 1 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Murphy bed

[edit]

I'm not citing, in the formal sense, pre-WWII comedies, but I am saying that the repeated use of Murphy beds as a prop in comedies - for over one hundred years now - probably contributed to a (perhaps cartoonish) perception of Murphy beds as potentially dangerous. It's something of a trope, which is why the article talks about their repeated use in film, and it's filled out by the fact that, on several occasions, news agencies have reported on actual accidents involving Murphy beds. The fact that most of the comedies are pre-WWII is immaterial; merely being old is not reason to disregard something. That, to my mind, makes it worthy of note - with a short couple of sentences; we're not talking about several paragraphs, here. Many things are dangerous when dropped (some are not; if you drop a penny on my head from an airplane, I will not die), but certain of those things show up repeatedly in fictional works, to the point where it's noteworthy. For instance, I'd think it rather irresponsible if we didn't include some mention of Wile E. Coyote in our coverage of anvils. (I don't know whether and how much coverage it gets at the moment, but I definitely believe it would be a glaring lack if we said nothing at all.) Chubbles (talk) 02:03, 3 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

My second Rvt, was my last. Thanks, for explaining my objections to Gloss' additions, better then I could've :) GoodDay (talk) 22:57, 16 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Like the team that's taking up this identity, the Hamilton Bulldogs, the IceCaps will have two consecutive franchises taking up their identity in the same league. Since the Bulldogs' timeline lists both franchises as part of team history (AHL at least), I figured it would be apropos for the IceCaps to do the same thing. I hope you understand. Tom Danson (talk) 22:16, 12 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I was trying to find examples, and it hadn't occurred to me that Hamilton fit the bill themselves. It does seem odd, though, to have this shared history, as typically articles stick with the single franchise. For example, neither the article for the current Winnipeg Jets nor the article for the previous version of the same name lists the other franchise in its infobox, so that's what I was thinking of. However, if this is more commonly done for AHL teams then so be it. Echoedmyron (talk) 22:21, 12 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It's more about there being a franchise with the name in consecutive seasons than anything else...after the first Bulldogs franchise moved to Toronto, the former Quebec Citadelles took up that name (however, I will probably create a new article for the Bulldogs' OHL team, as they're in a different league and a different style of hockey). Thank you again. Tom Danson (talk) 22:26, 12 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hope you don't mind if I jump in here but this could go either way, though I would lean towards keeping it as one team for the time being and split latter if there is enough of a management difference. Hamilton is actually a special case where for one season it was two merged franchises and editors at the time objected to splitting them. In the end the newer franchise stayed and the one owned by Edmonton moved but left the 'team history behind. Because of the temporary merger much of the staff and players stayed through the transition. Other examples of multiple franchises - same name are the Maine Mariners of the AHL and the Fort Wayne Komets currently in the ECHL. Each is a different case but mostly those two are together because there wasn't really enough info to keep separate pages for each franchise. In the end it will probably come down to whether the AHL and fans want it to be the same team regardless of business with franchise histories and affiliations. I was referencing the citation that is actually on the end of that sentence: [1]. I will say that other references don't make the same distinction, however. With some references referring to two separate sounds and others as one continuous, determining which is most accurate I'll leave for others to decide. Ah yes, I changed that citation - I'm not sure which is accurate (and who really is this many years later), but I've certainly seen it more often the way I changed it to. I added the reference I found so others may find it useful as well. Thanks.

New York Islanders

[edit]

Hi,

You edit is good as you provided a source. And that obvious vandalism comment was made, because that other user is harassing me and reverts all my edits on many articles with no or with rubbish reason/reasons.

And I just looked at your edits. To be clear, at this – http://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=Philadelphia_Flyers&oldid=669264413. Your reason was – Announced only, not inducted until November. There's the same discussion ongoing on various NBA teams' pages. I say the same as you that people should be added to respective team articles only after the actual induction ceremony, but most people disagree and don't really try to find a consensus and make edits according to their own taste... – Sabbatino (talk) 15:57, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the HHOF thing, I brought it up at the Ice Hockey wikiproject page here, and the reasoning I heard is largely couched in the fact that people will probably continue to add the info in, even if we remove or rephrase the addition about being an announcement and not yet an actual induction. As others noted, it's highly unlikely that any of the elected people will have their inductions cancelled, so I'm good with that. But that wikiproject talk page is a good venue should you ever have other questions or concerns about how certain things get done on hockey-related articles. Echoedmyron (talk) 16:05, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I just find it interesting that there was a consensus in the past about adding people only after HOF induction, but suddenly that consensus is gone and people are doing what they want. I don't have a problem with hockey-related things. My biggest concern is about finding the same consensus in basketball, but it's impossible, because some people are incompetent in that, I think I'll just move away from that consensus thing and let people edit how they want until they get warned/banned/blocked/etc. – Sabbatino (talk) 16:11, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Whip It!

