List of locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal
Hi Rod,
Nice job in getting so many articles up to featured status! I was just reading the article List of locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal that you got up to featured list status back in 2006, and I was wondering if you might clarify something for me. The lead of the article states that there is a total of 105 locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal, but the table numbers the locks 1-107. Where are the extra two numbers coming from? I see that one entry is listed as "8/9", so I thought that might mean that one lock has two numbers, but there is still another number to account for. Any help in clarifying this matter would be greatly appreciated.

WikiCup 2015 launch newsletter
Round one of the 2015 WikiCup has begun! So far we've had around 80 signups, which close on February 5. If you have not already signed up and want to do so, then you can add your name here. There have been changes to to several of the points scores for various categories, and the addition of Peer Reviews for the first time. These will work in the same manner as Good Article Reviews, and all of the changes are summarised here.
Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round, and one of the new changes this year is that all scores must be claimed within two weeks of an article's promotion or appearance, so don't forget to add them to your submissions pages! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! Suggestion about deleting a page/article
Hi there,
Looking for some advice...this page: http://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=School_of_Creative_Arts&action=edit&redlink=1
is currently empty and links from this page: http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Bower_Ashton
Is it possible to delete this page as it isn't adding to the user experience or would you recommend filling it in (bearing in mind that it would need a name change in order to be current; from School of Creative Arts to Faculty of Arts, Creative Industries and Education).
Thank you in advance :)

I've been doing a bit of digging around locally to see if I could find anything more to help with these articles, but I've drawn a blank. English heritage lists
I'm having a look through Grade II* listed buildings in Taunton Deane, with the possible thought of getting it towards FL standard, and I was just wondering if you knew where the "Completed" date comes from. Looking through the references, the actual page cited for each building doesn't give special prominence to any date as far as I can tell, so I'm unsure on what it is based? Harrias talk 16:58, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
- Fair enough, some of the dates look a bit off on the Grade II* list, but perhaps they are listed for particular reasons not mentioned on their entries. My first aim is to start eliminating a lot of those red links, as well as getting photos for a lot more of them. I'll definitely lean heavily on the Grade I lists for the formatting. Depending on how the TD list goes, I'll certainly consider working on the others later, but with all that article creation, I'm a bit wary of how much work it could be! Maps
Hi, I couldn't help but noticing that in a lot of the building articles the Somerset maps really look a bit small to really illustrate locate. I was thinking of proposing 7 district maps with greater detail South Somerset, Taunton Deane (Borough), West Somerset, Sedgemoor, Mendip, Bath and North East Somerset (Unitary) and North Somerset (Unitary) maps for pin to display buildings on. If Peter I. Vardy would like something similar for Cheshire or Merseyside I will ask at the same time.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:58, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
Seems they already exist in the commons for Somerset and Lancashire but the Somerset ones have not been used yet!! I'll get along with creating the location maps for you.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:07, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
OK I've created Category:Somerset location map templates. If you could change all of the building articles to a district locator eventually I think this would be good.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:53, 24 February 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 March newsletter
That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader Freikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to a Featured Article on the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as Godot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge, Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.
In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions) took Bumblebee, a level-4 vital article, to Good Article;
- AHeneen (submissions) worked-up the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 article, also to Good Article status;
- Rodw (submissions) developed an extremely timely article to Good Article, taking Magna Carta there some 800 years after it was first sealed;
- And last but not least, Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points) worked up a number of Featured Pictures during round 1, including the 1948 one Deutsche Mark (pictured right), receiving the maximum bonus due to the number of Wikis that the related article appears in.
You may also wish to know that The Core Contest is running through the month of March. Head there for further details - they even have actual prizes!
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Portbury Dock - Airbus 380
Thanks for putting in references for this. Many of the more active Wikipedians have the bad habit of simply deleting anything they regard as unreferenced, poorly-formatted, etc. Which means that I don't spend a lot of time on my contributions; Because some bastard is quite likely to delete them.
Other things you could do:-
- Change the IGG Airbus transportation map to include Portbury.
- Change the Portbury popup prompt list to include Royal Portbury Dock.

Last year you kindly contributed to the above article's peer review or or FAC or both. An issue has arisen from yesterday's TFA appearance, and is under discussion on the article's talk. Briefly: an editor added into the text the cited information that Bondfield's was privately known as "Maggie", and then incorporated this into the lead so the subject appeared as Margaret Grace ("Maggie") Bondfield. I have removed the nickname from the lead, and stated my position on the talkpage. I would be pleased if you could visit and briefly comment there. Brianboulton (talk) 16:31, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
I see you've been busy expanding Cumberland Basin (Bristol).
Given the increasing recent interest locally in preserving this bridge, I was thinking that it was time we had a specific article on Brunel's swivel bridge, under that name. It has an importance to Brunel, and to moving bridges, greater than was realised until the last couple of years.
Note also that some of balloon flange girder is incorrect (and has probably propagated by now). The bridges over the basin locks have quite an age range between them and Brunel's involvement was only with the earlier batch. This is well documented now, but again it's only stuff that has emerged recently and only the bridge preservation people really have an accurate version. Re: Pic of Redcliffe Shot Tower
Thanks for your comment. I've responded on my talk page. -- chris_j_wood (talk) 19:01, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
I've found this engraving in commons (and on our article on St Mary Redcliffe). I've almost convinced myself that this shows the shot tower on its left edge. I think it is about the right location. It has a hoist(?) that doesn't appear on the later photo, and the windows of the lower building are all wrong. Of course that could be artistic license, or passage of time. I don't think I'm going to add it to the article because (a) I'm not sure enough and (b) I'm not convinced it is accurate enough, but it is intriguing. What do you think?. -- chris_j_wood (talk) 20:10, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

Education Extension
Hi Rod,
You need to ask for the appropriate userrignts, which is done here: Wikipedia:Education noticeboard. I generally keep an eye on the page and will support your nomination. Wikimedia UK is already one of the institutions found listed here, and so you could add your course under this.
I would just like to add that I am really pleased you are giving the extension a go, as I think it has great potential. However, having used it once, I have become conscious that it needs tweaks outside the conventional academic setting for which it is designed. I would very much like to hear about how you find using it and particularly what improvements you would like to see. In my view we might well need a variant designed for editathons and other scenarios which don't quite fit the academic model. Fabian Tompsett (WMUK) (talk) 09:00, 17 April 2015 (UTC)

