Wikimedians for Sustainable Development - December 2023 Newsletter
Dear Wikimedians for Sustainable Development,
As we bid farewell to 2023, we reflect on a year that has been an uneven year for our user group. While the journey has been marked by some truly inspiring events, most of our efforts have been largely uncoordinated and the user group hasn't been the support it could have been. Yet, there's a glimmer of hope and a world of potential for 2024.
Highlights of 2023:
- Newsletters Galore
- We kicked off the year with zeal, sharing updates and inspiration through four newsletters. The number of things happening in the movement is astounding, but we need to rethink the format of the newsletter going into the next year.
- Growing Strong
- The Wikimedians for Sustainable Development family welcomed 33 new members in 2023. Your passion and dedication continue to inspire us, and we look forward to nurturing this community spirit in the year ahead.
- Wikimania Talks
- Our voices echoed far and wide at Wikimania, where several members of our community took the virtual stage to share insights and ideas about everything from Wikipedians-in-Residence's to open data. Your contributions showcased our commitment to sustainable development on a global scale.
- Content Creation Magic
- Throughout the year, our extended community demonstrated incredible dedication to expanding the knowledge base on Wikipedia. Countless hours were spent creating and curating content that aligns with our mission, contributing to a more sustainable digital ecosystem.
- Campaigning hard
- We saw a large variety of campaigns, from writing challenges to editathons. The willingness to experiment with new formats and partners, as well as learning from past efforts, shows great promise for the future.
Acknowledging Challenges:
While we celebrate these achievements, we acknowledge that 2023 presented its fair share of challenges. A lack of global coordination reminded us that the road to sustainable development is not always linear. However, it is precisely these challenges that fuel our determination to work together more cohesively in the coming year and proof that the user group is needed.
Hopeful Anticipation for 2024:
As we turn the page to 2024, let's carry forward the lessons learned and the successes celebrated. We are optimistic that, with renewed energy and a collective commitment, we will overcome obstacles and create an even more impactful and connected Wikimedians for Sustainable Development community.
Here's to a year of collaboration, growth, and making a lasting impact on the world through our shared passion for sustainability. Together, we can turn challenges into opportunities and pave the way for a brighter future.
Wishing you all a joyous holiday season and a Happy New Year!
Warm regards, User:Ainali, User:Daniel Mietchen
PS. We have started writing our yearly report, please add your activities to it.

The Renaissance Community abuse issue
Greetings, as you are the one monitoring the Renaissance Community page, I thought that I, as the author of that page should contact you. The Renaissance Community came to an end in 1988 when its founder, Michael Metelica was asked to leave. By then, of the original 300 full-time members, only about six remained. The rest had left because of Metelica's increasingly erratic and uncontrollable behavior due to drug and alcohol abuse, In 2006, allegations of sexual abuse of young women concerning him and select UNNAMED other men were brought forth, not by the victims but by second parties. Since then, there has been no solid stand-up-in-court evidence that these crimes happened. Metelica died in 2003. While the sexual abuse caused by "Spiritual" leaders is sadly, nothing new, evidence is still needed to support these claims, evidence that this author has begged his community for and welcomes. "Mikalson" has mixed fact and fiction in her accusations and since there are no names given or actual evidence given, it falls into the realm of hearsay. If she DOES name men without factual evidence on a public site, she (and Wikipedia) run the risk of legal charges of libel and defamation of character. So this is a murky situation and because I respect Wikipedia's commitment to truth, I need some advice on how this issue of hearsay and lack of legal evidence should proceed. I have repeatedly begged members of our community on our private Facebook page to deal with this abuse issue to no avail. My goal here on Wikipedia is to protect those many innocent members of this community who have been unfairly targeted by "Mikalson" and to correct damaging misconceptions of the Renaissance Community in general. Thank you for your time. Dbrown1793 (talk) 14:50, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Dbrown1793: Note that there is this criteria for revision deletion. This includes
Grossly insulting, degrading, or offensive material that has little to no encyclopedic or project value, or violates our biographies of living people policy. This includes slurs, smears, and grossly offensive material of little or no encyclopedic value, but not mere factual statements, and not "ordinary" incivility, personal attacks or conduct accusations.
- I do wish to note that your behavior has not been without reproach. You have posted what are copyright violations into the article, & you have disruptively edited the talk page by repeatedly blanking it, removing material in violation of WP:TALKO, & by removing the talk page headers. I rarely threaten anyone by indicating that they can be blocked, but I will note that when I refer someone to an administrators' noticeboard, I usually do so after an editor has spooled out enough rope to hang one's self, proverbially speaking. I would not hesitate to do so in your case. I would advise that you to read & heed English Wikipedia's policies & guidelines so you can continue to make useful contributions instead of getting blocked. Margaret Sanger - Assume Good Faith
Please remember to assume good faith when dealing with other editors. Thank you. DocZach (talk) 07:40, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
- I think that my edit summaries & my comments on talk pages (see Special:Contributions/Peaceray) demonstrate that I do assume good faith, & that any warnings I make are solidly based on policies & guidelines.
- If anyone reading this is wondering what prompted this editor to post this notice on my talk page, I would direct them to the discussion at Talk:Margaret Sanger#Eugenics should be mentioned in the very beginning of the article's lead; neutrality dispute. & specifically my comment here. Invitation to join New pages patrol
Hello Peaceray!
- The New Pages Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles needing review. We could use a few extra hands to help.
- We think that someone with your activity and experience is very likely to meet the guidelines for granting.
- Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time, but it requires a strong understanding of Wikipedia’s CSD policy and notability guidelines.
- Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision, and feel free to post on the project talk page with questions.
- If patrolling new pages is something you'd be willing to help out with, please consider applying here.
Thank you for your consideration. We hope to see you around!

