Noteflight article deletion

Hi there -- you appear to have deleted the article on Noteflight on 17 February 2010. The reason you gave for the deletion was ‎"A7: Article about an eligible subject, which does not indicate the importance or significance...". For background, Noteflight is a free online music score writing program that is used by many musicians, kids and teachers, and many similar programs (both open source and commercial) have associated articles on Wikipedia. I would like to ask for your help in restoring the article so that an eligible author can resolve the issue, so that it does not need to be rewritten from scratch. Can you please assist? Thank you!

Jberkovitz (talk) 10:52, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi, Jberkovitz,
I've copied the text of the article to your userspace: User:Jberkovitz/Noteflight. As you can see, the article is a bit sparse. But the reason it was deleted is because there's nothing in the article that satisfies Wikipedia's Notability guidelines. If you can satisfy that guideline, be my guest at re-adding the article.
Thanks -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 03:38, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your help. SatyrTN. I see what you mean, the article is really thin (I didn't write it in the first place). I think a new one will need to be written from scratch and of course will need to conform to the Wikipedia guidelines.

Overcast deletion

The fact that Overcast is a band composed with Killswitch Engage's guitarist and bassist and Shadows Fall's vocalist gives the band enough notability, so to speak, to have an article in Wikipedia. It's been years since the last time I read the notability guide for bands and musical ensembles, but I'm sure if a band/side project is composed with notable musicians, it complies with Wikipedia's notability criteria.--Kmaster (talk) 10:32, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

Discussion on speedy deletion of Belgrave (band)

A discussion on the notability of the band Belgrave has been started at User talk:Blanchardb. I think it's only proper that you offer your two cents in as well given that you deleted the page. I'm arguing for the reinstatement of the page and want to use the proper channels to verify the band's notability. Thanks for the help. Trapper (talk) 21:42, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

PPI Assessment wants you!

hi, you signed up to help assess LGBT related articles on the project. (More of them need to be tagged as well.) But are you interested in assessing other articles? Because this project is a little bit different than other Wikiprojects especially in assessment. There is more information about it on the talk page but basically you would assess about 8-10 specific articles approximately once a month. Other people would assess the same articles and I will be doing some analysis of the assessments to learn things about article assessment in Wikipedia. Like do subject matter experts rate differently than Wikipedians? What is the best way to measure article quality? How does this article quality assessment compare with the results from the new article feedback tool? If you would like to be involved, you participation would be very appreciated. Please let me know on the assessment page or on my talk page. Thanks ARoth (Public Policy Initiative) (talk) 22:56, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

Welcome to Assessment with Wikiproject: U.S. public policy

Thank you for assessing with the PPI, assessing with this project will probably be different than assessing with other projects in Wikipedia. It's different because the many of the articles are stub, start, or C class, and we are not working to assess long lists of articles, but will have multiple reviewers assessing the same set of articles. We are looking for Wikipedians who want to take a more in depth look at assessment and help define what is article quality. Please go to the WP:USPP Assessment page to find more details and your assessment page with the first group of articles for you to evaluate. Thanks and happy editing, ARoth (Public Policy Initiative) (talk) 21:42, 30 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi SatyrTN, recently you signed up to help with assessment on Wikiproject: United States Public Policy. This project is probably different than other assessment drives you have worked on, it involves more assessment of lower ranked articles, it has input and staff from the foundation, and specific goals to improve and measure content of public policy articles. It also involves collaboration from some university classes, we are using an experimental assessment rubric, and most articles will be assessed by multiple reviewers to get a range of scores for each article. It's a lot to digest, and totally understandable if it's not what signed up for. However, there are also some exciting perks to this project: 1) your assessments are part of research that is attempting to increase credibility of Wikipedia in academic circles, 2) there is a great group of assessors involved in discussion of what is article quality and how to measure it, 3) WP:USPP is also piloting the Article Feedback tool, so those involved in assessment on the project will be asked to help improve and rate this tool as well, 4) subject matter experts are assessing articles alongside Wikipedians and comparisons of results will provide some insight as to the rigor of Wikipedia quality rating, and 5) other interesting benefits you will find with participation.
The first group of articles requesting your assessment has been posted. I was hoping to do a preliminary comparison of the data on 8 October 2010. The second assessment request, which is part of the same comparison, will go out about the same time. To help with organization, if you haven't posted any assessment scores on your assessment page by 8 October 2010, I will delete your assessment request and you will not receive further requests. I hope the unusualness of this assessment research does not discourage your participation; if you are not interested working in the research I hope you will continue to assess articles within the project. If possible let me know on my talk page if you don't wish to be a part of the research, or perhaps if there was some confusion or bad communication; what the public policy team, and I, in particular, can do to make it more positive for volunteers. Remember, I am new to Wikipedia and trying to learn the best way to research this project, to hopefully integrate the amazing resource that is Wikipedia onto more university campuses and classrooms. Thanks, ARoth (Public Policy Initiative) (talk) 22:38, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

Hey there,

Get in touch with Steven Walling about hosting a meetup on January 15th. It's Wikipedia's tenth anniversary, and he's coordinating the organization of local parties for the WMF. I'd love to attend if I can on that day. Keegan (talk) 06:56, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

WP:USPP, still interested?

