Elaine Van Blunk

[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm Joseph2302. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, Elaine Van Blunk, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at the tutorial on citing sources. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Joseph2302 (talk) 09:06, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Joseph2302: I've added citations for that material now. I didn't add any inline citations initially as I didn't think it was material likely to be challenged (which is the standard of Wikipedia:Verifiability). Obviously I stand corrected on that point! Thanks for writing the article SFB 11:34, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Any Recommendation ?

[edit]

Hi Sillyfolkboy From PlainDonut Would you have any potential recommendation for a USER in the USA to assist in writing articles on USA Masters Athletics (Track and Field) ? Appreciate your input. PlainDonut (talk) 20:50, 15 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@PlainDonut: Hi there and pleased to meet you! I think you've made a very good start with Masters So Cal Track and Field Championship, and there are plenty more articles left to write in the masters space. In terms of getting to grips with editing, I find it very useful to check out existing articles and borrow their layout and style, particularly things like how to add tables, infoboxes, categories etc.
It is worth bearing in mind that there are Wikipedia:Notability criteria to meet. The knowledge you have on more local and low level parts of the sport may be deemed unsuitable for inclusion by other people, so it helps to focus on the better known aspects of the sport first. In terms of recommendations for what you could do next, we don't yet have an article on the USATF Masters Outdoor Championships. The article on World Masters Athletics Championships is a good example of an existing article that you can borrow the style from.
Just to let you know, we have a project page for people interested in writing about track and field at Wikipedia:WikiProject Athletics. The talk page is quite a good forum for asking questions and getting feedback or assistance. Let me know how you get on SFB 21:29, 15 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the reply Sillyfolkboy From PlainDonut We had four "false starts" (see list below) that we would like a more polished Wiki-article-writer to assist. The earlier Wiki reviews stated not Encyclopdic enough and not Notable enough. The Encyclopdic would require a better writer to assist with; the Notable we could add info on Olympians that have competed at these meets, and links to several newspaper articles. Does the mention of Olympian (such as on the Masters So Cal Track and Field Championship help with creating other similar articles ? Regards, PlainDonut PlainDonut (talk) 22:50, 15 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@PlainDonut: Ah... I see you have been down this avenue already! The regional meet possibly doesn't pass notability, but I think it was the wrong decision to treat the national competitions the same as the regionals – the national championships articles contained sources showing notability, which were not mentioned in the discussion. The deletion discussion in October didn't get attention from subject matter experts, for whom the notability of the 50+ years of the USATF Masters Championships is kind of obvious.
@Vanamonde93: can we still take you up on that offer to restore the articles to draft space? There is a solid case for general notability for the national level events. The regional level material could also be used as part of a broad article on Masters track and field in the United States, another topic with clear notability. Thanks SFB 23:25, 15 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Sillyfolkboy: I'm usually willing to provide a draftspace copy, but I need to know what article you're talking about...Vanamonde (Talk) 23:55, 15 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Vanamonde93: Apologies - these are the relevant deleted articles:
Thanks! SFB 00:11, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. Here you go: [12], [13], [14], [15]. Please note that the notability concerns should be substantially addressed, with the help of sources and information that weren't considered at AfD, before these are moved to mainspace again. Vanamonde (Talk) 02:11, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you both from PlainDonut I can add a list of Olympians, and some Newspaper citations. But I assume that additional cleanup might be needed.

Question: Next steps from my end ? PlainDonut (talk) 02:37, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@PlainDonut: I've updated the National Outdoors article with a lead section in the usual style and have added some extra citations from mainstream outlets. If you can find any further newspaper citations etc then that will help prove notability. You can continue to work on the article at Draft:USATF Masters Outdoor Championships.
Do you want to have a go at putting the list of meets into a table format? The style used at USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships#Editions is a good one to copy from. For each row of the table you have to precede it with a pipe and a dash |- then separate out the info for each of the columns with two pipes ||
If you want to add a list of Olympians who have taken part at the meet then that would be great too. I recommend doing that in a bulleted list, simply put each linked athlete name with a * at the start of each line.
In terms of formatting advice, references should go at the end of a sentence, after the period. You can look at the references I've added to the article as an example of the usual referencing style. The Help:Cheatsheet page is also really useful as a reminder of how the wikicode works. Let me know if you have any trouble and I can advise. SFB 17:04, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Sillyfolkboy:

Hi Sillyfolkboy from PlainDonut Thank you. I will be updating.