[edit]

The point of adding that disambiguation was not because someone would confuse the song with the film, it's because the page "Whip It!" redirects to the film page. I don't think there are five notable songs with the exclamation mark in the title that would need to be added as "see also"s. It wasn't a see also template anyway. No need to be sarcastic when you revert someone; your reasoning is no more justified than mine. Ss112 16:23, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I can see from even your recent edits you revert a lot of content added to the page and honestly, I wouldn't even bother contesting your revert because it's clear it would turn into a pointless edit war. Ss112 16:30, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If your issue is that Whip It! redirects to the film page, change that redirect; since the only actual use of Whip It with an exclamation point is the song you linked to, I don't see why usage with an exclamation point should redirect to the film's entry in the first place. My edit summary did reference your edit as having been Good Faith, and if you thought that in the brevity allowed in edit summaries I was being sarcastic, that's your issue, not mine. Fact is, when you enter "Whip It" in the wikipedia search bar, you are given 7 suggestions: the film, this disamb page (which doesn't include the article you linked to) [2], songs by Devo, Nicki Minaj and yes, the one you linked to among other things. So picking just one item to include in the hatnote seemed odd, especially since no other article using this term includes that punctuation. To be fair, no, I suppose "5 songs" was an exaggeration, but I hadn't previously taken the time to count. If you looked at the edit history on the film's article you would see that the edit reverts by me are largely for overlinking, copyright vios, crazy excessive detail and in one case edits by someone who was subsequently blocked for their editing behavior. So, thanks for the show of faith in your judgement in your follow up insult in anticipating an edit war. Echoedmyron (talk) 16:53, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sherbourne Health Centre

[edit]

Just to let you know I intend to send Sherbourne Health Centre to AfD. Reads like a promotional piece with primary sources. Is it even a hospital? JMHamo (talk) 20:44, 8 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It certainly is. And as the article was just created by another editor this afternoon, and that new editor is currently adding secondary sources in good faith as they were asked to do, it sure seems disingenuous to nom it so promptly. Just because an article has primary sources doesn't make it useless or solely promotional, especially if it has more than primary sources. Perhaps advising the creator of the article ways in which to improve it would be more productive than discouraging them altogether?Echoedmyron (talk) 20:53, 8 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Boston Derby Dames Corrections

[edit]

Hi! It seems we disagree on Boston Derby Dames Rankings in 2006, 2007, & 2008 as it related to WFTDA standings. In 2006, 2007, & 2008 leagues were ranked both Nationally and by Region. Please see titles of cited materials that state "National" rankings. You changed to be as "East", but this would be incorrect. Though they are considered an east coast team, the rankings cited were the National Rankings listings, so I have again changed those back to "WFTDA" rankings. In 2009, WFTDA began ranking solely based on region (no national or internation rankings) until 2013 when they began ranking Internationally. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.68.85.32 (talk) 22:01, 14 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I noticed you went back with new citations which I had not seen before, that's totally cool, and I will leave them as such. One thing though, is that the wikilink next to those numbers, the visible text now reads WFTDA, but it directs to the East Region article. So - if these are actually an overall WFTDA ranking, that designation in the table should link then to the WFTDA article (or possibly the Women's Flat Track Derby Association Rankings article instead). It's hard to find sources for early WFTDA rankings, good job on locating them. And nice to see someone take an interest in this article. Echoedmyron (talk) 22:05, 14 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I am really new here and don't really know all the in's and out's to wikilinks. Can you help to make the edits you mention? That would be fantastic! I was a founding member of Boston Roller Derby and also a founding WFTDA member. I skated with them for 7 years so I know the history well. Like you said, it's hard to find anything from WFTDA stating early rankings, so I did my best with other articles for reference. Just wanted to make sure people understood that WFTDA did start out with National Rankings, moved to regional, then to international. Trying to capture that history somewhere since WFTDA has done a poor job of it. Thanks again! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.68.85.32 (talk) 22:12, 14 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, can do. As an aside, did you travel to Toronto with Boston last season? Echoedmyron (talk) 22:18, 14 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks much! I did not, unfortunately. I do love those Toronto girls though!