No rest for the weary!
Hi Rod,
Remember the tune-up work we did on Chew Valley and Chew Valley Lake? We're slowly working forward through the oldest unreviewed FAs, and these next ones that you nominated are on the current working list:
- Mendip Hills
- Bath, Somerset
- Buildings and architecture of Bristol
- Exmoor
- River Parrett
- Somerset
- Sweet Track
Depending on how well you've been able to keep up with them over the years, they may need some work to ensure they're up-to-date, have adequate sourcing and proper image permissions, comply with MOS, the prose is in good shape, etc. There's no rush, and the order doesn't matter. I will help however you like; just ping me where you need me. Thanks again for your work updating the Chew articles! Maralia (talk) 16:15, 1 May 2015 (UTC)
WikiCup 2015 May newsletter
The second round one has all wrapped up, and round three has now begun! Congratulations to the 34 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our second round. Leading the way overall was Cas Liber (submissions) in Group B with a total of 777 points for a variety of contributions including Good Articles on Corona Borealis and Microscopium - both of which received the maximum bonus.
Special credit must be given to a number of high importance articles improved during the second round.
- Coemgenus (submissions) was one of several users who worked on improving Ulysses S. Grant. Remember, you do not need to work on an article on your own - as long as each person has completed significant work on the article during 2015, multiple competitors can claim the same article.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions) took Dragonfly to Good Article for a 3x bonus - and if that wasn't enough, they also took Damselfly there as well for a 2x bonus.
- LeftAire (submissions) worked up Alexander Hamilton to Good Article for the maximum bonus. Hamilton was one of the founding fathers of the United States and is a level 4 vital article.
The points varied across groups, with the lowest score required to gain automatic qualification was 68 in Group A - meanwhile the second place score in Group H was 404, which would have been high enough to win all but one of the other Groups! As well as the top two of each group automatically going through to the third round, a minimum score of 55 was required for a wildcard competitor to go through. We had a three-way tie at 55 points and all three have qualified for the next round, in the spirit of fairness. The third round ends on June 28, with the top two in each group progressing automatically while the remaining 16 highest scorers across all four groups go through as wildcards. Good luck to all competitors for the third round! Figureskatingfan (talk · contribs · email), Miyagawa (talk · contribs · email) and Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email) 16:41, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

University of Exeter workshop
Your U. of Exeter workshop looks useful and interesting, but one important item seems to be missing from the curriculum: WP:Notability, and the (rather high) barrier set by WP:Notability (academics). It may cause embarrassment if the participants are encouraged to make articles about all the members of their departments, only to see many of them deleted, possibly after a public discussion at AfD about the subject's academic record. I think WP:PROF should definitely be added to the participants' pre-reading list. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 07:54, 16 May 2015 (UTC)

Hi Rod, I've just been perusing the current GANs and took a look at this article. I am tempted to review it, but feel that I won't have enough time this week to commit to doing so. However, I think there are some fairly big issues there, which I thought should be brought up now. The history section reads more like a loosely formed family history of the people who have owned the estate; there are sections of it which aren't cited at all, and others which are referenced to things like "Per information notice attached to window, 2014", which I doubt are even acceptable as a source. I am all for genealogy and heraldry, but much of what is in the history section is outside the scope of the article by quite a margin; it lacks focus. Much of it isn't written in prose style, but in list form. And, amongst all of this, there are quite considerable gaps; for instance, we are told about Charles Staynings, but no where does it seem to be mentioned that he even owned the estate, let alone how and when he/his family owned it. The Martyn section is the same - who are these people and why are they relevant? Anyway, I can take a look and trim some back if you want, but I won't have time to research a proper history of the estate. Hopefully, I've been constructive here: I simply want the best for the article. Best wishes, —Noswall59 (talk) 13:46, 19 May 2015 (UTC).