Question: If I find some "Newspapers Reviews" about the meets ... does something like I did in the following draft work for this Masters Outdoor Championship Meets as well ? USA Outdoor Article done

[edit]
@Sillyfolkboy:

Hi Sillyfolkboy from PlainDonut 1. Many updates completed on the USATF Masters Outdoor Championship draft/article. Recommended next steps ? 2. Separately I have begun compiling additional items (and creating a Years / Location table) for the USATF Masters Indoor Championship which would be a separate future-draft-article. Indoor will include lists of Olympians, NFL athletes, and age-100+ athletes.

Please advise. Regards, PlainDonut PlainDonut (talk) 19:44, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@PlainDonut: Good job on the clean up and expansion! I've done some further formatting and condensed some of the sections together to avoid overly short ones. Note how I've reworked the material in Newspaper Quotes into a Media coverage section instead. It's better to summarise how the media have responded, rather than share just the quotes. I've moved the article back into mainspace at USATF Masters Outdoor Championships as I feel this is more than ready.
Draft:USATF Masters Indoor Championships is now available too to work on in the draft space. I suggest you work on that one next, using the outdoor article as a model to follow.
Note that I've spun out some of the more general masters info ("Other Masters Track and Field Competitions" section and the list of external links) to Draft:Masters track and field in the United States. That will be a good high level article to gather coverage of the history and competitions of masters track in the U.S. once you've finished up with the indoor championship. Keep it up! SFB 21:52, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Sillyfolkboy:

Very cool. Thank you. PlainDonut (talk) 22:28, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Sillyfolkboy:

Hi Sillyfolkboy from PlainDonut. The "Draft:USATF Masters Indoor Championships" has been updated and uploaded. Would you have time to review ? Thank you, PlainDonut. PlainDonut (talk) 01:54, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@PlainDonut: Just did some extra formatting clean up, added a few more media citations, and have now moved to mainspace at USATF Masters Indoor Championships. Good work! It's worth having a think about what you can do next. If you can locate any info on the most successful athletes per event or the championship records (like we've gathered at USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships) that would be useful to add to these articles.
As I mentioned before, there is scope for a broad article on Draft:Masters track and field in the United States, covering the history and what competitions there are etc. I can see from the USATF website that there are plenty of other US masters championships competitions that haven't been noted on Wikipedia yet. I'm not sure if the other competitions have sufficient notability for their own articles (possibly the cross country one does?), so it could be good to summarize them on the broad-scope article first. We don't have any national-level articles on masters track and field yet, but Athletics in Australia is a decent example of what that kind of article could look like. You could also include things like a list of American winners at the World Masters Athletics Championships for example.
Another possibility would be something like Draft:List of centenarian masters track and field athletes, as I imagine there are only a limited number of people who compete in that age group? Let me know if you want to bounce any ideas off me SFB 19:36, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Sillyfolkboy:

Hi Sillyfolkboy from PlainDonut. THANK YOU. This week I have also been updating several other Wiki articles. Masters So Cal Track and Field Championship, National Association of Amateur Athletes of America, and Draft:Spalding Athletic Library (2). Let me ponder (consider) next steps. Thank you again. Lebogang Phalula

[edit]