SatyrTN, you signed up to assess with WP:USPP. If you are interested in public policy or assessment, check out your assessment page, because there is a lot happening on the project. Most of the recruitment for the assessment team was targeted, so I know you have a lot to offer to the research goals of this project. I posted the second assessment request and there will now be a weekly update on the project assessment page. If you are no longer interested in working on this project, I promise this is the last message you will get, but I hope you decide to check it out. Hi, EdChem! I'm afraid I don't have much to offer you on this article. Regarding your deletion of ClueNet

(Full disclosure: I wrote the original version that was eventually deleted back in 2007–08, I have a COI, and I am not the author of the latest incarnation of this page.)

I believe your speedy deletion of ClueNet does not fall within WP:CSD#G4, as stated in the deletion rationale.

Here is my rationale:

  1. The CSD was declined by another admin before you deleted it.
  2. Someone unrelated to me created the page without the original content. It is highly unlikely that it is "sufficiently identical."
  3. The page size was double what it was at the original deletion. I would not consider that "sufficiently identical." Note that CSD G4 does not apply to articles that are not sufficiently identical to the original.
  4. The fact that the CSD was declined means deletion would have not been uncontroversial (at least one admin disagreed with it), and as such, should be discussed instead of speedily deleted. Note that CSD does not apply if there is a demonstrated non-consensus.
  5. It was deleted because it had insufficient references. The fact that it has doubled in size means that the AFD reason for deletion still necessarily exists. It may still exist, but it would need to be re-evaluated at AFD. Note that CSD G4 does not apply if the deletion reason no longer necessarily applies.

-- Cobi(t|c|b) 01:06, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi, Cobi - thanks for the full disclosure :) I have to comment that your restoring the history caused me confusion when I was researching the article :}
My main reason for agreeing with the G4 is that the article *still* didn't have any references that led anywhere but back to the website in question, and therefore continued to fail the original AfD. While I realize the article wasn't *exactly* like the originally deleted article, it seemed (to me) to be substantially similar.
I'd also like to note that the CSD that was declined was for an entirely different reason - G12, not G4 - so that didn't hold sway in my decision.
However, I'm perfectly willing to step aside and let the community decide on the notability of the subject again. The original AfD was back in 2008, and consensus can change :) I'll restore it, but am going to put it up for AfD discussion.
Thanks for your reasoned request! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 05:26, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Dr. Michael Schwartz

Dear Sir:

We are very disappointed that you chose to delete the Dr. Michael Schwartz Wikipage. Dr. Schwartz has worked for the past 20 years as a Ringside Physician creating novel and critical testing protocols in Professional Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts in order to save lives. As you know, these fighters are primarily minorities and uneducated who rely on boxing to support their families. Dr. Schwartz has been the leading physician in the world protecting these individuals. Once again, boxing and those who participate have been dealt a "Black Eye" by your decision to delete this post. As such, once again, it just exemplifies the problem that most people dont care about these minority athletes nor anyone who is trying to protect their lives and spread the word of safety in boxing.

We hope you reconsider and add this post with the corrections necessary. We have also sent this note to Mr. Wales to see if he can help as well.

Thank you, Marny Samuels (AAPRP) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mbsdoc (talkcontribs) 18:54, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

I recommend reading Wikipedia's Notability Guidelines and Wikipedia's Reliable Sourcing Guidelines. If reliable sources can be found for Dr. Schwartz, feel free to re-create the article with those sources. I can't guarantee that it won't get deleted again, but it's much less likely to if you can prove that Dr. Schwartz meets the guidelines. -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 00:03, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

Comodo Backup Page

Hi, May I know why did you delete the Comodo Backup Page? I've have followed the guidelines and provided a lot of references to reliable published sources for that article. This is a freeware, no one is profiting from this post. Please advice. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Njwaterfront (talk) 15:14, 17 December 2010 (UTC)Njwaterfront (talkcontribs) 15:10, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi, Njwaterfront!
The article Comodo Backup was speedily deleted because an editor placed a {{db-spam}} on it. I then reviewed the article and found it to be mostly promotional material, and felt that it violated Wikipedia's Guidelines on Advertising. I recommend reviewing that page for tips on how to write an article about a corporation or product.
If you feel like re-writing the article, feel free to do so. I recommend, though, that you review Wikipedia's Guidelines on a Neutral Point of View and write it in a more neutral style. Another big help would be to include references and information from a third party - find and use news articles about the product. Reviews can also be used, but those are often simply propaganda pieces, which therefore fall under WP:ADVERT.
I hope that helps, and thanks for stopping by! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 17:25, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I've reviewed the Wikipedia's Guidelines on a Neutral Point of View and rewrote the article in a more neutral point of view, and has re-posted it. I will comply to rules and regulations in wikipedia, and is trying to contribute to the wikipedia community. Since this is a freeware, I am not trying promote anything or selling anything. Please let me know if further editing is required. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Njwaterfront (talkcontribs) 18:48, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

Hello SatyrTN,

I notice that on 12 January 2010 you moved 133P/Elst-Pizarro to 7968 Elst-Pizarro stating that the "Minor Planet Center recommends to list objects, both designated as asteroids and comets, as asteroids." Do you have a reference for that? I ask because both Hsieh and Jewitt seem to refer to the object more often by the cometary name. So 133P would seem (IMHO) to be the common name. Having written what I did I notice JPL only refers to the asteroid name even when you specify 133P. Which do you think we should use? -- Kheider (talk) 17:35, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