A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.
What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.
This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.
If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!
- The simple solution is to simply include the "rawcontinue" parameter with your request to continue receiving the raw continuation data (example <https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages&rawcontinue=1>). No other code changes should be necessary.
- Or you could update your code to use the simplified continuation documented at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API:Query#Continuing_queries (example <https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages&continue=>), which is much easier for clients to implement correctly.
Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.
Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.
Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. Somerset cricket grounds
Thanks for your offer, I'll just give you a quick summary of those remaining without photos:
- Agricultural Showgrounds, Frome – Still in use.
- Rowdens Road Cricket Ground, Wells – As far as I can tell, this ground has been turned into football pitches now, so it might not be possible to take a photo relevant to this list, though it would still provide some context for the article itself I guess.
- West Hendford Cricket Ground, Yeovil – This ground no longer exists, the article has a fair use image, but I don't think that can really extend to this list?
- Johnson Park, Yeovil – Still in use.
- Imperial Athletic Ground, Bristol – This ground no longer exists, and as yet I haven't been able to find any older images. Given it appears to have been in use from 1951 to 2000, it is unlikely that there are any free images.
- Westlands Sports Ground, Yeovil – Still in use.
I'm hoping to be able to get over to Yeovil reasonably soon to get photos of Johnson Park and Westlands Sports Ground. Of the rest, only Frome seems likely to provide easy results, and if you're around that way, any picture you can get of the cricket ground would be brilliant. Harrias talk 16:48, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
- This is a non-free image of the ground at Frome. I don't know Frome at all, so no idea really about where it is in relation to anything else. Harrias talk 17:19, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
- You're right. One of them is captioned "A view of the Crazy Cage at the funfair on the cricket ground behind the Vine Tree public house." A quick look on Google for the Vine Tree pub, and for Frome CC confirms that it is the same ground. Given each picture is of individual rides, I'm not sure how relevant they are to the article, even as a showground/fairground? They have little real education value for the actual site. Bath, Somerset
Hello, Rod - I'm in the middle of reading and copy-editing Bath, Somerset. I have a question for you, and I may have others as I go through the article.
1) In the third paragraph in the section Bath, Somerset#Post-Roman and Medieval is the following sentence:
- It was papal policy for bishops to move to more urban seats, and he translated his own from Wells to Bath.
In the clause, "he translated his own from Wells to Bath", it is not clear to whom "he" refers. Is it the pope, or is it King William II? The next sentence starts, "He planned", and it's not clear who "he" is – King William II or John of Tours? Perhaps you could use a noun or a name instead of the pronouns.
2) The last sentence in that paragraph is:
- The 'hospital of the baths' was built beside the hot springs of the Cross Bath, for their health-giving properties and to provide shelter for the poor infirm.
I'm just wondering, is "the poor infirm" a standard phrase in British English? It is not one in American English. I know the article is written with British English, so British English should be used. I was just thinking that if "sick" or "ill" were substituted for "infirm", it would read, "the poor sick" or "the poor ill", and that would really not be colloquial. More colloquial would be "the sick poor [people]" or "the ill poor [people]". I'm just curious how that phrase developed. CorinneSD (talk) 01:22, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
It's late, so I'm going to stop now. I will resume copy-editing tomorrow. I've also had to ask for help creating a conversion template. See User talk:CorinneSD#Numbers as adjectives. CorinneSD (talk) 01:39, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
- Rod, I'm sorry I didn't get to this for a day or two. I will do some reading tonight and then continue tomorrow. By the way, I know you answered my questions above because I read your responses, but where are they? I've just started reading the section on Bath, Somerset#Government. I'll copy the first paragraph here for ease of discussion:
- Thanks for your ongoing work on this. My original responses were on your talk page at User talk:CorinneSD#Bath, Somerset copy-editing, but I will respond here is that is what you are expecting/easier for you.— Rod talk 20:09, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
- You're welcome. No, no. I wasn't expecting anything in particular. I knew I had read your reply but had forgotten where and was too tired last night to look. But, in general, I suppose it is better for replies to specific concerns or questions to be on the same page, but it doesn't matter which page. I'll now read your comments below. CorinneSD (talk) 20:25, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
- Historically part of the county of Somerset, Bath was made a county borough in 1889 independent of the newly created administrative Somerset County Council.[54] Bath became part of Avon when the non-metropolitan county was created in 1974. Since the abolition of Avon in 1996, Bath has been the centre of the unitary authority of Bath and North East Somerset (B&NES).[55] Bath remains in the ceremonial county of Somerset, although not within the administrative non-metropolitan county.
- I'm just wondering about the last sentence. For a non-Briton, these terms are somewhat foreign and meaningless. I know readers can click on links to read more, and, after reading the first paragraph in the article linked at "Historically", I understand the main point of the last sentence. But I'm wondering whether "the administrative non-metropolitan county" isn't unnecessarily long. Going back a bit, I assume in this clause, "Bath became part of Avon when the non-metropolitan county was created in 1974", the "non-metropolitan county" is the "newly created administrative Somerset County Council". If it isn't that, then it must be "Avon" (see, I'm lost already). If it is the "newly created administrative Somerset County Council", could you either add the adjective "non-metropolitan" before "administrative" or provide a brief explanatory phrase or clause so the reader will know? Once that is clear, then there is no need to repeat both "administrative" and "non-metropolitan" in the last sentence. Actually, it would be best to keep "administrative" and delete "non-metropolitan" because "administrative" forms the contrast to "ceremonial".
- Do you see what I mean? Clarify slightly for the non-British reader and make the last sentence more concise by eliminating a word. Just a suggestion.
- Its confusing for us Brits as well. Avon was designated as a non-metropolitan county when it was created in 1974. (Somerset has been a county (as Somersetshire) for hundreds of years). Avon was abolished in 1996 and Bath and North East Somerset was created. So since then it has been "administratively" part of BANES but ceremonially part of Somerset - I'm struggling to find a better form of words but does this explanation help?— Rod talk 20:09, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
- Hmm. Thank you for the explanation. Now I understand that it was Avon that was made a non-metropolitan county in 1974.
- How about this wording? I've tried to clarify it based on what you wrote, above, and join some sentences to make it a bit more concise:
- Historically part of the county of Somerset, Bath was made a county borough in 1889 independent of the newly created administrative Somerset County Council.[54] Bath became part of Avon when the non-metropolitan county of Avon was created in 1974. Since that county
the county of Avonwas abolished in 1996, Bath has been the centre of the unitary authority of Bath and North East Somerset (B&NES)[55] and remains in the ceremonial county of Somerset, although not within the administrative non-metropolitan county[Does this mean Avon? If it does, why do you have to add this? How could Bath be in a county that was abolished in 1996? If it doesn't mean Avon, what does it mean?].
- Thanks for the proposed wording which seems fine to me. The last bit mean that Bath is ceremonially within Somerset, however the ceremonial county contains five districts where many of the administrative functions are carried out by Somerset County Council and two unitary authority which carry out the administrative functions themselves.— Rod talk 21:46, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
- Wow. Quite complicated. However, I don't see how "not within the administrative non-metropolitan county" makes that clear. The last time you mentioned "non-metropolitan county" was in connection to Avon, which was abolished. If you think the "although" clause is needed, we need to find wording that expresses the situation without confusing the reader. CorinneSD (talk) 22:52, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
- I've added Somerset County Council to try to clarify.— Rod talk 07:58, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
- I'm sure it's better. I sounds better. But you might be interested in a difference between U.S. and Br. Eng. In the U.S., the word "council" is not used much, but when it is used, it always refers to a group of people, so to say that a city is part of a council doesn't make sense. But if, as it seems it does, it can mean an administrative jurisdiction, then it does make sense, and since the article is written in Br. Eng., of course it's fine.
- I've added Somerset County Council to try to clarify.— Rod talk 07:58, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
- Historically part of the county of Somerset, Bath was made a county borough in 1889 independent of the newly created administrative Somerset County Council.[54] Bath became part of Avon when the non-metropolitan county of Avon was created in 1974. Since that county
- 2) In the next paragraph, why did you put "the charter trustees of the City of Bath" in italics? It's not a foreign language term. It's not a title, and it's not a word that needs emphasis. CorinneSD (talk) 01:18, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
- charter trustees of the City of Bath is the title of an organisation - when Bath City Council was abolished (1974) some of the ceremonial functions were kept local, rather than being transferred to the larger Avon. The have been performed by the mayor and charter trustees - perhaps is should be capitalised rather than italicsed?— Rod talk 20:09, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
- I don't think the phrase needs to be capitalized and I don't think "charter trustees" needs to be capitalized. But I'm just a tad puzzled why you say just above that the ceremonial functions "have been performed by the mayor and charter trustees" but then leave out "the mayor" in your sentence? I see mayoralty before this, but not "performed by the mayor". Am I nitpicking?
- The charter trustees elect the mayor who carries out ceremonial functions, but doesn't have any administrative power.— Rod talk 21:46, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
- Italics removed.— Rod talk 07:58, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
- The charter trustees elect the mayor who carries out ceremonial functions, but doesn't have any administrative power.— Rod talk 21:46, 2 August 2015 (UTC)