Hi there, I've been looking into this change that was made recently to Lebogang Phalula. I must say I didn't realise it when writing the article but it appears they're twin sisters according to sources, see e.g., https://www.news24.com/news24/Archives/City-Press/Phalula-twins-double-trouble-20150429 and https://www.iol.co.za/sport/athletics/phalula-twins-aim-for-tokyo-via-cape-town-31817352. Would it be ok if I undo your change and check both articles so that the information is correct in both? Thanks, Simeon (talk) 00:32, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Alternatively, it could become an article about the Phalula sisters but they do both appear notable for their own article. - Simeon (talk) 00:36, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Simeon: Good spot! I was too hasty to draw a conclusion there! I've reverted the merge here and on Wikidata then added the twin info. Thanks for the heads up! SFB 13:39, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks, it's looking good! Thanks also for your other work on adding navigation templates to other articles that I happen to have on my watchlist :) - Simeon (talk) 13:47, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Simeon: Seems I wasn't the only person to confuse the sisters, World Athletics listed both sisters' 2006 Commonwealth Games results under Lebogang. I've advised them of the error now. We also had mixed up links here in some articles so I've fixed that too (e.g.[16]).
Thanks for all your article creation work! I'm updating the last bits of international and national champion data from the GBR Athletics website at the moment, hence the flurry of new incoming links.
It has shown me that we need to develop better ways to store champion and medallist data because there is a need to repeat it in multiple locations. Ideally we should be able to add a piece of data somewhere, then draw upon it to populate, for example, Template:Japan Championships in Athletics women's 100 metres champions, List of Japan Championships in Athletics winners (women) and List of 100 metres national champions (women) (and perhaps even down to the edition level at 2020 Japan Championships in Athletics, international competition tables on biographies, and even new sub-topics like 2020 in the 100 metres). There are ways to achieve that using Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons tabular data, but I'm not 100% sure on the best approach yet. If we migrate data there, we will be able share our efforts across languages too! SFB 14:32, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that! It's a long way away but I'm hoping at at least one of the components in Abstract Wikipedia can be used in the future for that purpose. A lot of that project seems to be focused on article creation but it seems we should also be able to generate parts of articles easily. For medals of an athlete, we should be able to generate the infobox and a table within the article using, say, {{ShowAthleteMedals|Q123123123}} where `Q123123123` is the athlete's Wikidata item. It should be similar for generating a navigation template for national championships. Any updates in Wikidata would then be reflected both in navigation templates and athlete biographies in any Wikipedia project that is tied to Wikidata :) - Simeon (talk) 14:46, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Simeon: Honestly, the technical structure is already there without Abstract Wikipedia. For example, see how the cycling project at French Wikipedia already leverages Wikidata to populate fr:Tour d'Espagne 2019 using fr:Module:Cycling race. My primary concerns are around how we implement these things in a way that allows people to easily update Wikidata, and that has a robust data structure. The last thing I want to see is (a) people excluded from adding data, and (b) a messed up initial data structure that we have to constantly build workarounds for. The latter point takes up basically 50% of my time professionally so there are huge, long-term effects if we get that wrong! I could probably draft some code to do the medal stuff, but already that raises the question of whether we want medal data to be stored distinctly from result data... American Centenarians that have competed in Masters Track and Field

[edit]
@Sillyfolkboy:

Hi Sillyfolkboy from PlainDonut. Initially I will look at "American Centenarians that have competed in Masters Track and Field" in lieu of the entire international list. I have jotted some notes down on the DRAFT page, but I still have lots of work to do on the page. I should have some time this week to take a "college try" at this. Draft:List of centenarian masters track and field athletes Regards, PlainDonut PlainDonut (talk) 03:03, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Sillyfolkboy:

