Interview Request
Hi Miyagawa. I work with the Learning and Evaluation team at WMF. I would like to talk to you about your experiences planning and running on-wiki writing/editing contests. Specifically, I am interested in learning more about your experiences working on the WikiCup. My goal is to learn more about the strategies that program leaders are using to plan and conduct successful writing and editing contests. We will create a toolkit to share this knowledge with program leaders across the movement. Please send me an email at kharoldwikimedia.org if you are interested in setting up a time to speak, or if you have any questions or concerns. I hope to hear from you soon! A new reference tool
Hello Books & Bytes subscribers. There is a new Visual Editor reference feature in development called Citoid. It is designed to "auto-fill" references using a URL or DOI. We would really appreciate you testing whether TWL partners' references work in Citoid. Sharing your results will help the developers fix bugs and improve the system. Boat Race reviews
The Running Man Barnstar | ||
Hey Miyagawa, just a quick barnstar to say thanks for the many reviews of Boat Race articles you've conducted over the past year. As of this morning, I completed my (initial) goal of ensuing that every Boat Race had, not only its own article, but one that was either of GA or FA status: we now have 158 GAs and 3 FAs that we can all be proud of! It doesn't stop here, for me at least, I'm going to keep up with improving the quality of the GAs and look for more FA opportunities. Plus, there's the small matter of 70 Women's Boat Race articles to get up and running! But thanks again, I couldn't have done it without your help. deOrphaning script
Hello everyone! I was just working on responding to a couple bug reports for a script that I worked up as part of a request from this project, and I noticed that only a couple people (who weren't even on this mailing list) are actually using the script. A little history on the script: In March of 2014, Jim Cartar came to my user talk page and said he needed some help in acquiring a script for a backlog drive that he was working on that could keep track of and score deOrphanings for a scored backlog drive. I took that request to the project's talk page (BackLog Drive "DO" (De-Orphaning) script proposal) and there was near unanimous support for this. I thought about the proposal and decided the best way to do it was to build a new script (which is still no where near as comprehensive as Manishearth's OrphanTabs) and build into it a mechanism that will make BLD scoring easy.
What I'm wondering at this point is, since there appears to be only two people using the script, should I continue to develop this script with a goal of using it for scoring BLDs or just debug the existing script and leave it at that. Thanks for any replies or comments.

WikiCup 2015 May newsletter
The second round one has all wrapped up, and round three has now begun! Congratulations to the 34 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our second round. Leading the way overall was Cas Liber (submissions) in Group B with a total of 777 points for a variety of contributions including Good Articles on Corona Borealis and Microscopium - both of which received the maximum bonus.
Special credit must be given to a number of high importance articles improved during the second round.
- Coemgenus (submissions) was one of several users who worked on improving Ulysses S. Grant. Remember, you do not need to work on an article on your own - as long as each person has completed significant work on the article during 2015, multiple competitors can claim the same article.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions) took Dragonfly to Good Article for a 3x bonus - and if that wasn't enough, they also took Damselfly there as well for a 2x bonus.
- LeftAire (submissions) worked up Alexander Hamilton to Good Article for the maximum bonus. Hamilton was one of the founding fathers of the United States and is a level 4 vital article.
The points varied across groups, with the lowest score required to gain automatic qualification was 68 in Group A - meanwhile the second place score in Group H was 404, which would have been high enough to win all but one of the other Groups! As well as the top two of each group automatically going through to the third round, a minimum score of 55 was required for a wildcard competitor to go through. We had a three-way tie at 55 points and all three have qualified for the next round, in the spirit of fairness. The third round ends on June 28, with the top two in each group progressing automatically while the remaining 16 highest scorers across all four groups go through as wildcards. Good luck to all competitors for the third round! Figureskatingfan (talk · contribs · email), Miyagawa (talk · contribs · email) and Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email) 16:38, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the understanding...-The Herald • the joy of the LORDmy strength 19:46, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
- The problem with that one is that the citation changes might look large in bytes but don't really count as anything but copyediting or tweaks. So having removed those from the equation, this means you added the text "a yearly award given by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for those who conferred the most outstanding contributions for mankind in the field of physics", "Nobel laureates are selected by the Nobel Committee for Physics, a Nobel Committee that consists of five members elected by The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. In the first stage, several thousand people are asked to nominate candidates. These names are scrutinized and discussed by experts who", "The names of the nominees are never publicly announced, and neither are they told that they have been considered for the prize. Nomination records are sealed for fifty years." That's it = those four and a half sentences. Miyagawa (talk) 20:12, 12 May 2015 (UTC)

