Proposal at Reconquista (Mexico)

[edit]

I just proposed a new article on the actual movement, with the current page as a redirect or a sub-article. The issue has been indirectly adressed on the talk page but to my knowledge has never been considered specifically in regards to creating a new article. Thought you might want to weigh in on the topic, if you're not too busy. TheKaplan 20:33, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I wrote the article Dr. Jose Celso Barbosa Post Office Building Designation Act, the first bill in history that contains an article from Wikipedia. St. Basil's Cathedral?

[edit]

I noticed that you mention a "four-million dollar" St. Basils Cathedral in the article Católicos por La Raza. I wanted to say that St. Basil's church 1) did not cost four million dollars, and 2) is not and never was a cathedral. I am pointing this out to you because you were apparently the one who first wrote those words. They will be corrected in the article. I am concerned that portions of the article are worded to make the Church look as bad as possible and the actions of Ricardo Cruz look as noble as possible. In neither case is the reflected tone of the article have much to do with reality. InFairness 09:42, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was going with what my sources said. I apologize if my negligence in verifying the claims I reported offended you in any way. I assure you it was not intentional (WP:AGF). If you'll notice, I did not begin the article, but merely added to it. When I write or take credit for an article, I try to do as much doublechecking as possible. I regret that I don't do the same for all the contributions I make. You may also notice that CPLR is listed as an article in need of expansion under "tasks" at WikiProject Mexican-Americans. I listed it there because I realize that it was deficient. Unfortunately, I never got back to it. I thank you for your help in improving the article.--Rockero 21:21, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I was looking through the Mikhail Lebedev page and it seems to be vanity and non-notable to me. First of all, there is hardly any information about him on Google. Then, none of the publications seem to be news-worthy and notable. Finally, the scientist does not have many 1st author publications and seems to be non-important in his field. Raza

[edit]

Doing google simultaneously with the words, "Raza" and "Indígena" should answer your question. At the broadest sence, "raza" refers to those whose first language is Spanish. Therefore, in latin countries with more significant present of native minority, it is contrasted with "indigena", who speak non-Spanish indigenous language, wear non European indigenous clothes, and most importantly, do not identify themselves ethnically/culturally with Latin/Spanish. It appear that Chinano movement appropriated indigenous identity. It cause less embarassement doing so in U.S or in Mexico. Similar phenomeno can be seen in Scotland where majority of present Scottish population are Anglo Saxon, not Celt. Vapour

Dear Rockero,

First things first, I've returned to Wikipedia. Second, the GREAT news is that my picture of the Colegio mural was published in the Statesman Journal, the local Salem, Oregon newspaper. The article can be found here: Short-lived college offers lessons. Of course, I'm going to link provide a link to this article. Also, isn't there a tag on Wikipedia that is used to denote when articles or pictures have been cited in the media?

The CCIR is a marginally notable group, IMO, because they only seem to have one active member. At present that member is only notable for being its founder/chair/spokesperson which makes me doubt we'll every have a separate article on her. As for the CCIR article, please improve it any way you can. I couldn't find a mission statement on their website but something along those lines would be good if we can track one down. Re Citing References

[edit]

What works can be cited as references? I have looked at Wp's help pages and can't find an answer.

Let me clarify my question by way of example. In your Hector Garcia article you list two sources as references. Because I have read both of those books I know that you obtained all the information in your article from these two sources. There are a few other books out there which contain information about Dr. Garcia. They do not contain any new or different information than what was written in the sources you used, but they are more concise. For instance, in "Great Hispanic-Americans" published by PLI (2005), an entry of two pages is dedicated solely to Dr. Garcia. Can sources such as this one be added to the references section of the Garcia article even though they were not used in the initial research? Thanks - Chicaneo 23:15, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding deleted images

[edit]

Dear fellow Wikipedians,

I have deleted the following images:

They were all images I had uploaded from the archives. While I felt that they fell into the fair use category for one reason or another, I may have violated the gift agreements between the various donors and the archival institution where I am employed. For this reason, I have honored my boss's request to remove the images in order to avoid any possible legal or ethical issues. Hopefully, in time, I (or someone else) can make arrangements to restore them (or to replace them with even better images) in a way that respects the copyright holders' rights and the gift agreements between the donors and the archives. I apologize for the depreciation in quality of the articles in question and for the loss to the community, but I feel that this is the best course of action to take at this moment. Con respeto, --Rockero 03:15, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mexican-American WikiProject Listing