Hi Sillyfolkboy from PlainDonut. Regarding Draft:List of centenarian masters track and field athletes Some progress has been made to the article this week. Possibly need to rename "Centenarian masters track and field athletes" or something similar. I will see if I can spend some additional time working on this article the next couple of days (if time permits). If you have time later in the week please take a look. Thank you, PlainDonut PlainDonut (talk) 01:52, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@PlainDonut: I think you can probably structure this information better in a table, with a short description of achievements. So to take the first few athletes from the American list, you could present it in a table like below:
Athlete Peak age Year Nationality Division Event(s) Achievements Reference Video
Larry Lewis 101 1968  United States Men 100-yard dash Potentially the first American M100 athlete (age 101) running the 100 yard dash in 17.8 at Cox Stadium during the spring of 1968. This mark was never ratified. [NMN June 1987] [NMN Jan 1999][1] [2] [3]
Margaret White 101 1994  United States Women Shot put, discus Potentially the first American W100 athlete (age 101) competing July 30, 1994 in the shot put and discus. It appears that these marks were not submitted for ratification for records. [SAR 2006]
Ben Levinson 103 1998  United States Men Shot put Potentially the second American M100 athlete (age 103) competing in the shot put at the Nike World Games (Eugene, Oregon) on Aug 11, 1998. From Los Angeles, California, he was later interviewed by Jay Leno on the Tonight Show. [NMN Jan 1999] [NMN Oct 1998][4] [5]

[6]

Bill Finch 100 2012  United States Men
Everett Hosack 101 2003  United States Men (NMN May 2002)[7][8]

This should make the information more easy to navigate for readers. Do you want to have a go at add this table to the article and putting the rest of the athlete data in that format? Not sure if there are any additional columns you think need adding, such as age group for example? SFB 19:14, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Sillyfolkboy:

Hi Sillyfolkboy from PlainDonut. THANK YOU. Masters Athletes typically compete in MANY events (different than the professionals). So the Event column makes sense for Records, but maybe not individuals. Let me ponder (think about) some next steps. Regards, PlainDonut PlainDonut (talk) 21:19, 27 January 2021 (UTC).[reply]

@PlainDonut: Good point. If there are many events for some but specific events for others, you could just put "Various" for those that do many, otherwise you could just omit event from the columns and leave any record detail to Achievements column. SFB 12:05, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sillyfolkboy from PlainDonut. Draft:List of centenarian masters track and field athletes (A) Events: I have included "Sprints", "Distance", "Field", or the actual events if only one or two. Probably one more day, then I will be "completed." Thank you. PlainDonut. PlainDonut (talk) 16:52, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@PlainDonut: Hello! I think the draft looks to be working out as a combination of two separate things - an article focused on centenarians in track and field, and records set by centenarians. I think the information will be more easily presented if we spin off the latter into its own article as well: Draft:List of centenarian masters track and field records. This could include the current world records for the M100, W100, and M105 categories, plus a section for the American record info you've gathered so far in the draft. You can copy the rows on those categories from the List of world records in masters athletics page – that page is probably too large as it is so a list dedicated to the centenarian categories is warranted. This will allow for a more focused presentation of info, with one article focused on the specific centenarian athletes, and another focused on records. Let me know what you think! Lesser Britian

[edit]

Regarding this I must say that it is only partly true and partly wrong. While it is true that in the middle ages Bretagne and Grand Bretagne appeared as counterparts, in the Roman geographers' texts, the Makra Britannia was Great Britain and Mikra Britannia was Ireland. Only much later did the "Small Britain" migrate across what was still called the Britannic Ocean to Amorica, when some Britons themselves migrated there. Mariko Kobayashi redirect to Yuriko Kobayashi: why?

[edit]

Hello! I accidentally stumbled upon the Yuriko Kobayashi page just now while looking for a voice actress by the name of Mariko Kobayashi. Is there any evidence showing that Yuriko has ever gone by Mariko? At any rate, I don't know much about this runner, but it does not seem to be the same person, and I want to make sure this is a significant use of the name in order to merit the redirect page. Thank you, Londonbeat41692 (talk) 11:28, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Londonbeat41692: Looking at the timestamp from my edit, almost certainly I created this redirect due to finding the athlete listed under this name in relation to the Inter-Prefectural Women's Ekiden (which I would have been in the middle of writing at that point in time). It doesn't seem to be a common variation so possibly an error in result translation into English – a google translation of the Japanese Wikipedia page also mistranslates Yuriko to Mariko. There are no incoming links for the athlete at that target, so feel free to replace the content with an article on the actor or delete it if you feel it is inappropriate. Thanks! Stats