Hm - I don't know what to tell you. I don't remember that page at all, and I don't have much expertise with asteroids or comets. I'm actually confused as to how I might have moved that, since I don't think I've edited or moved *any* comets or asteroids! It looks like I was doing a few WP:CSD articles at the time, so I suspect someone tagged that article (and 4015 Wilson-Harrington at the same time) with a {{db-move}}. In fact, that's what happened - Chesnok (talk · contribs) tagged both of those with the move.
Since, as I said, I have little to no knowledge about the subject, that you contact Chesnok - or even WP:AST and/or WP:SOLAR - and see what they say? Sorry I can't be more help here! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 17:47, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
Doesn't Wikipedia have rules about using the common name (Articles are normally titled using the name which is most commonly used to refer to the subjec)? This could come to down to Wikipedia practices vs IAU/JPL practices. Google "7968 Elst-Pizarro" = 16,700 results; "133P/Elst-Pizarro" = 42,200 results. -- Kheider (talk) 17:56, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
You could be right - I honestly don't know what the "right" thing to do is :) -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 18:13, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
I have moved it over to Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Solar_System. Thank you for your input. -- Kheider (talk) 18:27, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

Canadian Forces Base Bagotville Cold Lake listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect Canadian Forces Base Bagotville Cold Lake. Looking at all the CFB moves you made, I know it wasn't on purpose and probably a mistake made from copy-pasting. Just thought the redirect to be completely unneeded, I'm sure it's deletion won't be controversial. Cheers - [CharlieEchoTango] 19:50, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Yes. The article in the category was moved to Category:Void (band) albums. I am questioning the move. The same happened to a bunch of other album categories. Rich Farmbrough, 00:42, 25 December 2010 (UTC).

Dancing Demon

You deleted the page I put up.

Dancing Demon was not unambiguous advertising.

There is nothing for sale. It discussed a classic game from 30 years ago that hasn't been on sale anywhere since, and run's on hardware that also is no longer available.

I am new to Wiki and it's rules, but I don't understand the logic of deleting an article about my all time favorite video game. It certainly seemed to me that that page is needed and a valuable entry to Wikipedia.

It's no less valuable then en.wiki.x.io/wiki/StarCraft

John.sokol (talk) 01:30, 25 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi, John.sokol!
I'm sorry that article got deleted. The article had two things missing that would have kept it from being speedily deleted. The first would be any information that indicated why it is important. For instance, if it were the first game created on the system? Was it a best-selling game? The second thing missing would be reliable sources that discuss the game.
If an article has those two things, it is not eligible for speedy deletion. Please feel free to recreate the article, but I recommend including those two things.

Eric Eskola

I'm wondering about the deletion of the Eric Eskola article. I went looking for some information about him, and only found peripheral references from his television program, etc.

As a somewhat casual Wikipedia editor, I'm not too overly familiar with the deletion process, but I see assurances that the information is not gone. I also see the rationale for the deletion (living person with no indication of importance or significance.

Since I can't find the content of the deleted article, I can't assess that critique.

1. How does one find the content of deleted articles, assuming you know.

2. Since Eskola is a journalist and television personality of some note (having hosted the premier political/public affairs show in Minnesota, Almanac for about 25 years, 'I feel the article should be undeleted.' In addition to the Almanac link above, here is a biography, and and one of many news articles discussing his importance.

Thanks.TjoeC (talk) 16:44, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

Hi, TjoeC!
The article in question was created without any references at all in it - and it was only four sentences. As such, there were two reasons for deletion - the first, as you said, was "no indication of importance or significance". The second reason is the Biography of Living Persons guideline. The refs you provided would satisfy the second criteria, as they provide some reference about a living person. The first issue, though, is the tighter one - if Eskola has only hosted a local TV show, he doesn't reach Wikipedia's Notability Guidelines.
I'm going to Userfy the article - so that it's in your personal user space. With that, you can work on the article to improve it, providing the references you indicated, and hopefully improving the article. However, you should know that any other user may mark the article for the deletion process.
Hope that helps! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 00:45, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

You are welcome to add a reference to the Economist article and move it yourself - there should be a "Move" option on the top right of your screen, near the search box. If you have any troubles, I recommend typing:

I made a post a few days ago at robotic infoboxes concerning the first attempt I had started, an proposed expansion of the current Template:Infobox_robot.

As no-one has replied I was hoping that if you had time you might be able to have a quick look and perhaps comment on the discussions page.

Hi, Chaosdruid!
Not sure what to say. What you've got going on looks good (except for that color yellow, IMO :). I suspect when you put it on a couple pages, you'll start getting more feedback as people close to the subject matter get involved. Personally, I'm a bit of a coder - so if you need help getting something to work right, maybe I can help - otherwise, all I can say is it's looking good :) SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 06:39, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

The yellow may be a little bold lol
The difficult bit will be the choices (AUV/UAV/Space etc.) - I would really like a simple way to get the different sections activated, maybe with something similar to a subst template, so will probably need lots of coding help with that!
I will let you know when I have the full version finished so you can take another look

Redundant category

Hi, regarding Peter Murphy (politician): how is Category:LGBT people from the United States not redundant to Category:LGBT state legislators of the United States? The first is a top-level category for the latter and therefore better excluded so categories are not cluttered, no? Regards Hekerui (talk) 14:27, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Hekerui!
People by nationality is a different tree from people by occupation. IMO, "Gay politicians from the United States" and "LGBT state legislators of the United States" are the overlap. But the LGBT categories are a mess - we split by nationality, occupation, sexuality, and even religion, so (especially with people) there's always some overlapping. --SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 17:13, 10 March 2011 (UTC)
"Gay politicians from the United States" and "LGBT state legislators of the United States" may have some overlap and you can nominate them for partial merging/deletion if you want, but both are subcategories of "LGBT people from the United States" so the inclusion of that category makes no sense - with it there is no overlap, only the inclusion of an article in a higher-level category when it's already in subcategories. I will remove this again to limit the number of categories per WP:COP. I'm sorry for posting on your talkpage, we should have put this on the article talk page. Best Hekerui (talk) 14:39, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi there. I would like to request a retrieval of the above deleted article together with its article history for some verification (i.e. sockpuppetry) purposes. Thanks. E Wing (talk) 00:56, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi, E Wing! I don't know that I'm going to be much help here. The article I deleted was created by Simplealexz (talk · contribs) on 2/11/11 and had simply one line of text:
Logan j Pynakker was born Aug. 16 1989 and never had a life. the end.
A month later, TboltHurricane (talk · contribs) created another version of the article, which you saw and asked for the speedy deletion. I'm unable to give you access to the history - I think you have to be an admin for that? But let me know if there's some other way I can help out. Stub articles question