Translate from another Wikipedia pages (es and fr)
Hi, I would like to contribute this time by translating (making some modifications and adjustments) the Wikipedia page (actually in Spanish and French) of Spanish born author, photographer and former journalist Ruth Baza, who is also on the news worldwide for a couple of months, due to a dramatic event she lived in the act of service as one of the youngest and more respected former correspondent, aged 23, ill but strong and determined, in 1995, with a celebrity in Paris after interviewing this man for one of the most important film mags of Spain, Cinemania. According to WOMEN PRESS FREEDOM and The Coalition of Women in Journalism: "Ruth Baza has bravely come forward with her allegations against Gérard Depardieu. Her courage in speaking out about a rape that allegedly occurred nearly 30 years ago is not only commendable but also essential in the ongoing fight against sexual violence and the culture of silence in the media and entertainment industries. We believe that Ruth Baza's decision to file a criminal complaint, despite the significant passage of time and the legal hurdles, is an important step towards achieving justice, not just for herself but for all survivors of sexual assault who have felt powerless against influential figures. By coming forward, Baza has reignited critical conversations about sexism within the film industry, particularly in France, where recent reports have shed light on deeply ingrained misogynistic attitudes." This is an important step and a stormn in France and the Film Industry. Her career is very interesting as she belongs to the Generation X as author of a book that marked a generation, several stories, her unique way of writing ancd making interviews to personalities worldwide, and also her work as a photographer (mostly rock and grunge icons), who exhibited last year in Chicago with the best female music photographers of the world courtesy of Courtney Love, and more. I will probably need help.... Or if any of you, editors want to translate it or make your own version based on the existing pages and the hundreds references, I will be pleased to help as I have done and do when I have time to improve pages as an amateur editor, on people of interest who has worked hard to achieve great things, a Cultural legacy that can´t be lost, History. Thank you in advance for your time and help. Sylvie Siminovich (talk) 23:54, 26 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Sylvie Siminovich: A lot to respond to here.
- First, I listed it at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_writers/Missing_articles#Spain.
- Good places to solicit help for this article:
- If you had 500 edits, you would be an extended confirmed user, & have the ability to use content translation tool, for which I wrote this guide. If you get a more experienced editor to help you, then s/he could use the translation tool.
- I wish I could devote the time to help you with this, but I am currently preparing for this event, plus a trip abroad, a camp the month after, & other activities. I can stop by some of the time to do some WP:Wikignome activities, which is what I generally do with my articles on my watch list. Peaceray (talk) 02:44, 27 February 2024 (UTC)