I see mayoralty before this, but not "performed by the mayor". Am I nitpicking?
- 3) At the beginning of the third paragraph, there seems to be a big gap in time between the first sentence and the second sentence. The reader might wonder (a) what the point of the first sentence is, and (b) what happened in the intervening century and a half? CorinneSD (talk) 01:23, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
- Bath (UK Parliament constituency) has a go at explaining. Between 1832 & the modern constituency there was some fiddling with the boundaries & more people got the franchise - however it was a single constituency during that time electing two MPS from 1832-1918 and then one - the complexity of the changes my be too much in the (long) article on the city and best left at the constituency article but I could add a sentence or two if that would be helpful?— Rod talk 20:09, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
- Well, I think it would make the paragraph more cohesive (no large time gaps), but it could be somewhat general - a real summary sentence covering the intervening years.
- I've had a go adding two short sentences.— Rod talk 21:46, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
- Well, I think it would make the paragraph more cohesive (no large time gaps), but it could be somewhat general - a real summary sentence covering the intervening years.
- Good. I've got to ask you, though, about this sentence:
- There have also been some slight boundaries changes in the intervening years.
- I don't know if this is British English style or not, but normally when a noun is used as an adjective, it is used in the singular: "some slight boundary changes". I'll leave it up to you.
- You are right - changed.— Rod talk 07:36, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
- I don't know if this is British English style or not, but normally when a noun is used as an adjective, it is used in the singular: "some slight boundary changes". I'll leave it up to you.
- 4) In the third paragraph in Bath, Somerset#Geography,
Later in the third paragraph,I felt that saying a natural process is similar to a man-made process is backwards. The way I see it, the man-made process is similar to the natural process. So I re-worded that sentence and added a phrase (which I got from the linked article) to explain briefly what it is (for producing electricity), but you can leave that out if you wish. I also put it into parentheses for two reasons: it is a kind of aside to the main line of thought, and (b) it minimizes ambiguity in the subsequent sentence: it has to be clear that the next sentence "Hot water..." refers to the natural springs of Bath, not the artificial system. (I'm wondering whether you should leave out that sentence about the artificial system altogether. It really breaks the flow of sentences about Bath.- I presume we are now in Geography not Government? If so I've removed it.— Rod talk 20:09, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
- Good, but I hope you agree and didn't remove it just because I suggested it. ;)
- No I agree it was irrelevant to the point being made here.— Rod talk 21:46, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
- Good, but I hope you agree and didn't remove it just because I suggested it. ;)
- 5) In the first paragraph in the section on Bath, Somerset#Climate, you say, "South West England". However, just before it you have a "main article" template with "south-west England", just after it in the same paragraph you've got "south-west" several times, and you've got "south-east" and "south-eastern" early in the article. Shouldn't "South West" be hyphenated?
- I'm never sure on this and I know it has been debated at South West England, West Country etc which are about similar but poorly defined areas. I will be guided by you on the hyphenation but I think I went with that used at South West England rather than Climate of south-west England, however I agree it shows a lack of consistency both within this article and wp as a whole.— Rod talk 20:09, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
- Perhaps "South West England" is the way the governmental or historical region is spelled, but when speaking of a geographic region it is hyphenated. Perhaps it is traditional, and we should just leave it that way.
- I don't really feel qualified to debate the hyphenation of regions (or geographical indicators).— Rod talk 21:46, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
- Perhaps "South West England" is the way the governmental or historical region is spelled, but when speaking of a geographic region it is hyphenated. Perhaps it is traditional, and we should just leave it that way.
- 6) In the middle of that paragraph you have this sentence:
- In the summer the Azores high pressure affects the south-west of England...
- To someone already knowledgeable about weather or the climate around Bath, this will make complete sense. However, someone knowledgeable about neither may not realize that a high pressure situation creates fair (nice) weather. I'm wondering whether you could say how the Azores high pressure affects the south-west of England, maybe something like, "brings good weather to the south-west of England", or "brings generally fair weather to the south-west of England".
- I could however "good" and "fair" are both subjective terms - I might think it is good but others may prefer wet & windy.— Rod talk 20:09, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
- Oh... I see. However, I think there is a difference between "good" and "fair". I think climatologists might see "fair" as a definite type of weather: no or few clouds, no high winds, no rain or snow. If it is correct that a high pressure situation creates fair weather, then it might not be subjective. We could read the Weather or Climate article to learn more. Bath, Somerset, continued
I decided to start a new section because the previous one was getting long.
I've just started to read the section Bath, Somerset#Architecture. I'm going to copy the first paragraph here:
- There are many Roman archaeological sites throughout the central area of the city, but the baths themselves are about 6 metres (20 ft) below the present city street level. Around the hot springs, Roman foundations, pillar bases, and baths can still be seen, however all the stonework above the level of the baths is from more recent periods.
I'm just a little puzzled by a few things:
1) You say that "the baths themselves are about 6 metres...below the present city street level", and "all the stonework above the level of the baths is from more recent periods". That makes me wonder where in actuality are the "many Roman archaeological sites"? You don't say they are "about 6 metres below the present city street level", and you do say that "all stonework above the level of the baths is from more recent periods", so presumably not from the Roman period, so where – that is, at what level – are those Roman archaeological sites, and aren't "Roman foundations" and "pillar bases" parts of archaeological sites? Perhaps the second sentence should be first since "hot springs" seems to be a location (and less specific than baths?), but even if you do that, a bit of clarification would still be needed. If you agree, let me know if you need help formulating the sentences.
- All of the roman work is below current street level - both the baths and the foundations of the temple. over 2000 years they have been built on - see Roman Baths (Bath) for more - happy to go with the clarification you are suggesting.— Rod talk 21:46, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
2) In the first sentence, there is no need for "but". It is just an additional piece of information that does not contrast with the first clause. Will keep reading now. CorinneSD (talk) 21:12, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
- "But" removed.— Rod talk 21:46, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
Its getting late here and I need some sleep but will review any further comments tomorrow.— Rod talk 21:46, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