Hey Satyr, I'm reviewing some of the B names . . . I know how to raise the rating, but some are definitely stubs. If so, should I remove them from the list after I've looked at them, or let them stay there? Textorus (talk) 05:26, 31 March 2011 (UTC)

And another thing: if an article on the list has been redirected elsewhere, like Barbara Gittings Award, should I remove the LGBT Project box from the original article's talk page, or leave it alone? Textorus (talk) 05:57, 31 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Textorus! Thanks for the help!
I've been removing the articles from the list after they've been reviewed - whether or not I changed the rating.
In general, I'm not in favor of having the project banner on redirect pages. The pages redirected to, yes, but not the redirect itself. Others may disagree, and I've noticed other project tags on redirects, but I don't think they serve a purpose.
Thanks again! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 18:42, 31 March 2011 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. BTW the Gittings award is redirected to GLAAD awards but does not appear on that page. Maybe it was renamed or something. I'll take the project tag off the old page, though. Textorus (talk) 19:40, 31 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi, would you mind taking another look at the article for rating purposes? I've added a bunch to it since you first checked it. Thanks. Harley Hudson (talk) 18:23, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Harley Hudson! I've upgraded the article to a "Start" class. My suggestion for what's next is to a) find some more sources, and b) maybe expand the "Peabody Award" section to be "Reception" or "Critical Reception" - a section I've seen in many TV articles that is a bit broader and would allow for more about how the show has been reviewed.
Thanks for writing! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 15:00, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

Would you please look at this article? I've just started editing though I've done some gnome work already. Thanks Pjefts (talk) 04:21, 9 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Pjefts! I've done a bit of cleanup on the article. I have two recommendations for your consideration. The first is minor - <ref> tags go directly after punctuation, so you don't have any spaces. The other is to consider writing in active voice instead of the passive - it's much more encyclopedic :) Hope that helps! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 07:06, 9 April 2011 (UTC)
Thanks SatyrTN. I obviously didn't know about the spacing so that's a big help especially since I like to add citations where I can. I appreciate the hint about using the active voice as I wrote I'm new to this.

Mind weighing in?

SatyrTN, I've seen you at LGBT-related articles (we've even talked a few times), and want to know if you wouldn't mind weighing in on this: Talk:Heterosexualization#Not only an LGBT issue. I posted a message about it at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject LGBT studies, which you may have seen already, but I hardly get any help from there or other WikiProjects these days. So part of my approach these days is to go to relevant editors individually and hope they weigh in. Flyer22 (talk) 18:35, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Wollaton Hall

Hey,

I've seen that you've deleted my entry for this article, but it's actually not a rumor. They've come out a couple times and explicitly stated that it will be shot at the Wollaton Hall. http://www.metro.co.uk/film/865934-the-dark-knight-rises-finds-new-home-for-batman-in-nottingham

I just used that source because that's where I first read it, but I just wanted to make it clear that it's an absolute fact at this point and probably slightly more accurate than some of the other facts I've read on this page (date wise). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.225.232.6 (talk) 15:19, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

WikiProject LGBT studies partnership with new WikiQueer project?

Greetings, I am the sysop and public representative for a new Wiki project, WikiQueer - specifically for the LGBTQ communities - that supplements the LGBTQ content on Wikipedia with other resources, talking points and information pertaining to the LGBTQ population. Essentially content currently not allowed on Wikipedia or articles that don't meet Wikipedia's notability requirements but might meet the notability requirements of a queer historian. Put another way - all that content some of us wished we could post but have had shot down too many times to keep trying. We will be soft launching in the next few days with a grand opening later this year. I am very interested in partnering and supporting Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation in whatever ways we can. A number of international, national and local nonprofit organizations and community leaders have already signed onto the project or are preparing to publicly join in the coming months.

I am hoping that as a deputy coordinator of WikiProject LGBT studies you can help us navigate a possible partnership. We're especially keen on helping convey that we support Wikipedia and are trying to expand on and enhance that experience rather than challenge or compete. In a number of ways we are attempting to promote and give due credit to the WikiProject LGBT studies and will continue to expand on those efforts.

Any feedback on the WikiQueer project itself is also appreciated. We're also actively seeking individuals within or supportive of queer communities to join our Global Advisory Board if you or others you know may be interested.