[edit]

Hi SFB. Would you say something like this is fine, or a clear case of WP:NOTSTATS? Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 13:54, 10 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Lugnuts: I've previously discouraged the creation of articles just for yearly rankings for the same reasons when Darius Dhlomo created a series of lists now gathered under Category:Year rankings in athletics. However, I think yearly summaries of certain athletics events remains a perfectly valid article type. I've done some expansion to show what kind of material we can add to better cover the topic.
@Kasper2006: I encourage you to add in details of competitions and major happenings in the event that year, as well as the yearly rankings. The scope of the topic can be everything about the 100 metres that year, not just the ranking
Athletics is highly unusual in being an umbrella for many different sports. As an article subject, I don't see any distinction between something like 2009 in the decathlon and 2009 in modern pentathlon; the only practical difference is the governance of those sports. I have generally avoided doing work on yearly articles myself because the sport is very large and the athletics editor base is not so large, but definitely I think this type of work is valid and valuable (especially so for the 100 metres and marathon, which attract the most interest from readers). SFB 20:41, 10 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I see you created a template for AG 100m medalists, saying "centralise medallist data for re-use" I'm just curious in which article you possibly want to re-use that? beside that there are other ways to do that instead of creating multiple templates. and most importantly (for myself) since I created all List of Asian Games medalists in XXX articles I really like them to have the same format. I really don't think having this template (and possible future templates for other events) is necessary, what do you think? thanks. Mohsen1248 (talk) 16:35, 13 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Mohsen1248: Hi there and Glad you asked! My recent changes are a response to this question about the problem of extensive lists of medallists on event articles (e.g. 100 metres), plus this question on starting a list of sprinters. In response, I am building a new list type at Draft:List of international medallists in men's 100 metres.
There are at least three potential locations to use these templates – in the example template of the Asian Games medalists in men's 100 metres, this data should eventually feature on List of Asian Games medalists in athletics, List of international medallists in men's 100 metres, and 100 metres at the Asian Games. This kind usage is already in practice for Template:Olympic medallists in men's 100 metres, which I created some years ago, on List of Olympic medalists in athletics (men) and 100 metres at the Olympics.
I appreciate that my edits introduce some misalignment of styles for the Asian Games list. The medalist list styles are already misaligned across various games and championships, so I started at event level because it's not practical for me to align them all at once.
The principle change I made to the Asian Games list was to add the "details" link to the 100 m event page (where available) and removal of the host city from the Games column. Otherwise, I have merged other data sets to the Asian Games list style. I would appreciate some input on the style! Honestly, I am neutral on the inclusion of the host city or not in these lists – it feels a little redundant to me to list that each time but we already have a mix of styles feel free to restore it if you think it is relevant enough and I can add it to the others on the draft list. Ideally this centralisation and standardisation will make it easy to load the data into Wikidata at some point and share this dataset across languages too. Let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions! SFB 21:05, 13 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your answer, that explained your reason completely. I think the style you made is good for the page you are creating. I mean compact, no cities, etc. but yet for the Asian Games pages I think it's necessary to have the host city, for the same reason we have them for the Olympic page. in these games we mostly remember them by the host city, while the page you are creating is a different thing and I would prefer a list with the medal winners. I'm not sure if I explained myself good enough here, sorry my English is a bit limited. but I have a suggestion, what about this. keeping the template and possibly using that in future page for 100 metres at the Asian Games but still using the old format for the List of Asian Games medalists in athletics page. to keep it in the same format as the other AG medalists page, what do you think? Mohsen1248 (talk) 21:45, 14 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Mohsen1248: I agree that the cities are much more important for multi-sport events, and make sense for the games-specific lists. I've restored the host cities to the Asian Games template.
In terms of differing the data presentation between the pages, this will be simple to achieve when the data has been migrated to Wikidata, but it is complex to achieve via Wikipedia templates. I'll just leave the host cities in the existing data for now so they show on all the games pages and keep things aligned. Thanks! SFB 15:17, 16 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Felipe Bardi dos Santos

[edit]

"If people would spend half the effort they wasted trying to delete content and instead use that time to improve content, wikipedia would be a whole lot better for it."

