You don't need to specify the individual editor. Linking to a list of all contributors is considered as adequate attribution. The list is available in the article history. Therefore an edit summary that says where it was copied from and to see that page's history is considered adequate attribution. If somebody wants to know who the count of Cerdanya was in any given year, they should be able to find that in the county of Cerdanya article. And in a simple list. Please be aware that under the requirements of HTML5, the old markup bgcolor=xxx should be replaced with style="background:xxx"; in this markup the quotation marks and the pound sign (#) before hexadecimal colors are not optional. Also, the old markup align=xxx should be replaced with style="text-align:xxx"; in this markup the quotes are not optional. Also, when both alignment and color are listed, they have to be merged into one style, e.g. style="text-align:center; background:red" This happened only once in this particular article, but you may have removed that item. Hi @Kornatice:! Thank you for you question. Have you tried to access his Commons page I've created as well? There you'll see at the side the wikis which have information on him. You may need to translate (as I did). From there you can also go to his Wikidata page/element, that I give you here as well. You can also search for him in the Medieval Lands site, which has citations for documentation. Adalbert the Devout is an elder son of Leopold III, which died a year after his father (in 1137), and that's why I think he might have been overlooked in traditional lists. I saw that some sources say that he has been excluded from succession but they don't present justifications for that. What if such exclusion was invented by later sources to justify the traditional succession from Leopold III to Leopold IV? I don't know as well. If he is confirmed as margrave, he would be one of the shortest reigns in Austria. If you have any more questions please let me know! Have a nice weekend! Hi, @Ohnoitsjamie: @Drmies:! I would like to know the reasons why my edits are disruptive. In the Hohenlohe page, my point is to add a list of the rulers of the place. Is it because it needs more sources? The table is too confusing? There are too many colours? I wouldn't want to trash out my work, but I would want to repurpose it. All of the above. Foremost, Wikipedia requires reliable sources for all material; nothing in that table seems to be supported by any citations. Additionally, our manual of style, specifically sections on MOS:COLOR, dictate that color should not be "the only method used to communicate important information." It's not clear at all what purpose the wide variety of colors in that table serve. Wikipedia is not free webhosting for geneaology. Wikipedia is not free webhosting for genealogy pursuits. There are plenty of other places on the Internet for building your own geneaology pages, but Wikipedia is not one of them. OhNoitsJamie ^Talk 20:18, 19 November 2024 (UTC)

a) I understand that I insert few sources, and I'll try to correct that. However, I do not know a lot of sources, and I recognise that. I also hope that, as a collaborative site as Wikipedia is, other fellow Wikipedians will fill holes on other sources I don't have access.

b) As I already told to @Drmies:, the tables I insert are not genealogies. Are you saying that because of the fact that I insert "Son of x and y"? That's just a way to establish the relationship of the ruler with a previous one (Note that List of English monarchs have the exact same info on the monarchs in its tables I have on mine). It's widely known that estate management is familial. In Germany the estates were usually divided by various sons, situation that created different branches. That's what the colours are for; to distinguish branches. In my (humble) opinion, it's also interesting, for example, to see who are the mother and wife of the ruler, to have an immediate idea to which other neighbouring lands was the ruler connected to, by blood and marriage. That's probably why you see the table as a genealogy but note that usually a genealogy present all the children of a couple, and that's not what happens here: the tables present only the children that actually had some fraction of the land, because the focus in on the land (s) ruled by a family. The idea of the table is to present the rulers, ordered chronologically by date of accession, in succession on the different parts of the land. In the first table I usually present an idea of how the estates were partitioned and how they evolved in time; the second one is for the rulers of each of these parts.

c) I do not use just colour to differentiate; note that some minor divisions of the territory don't have a different colour; I insert the specific part under the column Ruling part. For example, in the Hohenlohe case, Wernsberg and Schelkingen were minor divisions under the Uffenheim part of Hohenlohe, and they had not different colours in the table.

d) In the Malaspina case, I recognise that this method backfired, because the number of rulers is very high, but let's not compare it with the Hohenlohe family, who are certainly more simple and, I believe, better sourced; I was thinking that in the Malaspina page, the table could be broken in smaller family lines, given the abnormally high number of branches. Maybe this could help to a better understanding of the different branches?

Given all of this, would you think that the lack of citations is actually my main problem? Beside adding sources, what advice can you give me on what to add/take from "my" tables? Would you advise, for example, relying more on the info in the "Ruling part" and less on colour, I mean, use one colour to a broader group of branches, to use less colours?

I don't know if you just want to get rid of these tables, but please understand my point of view: even if it is not conveniently sourced, the tables I made took a lot of effort, and seeing them in the pages is, for me as it would be for any other editor, proof that my work is valid and valuable for the community. So, I would like to improve the tables, and make them worthy of the pages they are in.

I can't speak for User:Ohnoitsjamie, obviously, though I agree with their earlier comments. This kind of information needs rigorous sourcing, but even then the question is whether there is encyclopedic relevance here, or whether we're listing nobles just because they were nobles. As I said earlier, you can say these are tables and not genealogies, but a genealogy listing only the direct heirs or whatever is still a genealogy. Some of these people may be notable in their own right, but many are not. Listing names is one thing, but these huge (and they are huge) colored tables are, IMO, just completely undue. And in the one article there were the logos, with or without blossoms, and then you go on to say that wives and mothers are important too and should be included, and we need notes on the land holdings and whatnot, and before you know it there's 265,170 bytes of material, much of which is in there twice, since after the removal there are still dozens and dozens and dozens of names, many of which redlinked, and many of them also listed in various genealogies and other sectioned-off lists of names. And with COLOR I'm also pointing at the many colors that are not likely to be visible to those with vision impairments, besides the problems that OhnoitsJamie noted, and that's before we try to figure out how this words on a mobile device.

I think you may have to live with the fact that this level of detail (presented in this way) just isn't what we do here, and I'm actually tempted to also prune all the genealogical material (and lists) that follow the Dante paragraph, since so much of that material is also unverified and of questionable relevance. • If the concept of genealogy is, as you say "a list of direct heirs of whatever", I will assume that you consider any list of rulers (kings of Sweden, tsars of Russia), as a genealogy, which I honestly disagree.
• Your problems that you continue to list seem to stem from my edits at Malaspina family (excessive use of color, use of the coat of arms in the table, excessively long tables). I recognise that I was already advised to not use such strong colours, which I'm trying to improve in later years (in Malaspina family I couldn't, sorry, and you were in the right, there). I think you'll agree that in the Hohenlohe table the colours weren't that strong, right? It's because I'm making an effort to lighten the colours of tables, to, as you say, improve visibility.
• I understand that we don't agree in how I present the information in "my" tables, but I don't understand how the Hohenlohe table is related to the Malaspina one; they are two different tables. The Hohenlohe didn't have all of those problems you listed. If you ask me, it was a considerably shorter table, with fewer names, with not so many colours. If you consider that the main problem in the Hohenlohe page is, then, the lack of sources, I come to ask you to restore the table there and I'll see which sources I can insert in the table. If not, please explain the problem with the Hohenlohe table.
• Also, I've noticed you deleted the table in Hohenlohe, but didn't present any alternative solution to present a list of the rulers there. If you don't agree with the restoration of the Hohenlohe table, nor think the sources are enough to make this table better, I would suggest we work together to find a solution that pleases both of us. You already know what and how I think, but I'm open to your suggestions: how can we preserve the maximum quantity of information, without losing quality, in your point of view?