I announce in Toronto, and also was in Omaha on the broadcast at D1 this year, was wondering if we'd crossed paths. I have made those edits I was suggesting to how the links were working - directing the first 3 years to the rankings article. If you have a WFTDA background, the main WFTDA article needs some work; I have worked on it periodically, but again the early years it's hard to find suitable links sometimes. I know a number of the WFTDA marketing people and have been meaning to bring it up with them - when I'm not busy doing other stuff! Echoedmyron (talk) 22:29, 14 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"This event occurred last season"

This means whatever event happened that season can't remain on the article for years to come.

Megacheez (talk) 18:20, 26 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You removed the fact that a player's number was retired (Griffey Jr, plus the citation); this is a permanent circumstance and as such should remain in the article. I do not understand why you think that should be removed? Echoedmyron (talk) 18:23, 26 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hey Echoedmyron, I created the page for the Caps-Pens rivalry, and for some reason, if the first "r" in "rivalry" is lowercase, it redirects to National Hockey League rivalries. If that same "r" is capitalized, it goes directly to the new page I created. Until "Capitals-Penguins rivalry" becomes no longer a redirect link, I think it's better to leave the link as "Capitals-Penguins Rivalry." I tried changing the name to make the first "r" lowercase, but wiki said I couldn't make the change. Do you have any ideas as to how to fix this so that I can rename my new article so that the "r" is lowercase and Wiki doesn't disallow the change? Thanks. Jewel15 (talk) 18:33, 30 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies, I hadn't realized that was a link and mistook it at first glance for a heading. I've undone my edit as a result. As for getting the redirects fixed so that the article may be renamed, that could be tricky, as it seems there are a ton of existing redirects due to various hyphen formats etc. May need an admin (or at least someone more experienced at undoing redirects and article moves than I) to untangle it. Echoedmyron (talk) 18:42, 30 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's cool. It's such a subtle difference that even I wouldn't notice if I were you (or anyone else, for that matter). Do you know how to contact a Wiki administrator? Jewel15 (talk) 19:20, 30 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I feel like there is a directory somewhere that lists admins by their specialties and willingness to be contacted for help. Not sure how to find that though. That said, looking at the edit history for the small r article, you can see who created that particular redirect: [3]. They might be the best person to start with for help. Hello. Retired in 1974 or 1975 ? Not sure the ref #4 (www.apsleyvoice.com) is right (1975) : according to the ref #5 (www.hhof.com) it's late 1974 (and it's in WHA not NHL). It is in 1974 too for nhl.com here : https://www.nhl.com/redwings/news/dual-citizenship-arnie-brown/c-631170 (but not sure they are talking of the whole career or nhl only). Supertoff (talk) 16:42, 7 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Fair point, I hadn't noticed that the HHOF ref contradicts itself. Considering that he played for the Vancouver Blazers in 1974-75, and he signed with them as a free agent in March 1975 (per ref #5, bottom of the entry under "Career") it would seem that they erred when saying 1974 in the bio. Also considering that he played 50 games for the Michigan/Baltimore franchise, and then 10 games for Vancouver that season (backed up by Hockey Reference and Elite Prospects as well, although I didn't link to them), "late 1974" would be an impossibility I would think. References for his brief WHA career do seem to be hard to come by, though. Echoedmyron (talk) 17:14, 7 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. (I didn't notice he signed in March 1975) I was wondering when had started and finished the WHA season. For me too, it seems impossible that he played 70 games before the end of 1974. Now, I have the answer according this: http://www.shrpsports.com/wha/ : the blades played 36 games in 1974. So 1975 is the good year, definitly. Supertoff (talk) 07:50, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Lennon ashes

[edit]