Thank you in advance for your time and I appreciate all of the great work you and other Wikipedians are doing!! --Varnent (talk) 07:02, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Hey Satyr, I trust your judgment and would rather ask you about this than get a jumble of replies from the Help Desk or wherever. I just substantially expanded In re: Gill with more info and sources. It's good to go as is, but there's an excellent YouTube video, uploaded there by the producers of In the Life, that explains the case and has an interview with Martin Gill. This is responsible journalism, and meets the requirements for reliable source IMO. Problem is, I'm not sure if WP:YT allows such an external link to the article or not. What do you say? Textorus (talk) 15:15, 9 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Textorus!
What you're looking for is a citation to In the Life, not specifically the YouTube video. It would be similar to citing News Hour or something like that. I don't know the coding for it, but hopefully that will point you in the right direction? Maybe you could use a {{helpme}} to get the coding? SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 00:42, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
Okay thanks, I'll see what I can come up with. Textorus (talk) 18:42, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

SatyrTN - I am curious as to why you have changed my entry on the listings for Gay and Lesbian people for Anthony Venn Brown - he hasn't been an evangelist for over 20 years now and resigned his credentials with the AOG back in 1991 . You said that my entry was a strange entry but Anthony Venn Brown is known these days as an author and an advocate for gay and lesbian people including Christian people - that's why I changed the entry Cheers Frollus (Frollus (talk) 03:03, 15 October 2011 (UTC)).

Hi, Frollus!
I think I misunderstood the link that was in there. The way it was written, the word "Author" was linked to the non-existent wikipedia page LGBT aadvocate. Event spelled correctly, there is no article for "LGBT advocate". And when I reviewed Venn-Brown's article, my mind skipped over the word "former" - sorry about that.
I've changed the "List of LGBT people" so that his entry reads "Author, former evangelist". I hope that works? Thanks! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 05:06, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

It seems to be potentially notable by quality of education and British establishment connections. Has educated a few famous sportsmen too (gold metal Olympics). LGBT cat

Hi there! Just a little question - why was Otto Peltzer moved out of the sportspeople cat and into the broader one? SFB 14:46, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi, SFB,
Peltzer was already in the "Gay sportspeople" category, and the "LGBT sportspeople from Country" categories are much less used (and, to me, much less useful) than the "LGBT people from Country" cats. Feel free to add him in to the "LGBT sportspeople from Germany" if you wish :) -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 16:42, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for clarifying that. Neither of those categories are very large so it does seem reasonable to keep them a bit higher up the tree. SFB 18:10, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Whether you think the category is useful or not, please do not empty out existing categories without seeking an WP:CFD consensus to do so first — especially when the tree has been in existence for almost three years already. Trust me, I'm not too crazy about some of the "LGBT occupation by country" diffusions either (like we ever actually needed to sort journalists or comedians that way?!?), but "I don't like them" isn't a valid reason to depopulate a category that doesn't have a broad deletion consensus behind it. *laugh* I wasn't actually being literal there; we did have a couple of tangles in the past in which you seemed far less concerned about the process than I did and just thought I was being prickly, but you never actually called me rude names or anything — I was kind of aiming for humour rather than literalism in that description, though perhaps I missed (which wouldn't be the first time.) No worries, at any rate. Bearcat (talk) 22:03, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