Because of your great contributions, Athletics articles are far better, thanks for that. A lot. Thank you also for moving Felipe dos Santos (decathlete) to a better title. In fact they share the same family name (Brazil last name is always the very last one). Bardi is his mother’s name, part of the full name. In fact, I would prefer to get a Felipe dos Santos (sprinter) and also a special homonym page Felipe dos Santos. Because those 2 athletes from the same country share the same name and surname. But Dos Santos is a so common name in Portuguese-speaking countries that very often newspapers write only Bardi (to distinguish him more easily). At the moment, the homonym page doesn’t exists. What is your opinion? thank you very much again.--Arorae (talk) 16:52, 15 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Arorae: Thanks, I do try to give good coverage to sportspeople so that their achievements are recognised! Indeed, the naming is difficult given the common usage of Santos! but lots of local sources are using the maternal surname so I think that is a better title (e.g. [17] [18]). I have added the redirects for other names. I'm happy to discuss a move of the article if you think that is better, but in my opinion I see the sources using "Bardi" a lot so the article title is better with Bardi than without it. The infobox of an athlete who practices the sport of athletics

[edit]

Dear SFB, I ask you something of you who are much more experienced than me. In {{Infobox sportsperson}} should at the sport parameter not be indicated the sport practiced by the athlete (for example athletics) and not the specialty (for example sprinting), which if anything should be inserted in the event parameter? There is a user who does not think so, look at this revision history. Thanks --Kasper2006 (talk) 17:24, 16 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Kasper2006: Normally I put either athletics or track and field in the "sport" field of infoboxes for athletes, though I have seen many with things like sprinting or the specific event for certain disciplines (e.g. pole vault). In general, I side with you on how this should be populated. To be honest though, it is quite a minor point and doesn't make a big difference to readers, so I don't think it's worth the time having an argument or edit war over it . My general philosophy is disregard such minor differences because having conflicts about them make the whole process of editing a lot less productive and enjoyable! Lausanne, Italy Diamond League 1996 Mens 200 meter video

[edit]

Good day,

You seem to be a good source of track and field knowledge. I am searching for a video of the 1996 men's 200 meter race. The Diamond League meet was held in Lausanne, Italy. The guy who won the race was Ato Golden from Trinadad and Tobago.

Thank you for your help.

John PlanetHouston (talk) 21:18, 3 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@PlanetHouston: I don't have a video archive of athletics events and the 1996 meet doesn't seem to be available publicly, so my best advice is to ask the organisers if they have any info. You can find them on facebook at the following address, Thanks! https://www.facebook.com/athletissima/ SFB 01:43, 4 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This user remove all ANA Medals from Athletics Table :

for example:

http://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=2019_World_Athletics_Championships&type=revision&diff=1034317875&oldid=1034314370

Dear Sillyfolkboy, your comment and recent REVERT are very disappointing ("Undid revision 1034317875 by Arorae (talk) - there is no need for Wikipedia to exactly mirror official sources - this fact is already noted on the page and ANA is unranked for this reason. There remains reader and historical interest in displaying ANA medals in this manner").
you have simply forgot our basic principle : NO ORIGINAL WORKS, never WP:NOR.
if the IAAF (now WA) does not indicate ANA athletes in its official Medal Tables, we cannot do it. of course, for the general info, we can add a note that indicates the reason, as WA does. But I totally disagree with your move and comment.--Arorae (talk) 16:41, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
and befofe your "silly" revert (joke), I have already opened a discussion here, the place to discuss before not respecting rules.--Arorae (talk) 16:51, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

this section is not correct. This table is incorrect and needs to be corrected. 729 gold and 741 silver. I put all the tables together. Check and modify it. There are many mistakes in counting the medals of countries. Also, 2021 medals should be added to it.