[edit]

The Mexican-American WikiProject is listed at WP:PROJDIR/H under the "Ethnic Groups" section. It links to two portals, the "Mexico" Portal and the "Culture" portal. I couln't find any links back to the Mex-Am project from either of these portals ... so I'm having difficultly understanding why the Mex-Am project is even linked to these portals. Am I missing something? - Chicaneo 18:52, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Whoever put that page together mistakenly listed the Portal:Mexico as our portal. We do not have our own portal yet, although we probably should. But portals require frequent updating, and as you know, I don't have the time to keep it up at the moment. Maybe next year. But if you want to get one started, I could probably give you a hand here and there. Many people do not realize the subtle difference between "Mexicans" and "Mexican-Americans"... yet another reason to continue our efforts!--Rockero 19:38, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And many people do not realize the tremendous difference between illegal aliens and Chicanos! There's a quite interesting dialogue going on in the illegal aliens talk page. More interesting is the constant vandalism and the subsequent reverts. And even more interesting is the "psycho" (his description of himself, not mine) historian who appears to run the show and who also appears to have taken personal ownership of the article. Although I must give him credit for vigilantly reverting the vandalism. Perhaps he means well but just goes about it in an odd way. Ay what drama! — Chicaneo 10:09, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding your edit to the project directory

[edit]

You will find that the Portal:Mexico is mentioned as being a portal related to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Mexican-Americans on the project page. You will also note that several of the portals listed as being associated with the various projects are not, in fact, under the direction of the project which lists them. The portals were put in as a way for the various people associated with either the projects or portals to know which of the other deal with their subject. Again, a portal does not have to be directly associated with a project to be listed on the project entry, particularly if the project does not have a portal directly related to it. I hope this clarifies the composition of the directory a little to you. Badbilltucker 19:41, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, thanks Bill.--Rockero 19:42, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's good to know bad boy Bill. Though it would be a nice touch if the WP:PROJDIR/H page provided a link to the Mexican-American Project rather than to two other projects. I'd fix it if I knew how. If you know how, do you think you could be a good boy and fix it for us? Pleeeease?? With dulce con leche on top? Chicaneo 20:18, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Adding Mexican-American WikiProject Userbox?

[edit]

Are there any rules for adding the WikiProject Mexican-Americans info box to an article? This one:

{{WikiProject Mexican-Americans}}

Would it be stepping on anyone's toes if I added one to an article that clearly falls within the scope and interests of the project, but has not been written or edited by any member of the group? (I noticed that WikiProject:Texas added their info box to your Tijerina article.) —Chicaneo 21:11, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No "rules" that I know of. I've been wanting to add that project tag to our articles, but haven't gotten around to it. I don't think anyone will mind, as many articles fall under the purview of several projects. Also, going to the template and clicking "What links here" is a handy way to quickly identify articles falling under the scope of the project, if and when they are appropriately tagged.--Rockero 21:21, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I'll see what I can do, mañana, about adding that project tag to the existing Mex-Am Project articles. —Chicaneo 21:52, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've tagged hundreds of articles written by members of projects other than the one I was tagging for. The only thing you want to make sure of is that the language of the banner is not exclusive. For the banner in question, if you changed the beginning of the text to "(this article) is within the scope of WikiProject..." the only real objection any other groups could reasonably have would be effective silenced. They might be able to object to the current wording, though. I think it might be a good idea to make the phrasing less "proprietary", as it were. Badbilltucker 22:54, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Guadalupe

[edit]

Hi -- glad to see you expanding the Codex and Poole stubs, and thanks for your encouragement. I'm sorry I fell off the face of the earth last year -- if your hobby is hard work, mine might be sudden evaporation.

If you have the time, and only if you have the time, I want to discuss Guadalupe's role in the United Farm Workers' movement, in the Cristero Wars, and as a "dueling virgin" w/Remedios. Remedios I can handle, but so far my searching for information about the UFW/Cristero wars has only yielded that she was a flag for the former and a motto for the latter. Can you tell me, is there more to it than that? I'm not asking you to turn up the sources for me, just to tell me what I should be searching for.