Lolz! Yeh, the humor didn't come across :) No worries! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 02:39, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
For what it's worth, I don't necessarily disagree with you in principle; I'm really more ambivalent (as my initial reluctance to make a decision either way probably made clear) than anything else. I can certainly see both sides of the argument — it's obvious to me that national subcategorization is certainly desired and seen as valuable by a lot of editors and deprecated by others, but I find it increasingly difficult to actually resolve that dilemma one way or the other.
Generally, I avoid creating such subcategories — but I also usually avoid deleting if other people create them, except in obvious cases such as someone recreating a category that already has a CFD deletion behind it, or someone creating a category that's obviously splitting the hair far too fine (e.g. Category:Gay UK MPs; yes, somebody did actually once think that Category:LGBT politicians from the United Kingdom actually needed a dedicated subcat just for the men who'd been specifically elected to the House of Commons, believe it or not.)
I think one place where our approaches differ is that you're mostly interested in the LGBT categories by themselves, whereas I'm a little bit more interested in how those categories are or aren't tied in across the category tree. For example, Category:LGBT sportspeople from Canada isn't just a subcategory of Category:LGBT sportspeople by nationality and Category:LGBT people from Canada, but also of Category:Canadian sportspeople, which means that a person who's browsing that category can access a crosslink tying it to the LGBT tree. I'm sure that, regardless of whether or not we agree on its necessity, we can at the very least both acknowledge that the crosslinkage is present if "LGBT sportspeople from Canada" exists, and absent if it doesn't.
At any rate, WP:OCAT does allow subcategorization by location as a diffusion method, and I don't particularly see how it's mutually exclusive with the existing subcategorization by L, G, B or T, either. It doesn't have to be one or the other, as far as I'm concerned; they can quite easily both coexist as different classification methods, and there are legitimate reasons why both groupings might be useful to different users for different purposes. Sometimes I might be looking to research the specific experiences of lesbian athletes, in a context where lesbian is more important than what individual country they're from; at other times I might very well be looking to research the experiences of queer athletes in Canada, in a context where I'm more concerned with Canadian than I am with which individual subset of the LGBT community they happen to be a part of. And if that second one is what I'm actually looking for, then my task becomes immeasurably more complicated and difficult if Category:LGBT sportspeople from Canada doesn't exist — because then I have to manually parse through a whole lot of articles to sort out which articles interest me and which don't, whereas if the category does exist then I can just go to it.
Which is why IMO the two don't contradict each other; they're both useful groupings for different purposes and can both exist without stepping on each other's toes. Bearcat (talk) 17:53, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
Interesting - you may have just given me the argument I was missing. Thanks :)
I can fully understand the "navigating the cat tree" argument from the nationality side, and I hadn't considered the visibility aspect of having, for instance, "LGBT sportspeople from Canada" under the "Sportspeople from Canada" branch. That makes sense to me.
My concern, when I think of that aspect, is the overwhelming number of categories that a single person would then be labeled with. Take Matthew Hall (figure skater) as an example - he's currently in two LGBT-related cats, "Gay sportspeople" and "LGBT sportspeople from Canada". With the method you're describing, he should be in one more - "LGBT people from Canada". And if we continue the category navigation reasoning, there should be 3 more - "Gay people", "Gay people from Canada", and "Gay sportspeople from Canada". That's a total of six, just in the LGBT tree.
To give you a better understanding of the direction I'm coming from, I seem to be a category minimalist. The way I would do it, if I were the sole director of Wikipedia (muah hah ha), would be to simply put him in "Gay", "Sports", "People", and "Canada". And then have the ability to intersect those categories in any way one wanted - "Gay sportspeople", "Sportspeople from Canada", or what have you. That would be ideal to me.
Given that this technology isn't there (yet), I'm resigned to the over-categorization that currently happens. So whatever happens with the CFD is fine - though I'm keeping an eye towards what *should* happen, IMO :)
I definitely agree that in the long term, that would almost certainly be the better way for our categorization system to be structured, and probably is the way it should really have been done from the start — for one thing, it would quite nicely preclude the endless back and forth that happens over the necessity, or lack thereof, of duplicate categorization, as well as allowing an article's categories to be far less obtrusive, and quite possibly giving far less room for people to create the truly silly categories. (Not to mention that I've seen, through the fact that a lot of my work lately has involved the categorization system, that some editors already think that is the way it works.) But yeah, you're right, we're not there yet and until we get there we just have to constantly figure out how best to manage the system we've got now.
For what it's worth, I'd argue that if a person has been diffused down to Category:LGBT sportspeople from Canada, then they don't need to be simultaneously filed in Category:LGBT people from Canada (ditto Category:Gay sportspeople vis-à-vis Category:Gay men) — under the current system, the subcat's primary purpose is to manage the size of the parent category, which wouldn't even be accomplished if the article was still filed directly in the parent category anyway. And doing it that way does also have the effect of managing and controlling how many categories have to actually be added to each individual article. Your alternate system would certainly allow a user to generate a complete category of all gay people if that's what they wanted — but in the system that currently exists, adding the subcategory alongside the parent, instead of as a replacement for it, just defeats most of the purposes of even having the subcategory in the first place.
And no matter what the final result is of this particular CFD, I'd definitely agree that we don't need to create double intersections for individual-subset-by-nationality (such as Category:Gay sportspeople from Canada or Category:Lesbian writers from the Netherlands). Individual-letter subcats should definitely remain at the international level with no further diffusion by nationality, and nationality subcats should definitely remain at the "LGBT community as a whole" level with no further diffusion by individual subset. Again, the better system would allow users to generate those narrower intersections if desired — but under the system that we still have to work with right now, creating them doesn't add anything of real value to the existing category structure.
Again, though, I do agree that "minimal" categorization by which users could personally generate the intersections that interested them, rather than having to directly create each individual permutation as a category in its own right, is probably the better way in the long term. LGBT terminology

Hi. Our paths have probably crossed a few times. I remember the TN part of your name because I lived in Tennessee for a couple of years in the 1980s.

I'm interested in LGBT concepts and issues, particularly terminology. I've joined the LGBT Studies project [4], and I've started a list of terms at [[]]. But I'm not sure that's the right way to get started, and I'm open to any suggestions you may have.

One thing that makes it hard to write about homosexuality - or anything related to it - is the shifting use of terminology. Does "gay" mean male homosexual, as in "gay and lesbian"? (What happens if we don't tack on Lesbian?) It even looks like LGBT started off as LGB.

More about me: In the distant past, I worked on "Gay gene", trying to make a neutral and comprehensive article about the then-controversial idea that homosexuality is inherited genetically and therefore immutable; I've also worked on "Reparative therapy", based on the still-controversial idea that homosexuality might not be 100% inherited and immutable. Then there's how (if?) homosexual and/or bisexual preference, desire, orientation, identity or "behavior" are related to their heterosexual counterparts: same as, same but different, different only because society looks at it that way, etc.

What's the best way to get started? Or is this not a good area for me to contribute in? --Uncle Ed (talk) 18:31, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Uncle Ed! I suspect we *have* crossed paths, though I can't think of a specific instance :) Since you're an experienced editor, you know that you can work on whatever articles strike your fancy! I should warn you that articles like Reparative therapy tend to be battle grounds, so take breaks often :) But feel free - the project's articles are fairly well tagged as ours, so look around at Category:Stub-Class LGBT articles, etc, and jump in where you feel called.
Thanks! And happy editing! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 18:36, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Van Dantzig

Got any sources to back up your claim that Rudi van Dantzig was gay? Mythic Writerlord (talk) 19:58, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

Well, his autobiography "For a Lost Soldier" is about his love affair with a soldier. I think that qualifies, don't you? -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 20:04, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
I think that's original research, isn't it? You gotta have a direct source... I've believed I read somewhere else that he was once in a relationship with a female ballet dancer by the name of Gaskell. But I'm not adding that either, because it would be original research untill I add the source. Can you find one? Maybe a personal life section would be appropriate. :) Mythic Writerlord (talk) 20:17, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
Gaskill was one of his first dance teachers. GLBTQ has a full biography of Dantzig, with references. I'll peruse those and see if I can find a better ref. -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 20:29, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. Because right now, I've read a lot about how he wrote about homosexual topics, but not "Van Dantzig was gay himself". I believe I read his last partner was a woman, too. Anyway, bisexual still falls under the LGBT category, but you need a source for it. That'd be great. 84.87.138.125 (talk) 20:34, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
Unfortunately, sources that would really be interesting are either pay-per-view or "snippet view", so I'm unable to get more than that. The DutchNews.nl obituary, though, is a reliable source that specifically says that he was gay. There are hints that the book he wrote about Rudolf Nureyev has a first-person declaration, but I don't have access to that book. -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 21:07, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