3) Let's work together to clarify the Roman foundations material - tomorrow.
- In the section Bath, Somerset#Bath in the arts, fourth paragraph, you have this sentence:
- Moyra Caldecott's novel The Waters of Sul is set in Roman Bath in 72 AD, and The Regency Detective, by David Lassman and Terence James, revolves around the exploits of Jack Swann during the early 1800s.
- For the second title, I don't see a connection to the city of Bath. Is "Regency" enough of a clue to that connection?
- Added "investigating deaths in the city" to explain relevance.— Rod talk 08:06, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
4) Toward the end of the first paragraph in Bath, Somerset#Parks is the following sentence:
- The replica of a Roman Temple was used at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley in 1924.
- First of all, why do you say "the replica" instead of "a replica". Was a replica of a Roman Temple mentioned earlier? Second, what's the connection to the city of Bath? I assume it was a replica of a Roman Temple from the city of Bath, but it doesn't say this. It could be a Roman Temple from Rome. Or do you think it's understood that the original Roman temple was in Bath? CorinneSD (talk) 22:45, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
- Changed to A & explained that it is in Victoria Park. I don't think there are any claims that it is particularly a temple in Bath, just a generic Roman Temple. There isn't enough evidence to say what the Bath one looked like.— Rod talk 08:06, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, Rod, but I don't know what you mean by "Changed to A" (just above). Anyway, here is the sentence as it is now:
- A replica of a Roman Temple in the park was used at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley in 1924.
- This sounds as if a replica that had been made of a (genuine) Roman Temple located in Victoria Park was used at the British Empire Exhibition in 1924. From what you wrote just above, I don't think this is what you meant. Is this what you meant to say? -
- A replica Roman Temple from Victoria Park was used at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley in 1924. CorinneSD (talk) 15:00, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
- That implies it was taken from the park to the exhibition at Wembley. My reading of the sources it that it was first built at Wembley in the 1920s and, once the exhibition was finished dismantled and rebuilt at Bath.— Rod talk 15:42, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
- Oh. Well, that I understand. I don't know if you have already revised the sentence; I haven't looked yet. How about this? -
- A replica Roman Temple was built at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley in 1924, and, following the exhibition, was dismantled and rebuilt in Victoria Park in Bath. CorinneSD (talk) 23:54, 5 August 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks - revised.— Rod talk 07:17, 6 August 2015 (UTC)
Mendip Hills
I've finished copyediting the article on Mendip Hills. It was generally quite well written. I have only two concerns:
1) In the lead, you mention the AONB (twice!) at the end of the first paragraph. Then you mention it again the second paragraph, written out in full and linked. I'm wondering whether you couldn't re-arrange some things to ensure that the designation is written out in full the first time it appears. For example, in the sentence in which you give the area (square kilometres), couldn't you use another phrase? Alternatively, you could move that information to the second paragraph. It would be good to avoid repeating AONB twice in close proximity. I'm puzzled by the last sentence in the first paragraph since there is no further mention of the "Somerset County Council's outdoor education centre" later in the article.
- I've merged and combined AONB references & removed the education centre.— Rod talk 07:19, 6 August 2015 (UTC)
2) In the section Mendip Hills#Walking, you have kilometres first, then miles, twice, and you have miles first, then kilometres, twice, in the conversion templates. It would be good if these were consistent. It's really your preference, but I'll also mention that you've got the square kilometres first, then square miles, that I mentioned above, in the lede. Exmoor
Hello, Rodw – I've just started reading the article on Exmoor. I think this sentence needs a little work:
- Even more precisely Exmoor is defined as the remnant of the royal forest of 18,810 acres allotted to the king in 1815, equating to 12/22nds of the total, in acres 10,262 1/4, which was sold to John Knight (1765–1850) in 1818, which comprises the present Exmoor Parish, whose parish church is situated in Simonsbath.
1) You've already used "more precisely" in the previous sentence. That one was all right because it contrasted with "loosely defined" in the first sentence. But since in reality these are all just different definitions rather than more or less accurate definitions, I recommend switching to "More narrowly defined," for this third definition.
2) In this part of the sentence, "the remnant of the royal forest of 18,810 acres allotted to the king in 1815", it's not clear whether it was the full 18,810 acres or a remnant of that area that was allotted to the king in 1815. If it was the full 18,810 acres that were allotted to the king in 1815, that information could be given in the previous sentence. Then you could avoid having to repeat "18,810 acres".
Also, it's not clear why only a remnant of the original huge area was allotted to the king; I didn't find a specific explanation of this later in the article; maybe it's there, but I didn't see it. If it is not explained in more detail later in the article, then there is no need for all this detail in the lede, which might deter a reader from continuing to read the article.
Finally, I think to much information is being packed into this one sentence. You've got four adjective clauses, which is really too many:
- [which were] allotted to the king in 1815, equating to 12/22nds of the total, in acres 10,262 1/4,
- which was sold to John Knight (1765–1850) in 1818,
- which comprises the present Exmoor Parish,
- whose parish church is situated in Simonsbath.
Do you want to work on it? Or, if you want to (a) clear up for me the things that I found confusing, and (b) tell me what is most important to keep or emphasize in the lede, I would of course be glad to attempt a re-wording. CorinneSD (talk) 16:27, 6 August 2015 (UTC)
- I've attempted to clarify and cot into sentences.— Rod talk 16:40, 6 August 2015 (UTC)
- It is much improved. Would you consider substituting "portion" for "remnant"? Mentioning "remnant" without explaining it begs the question of why it was a remnant even before it was allotted to the king in 1815. Also, I would say, "the portion of the royal forest that was allotted to the king in 1815", not "the portion of the royal forest allotted to the king in 1815". It makes it clear that it was a real event that took place in 1815. I wonder if the reason why the king was allotted only a portion of the royal forest will be explained later. Is it there? Did I just miss seeing it? Is there any way to insert a brief summary of the reason why the king was allotted only a portion of royal forest? For someone not familiar with English history, it makes one wonder why a king would be allotted only a portion of his own – ie., royal – land. CorinneSD (talk) 17:20, 6 August 2015 (UTC)
- I think that stuff has been added to the lead (without detail being added to the article) since its FAC. There is a bit of history here, here, here and in this book p79 but the books I have don't explain why it was divided up in particular ways enclosure. The Exmoor Historic Environment Record specifically contradicts what has been added to the lead, therefore I'm tempted to remove that section. I'm going to be away for the next 10 days or so and I'm not sure when I'm going to get internet access - so if you have not been able to resolve this I will look again for better sources.— Rod talk 18:11, 6 August 2015 (UTC)