Obsolete tags in the above message
I don't know if you wrote the above message or just delivered it, but it contains two sets of obsolete center tags that were delivered to over 500 User talk pages. Unfortunately, nothing is currently preventing this mass error distribution from happening. I have, ever hopeful, submitted T358818 as a feature request. If you could use modern syntax in future messages, that would be helpful. If you save a draft message, you can check "Page information" for any Linter errors. I'm happy to help fix any errors in draft messages that you or your colleagues are creating. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:56, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Jonesey95: I had tried to figure out some of those obsolete tags before sending those out. I believe I was having some problems with centering some images & eventually gave up in the interest of expdediency ("don't let perfection be the enemy of the good"), because after working a couple of hours on that message, I needed to move on to an immediate non-wikipedia tasks. I would have spent more time with it had I been able. Next time I will save a copy in my sandbox & will check ""Page information" for any Linter errors. Peaceray (talk) 00:04, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- The non-obsolete ways of centering do not always work as well as the old center tags, unfortunately. It would be great if there were a foolproof drop-in replacement every time, but there is not. Feel free to ping me for help any time. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:58, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- OK, thank you for your help!

Hi! Recently on User talk:84.144.76.192, you gave a level four warning template ten times. I'd like to remind you that placing additional warning templates won't help; report the user to WP:AIV instead. Thanks! Rusty4321 talk contribs 14:53, 12 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, @Rusty4321: In my experience, reporting a disruptive editor to AIV is only effective after they have continued that behavior once they received a final warning. In the case of my multiple warnings, this had not yet occurred. I have known administrators to decline blocking a disruptive editor on this basis.
- Further observations:
- If a disruptive editor starts disruptive editing again, this provides a quick glance for administrators to see the problem.
- I wanted to demonstrate to this editor that I have gone thought most of their edits. In this editor's case there were some acceptable edits.
- In a minority of cases, my tactic has been effective. In this case, the editor paused for three days. I have seen cases where an editor has stopped vandalizing altogether, which I believe is a preferable outcome to blocking.
- I realize other editors may disagree with me & may designate this as spamming warning templates. I acknowledge that disagreement, but I fail to see any harm in my practice. Peaceray (talk) 16:19, 12 May 2024 (UTC)

Help needed...
Hello @Peaceray,
I was looking around for conference call for program submission templates/forms and I came across what you have for the Wiki North America Conference 2024 - it is really simple and straightforward.
I know it's short notice but was wondering if you or anyone on your team could help us (or show how to) create/design the same for the WikiIndaba 2024 conference? There are only a few different parameters though - please let me know if this is feasible...and thanks in advance
AKibombo (talk) 13:29, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @AKibombo: I have essentially just played around the edges with this. I do know that you need a few pages in various namespaces to set it up. @SuperHamster, Enterprisey, and Econterms: all have more experience than I do & can probably explain how it all works together.
- I know you need the following:
- A template: wikiconference:Template:WCNA 2024 Session Submission
- A module: wikiconference:Module:WCNA 2024 Session Categories
- A launch page, in this case from the wikiconference:2024/Program/Submissions
- On the latter, I know that this code is important:
{| class="wikitable" style="margin:auto; margin-top:2em;"
! <translate><!--T:16--> Submit a session proposal</translate>
|-
| style="padding:0 2em" | {{#forminput:form=WCNA 2024 Session Submission|size=50|super_page=Submissions:2024|placeholder=<translate><!--T:12--> Your session title here</translate>|button text=<translate><!--T:13--> Create a new submission</translate>}}<center><small class="plainlinks">Note: You must log in or [https://wikiconference.org/index.php?title=Special:UserLogin&returnto=2024%2FProgram%2FSubmissions&type=signup create an account] on this wiki first.</small></center>
|}
- If you are only using one language, you do not need to use the translate tags,
<translate><!--T:16-->
&!</translate>
. @SuperHamster, Enterprisey, and Econterms: do you have any other imput? Peaceray (talk) 15:57, 2 June 2024 (UTC)- Before all that is the need for Extension:Page Forms. If WikiIndaba has their own wiki it's simple enough to install, but this extension is not available on Wikimedia wikis. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 16:07, 2 June 2024 (UTC)