LGBT sportspeople categories

Hey there, SatyrTN. I've closed the LGBT sportspeople discussion with a keep decision, and now there's the thorny problem of putting back the entries of the categories you emptied prior to the discussion. Are you willing to put those articles back in those categories?--Mike Selinker (talk) 02:10, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

I will put the members back in their nationality subcats, but I'm taking the deletion to DRV. -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 02:14, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

LGBT people by occupation and nationality

I couldn't support killing off the whole tree, no. I still do agree that some of the subcategories aren't particularly needed; as you may recall, sportspeople was an edge case that I really had to struggle with before "voting" one way or the other, and I would probably still support killing "comedians", "journalists", "radio personalities" and "television personalities" as not really needed. But by the same token, I'd have to oppose killing off "musicians", "politicians" and "writers", since typically those are the things that constitute the most distinctively and relevantly unique aspects of one country's LGBT culture vs. another's; for instance, if I had to pick out the things that made LGBT culture here in Canada most uniquely Canadian, rather than generically international, I'd pick out things like Timothy Findley novels, the musical career of Carole Pope and the political impact of Svend Robinson.

Conversely, broadcasters like Jane Farrow or Rick Mercer are just people who happen to be queer, but whose cultural significance is quite "general interest" in nature and not LGBT-oriented per se, which is why the radio and television personalities cats are less useful. Being an "LGBT writer from Canada", in other words, is an aspect of Findley's notability in its own right, and being an "LGBT politician from Canada" is an aspect of Robinson's — whereas Mercer is both an LGBT person from Canada and a television personality, but the fact that he's specifically an "LGBT television personality from Canada" isn't really all that important.

I'd suggest maybe holding off for now, and instead initiating a project discussion to hopefully come to a better articulation of where such categorization is useful and where it isn't. But I don't agree that it's never useful or valid — some of the existing ones should be put out of their misery, certainly, but there are others that should quite legitimately be kept. Bearcat (talk) 01:00, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Bearcat! Thanks for your response! I agree that wholesale slaughter doesn't seem appropriate. And I would be in favor of a project-wide discussion, except that there are precious few of us involved in WP:LGBT at the moment. I'll post to the group, but if we don't get any/very much response from the group, would you be okay with me starting a CfD for comedians, then maybe the three media-related cats? Perhaps after that we can address sportspeople again? -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 01:25, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear SatyrTN,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 07:26, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Young June Sah --Yjune.sah (talk) 20:14, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

I am currently copy editing and amending Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky to improve the article's overall quality and ensure it remains an FA. If you have time, I would greatly appreciate your looking over the article and giving feedback. My aim, other than the stylistic goal of improving the writing quality, is to add information and sources to keep coverage of Tchaikovsky's life and music as well-rounded as possible. I want to remain as sensitive to LGBT readers and issues important to them, especially in how facts and phrasings about Tchaikovsky's life might be taken, and have very little experience in this matter. Therefore, I hope you will please help. Thanks. Jonyungk (talk) 21:55, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

LGBT directors

In The Advocate source in the article Greta Schiller, her relationship is discussed on page 64. I wasn't sure how to incorporate it into the article. SL93 (talk) 17:57, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

Per WP:BLP, putting her in the Category:LGBT directors needed a) to be stated in the article, and b) have a reliable source that backed up the statement. I looked at The Advocate article before I removed the category and didn't see her stating she was lesbian, but I obviously didn't read close enough - I see where she says that. I've added the information, ref, and put a WikiProject banner on the article. Thanks for your work! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 18:20, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited Paul Babeu, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page ABC (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Hi there. I have edited this article and have been expanding it incrementally. I see that you rated it start-class at the WP:LGBT scope. I don't know much about the criteria used, but I was to the belief that it would be at least C-class at this time. I'm not trying to call on your judgment, only trying to understand and learn what do I have to do to improve it to an acceptable level. Thanks. ZackTheJack (talk) 19:09, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi, ZackTheJack!
My main reason for going with "Start" instead of "C" class is length. If you look at some of the other "C" class articles on Greece and Rome (i.e. Catullus, Digamma, Roman numerals), you'll notice they're a *lot* longer and usually have more references. Truth to tell, the jump from "Start" to "C" is (usually) the biggest one. Hope that helps explain my rating, and Happy Editing! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 19:22, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Concerns are finished.--WillC 17:06, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

Credo Reference Update & Survey (your opinion requested)

Credo Reference, who generously donated 400 free Credo 250 research accounts to Wikipedia editors over the past two years, has offered to expand the program to include 100 additional reference resources. Credo wants Wikipedia editors to select which resources they want most. So, we put together a quick survey to do that:

It also asks some basic questions about what you like about the Credo program and what you might want to improve.

At this time only the initial 400 editors have accounts, but even if you do not have an account, you still might want to weigh in on which resources would be most valuable for the community (for example, through WikiProject Resource Exchange).

Also, if you have an account but no longer want to use it, please leave me a note so another editor can take your spot.