- In the first paragraph of the section Exmoor#Places of Interest is the following sentence:
- Exmoor receives approximately 1.4 million visitor days per year.
- Could you tell me what this means? What are "visitor days"? What would be wrong with saying, "Exmoor receives approximately 1.4 million visitors per year"? CorinneSD (talk) 02:53, 8 August 2015 (UTC)
- I've tried to explain this. If someone visits for the day that is one visitor day if they stay for a week that is 7 visitor days.— Rod talk 21:14, 21 August 2015 (UTC)

- In the section Exmoor#Fauna, I moved "they are also one of the oldest breeds in the world" earlier in the paragraph. I also added a "citation needed" tag for that. I wonder if this clause is really necessary. If so, is it clear to you that "breeds" means "breeds of pony"? I'm not sure. CorinneSD (talk) 02:56, 8 August 2015 (UTC)

Simonsbath
Since I kept seeing "Simonsbath" in the Exmoor article, I decided to read it. Of course, as I read I made a few minor edits. There is some information in it about the partition of Exmoor that we were discussing. I wanted to ask you about a sentence in the section Simonsbath#Simonsbath sawmill:
- It is a very rare survival of an estate sawmill with surviving 19th-century machinery.
If possible, I'd like to find a way to avoid using both "survival" and "surviving" in the same sentence, perhaps changing one to another word. However, I don't know which one is more important to keep in the sentence. I thought of a few alternatives:
- It is a very rare example of an estate sawmill with surviving 19th-century machinery.
- It is a very rare survival of an estate sawmill with original 19th-century machinery.
- It is a very rare survival of an estate sawmill that still retains its 19th-century machinery.
- It is a very rare survival of a 19th-century estate sawmill with its original machinery.
Any thoughts? CorinneSD (talk) 01:24, 7 August 2015 (UTC)
- I think the fact that the original machinery is still in place is key therefore any of options 2,3, or 4 from your list seem OK to me.— Rod talk 21:16, 21 August 2015 (UTC)
- I chose the third version. I was surprised to see a website as a reference there. Is that all right? (I don't know much about references.) Corinne (talk) 00:02, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
River Parrett
I'm now reading River Parrett. I have some concerns about the section River Parrett#Hydrology and water quality. I'm going to copy the first paragraph here for ease of reference:
- Near the source at Chiselborough the typical level range is 0.05 metres (2.0 in) and 0.63 metres (2 ft 1 in) but has reached a maximum of 293 metres (961 ft).[21] The mean flow rate is 1.196 cubic metres per second (42.2 cu ft/s)[22] By the time it reaches Gaw Bridge the normal range is 0.23 metres (9.1 in) to 0.97 metres (3 ft 2 in) and a highest reading of 3.84 metres (12.6 ft).[23] At West Quay in Bridgwater where the river is tiday the highest astronomical tide level is 8.63 metres (28.3 ft) above ordnance datum (AOD).[24]
There are some things in this paragraph that are comprehensible only to a hydrologist or engineer. For example, in the first sentence it says, "the typical level range is X and Y metres". I have several questions:
1) What is a "level range"? Is that depth of the water in the river? Is that normal high and low in any given year? Could either different words be used to say what this is, or a brief explanatory phrase be added after "typical level range"?
- I've added depth to level range, but the environment agency does not say over how many years the data is averaged.— Rod talk 07:19, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
2) I understand the second sentence – the mean flow rate – but it's not clear to me whether "flow rate" is a completely different measurement from that mentioned in the first sentence or not.
- Added "level" to make this clear.— Rod talk 07:19, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
3) The third sentence says, "the normal range is X metres to Y metres". If this is discussing the same thing as the first sentence, then why does this say X...to Y while the first sentence says X...and Y?
- Changed.— Rod talk 07:19, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
4) The last sentence begins, "At West Quay in Bridgwater where the river is tiday..." I didn't know whether "tiday" should be "today" or whether it is a word having to do with tides with which I am not familiar.
- This seems to have been resolved.— Rod talk 07:19, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
Maybe Vsmith, who is a geologist, could help out here.
- I added the sections on hydrology and water quality to several local rivers following the advice of Jakec at Talk:River Tone/GA1 where this data was seen as being essential.— Rod talk 07:19, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
The second paragraph seems generally all right. I noticed, however, that in the first sentence discussing the ratings, the past tense is used:
- The area from the source to Broad River around Crewkerne received a moderate rating for ecological quality and good for chemical quality.
- Changed to receives.— Rod talk 07:19, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
- I saw these edits. What's wrong with "has"? I think "receives" and "achieves" sound odd, especially in present tense. Maybe "has received" if the report is fairly recent, but not "receives". If the report came out more than a year ago, maybe past tense would be better (for all the figures in this report). Corinne (talk) 00:06, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
- Changed to "has".— Rod talk 07:03, 24 August 2015 (UTC)