Edit in "The Line" article
Hello, you reverted an edit in "The Line" article
This reference is cited at the beginning of the article and indicates the original population that "The Line" was designed for is 9 million: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jul/27/saudis-unveil-eye-popping-plan-for-mirrored-skyscraper-eco-city
The reference that you cite for 1.5 million is used towards the end, but the information is inconsistent with what the article states at the beginning. One of the references is wrong, or may cite expected population for different points in time. 216.179.80.106 (talk) 20:57, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
- Nevertheless, the statement
The Line is now expected to be reduced to a short section at the western end 2.4 kilometres (1.5 mi) long, a 98.6% reduction from the original design, with a population of 300,000 rather than the intended 1.5 million.
uses the Telegraph citation & thus should reflect what is in that citation. Mixing & matching between citations does not work unless they are consistent.
- It could well be that the intended population figures were revised downward more than once. If this was the case, both sources could be correct for their date of publication.
- You can always use ==Notes==, {{efn}}, & {{notelist}} to add an explanatory footnote to note the discrepancy. Peaceray (talk) 21:08, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
No incorrect information
The Farm was a hippie commune, so it's Counterculture of the 1960's, NOT the 1970's as it is punk. 2806:2A0:B08:8473:F295:6737:C5AB:B79C (talk) 05:52, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
- As I have stated before, The Farm was founded in 1971. The counterculture of the 1970s was more than just punk. Peaceray (talk) 07:38, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
Industrial Rock page
Industrial Rock keeps being reverted by user known as Binksternet, the whole page was condensed to make more sense and better aligned yet he keeps reverting it back to the unsourced and duplicitous old version. Please see this page and see what you can keep and source. Thank you. Genesisp-orridge (talk) 11:18, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Genesisp-orridge: I generally respect editors like Binksternet who have 5.6 times the edits that I have.[a] I will note that Binksternet has reverted edits by you and 79.79.80.252 with an edit summary stating that you are sock puppets of Aradicus77. At this point, you seem to be a single-purpose account.
- None of you have have opened a discussion on Talk:Industrial rock. As the WP:BRD suggests, I would recommend starting there. Canvassing of editors like me & CAVincent without doing that is an ineffective strategy. Peaceray (talk) 14:51, 22 June 2024 (UTC)

Debrief: Blocking of apparent sockpuppet Pocahontas1596
Re the escalation all the way to level-4 on Pocahontas1596 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log): If there had been a note in the warning about apparent sockpuppetry, I'd have gone ahead and blocked on the third offence. I didn't immediately see it at the article's page history, either. In retrospect, yes, escalating was a good idea. —C.Fred (talk) 19:11, 14 July 2024 (UTC)
- OK, next time I will include a note about suspected sockpuppetry. Thanks!
Can this work as a Source?
Hey user:Peaceray can you help me answer a question please?
I would just like to know , I'm about to create a new article about someone but can't seem to find a source about the topic real name. The only reference I find is from news media publication name IOL entertainment but it only mentions the person in the article it's fully his article saying what his real name and surname is including what his stage name is.
so my question is would this work as a source just for real name and surname? LuvkyStar (talk) 14:00, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
- @LuvkyStar: Who is the artist & his stage name? Would you also give the citation from IOL Entertainment? Peaceray (talk) 15:48, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Peaceray: my bad.. I actually wasn't looking right I found an extensive amount of articles I'll link them for you. I was confused as to what the surname actually was and if Don Vino is his real surname or if this is a stage name. but after clicking the news tab on Google I discovered alot more articles and read through at least 4 articles which are all about him I discovered that Prins is his surname actually. I never heard the surname Prins before only Prince yes. so that was the whole confusion to me..
- I can't remember the older IOL article I was talking about as it was while back about a show and whole lot of performers where it only mentioned him as Don Vino if I can remember correctly... I'm a daily reader of IOL Entertainment and every newspaper division owned by Independent Media as its the part of the most reliable information of news out here.
- so I'll probably be getting most of my notable topics from these publications. Also his article would be considered a Musician article but I don't think he has any music awards? I'm still searching though, but how do I go about formatting that type of article without an award nomination or something? any examples perhaps?
- Would these two articles work as Citations? especially for real name and career purposes?
- @LuvkyStar: Those look okay to me. Peaceray (talk) 19:34, 20 July 2024 (UTC)

Talk:Basal metabolic rate
I see you are modifying structure and format of various topics in edits today. I am setting up an archive for old topics, and am ready to begin a mass transfer of outdated topics into the archive. Let me know here when you are done. Zefr (talk) 18:43, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Zefr: Hi, I was thinking about the archiving when I had finished, but I will let you take the lead on that. I will let you know when I am finished. This talk page was a real mess – I am trying to finish the signing, dating, & indenting before I put it in chronological order. Peaceray (talk) 18:49, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Zefr: Done I am all done reconstructing the talk page! Peaceray (talk) 19:34, 24 September 2024 (UTC)

