Administrators' newsletter – January 2022

News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following consensus at the 2021 RfA review, the autopatrolled user right has been removed from the administrators user group; admins can grant themselves the autopatrolled permission if they wish to remain autopatrolled.

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • The functionaries email list (functionaries-en@lists.wikimedia.org) will no longer accept incoming emails apart from those sent by list members and WMF staff. Private concerns, apart from those requiring oversight, should be directly sent to the Arbitration Committee.

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

ANI LTA harassment

Hey, Wizzito here. Sadly, this LTA is on a highly dynamic T-Mobile /40 range that hops rapidly: 2607:FB91:1100:0:0:0:0:0/40 (block range · block log (global) · WHOIS (partial)). Looks like a /42 block didn't help. wizzito | say hello! 16:40, 27 January 2022 (UTC)

49.204.211.84 needs a longer block

Hi. Since you previously blocked this user, I thought I'd let you know that their persistent violations of Wikipedia policy has continued, and that they've ignored an entire talk page of repeated warnings, the most recent of which I just noted on their talk page. I think they could use a longer block. Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 16:14, 10 March 2022 (UTC)

 Done. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 16:26, 10 March 2022 (UTC)

Hello, Jauerback,

Apparently, you gave this editor a username block right before their username was changed from representing a company, User:Pier Insurance, to representing an individual. They haven't requested to be unblocked but I noticed the name change that came right after the block so I thought I'd let you know. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 06:07, 15 March 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know. Rather than wait, I went ahead and unblocked them for now. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 13:09, 15 March 2022 (UTC)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

For this block [8]; I was sitting down to ask Drmies or ToBeFree for their assistance when I noticed your action. I think there's a longer rangeblock merited, given not only the persistent addition/changing of unsourced content, but the repeated contentiousness and insulting of other editors. Based on behavior, I'm guessing this was once a registered and now blocked account, who's continuing along the same path. If they return from the block for more of the same, I'll either drop you a line or put together something for ANI. Thanks again, 2601:188:180:B8E0:0:0:0:3597 (talk) 21:12, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

Automated Retail

So, it’s fine for Zoom systems and Redbox, but not for a company that’s been doing it for over a decade? Happy to adjust my contribution as you see fit. 208.102.168.243 (talk) 03:15, 2 July 2022 (UTC)

Don't edit if you are just planning on promoting your company. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 03:18, 2 July 2022 (UTC)

You didn’t answer my question. This isn’t my company. Simply trying to add some context to a page by citing a decade-old source from what is obviously a leader in the industry. If you could provide an alternate way to approach this, I would be happy to follow your advice. I looked at the previous edits and saw that you marked Signify as spam, which is accurate, but their image remains on the page. The company I referenced in my edit is not even included in the text. Only the notes. The sole purpose of my edit was to add context to a page with limited content that clearly promotes only two businesses in a booming international industry. Would media coverage sources be preferable? I’m obviously new to Wikipedia edits and would appreciate any tips you’re willing to offer. Thanks for your help. Wilcohum (talk) 04:22, 2 July 2022 (UTC)

Wilcohum, you need to find a reliable source (e.g. news article, book, journal, etc.) that states the information that you wish to add. Linking to a company's webpage and pretending that it's a "source" is considered spam. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 14:52, 2 July 2022 (UTC)

James Caan

I'm wondering why you reverted 13 edits to the James Caan article, after his family had announced his death on Caan's own Twitter account. I notice that you didn't restore these edits later (for example, changing "he describes himself" to "he described himself"), instead, leaving it to other editors to re-do the work. Seems like a waste of everyone's time.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding WP:TWITTER, but the family's announcement didn't involve a third party (it involved the holder of the account himself), and the death of an octogenarian is not an extraordinary claim. Twitter therefore seems to be a reliable source in this case.

In the future, please think twice before reverting other people's work, thank you. -Jordgette [talk] 23:02, 7 July 2022 (UTC)

At the time, there were no reliable sources stating that he had died; only the Twitter account. Per WP:BLP, I would rather err on the side of caution, especially with the death of an individual. So, unfortunately, worrying about "other people's work" is not a concern with a potential BLP violation. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 01:36, 8 July 2022 (UTC)

User with clear misunderstanding of policies

Hello Jauer! I'd like your opinion on a user. Gazd90 seems to have a severe misunderstanding of Wikipedia's policies, attempting to change a redirect into an article when they've been told multiple times that they need to prove the band is notable. They've also been told to read Wikipedia's notability policies, but appear to have refused to do so. I'm considering reporting them to WP:ANI but would like to hear your opinion on the matter first. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 13:50, 20 September 2022 (UTC)

Welcome

Your welcome is appreciated, sorry to ask you so quickly for help. What do I do with a problem user or editor? Could you assist?Extraordinary2 (talk) 23:37, 22 September 2022 (UTC)

It looks like you are discussing the issue on the article's talk page. You need to continue to do that and build a consensus. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 13:52, 23 September 2022 (UTC)
Impossible, the user is not even replying to discussion or attempts at it. On top of that they delete talk posts.Extraordinary2 (talk) 04:34, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
No, that's not what I meant. You don't discuss changes to an article on a user's talk page. You utilized the talk page of the article itself. It looks like you're at least engaging in discussion there. That's where you need to build a consensus for whatever changes you wish to make. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 18:06, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
The user does not engage. That means any attempt to discuss something with them is not doable. You referred to an article's talk page; there is no discussion. I sense you don't get involved however it would be helpful.Extraordinary2 (talk) 07:16, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
Maybe I'm not understanding which article you are referring to. I assumed it was the Andor (TV series) article. If so, you started a discussion on the talk page. Apparently, no one else is participating in the discussion at this point. That's probably a sign that no one is interested and you probably won't be able to establish consensus for your changes. Therefore, you should probably just let it go. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 15:57, 29 September 2022 (UTC)

  • The Articles for creation helper script now automatically recognises administrator accounts which means your name does not need to be listed at WP:AFCP to help out. If you wish to help out at AFC, enable AFCH by navigating to Preferences → Gadgets and checking the "Yet Another AfC Helper Script" box.

ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:32, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

  • A new preference named "Enable limited width mode" has been added to the Vector 2022 skin. The preference is also shown as a toggle on every page if your monitor is 1600 pixels or wider. When disabled it removes the whitespace added by Vector 2022 on the left and right of the page content. Disabling this preference has the same effect as enabling the wide-vector-2022 gadget.
