Editing content

Hello,

I have tried a couple of times to edit a page on Wikipedia and received a few messages from a user called Cordless Larry re referencing. I followed the guidance he provided, added in several citations and then tried to post again, but have now received a warning message from yourself. I am not sure what I am doing wrong?

VictorBailey25 (talk) 11:29, 4 October 2019 (UTC)

@VictorBailey25: as Cordless Larry previously explained to you there are a number of issues with your edits to that particular article, with regards to referencing and tone. With pertinence to referencing, the reference you have provided is the subject's book -- Wikipedia does not consider that a reliable source for the subject; Wikipedia's preference is independent secondary sources (eg. books by other authors, news publications, and so forth). Furthermore, writing large slabs of content and then listing general sources at the end of the article is unacceptable; on Wikipedia, we use inline citations per each claim made, pursuant to our policy on verifiability.
As Cordless Larry also mentioned, tone is another issue. On Wikipedia content must be written in a neutral point of view; your writing appears to be somewhat promotional of the subject. Please feel free to message me if you have further queries, —MelbourneStartalk 11:58, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

ArbCom 2019 election voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add NoACEMM to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:13, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Freelance Wikipedia Content Creation

Hello

Hello, MelbourneStar. You have new messages at MelbourneStar's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the Talkback or Tb template.

,

We need some assistance writing and developing a Wikipedia page for a new development in Melbourne and would like to know if you'd be interested in helping with this. It's major mixed-use development in Melbourne and because of your experience writing for Australia 108, we think you would be very well positioned for this.

You can also reach me by email at tom@nosetotail.com.au.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you,

Tom— Preceding unsigned comment added by TomCusackNTT (talkcontribs)

Hi @TomCusackNTT: thank you for your message. I'm currently only reachable through this talk page on Wikipedia, so I will respond to you here if that's alright (and notify you on your Wikipedia talk page). I am more than happy to help out in the creation of an article on a new development in Melbourne - a lot of my edits and article creation revolve around Melbourne developments. With that said, I am strictly a volunteer on Wikipedia (as opposed to accepting any form of paid editing), and if I or anyone were to help in creating such article, we would have to observe all of Wikipedia's norms and policies, such as Wikipedia:No original research, Wikipedia:Verifiability and Wikipedia:Neutral point of view. Not observing any of those would be the difference between a new article remaining on the project, and such article being deleted.
If you would still like my help, please identify the development. I'll do my research on it and get back to you on where to go from there. Kind regards, —MelbourneStartalk 02:09, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi @MelbourneStar:,
Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I totally understand and respect your position on that, and thank you for your help. The development is West End, a major mixed-use development in West Melbourne. The development will be nearing completion and as such we would like to instate a legacy page on Wikipedia for the long term education and understanding of the project.
I will be able to supply material that will educate you on the background, the key information, development team, construction process etc. Anything you think you will need to develop an appropriate Wikipedia page.
Let me know if I can be of any more assistance.
Thank you,

Hi @MelbourneStar:,
Happy New Year! Is there anything I can do to assist with the creation of this page? Provide you with brochures or information on the development team? I have also agreed with my team that we will make a donation to Wikipedia in-lieu of payment. Let me know if there is anything you need at all.
Thank you,

List of YouTubers

Hey,

Regarding my edit on List of YouTubers, my computer filter automatically replaces swear words on my screen with hashtags. I wouldn't have changed it manually because of WP:Uncensored. It means I can't edit any article with profanity or it changes it. I didn't notice the profanity here due to the size of the article.

When I made my edit, I also added an individual to the list. When you reverted my edit, it removed them too. I can't re-add now or I will remove the profanity again. Would you be able to add (copy and paste) Kyle Forgeard, Jesse Sebastiani, Steve Deleonardis to the article by K? They are Canadian, their channel is called Nelk and the genre is Comedy, vlogs, pranks. Thanks and sorry for the inconvenience

Just saw message on my talk sounds good :) --HillelFrei• talk • 13:08, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
@Hillelfrei: no worries, I thought it was strange that they were replaced with hashtags, but your explanation makes sense :) All good! —MelbourneStartalk 13:13, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
I thought I had fixed my filter but it didn't work. I just added someone and it did it again. Can you re add the person and replace the profanity? Sorry! --HillelFrei• talk • 04:11, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
@Hillelfrei: all good! I've fixed it for you. Regards, —MelbourneStartalk 04:19, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