Thanks for letting me know it was sourced, however, I don't believe it's factual. Not even Julian knows where his dad is. Be that as it may, the trouble with many new Beatle books is that they have to have something new to say, which sometimes means making stuff up. I've removed several "sourced" statements in the past that I have first-hand knowledge of and know it's not true, particularly regarding recording sessions.Hotcop2 (talk) 18:37, 21 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If you have alternate information, you should probably bring that to the article talk page to discuss the details with other editors. On the talk page, there's a search function where you may search the talk page archives for previous discussion about his ashes to see if a prior consensus was reached. Also, you removed the parameter | resting_place = from the infobox, rather than just removing the entry about ashes. Echoedmyron (talk) 18:42, 21 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Thanks for the revert - I genuinely did not know that "Dead Men Tell No Tales" had also been marketed as "Salazar's Revenge". Thank you for thanking me! and for your recent post-edit; as in your previous revert, I am merely a casual fan doing copy-editing, while you actually know something about the sport and its history.

My two local teams seem to be dormant for the school year, and during the summer, they spent as much effort touting themselves for community service as they did as a sport. In the three bouts I attended, the ethos of "play everyone" seems to dominate over "win games," as we have a couple of great jammers but occasionally play jammers who have a lot of trouble staying on their skates. Another astonishing thing about researching and copy-editing the section on strategies is that we never seem to use them, though some of the visiting teams do. Spike-from-NH (talk) 16:21, 20 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed - for some teams strategies and competitiveness are secondary for sure. The game has evolved a lot in its relatively short modern history, and sometimes the strategies employed by higher-level teams take a while to trickle down to the local level. My league has appeared at WFTDA Playoffs in the past but after a couple of rebuilding years just missed the post-season cutoff this season. I'm heading to my fourth WFTDA Championships next month, where no doubt I'll see some new strategy that blows everyone's minds - and then we'll see it locally in a couple of seasons down the line. Tom Kurvers

[edit]

Regarding your last edit at Tom Kurvers – please read this discussion (specifically the last reply by Herostratus). Both formations are acceptable, but the "former American ice hockey player" seems to be the more correct one. – Sabbatino (talk) 22:30, 27 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Well, yes - Herostratus does in fact say towards the end "But it's OK if you don't; I'm not going to change it. I believe in letting the person who (after all) did the actual writing work be given a kind of stare decisis privilege in minor matter like this." I only bring that up as the "American former" (or "retired", in this case) phrasing had been in the Kurvers article since at least 2013 (I didn't look back further than that to see when it appeared) and when you did the larger (and quite useful overall) edits that was something that got altered.
I'm personally firmly in the nationality-status-occupation camp, as were many of the others in that thread. I mean, Herostratus basically posits that to them - using the text attributed to Forsyth - "[player name] "....is a legendary American hockey player" (sounds OK) versus "...is an American legendary hockey player" (sounds stilted).", to which I disagree, especially in the context of describing former players, which is what we're doing here. Now, if only there was agreement as to whether the word "former" or "retired" could be agreed as the go-to term, that I could really get behind! Echoedmyron (talk) 23:05, 27 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I guess you got a point about the "American former" formation being there since at least 2013. I remembered that discussion when I saw you changed it back and completely forgot what was written there. You can always start a discussion about the "former" vs. "retired" but I doubt anything will come up given the state of most WikiProjects... – Sabbatino (talk) 09:46, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I've thought the same about that latter point. Echoedmyron (talk) 14:35, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think you are misunderstanding my point on Montreal Canadiens. My objection is only with the "s" in Stanley Cups. I am perfectly happy with "Stanley Cup championships" or "Stanley Cup titles" as it does not pluralize a singular noun like "Stanley Cup". I've changed the wording to sound less clunky. Instead of "won the Stanley Cup 24 times" it is now "won 24 Stanley Cup championships" as is the case on the other team articles I was referring to. Cheers. -- TrailBlzr (talk) 01:48, 9 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Showed it to my significant other first, we both had a nice moment laughing about the fact that our kids would never write something so sweet about us... then I did the edit, but only to keep it encyclopedic. No need to respond - just wanted to share that funny moment. (also, thank YOU for all the work on ice hockey) Jmg38 (talk) 00:14, 15 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

is/was

[edit]