I'm Confused
Hello:
I have been doing an extensive copy edit of your Gene Roddenberry article. I need to draw this to your attention. The following paragraph is confusing - perhaps you could rewrite it so that it makes sense?
"In 1972 and 1973, Roddenberry made a comeback to science fiction, selling ideas for four new series to a variety of networks.[134] Roddenberry's Genesis II was set in a post-apocalyptic Earth. He had hoped to recreate the success of Star Trek without "doing another space-hopping show". He created a 45-page writing guide, and proposed several story ideas based on the pretence that the scenario would have caused pockets of civilisation to regress to past eras or change altogether.[136] The pilot aired as a TV movie in March 1973, setting new records for the Thursday Night Movie of the Week. Roddenberry was asked to produce four more scripts for episodes but, before production began again, CBS aired Planet of the Apes. The ratings were poor, and Genesis II was scrapped and replaced by a Apes television series.[137]"
The way this reads to me is that Genesis II was a ratings success, setting records. Then Planet of the Apes Was shown and the ratings were poor. So Genesis II was cancelled and POTA was made into a series. See my problem? Thanks. Twofingered Typist (talk) 12:24, 22 May 2015 (UTC)
- You're quite right - the line "the ratings were poor" can't be right, so I'm not sure what I was thinking. I'll double check the source when I get home tonight and correct it. BTW, massive thanks for copyediting this article. Miyagawa (talk) 12:33, 22 May 2015 (UTC)
- You're welcome.Twofingered Typist (talk) 21:16, 22 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Twofingered Typist: I've fixed it now - the ratings weren't poor, they were even higher than Genesis II'. Miyagawa (talk) 17:08, 22 May 2015 (UTC)

Further Roddenberry Questions
Hello again: In the section of your article on Roddenberry – Star Trek Revival - you originally wrote the opening paragraph as follows:
"Due to lack of funds, Roddenberry was unable to buy the full rights to Star Trek for $150,000 in the early 1970s, leading Lou Scheimer to approach the company in 1973 about creating an animated Star Trek series.[1]"
As this was unclear to me, I rewrote it as:
"Due to lack of funds, Roddenberry was unable to buy the full rights to Star Trek for $150,000 in the early 1970s. Lou Scheimer approached the company in 1973 about creating an animated Star Trek series."
As I was working on my final pass of the copy edit I realized there’s still a disconnect between these two sentences as I've written them. Could you check and clarify:
Who was GR trying to buy the rights to Star Trek from? Is the fact he couldn’t buy the rights the reason for Scheimer approaching the company (which company, by the way) to produce an animated series?

2015 GA Cup
Greetings, all! We would like to announce the start of the 2nd GA Cup, a competition that seeks to encourage the reviewing of Good article nominations! Our inaugural competition, which ran from October 2014 to April 2015, was such a resounding success that we'd like to do it again. Currently, there are over 500 GANs ready to be reviewed; competitors in the previous GA Cup reviewed about 570 GAs, so we can again make a huge impact in helping editors improve articles in Wikipedia and decrease the traditionally long queue at GAN. The 2nd GA Cup will begin on July 1, 2015. As last time, five rounds are currently scheduled (which will bring the competition to a close on November 28, 2015), but this may change based on participant numbers. The judges learned a lot during the 1st GA Cup which exposed weaknesses in its system. Using both the feedback from last year's participants and the weaknesses discovered, we've revised the scoring system to make it more fair. The sign-up and submissions process will remain the same. We also are introducing three new judges: 3family6, Jaguar and MrWooHoo. So in total, there will be six judges. We hope this will allow the competition to run more smoothly. Sign-ups for the upcoming competition are currently open and will close on July 15, 2015. Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors, so sign-up now! If you have any questions, take a look at the FAQ page and/or contact one of the judges. Cheers from 3family6, Dom497, Figureskatingfan, Jaguar and MrWooHoo, and TheQ Editor. |