- I have restored the picture to the article & asked the editor who removed it to discuss it on the talk page. I removed the template while this is being discussed. Peaceray (talk) 21:13, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
Follow-up WCNA 24
Hi Peaceray! I'm Balaenicactus, unfortunately I missed your workshop on Using Wikipedia films and film makers red links to seed Wikidata, yet would like a lot to stay in touch for future projects. Part of my work in the Spanish Wikipedia is creating, editing and maintaining pages regarding film, filmmakers and their creators, so I'd love to talk and see how we could collaborate on this. Have a wonderful day! Balaenicactus (talk) 23:53, 6 October 2024 (UTC)
Wikidata default label
Hi. Thank you for bringing up the default label feature in Wikidata during your WCNA 24 presentation, as I had been unaware of it. However, you mentioned that only basic Latin characters should be used, and no diacritics. This doesn't seem to match the help document, which says "Use the name in native language and native script as the default value." It seems like consensus on this may have changed recently per a talk page discussion. Is the character limitation still listed anywhere? Nick Number (talk) 17:36, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Nick Number: I am sorry, I must have got it wrong! I am not sure where I arrived at that faulty conclusion, but I must thank you for pointing me to the help document. Peaceray (talk) 19:45, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
- Ok, no worries. I suspect I will be making a lot of use of this feature going forward. Nick Number (talk) 19:50, 8 October 2024 (UTC)

Administrator Elections: Candidate instructions
Thank you for choosing to run in the October 2024 administrator elections. This bulletin contains some important information about the next stages of the election process.
As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:
- October 15–21: SecurePoll setup phase
- October 22–24: Discussion phase
- October 25–31: SecurePoll voting phase
- November 1–?: Scrutineering phase
We are currently in the SecurePoll setup phase. Your candidate subpage will remain closed to questions and discussion. However, this is an excellent opportunity for you to recruit nominators (if you want them) and have them place their nomination statements, and a good time for you to answer the standard three questions, if you have not done so already. We recommend you spend the SecurePoll setup phase from October 15–21 getting your candidate page polished and ready for the next phase.
The discussion phase will take place from October 22–24. Your candidate subpage will open to the public and they will be permitted to discuss you and ask you formal questions, in the same style as a request for adminship (RfA). Please make sure you are around on those dates to answer the formal questions in a timely manner.
On October 25, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close again to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. Anyone can see who has voted, but not who they voted for. You are permitted and encouraged to vote in the election, including voting for yourself. Please note that the vote tallies cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see your tally during the election. The suffrage requirements are different from those at RfA.
Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last for an indeterminate amount of time, perhaps a week or two. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, you must have received at least 70% support, calculated as support ÷ (support + oppose). As this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("'crat chats").
Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation as a candidate, and best of luck.

DON'T BITE
I'm all for that, but look at these contributions, which also prove that they were not new. Drmies (talk) 18:56, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Drmies: I took a look at a number of Special:Contributions/Prince Deckow Sr.'s warnings. From the several that I examined, the reversions were all unwarranted & all the warnings that Prince Deckow Sr. issue were {{uw-vandalism4im}}. My objective is to repair the harm that Prince Deckow Sr. has done, even if I welcome a few vandals in my haste to rectify any harm done to many innocent IP editors.
- My first edit on a red link IP talk page is always one of the Welcome-unregistered templates. If I have reverted an IP edit & one of the non-constructive welcome templates does not apply, I will use {{welcome-anon}} & then add the appropriate warning.
- In this case I believe that speed is probably better than accuracy. The vast majority of IP editors make good edits while the rest either make bad edits out of ignorance, are outright vandals, or a pushing a POV. I rather make a mistake welcoming the latter than to leave AGF IP editors with a final warning on their page.
- If they are making bad edits, I have faith that we editors doing edit patrol will catch up with them. Peaceray (talk) 19:15, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
- Peaceray, it is totally possible that that user was warning inappropriately--did you report them? Drmies (talk) 19:17, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
- Others reported that editor & Prince Deckow Sr. has been blocked. The editor may have also been a sock puppet. Peaceray (talk) 19:20, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