I was thinking about starting a daughter page called "Documentation disputes" because I think this stuff is interesting and ought to be expanded, but am afraid it will freak out more casual readers. Ideally I'd like this article to be comprehensible and intriguing for, say, a high school student -- and I'm worried that doubling, tripling, or even quadrupling the document discussion (which would be easy, eh) would lose my dream High School Reader.

Finally, ifeito tagged the article as biased: I think he's the ip address who said it reads like a devotional article again. He didn't expand on that though, just left the tag. I don't think it reads like a devotional article -- that's certainly not my interest in writing about Guadalupe, anyway. But I could be missing something. Do you have any comment about that? Katsam 20:32, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I totally agree about having a section on popular devotion. Unfortunately I don't know anything about it and -- so far -- have been unable to find out much. I took your advice and went for a cruise in the databases looking for Chicana art and I did find "la virgen de guadalupe defendiendo todos los xicanos" (the title was something like that anyway, with a picture of a karate virgin that I WISH I WISH I WISH we could use. Though obviously not. On the topic of images I photoshopped and uploaded some, although after I did it I realized there was still the ghost of that black line...grr...I'm going to improve these images later but for now they'll have to do. (I liked the darkened one because you can see what's going on, but I imagine the paler one is more true to life. Do you know?) Image:Virgen de guadalupe1.jpg Image:Virgen de guadalupe2.jpg Image:Virginmaguey2.jpg Anyway, I'll poke around looking for the Yolanda Lopez quote. I've already stuck my nose around looking for Cesar Chavez/Guadalupe interactions, it's a thankless task (boolean searching bringing up 398383930 unwanted responses) but I'll keep looking. Thanks for your input. Good luck with your finals (or whatever is keeping you busy). Don't let me distract you! Katsam 08:24, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The images are on the Our Lady of Guadalupe page right now. I got most of the black line off the photo of the tilma, and then drew a picture of a virgin in a maguey (although it's kind of crude and I think I'll rework it over the holidays).

Someone just added a link to a site full of Guadalupe-related pictures from Los Angeles, including some personal altars and stuff like you were talking about. It's a pretty cool link. I wonder if the photographer would let us license one of her photos -- I especially like this one of the Virgin on a taco truck.

There was some mention of the promesas, and also of people traveling to Tepeyac on their knees, in the article before -- I chopped the whole section out in a fit of frustration, but I think that stuff should be re-added with citations. I'm citation-crazed right now. If you know stuff about that and can add it during the holidays that would be great -- I'd love to know more about it. I can't find much in the library about it...

I like the idea of a Guadalupe-related category. "Guadalupan writers" doesn't really work though because it doesn't contain Guillermo Schulenburg, Yolanda Lopez, or Antonio Valeriano (depending on who you talk to)...I mean, I guess it could, but we'd be stretching. I'm not very familiar with the category system. "People related to the history of the Virgin of Guadalupe" seems accurate but about fifty times too long.

Well, I'm being chased by a four-hundred-pound essay so I'd better flee, see you later, cuidase, Katsam 15:46, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm having a point of view dispute with IFeito/Schiacchi. I've never had one before so I don't know how to do it gracefully. I know about good faith and no personal attacks and three-revert rule, but I don't understand what psychological position to take in order to best enjoy this aspect of the communal writing project... Hispanic Supremacy

[edit]

Dear Sir-

Thanks for your concern about the Hispanic supremacy page. However, my adding of quotations for the word "supremacist" does not violate Wikipedia's NPOV policy. Those quotes listed are most definitely supremacist, and saying so is not being opinionated. For example, take a look at the white supremacy page; please note that the word "supremacist" in the phrase "Alleged or stated white supremacist websites" is not in quotation marks.

However, with all due respect, I will not revert the edit on the Hispanic supremacy page until this issue is resolved. --MosheA 22:14, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Agustín Víctor Casasola

[edit]

I agree that the article was very unbalanced and negative before they edited the article today, but they deleted all the criticism, and added a huge amount of unreferenced information that is almost 180 degrees in the other direction. They even deleted plain factual information about the formation of the school.