All the other sentences use present tense. If this is about one particular report, probably past tense should be used unless it is a very recent report, then present tense would be all right. Whichever tense is chosen, the tenses of the verbs should be consistent here. CorinneSD (talk) 18:27, 8 August 2015 (UTC)
In the section River Parrett#History is the following sentence:
- Whichever derivation is correct, the name Parrett and its spelling variations have been in use since the Anglo-Saxon era, as evidenced by the addition of -tun onto river names as seen in the local towns North Petherton and South Petherton.
I don't see how "the addition of -tun onto river names" supports the idea that "the name Parrett and its spelling variations have been in use since the Anglo-Saxon era". None of the suggested source words in this paragraph end in -tun. CorinneSD (talk) 19:17, 8 August 2015 (UTC)
- The names Pether, Pedrida etc are historically associated with the Parrett as set out in the following sentence.— Rod talk 07:19, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
- I still don't get it. I don't see the connection between "as evidenced by the addition of -tun onto river names" and "Parrett". Corinne (talk) 00:11, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
- Pether, Pedred and Pedrida are all old spellings for Parrett.— Rod talk 07:03, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
- I still don't get it. I don't see the connection between "as evidenced by the addition of -tun onto river names" and "Parrett". Corinne (talk) 00:11, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
In the section River Parrett#Port of Bridgwater, at the end of the fourth paragraph is a reference that shows in the article text. I don't think it should show, but I don't know how to fix it. CorinneSD (talk) 22:57, 8 August 2015 (UTC)
- Fixed.— Rod talk 07:19, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
- I saw your edit changing "receives" and "achieves" to "has". It still didn't sound right, so I worked on it a little more. I'd like to combine the second and third sentences into one since both sections achieved the same rating, but I see they have two separate reference numbers so I don't know how to deal with those. Do you merge them or choose one over the other? For that combined sentence, I'd like to use the same sentence pattern as seen in the next sentence:
- The area from Lopen Brook to the River Isle, around Martock and South Petherton, is rated good for chemical quality, poor for ecological quality and poor overall.
- So the new sentence (which would be the second sentence of the paragraph) would read:
- Both the area from the source to Broad River around Crewkerne and the area from Broad River to Lopen Brook are rated good for chemical quality and moderate for ecological quality.
- I would use this sentence, but you'll have to deal with the references because I don't know how. By the way, for all these sentences about the ratings, I would put the parameters (is that the right word?) in the same order. In this sentence I reversed "chemical" and "ecological" to be consistent with the order in the other sentences. Also, why use "ecological quality" in one sentence and "ecology" in the others? Corinne (talk) 17:49, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
- I've used your merged sentence re quality, the references can just go at the end of the sentence as they support the claims made. I've also changed ecology to ecological quality for consistency.— Rod talk 19:01, 24 August 2015 (UTC)

- Hi Rodw. (digging some stuff out of my memory here) Sand Point was used for testing halfsize(?) models of the bouncing bomb- there was some evidence of ramps (which might be the WW2 construction mentioned in the article)- it was referred to in the book about the use of the Old Pier by "boffins"- can't remember the title. The north shore going towards Woodspring was littered at one time with ordnance fragments- to the other side of the river Yeo there are the remains of two ships used as targets. In that area cannon and musket balls and shell casings have been recovered offshore. Back of Woodspring Priory is a station belonging to the Royal Navy, accessed by the road that goes to the priory. This (apparently) was one of two stations used to listen for Soviet submarines entering the channel. It's shown on the first edition Landranger 1:50,000 but was removed on the second edition. WikiCup 2015 September newsletter
The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.
In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far Casliber (submissions) in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was Coemgenus (submissions) at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.
The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:
- Cas Liber (submissions), who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
- Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points), second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions), first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.
- Harrias (submissions), second in Pool A, took fourth overall. He tends to focus on articles about cricket and military history, specifically the 1640s First English Civil War.
- West Virginian (submissions), from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
- Rodw (submissions), from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about Scheduled monuments in Somerset and a FT about English Heritage properties in Somerset.
- Rationalobserver (submissions), from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
- Calvin999 (submissions), also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRs—48.
The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.
Good luck to the finalists; the judges are sure that the competition will be fierce!

Arthur of Glastonbury
Hi!
You left a good comment here, I found very few soures in English about him.
Most probable thing is Arthur of Glastonbury is Jean Thorne (Arthur is his name in religion). He's blessed by the Catholic Church, not Saint. I don't know how to change the title of the article.
I don't think the Roman Church has a Saint Arthur. I only heard of 2 blessed: him and Arthur Bell (Francis as his name in religion). I also found reference to an Arthur of Ireland (12th century) in Spanish but didn't have time to check it.

Removing URLs from |work= param in {{cite}} templates
re [1]
Is this (in the grand scheme of things) a good or bad move? Maybe the |website= param is better, but I think that gives a similar error message anyway.
I can see why you're presumably doing it, to get rid of the red error message in the endnotes. I think though it's actually a useful feature to be able to use, and so a better fix would be to change the {{cite}} template itself to support this as a legit form. Thoughts? St Mark's School, Bath and Saint Gregory's Catholic College
Dear Rod,
Thank you for your talk message regarding my recent updates to the Wikipedia pages mentioned above. I'm afraid that I am new to Wikipedia so have struggled to understand all of the terminology and guidelines my apologies if I have mis-understood anything.
I have, as you noted, update the pages on behalf of the schools, but tried to keep it factual, rather than 'advertising' as I was aware that this is not permitted. I'm sorry if this does not appear to be the case. Could you perhaps direct me as to where exactly you feel the guidelines have been breached so that I may amend it - perhaps with your suggestions as to how this may be possible, if you were willing? Many thanks PaulaHawkins (talk) 09:05, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
Thank you Rod, I appreciate your advice. Much of the information that was there was incorrect, particularly in relation to the sixth form, headteachers and web addresses etc. but I take your comments regarding some of the wording. Can I re-write and send the article to you for verification and analysis before uploading? Is this something that you may be able to assist with? PaulaHawkins (talk) 10:19, 20 October 2015 (UTC)