Hi there, do you remember making this edit on the Tenerife Airport Disaster article a few weeks ago? I thought it should say "was the deadliest accident", but you reverted and I came round to your way of thinking. Now I have made the same change ("was" to "is") in the World War II article and someone has immediately reverted me. Please see Talk — feel free to comment there if you want to fight my battle for me. I wonder, is there some guidance on this anywhere, in the MOS or some other tome of English grammar & style that we could use to back up our argument? BTW I am firmly of the opinion now that "is" is correct! Rodney Baggins (talk) 22:25, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the DYK correction on the List of NHL goalies who scored. When it popped up on my watchlist I didn't fully read it and didn't notice it was an old DYK from before, since I went straight to the source code. List of goaltenders who have scored a goal in an NHL game

[edit]

The edit about Martin Brodeur is factually accurate, it should not have been deleted and it needs to be noted that it's never been addressed. Video of the goal clearly shows that Brodeur was not the last player on his team to touch the puck and should not have been credited with the goal. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:569:F826:3600:F1AF:1AFF:8153:62AD (talk) 20:16, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Tricitylogo.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Tricitylogo.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. – Pbrks (t • c) 05:17, 22 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello - Please advise which item on Lee Smith to which you are referring as do not recollect any change in recent days. Thank You.70.27.24.7 (talk) 04:35, 7 May 2022 (UTC) 70.27.24.7 (talk) 03:59, 7 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You made a bunch of unexplained pointless edits to the article in September of last year, as noted clearly by the dates on the messages that were left on your talk page. I reverted the first set, and then you proceeded to keep doing it further, prompting another editor to leave you two warnings for being disruptive. The behavior subsequently stopped, so presumably the message was received. Now, since you don't use an account, there is the possibility someone else with your IP address did those edits, so you could always follow the links that were left on your talk page and create an account and edit productively. Larry Herndon

[edit]

You swapped out the photo I inserted in the Larry Herndon article. As part of the WP:BRD process, I would like to discuss your revert. On Wikipedia, we prefer images that (a) focus on the person's face, and (b) are from the time period of greatest significance. In this case, the photo I added fulfills both off those objectives -- it focuses on the face and is from his time as a MLB player. Your preferred image is a blurry full-body shot in which Herndon's face is not even recognizable and which also dates from well outside the period of Herndon's significance. Care to explain? For ease of reference, both images are included here:

Herndon face recognaizable 1977

vs.

Blurry Herndon face not recognizable 2012

Cbl62 (talk) 23:39, 10 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The image you used, the low resolution crop from a low quality Hostess card from the 70s, is blurry, far blurrier than the existing image. It has poor contrast as well. (Hostess card images are notoriously poor, and it always confuses me that they are eligible for use on wikipedia.) For some reason it also makes it appear as though his eyes are pointed in very different directions, and while the point of a wikipedia image is not necessarily to be flattering it's pretty bad - and to me, makes him unrecognizable. The image may give prominence to his face and be from his time as a player, but that doesn't make it superior to the full body shot of him as a coach in my eyes. Now I am just one person with one opinion, you can always start a RFC if you wish. Echoedmyron (talk) 23:48, 10 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

No worries! Looks like they posted an adjacent article that covered the strikeouts in addition to the stolen bases, and I think you probably meant to change the strikeout record and not the wins record. A lot happening all at once for Atlanta! Echoedmyron (talk) 15:12, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

United Airlines Flight 232

[edit]

Hello, I've just been looking into your revert of my edit on this article. My edit was simply based on the phrasing of the existing sentence, which still does not read clearly with the "and remains" clause. After reviewing the data however I think we're both wrong. My reading of the chart at Aviation Safety results in this ranking of most lethal United Airlines incidents:

11-SEP-2001 Boeing 767-222 N612UA United Airlines 65+ 900 [=965~]
16-DEC-1960 Douglas DC-8-11 N8013U United Airlines 84+ 6 [mid-air collision] [+44 other plane= 128 occupants+ 6 ground]]
30-JUN-1956 Douglas DC-7 N6324C United Airlines 58 [mid-air collision] [+70 other plane= 128]
19-JUL-1989 DC-10-10 N1819U United Airlines 111
06-OCT-1955 Douglas DC-4 N30062 United Airlines 66
24-OCT-1947 Douglas DC-6 NC37510 United Airlines 52

It's possible I missed something, as the chart does not indicate multi-plane incidents nor include the total fatalities of such so I had to look into them individually. But if this is everything, the 1989 incident therefor was:

- the third most deadly of all UA incidents at the time,
- the most deadly single-aircraft UA incident at the time,
- currently the 4th-most deadly of all UA incidents,
- currently 2nd-most out of single plane UA incidents.