2012 Summer Olympics medal table FL promotion
Hi there,
I am planning to improve the medal table of 2012 Summer Olympics for featured list consideration next February. I want to start making changes right now because I may have a heavier college workload come fall. I need help where to start (I did a few edits last year).
- --Birdienest81 (talk) 04:45, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
- @Birdienest81: I've just taken a look and the article is already in pretty good shape. The table seems to be correctly formatted, and the existing material is all cited. If you have further information to add to it, then by all means but I think it's not far off an FL already. Miyagawa (talk) 20:55, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

2015 GA Cup
Welcome to the GA Cup! In less than 72 hours, the competition will begin! Before you all start reviewing nominations and reassessments we want to make sure you understand the following:
Also, rather than creating a long list on what to remember, make sure you have read the "Scoring", "Submissions", and "FAQ" pages. Now some of you are probably wondering how on earth the rounds will work. The rounds will work in a similar fashion as the previous competition, with the exception of the first round. Round 1 will have everyone compete in one big pool. Depending on the final number of participants after sign-ups close, a to-be-determined number of participants will move on (highest scorers will move on) to Round 2. We guarantee that the top 15 will move on (this number may change), so make sure you aim for those top positions! Moving on to Round 2, participants will be split into pools. The pools will be determined by a computer program that places participants by random. More details regarding Round 2 will be sent out at the end of Round 1. It is important to note that the GA Cup will run on UTC time, so make sure you know what time that is for where you live! On that note, the GA Cup will start on July 1 at 0:00:01 UTC; Round 1 will end on July 29 at 23:59:59 UTC; Round 2 will commence on August 1 at 0:00:01 UTC. All reviews must be started after or on the start time of the round. If you qualify for Round 2 but do not complete a review before the end of Round 1, the review can be carried over to Round 2; however that review will not count for Round 1. Prior to the start of the the second round, participants who qualify to move on will be notified. Finally, if you know anyone else that might be interesting in participating, let them know! Sign-ups close on July 15 so there is still plenty of time to join in on the action! If you have any further questions, contact one of the judges or leave a message here. After sign-ups close, check the Pools page as we will post the exact number of participants that will move on to the next round. Because this number will be determined past the halfway mark of Round 1, we encourage you to aim to be in the top 15 as the top 15 at the end of the round are guaranteed to move on. Cheers from 3family6, Dom497, Figureskatingfan, Jaguar and MrWooHoo. To subscribe or unsubscribe to future GA Cup newsletter, please add or remove your name to our mailing list. If you are a participant, you will be on the mailing list no matter what as this is the easiest way to communicate between all participants.

Hi Miyagawa-
I deleted the bonus point notation for my first FP submission because the bot somehow misread it as a claim for FPO points. If my deletion does not correct the scoreboard, could you please manually delete the FPO points posted. Thanks.--Godot13 (talk) 04:31, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

Good topics for GA Cup
Hi, I see you removed some of the articles which made up the Good Topic English Heritage properties in Somerset from scoring points. This is different from my interpretation of the rules which say:
- Points are awarded per article in the topic that was worked on by you. If you would have a right to claim points for the promotion of the article to good or featured status, you have the right to claim points for its promotion as part of the topic, even if you did not nominate the topic.
- This applies even if the work on these articles was not done this year, as long as you have done significant work on at least one article in the topic this year.
Perhaps I'm reading it wrong?— Rod talk 07:08, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
- Would it be worth putting this discussion on the wikicup talk page, so that others would be aware of our different interpretations of the rules for scoring on this? Perhaps the wording could be tightened (for next years competition)?— Rod talk 07:36, 12 July 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for bring that to my attention - I'd missed the third bullet, so I'll go restore those articles now to your submissions page and the bot will pick it up on the next pass. Miyagawa (talk) 07:42, 12 July 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks. I think this will apply to Wikipedia:Featured topic candidates/Scheduled monuments in Somerset/archive1 and a future GT nomination on National Trust properties in the county I'm hoping to nominate before long, so wanted to ensure my reading was right.— Rod talk 07:47, 12 July 2015 (UTC)