The truth is probably somewhere inbetween, but I have no idea where. For now, all I'm going to do is add an {{unreferenced}} tag to the article, because I don't have the time to do anything else. TIA BlankVerse 14:17, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have some articles on the subject, and it mostly looks like it needs to be cleaned up and de-POV'ed, but I can't get to it right now. Maybe we should re-tag it with {{POV}} instead?--Rockero 02:35, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey bro, sorry to interrupt, but you're pretty well spoken and well-regarded around here. I thought you might have something useful to add here [2]. Murcielago 22:03, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Long time. Send me an e-mail, I want to tell you something. Tony the Marine 07:19, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I am asking you, Will and Chicaneo to take a look at the aforementioned section on the talk page and offer your opinions. I think there is nothing violating NPOV in my additions. Basically, it is a recitation of the facts as stipulated to by Ms. Arellano in the legal brief filed on behalf of her son. If I'm wrong, fine, but if not, I think the tag needs to come off the article. I also would like to request that you call for a vote on the categories. I would myself but if I am involved in that at all, I am sure Evrik will not even participate in it. Thanks--LordPathogen 22:05, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, nevermind. Evrik has just done as he wants (again) and unilaterally reverted the article back to May 9th. And no one who has the power lifts a finger to stop him. --LordPathogen 13:36, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rockero. I'm just copying this response over here in case you missed it on my talk page.

Hi Rockero, it's nice to hear from you again. The last I heard you expected to be busy in school and not available for much Wikipedia work. I look forward to your upcoming contributions. I also noticed Chief Moses was on your to-do list (but after I wrote the article — I'm not actually poaching on your list). We seem to have a significant overlap in our interests. --Rbraunwa 13:51, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

William Byron Rumford

[edit]

Hi Rockero, just saw your post on my page, and having cecked the piece in question,I must admit I don't quite understand where you are coming from? If you had looked clearly, you would have seen that I didn't simply copy and paste from another source

William Byron Rumford, called Byron by his many friends and colleagues, was born in 1908. A UC Berkeley graduate, with a degree in pharmacology, Rumford was the first African American to be elected to any public office in Northern California.
"Rumford took the leap in 1948 from the pharmacy he owned on Sacramento Street in Berkeley to Sacramento itself, where he was best known for authoring two state legislative landmarks: the Fair Employment Practices Act of 1959; and the Fair Housing Act of 1963"[1]

During 1948 to 1966 when Rumford served in the Legislature, his Berkeley pharmacy became an informal headquarters for other emerging politicians, such as future mayor Lionel Wilson and California Supreme Court Justice Allen Broussard.

In 1966 Rumford ran for state Senate, losing in an extremely close race. This was the first occasion votes were counted using computers. Errors in the new system may have cost him the election.

After spending 18 years in the Assembly, Rumford ran for state Senate in 1966, but lost in an extremely close race where votes counts were computerized for the first time. Glitches in the new system allegedly cost him the election, say the files.

In 1980, the Grove-Shafter Freeway (from the Caldecott Tunnel to MacArthur Freeway) was renamed in Rumford's honor. In 1997 the Rumford Postal Station was dedicated to him, part of the Ronald V. Dellums Federal Building.

In 1980, a section of Highway 24, formerly known as the Grove Shafter freeway (from the Caldecott Tunnel to MacArthur Boulevard) was renamed in Rumford's honor. Motorists emerging from the tunnel on to the Byron Rumford stretch are treated to a truly breathtaking view of Oakland, Berkeley and the Bay, perhaps one of the most scenic views in the California state highway system.
Rumford received further recognition for his years in public service when the postal station in the downtown Oakland federal building complex (opened in 1993) was dedicated as the Rumford Postal Station in 1997. The busy station is located on the northeastern quadrangle of the complex, next to Clay and 14th streets. The entire complex is known as the Ronald V. Dellums Federal Building, and is distinctive for its contrasting limestone and granite facade, two 18-floor towers linked by an impressive light-filled atrium lobby, and a set back, outdoor plaza facing neighboring City Center. KMD Architects were responsible for the award-winning design of the complex.
"Rumford was to politics what Jackie Robinson was to baseball."

Another text quote.

So, you can see the text has been re-written not simply cut and pasted.