If you have any other questions or comments, drop by my talk page or email me at wikiocaasi@yahoo.com. Cheers! Ocaasi t | c 17:31, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Newsletter for LGBT Studies

Hi SatyrTN, can i offer help in doing a newsletter for this project to revive it a bit, or maybe just do some odd things to help out? Thanks and have a nice day Jenova20 (email) 10:31, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Jenova!
But of course! I haven't been all that active on-wiki lately, and certainly not active on-project... But if you'd like to whip up a newsletter, that would be great! Wow - it seems it's been a **LONG** time since we had one! Consider moving that page to Wikipedia:WikiProject LGBT studies/Newsletter archives/2009 1, starting a new one, and posting on WT:LGBT for input? Thanks! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 16:36, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
Done. Needless to say i don't mind sorting newsletters if you can teach me how. Thanks Jenova20 (email) 18:46, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
Sorting? -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 20:00, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
Putting them out? Should have worded it better lol. I'll chip in where i can, just tell me what to do Jenova20 (email) 20:03, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
Oh - no worries about that. Once it's written, there are bots that will deliver for us, so that's not an issue. -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 20:07, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
Don't you have a bot to deliver the welcome messages too? Thanks Jenova20 (email) 20:11, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
No - I have done them by hand, though I haven't done them in a while :) I think the last person I sent a welcome message to was User:Abster397 back in March of this year. WP in general has always had a "welcoming committee", believing that a real person delivering a welcome message is preferable to a bot doing it. And I guess the WP has been the same :) -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 23:42, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
It would be a neverending job to deliver welcome messages to all those new users, just as it would take hours to deliver a newsletter to 266 people without bots. Thanks Jenova20 (email) 08:17, 27 July 2012 (UTC)

Idea - you could try a tabbed interface on the project page to increase load times and keep it much cleaner. You could have main, members, watchlist, help, etc Jenova20 (email) 10:05, 27 July 2012 (UTC)

Hello Satyr!

I've been copy-pasting a message about Category:Gay Wikipedians but I've written this one out specifically for /you/ (you're one of the top contributors for the page on wikiproject LGBT studies). I feel that this (and similar) categories SHOULD exist in addition to lgbt wikipedians. Let me know what you think, Thanks! Ncboy2010 (talk) 13:10, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

PS. here's the Discussion.
Right, so.. I made the mistake of canvassing, but is it considered canvassing if there's a reason to contact people? IE: I'm letting the people who participated in the Deletion review of Category:Gay Wikipedians know that it's been relisted at categories for discussion. Although just to be safe, I've elected to stop (pending your reply). Thanks. Ncboy2010 (talk) 15:47, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

User:SatyrBot errors from 2007

Hi SatyrTN,

I realize this is pretty old, but I just wanted to make sure that this was brought to your attention. In a recent cleanup of {{oldafdfull}} that I am working on, I noticed that there were a few anomalies, so I looked into it and found edits like this. Now I don't think it would be worth it to try and fix the errors since many of them have been overwritten by other bots/users. I just wanted to let you know in case you ever used the same script again that it has a few issues. Thanks, LegoKontribsTalkM 05:39, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

Josephine Baker

I'd like to ask that you review the talk portion of the sexuality section on Josephine Baker's page. My discussion went off on a tangent with Malik Shabazz when it really should have included you as well. The Jean Claude Baker book on Josephine Baker seems biased and unacceptable. For example, he states at the beginning that he "hated her" and refers to himself eighteen times on the first page. Since he did not meet her until she was 52 it seems inappropriate to rely on his claims about her life when she was 20 or 30. The blanket statement "Baker was bisexual," written as if it indisputable, really has to go, don't you think? There is no evidence given except the claim of a fan who changed his name to hitch onto her celebrity. Doesn't this kind of TMZ gossip presented as fact diminish the biographies of people who have the courage to acknowledge their sexuality up front?Catherinejarvis (talk) 19:39, 7 January 2013 (UTC) 19:38, 7 January 2013 (UTC) 19:37, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

I appreciate your additions on January 9. The main question remains if any source existed before 1983, and therefore, which is not based on Jean Claude Baker's book. I'd be interested in seeing them. Best wishes.Catherinejarvis (talk) 19:44, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organized event (tour, function, meeting, party, etc.), but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. Epeefleche (talk) 22:54, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Wiki Loves Pride 2016

As a participant of WikiProject LGBT studies, you are invited to participate in the third annual Wiki Loves Pride campaign, which runs through the month of June. The purpose of the campaign is to create and improve content related to LGBT culture and history. How can you help?

  1. Create or improve LGBT-related Wikipedia pages and showcase the results of your work here
  2. Document local LGBT culture and history by taking pictures at pride events and uploading your images to Wikimedia Commons
  3. Contribute to an LGBT-related task force at another Wikimedia project (Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikivoyage, etc.)

Looking for topics? The Tasks page, which you are welcome to update, offers some ideas and wanted articles.

This campaign is supported by the Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group, an officially recognized affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation. The group's mission is to develop LGBT-related content across all Wikimedia projects, in all languages. Visit the affiliate's page at Meta-Wiki for more information, or follow Wikimedia LGBT+ on Facebook. Remember, Wiki Loves Pride is about creating and improving LGBT-related content at Wikimedia projects, and content should have a neutral point of view. One does not need to identify as LGBT or any other gender or sexual minority to participate. This campaign is about adding accurate, reliable information to Wikipedia, plain and simple, and all are welcome! If you have any questions, please leave a message on the campaign's talk page.

Thanks, and happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:39, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, SatyrTN. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi SatyrTN.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)