WP:AFC Helper News

[edit]

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.

  • AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
  • The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. Notice

The article Xiaoliang has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Same problems as Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mengjie and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Baoshan (given name) – no notability or navigational value for these articles about transliterations of multiple Chinese given names.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

Also:

This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to the history of each individual page for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 09:00, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Page you created, would like to add a word to the title

[edit]

Hello Liam, You created a page for my Dad, Dave Steen (shot putter) He would really like it if it said - Dave Steen (shot putter, novelist). My name is Laura Jane, I am his eldest daughter. I edited the page a few years ago to add that he actually had a family and kids (as my mom was kind of upset it only reported his very short lived first marriage). However I can not figure out how to simply change the title by adding the word "novelist" and since you are the creator and obviously extremely experienced I'm hoping you can help me? Also we are curious to know what prompted you to create his page? Hope this finds you well and thank you for your time and contribution to my dad's legacy by creating this page. Peace Laura Jane Laurajanejones22 (talk) 19:50, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Laurajanejones22: Hi there! Thanks for making the additions. In terms of "shot putter" in the article title, these are added only to disambiguate from other people of the same name and must be brief and focus on the principal reason for notability. In Dave Steen's case, he is most publicly known as a shot putter, hence why it has this title. I have added details of his writing to the lead paragraph to highlight his post-sporting career.
In terms of the personal life section, Wikipedia requires reliable third party sources to include any information. I only found sourcing regarding his first marriage when I wrote the article. I have not found any sources for the additional material you have added. The best approach for creating a usable source for this is to ask your Dad to include it on his personal site at https://bicyclestory2020.wixsite.com/ - I imagine the most natural way to do that is to write a short author biography page on the site. Then I can use that page to provide a source for the information here. Without a source, this info will have to be removed again because we have no source to verify that it is true. Let me know if you can get this done SFB 16:18, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Footer Commonwealth Champions 4x100 m Men/year

[edit]

Hey, this edit changed Template:Footer Commonwealth Champions 4x100 m Men and made the "/year" template unused. Since this is a very different version I'm making sure this is correct. Gonnym (talk) 06:47, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Gonnym: Hi there! Thanks for the message. I have observed a trend towards including links to all winning team members in such footer medalist templates across Wikipedia. Personally, I think this design creates large templates with extremely low value links – I don't think a person exists who would like to navigate from 1950 gold medallist David Johnson (sprinter) and 2012 gold medallist Jona Efoloko and I strongly suspect I am the first person in history to think of those two people in sequence. The old year sub-template model emphasised the links between the specific relay team members only, which is a much higher value link and a more likely next page for readers. I'm happy to support a discussion on this subject if you want to start one, the Olympics WikiProject is probably the best place to start. Previous discussion to include all the links occurred at Template talk:Olympic champions 4 × 100 metres men. SFB 22:46, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I won't start or really participate in any discussion on the matter as it isn't my area of editing. I come to this template seeing as it was unused and showed up in a report. I usually just send these to WP:TFD but because the layout was completely different I left you this message first. Let me know if you plan on restoring it. Gonnym (talk) 07:52, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Gonnym: Sure, no problem. The subtemplate can be deleted as redundant in that case. Cheers! SFB 14:57, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello I'm trying to use template:Flag link team in European Athletics Championships results pages and I've ran in to the problem that the naming scheme for the pages it links to is wrong. So for instance  France (FRA) does not work as it is trying to go to the article France at the 2012 European Championships in Athletics when it should be trying to go to France at the 2012 European Athletics Championships. I was wondering if this is something that could be changed as the alternative is hundreds of redirect pages. Oh after checking the redirect pages when using this for 2010 European championships it does seem that you are the creator of many of them. I don't feel its viable to create 50 redirect pages every time the championships happens but if it isn't possible to change the format in which the template links to pages I just wont use it. Please let me know if the change is possible, thanks! Brandon Downes (talk) 19:55, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