Heritage at Risk references
Hi Rodw! When I saw your excellent lists of scheduled monuments in Somerset, I was inspired to start something similar for Lincolnshire. (I'm shamelessly stealing your list format!) If you peek in my sandbox, I've started with South Kesteven. One thing I'm having trouble with is references for Heritage at Risk assets. Certainly I can pull them up as search results from Historic England, but I can't find a way to link to a specific Heritage at Risk page for a particular asset. I've tried accessing similar references from your own lists, such as http://risk.english-heritage.org.uk/register.aspx?id=40919 for the Sweetworthy deserted Medieval settlement, I basically always get redirected to this page which has a message that says "The page you have requested has generated an error." Is this something you are seeing? If not I'm wondering if it's because I'm editing from outside the UK at the moment, I don't know. I know that Historic England recently revamped its website also. Kelly hi! 15:55, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
- PS you can reply here, I have your talkpage watchlisted. Kelly hi! 17:25, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, I can see the link you gave me...you can also search for the listing number which might be a better option for references. Kelly hi! 17:34, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Hi Rodw, do you think it worthwhile to create a template for the at risk register like the {{NHLE}} template so the you just pass in the number. Would keep all of the references in the same format and keep the URL in a single place. Keith D (talk) 19:47, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
- Possibly but rather than worrying about whether a template is used or a full cite web reference, I think this issue is maintaining them as they can change every year depending on whether the condition of the building/site improves or not.— Rod talk 20:02, 28 October 2015 (UTC)

Ref your note: Hi, A tag has been added to Template:Rosewell family tree asking for references and this then appears on pages where it appears eg William Rosewell saying that additional references are required. As you are obviously more familiar with the content than I am could you add some reliable sources?— Rod talk 08:54, 12 November 2015 (UTC)
The Template has a note: "Note: Only the male lines connecting those with Wikipedia articles are shown." Each article contains references to the source of the information on the relationships. The Family Tree is just there to clarify the relationships reported in the articles. I contend that the information in the Template IS referenced.

I don't think this [[2]] is a reliable source. Many thanks for anything you can provide--Ykraps (talk) 12:10, 14 November 2015 (UTC)
References in Templates
Rod
I have succeeded in breaking the template twice so have reverted to an old version. I'll keep trying but think it will be easier to add the references to the articles. After all the idea of the Tree is just to give a pictorial representation of what I have said of family relations in the text. Colinrosewell (talk) 05:34, 15 November 2015 (UTC)
Template: Rosewell
Now the Template has disappeared. I give up. Colinrosewell (talk) 06:03, 15 November 2015 (UTC)
Blanked Edit
Yes please but I was editing it in my Sandbox. How can deleting it, delete the template? How do I edit a copy of the template and then replace the original?

Editing Template in Sandbox
I see the comment from Andy. You have reverted the Template: Rosewell Family Tree in my Sandbox. If I change and/or break it there, it affects the Template in the articles. If I delete the template in the Sandbox, as I did last week, then I delete the Template. How do I remove the Template from the Sandbox so that I can recreate it in my Sandbox and add the references - one by one followed by testing as suggested by Andy - without affecting the Template: Rosewell Family Tree. I will move it from the Sandbox when fully tested.

Sandbox and Transclusion
Oh dear! I only need one sandbox. The one containing the John Coles draft was last used in 2012. I don't need it now.
If only I knew how I had transcluded the template then I might know how to undo it. Could you please untransclude the Template in my current sandbox.
Thanks for your help. Colin Colinrosewell (talk) 10:53, 16 November 2015 (UTC)
Transcluded Template in Sandbox
Thanks Rod. That gives me a good starting point for 1) a tidy up and 2) testing added references. Again, thanks for your help. Colin Colinrosewell (talk) 11:13, 16 November 2015 (UTC)
References for Rosewell family tree
After a week of work I have completed the addition of references to the Template: Rosewell family tree as used in article on William, Walter and Thomas Rosewell. Please let me know if I need any more references.

Exmoor grouse
Hi
I no longer edit Wikipedia, but the details you're looking for are as follows: the Red Grouse species account is on pages 65-66, and the Black Grouse account is on pages 67-68.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Helping with Cleanup tasks
Hi Rodw,
Thanks for your message. Unfortunately I can't help with the cleanup tasks as my project relates purely to documents kept at Bristol Record Office and extrapolating information/images from them onto Wikipedia. Sorry! Best wishes, BRO MarkS (talk) 12:38, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

e3 Media deletion page
Hi,
I've taken away the offending information on the E3 Media page and added secondary sources for my information. The page obviously hadn't been updated in a while. I hope everything is accordance with Wikipedia guidelines but I haven't edited a page before so please forgive any errors as naviety rather than manipulation.
Emily.

E3 Media
Ah I wasn't aware of the Conflict of Interest issues. Okay well, I'm the Marketing Manager at e3 so it obviously serves me well if the page stays up - however looked at the Conflict of Interest policy I don't think I've violated anything specific? I tried to fix the issues with the page, removing dead links, giving links to more accredited sources with more in-depth information. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emilywaddell (talk • contribs) 17:24, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2016 is just around the corner...
Hello everyone, and we would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2016 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. There are some changes we'd like to announce before the competition begins.
After two years of serving as WikiCup judge, User:Miyagawa has stepped down as judge. He deserves great thanks and recognition for his dedication and hard work, and for providing necessary transition for a new group of judges in last year's Cup. Joining Christine (User:Figureskatingfan) and Jason (User:Sturmvogel 66) is Andrew (User:Godot13), a very successful WikiCup competitor and expert in Featured Pictures; he won the two previous competitions. This is a strong judging team, and we anticipate lots of enjoyment and good work coming from our 2016 competitors.
We would also like to announce one change in how this year's WikiCup will be run. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Godot13 and Cwmhiraeth have chosen to limit their participation. See here for the announcement and a complete explanation of why. They and the judges feel that it will make for a more exciting, enjoyable, and productive competition.
The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. The judges are committed to not repeating the confusion that occurred last year and to ensuring that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.
If you have any questions or concerns, the judges can be reached on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, on their talk pages, or by email. We hope you will all join us in trying to make the 2015 WikiCup the most productive and enjoyable yet. You are receiving this message because you are listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