It would remain most deadly single plane incident only if you consider the Sep 11th attack a multi-plane incident, which I think is wrong: while the hijackings were coordinated, there was no interaction between the three involved planes. This agrees with how they are treated in the aviation-safety.net source.

If these facts are all correct, then we need to consider the existing notability discussion (Proposed trivia) on the talk page, which would suggest only the "most deadly single-aircraft UA incident at the time", and perhaps "currently 2nd-most" as the prior position is already being mentioned, are notable enough to

Please do let me know if you think I've missed something in the data or you disagree with my interpretation, otherwise I'll go ahead and update per this conclusion. Walkersam (talk) 23:44, 28 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your investigation here is impressive, however you are barking up the wrong tree. The sentence in question says "it was the deadliest single-aircraft accident". Terrorist attacks such as 9/11 are by definition not accidents, as they are intentional acts. Echoedmyron (talk) 00:07, 29 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

American expatriate baseball players in Canada

[edit]

I think you hit on the worst expatriate Category. However you need to consider the issues. A-The first person in this catehory mainly played for American teams, he also played a season in Venezuela. This might border on performer by performance. I think we have excess categorization foe sports.

B. In some cases people go and play for a league based elsewhere. An American playing for the Nipon league will play in Japan. So here are some questions:

  1. How many MLB teams are in Canada? Is it more than the Toronto Blue Jays.
  2. How many AAA minor league teams are in Canada.
  3. This is where these categories really fall apart. If I was an expatriate American artist in France in the 1890s I would stay there year round for however long I was there. Do we have data on where these expatriate baseball players live when they are not playing. Do they mainly live in say greater Toronto while thry play for the Blue Jays. Or do they mainly live in the US and just go to Toronto duri g the active season.
  4. On the other hand, I would assume that they do some practice. Is that at least done in Canada. However
  5. I seem to recall that most MLB teams do soing training in Arizona or Florida? Where do the Blue Jays do sping training? I think this is a point you want to push home.John Pack Lambert (talk) 05:47, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I just realized it gets more fun. In 2020 and part of 2021 the Blue Jays played their home games in the US. They have been since 2005 the only MLB team in Canada. Even when the Expos were in Montreal that still mean most away games were on the US.John Pack Lambert (talk) 05:52, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Butch Alberts also played baseball at the University of Cincinatti. Although I removed it for being unsourced and do not see it mentioned in any sources linked, it appears he had a decade or so of a minot lead career, playing for a half dozen or so US teams. We know he was traded to the Calufornia angels, but it looks like he played minor league with their Davenport, Iowa affiliate. So it looks like if we consider his full intercollegiate and professional career, almost none of it was outside the US. This seems an unjustified Category indeed.John Pack Lambert (talk) 06:02, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Things are worse than I realized. Many of the articles in this category mention being in Canada or playing for a Canadian team not at all. One case I came across involved an article where the lead mentioned he played for the San Francisco Gians and the California Angels. Further down it said something about at some point being "pulled from the minors", but it did not ever name any minor team he played for, let alone when he played for them, so there is no support at all for the Canadian category. Which is an even bigger problem because these are by and large biographies of living people. We really should not be tagging biographies of living people with categories that are not at all supported by any mention in the text.John Pack Lambert (talk) 16:33, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • So I removed Greg Bargar from the category since there was no mention of him being in Canada in the category. I also removed him from the categories of several teams not mentioned at all in the article text. This was reverted with a note that he played with all the teams. No text was added to the article to support this. So he is back in the American expatriate baseball players in Canada category with absolutely nothing in the article mentioning this at all. He is alive. This is a major problem. I would remove him again, but do not feel like getting dragged into an edit war with an editor who is just plain ignoring the fact that Wikipedia categories need to follow rules of definingness, and they need to be verrifiable not true. You need evidence for all categories, at least at the level of mentions in the text, preferrably mentions connected with sources.John Pack Lambert (talk) 17:41, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
