Kiribati election

[edit]

Dear Hanzlan, it is quite difficult to obtain the comprehensive records of the last Parliamentary elections. There are few newspapers (3) but they never publish official results online; and Radio Kiribati (governmental) forecasts the complete results, but there is only a Gilbertese broadcast and no podcast or publications. Since 2016, the official results are published by the new Ministry of Justice (Kiribati). But they did not put all the data on Facebook (only partial). Facebook is the main social network there: Air Kiribati publishes its schedule only on Facebook and so does the Office of te Beretitenti and most officials. Recently MWYSSA published the complete lists of all the people names' allowances (when they have no work or revenue). So after elections I have wrote a mail to the Ministry: after some delay, they have sent to me the official results on an Excel sheet. Very poor situation, I may transfer to you those complete and official results (1st round and 2nd round). Do not forget that most of the candidates choose their party only after the first meeting (like Dr Tinte in Betio). So it is quite vain to calculate the results on a party basis. Tinte was an independent candidate before joining TKP on 22 May 2020. Do not hesitate to ask me what you need.--Arorae (talk) 18:54, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Arorae, thank you very much for these clarifications. Being used to political parties from my home in Austria, it took me some time to understand Kiribati politics. The elections seem much more personal than ideological than here in Europe and the forming of parties rather sounds to me like the formation of opportunist political alliances of independent candidates than a formation solely based on ideology (which is the case in European politics as well, just a little bit less apparent). Nevertheless, I've read that the question of political affiliation towards China or Taiwan has been a clear split in Kiribati politics over the last years. So I was thinking of creating a second column with political party affiliation (TKP/BTK/KMP/Independent) of the 44 MPs before their elections, if possible. Many Kiribati politicians seem to switch parties from time to time, for example one of the current TKP ministers has been a BTK member in the 11th Maungatabu from 2016-2020, that's interesting. Do you think it would be possible to categorize the candidates (elected and not elected) of the parliamentary election into the four categories TKP, BTK, KMP, Independent or is this an impossible task? If it is ok for you, I would be really glad if you could send me the results of the parliamentary elections to andreas.hanzl@gmx.at With best regards, --Hanzlan (talk) 20:36, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Parties exist since 1965, but they are not like in Austria or generally Europe. No congress, no platform, only Facebook accounts. Now you have only 2 political parties in the Maneaba; BKM the official opposition and KTP the "COmmunist" party, forming the Cabinet. It is not the official name, of course. But BKM members joke with that. The main difference between the two, is the alliance with China or Taiwan. FRom 2003 to last year, only TAiwan has official relations. one year ago, KTP decided to swift without consulting the Parliament, as a result the PResident faced a no confidence vote. BUt the SPeaker (on the side of te BEretitenti) decided not to make vote the Parliament and closed the session on NOvember, to avoid the immediate end of the CAbinet. so BAnuera, my own lawyer, made a call to HIgh COurt to condamn the SPeaker. High COurt ruled that BAnuera was right but the SPeaker refused nevertheless to open a new session. after that, BAnuera left TKP to create his own party (KIribati MOa) and then was designated as the opposition candidate for the new party BKM (all the 10 MPs of KM joined the new party). THis party was only created during the first session of the MAneaba, on 22 MAy 2020, but had already a Facebook account at the 2020 beginning. MOst of the candidates did not declare their own party before election. BAnuera for example was the chairman of KMP, but never spoke of his KMP during the campaign, only about the not born yet BKM, because he wished to be the PResidential candidate. and with 10 MPs only he has no chance. 22 MPs voted for him, 22 MPs voted for TAneti, what means in a WEstminster system a hung parliament. FIrst time ever, and because of that the COnstitution was not applied (3 or 4 candidates are compulsory). THe new SPeaker (BKM), a woman, waited more than one hour that 3rd or 4th candidate would be designated. NO way. the 2 benches were silent.

of course, also the former SPeaker was defeated and did not receive the 22 votes of the majority because nobody trusts him anymore. BUt BAnuera was not a good candidate and he received less fundings from CHina. IT was a Scylla and Charibdis issue. and I-KIribati choose reelection of the former BEretitenti, [excuse my typo]. I have sent You the mail with full results. PUt some order in that mess will be very uneasy. yours,--Arorae (talk) 21:44, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Arorae!
Thank you for this detailed information and the full list of results! It is indeed kind of messy to work with, but as you have seen I have added some details like the percentages of each elected candidate.
I am not sure that adding the percentage is conform to the WP rules, because no one has published it before you calculate, even I-Kiribati will be surprised to discover it. The electoral system is that you are elected at first round with more than 50% ballots, and I have checked each result and you have done a GREAT work. Thanks! --Arorae (talk) 19:26, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I also like the results by constituency like they did in 2019 Tuvaluan general election, but with 23 constituencies this would get quite large for Kiribati. The only thing I could imagine for the results table is counting together all votes for the elected party members and counting the rest of the votes for the non-elected members, but it doesn't really make sense to be honest. It's impossible and shouldn't be done to force these results into a European voting system.

Agree !--Arorae (talk) 19:26, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
But I have to more questions not directly related to the article but to Kiribati politics. Due to this situation of no majority in the Maneaba ni Maungatabu 22:22, does it have an effect on the power of the representative of Rabi Island? In theory, he is the one vote needed for a majority of 23, but I have read the representative hasn't reached Kiribati on time for the first session of the Maneaba.
He normally never attends. Travelling from Rabi to Fiji is already like an odyssey. and there are no planes between Fiji (Nadi) and Tarawa since March 2020, and the next flight scheduled will be in January 2020 (but I think it will be postponed or cancelled until the end of Covid crisis). But of course as a nonpartisan member, he will be relevant (and will ask something for Banabans). Rabi representatives are very corrupted (and not elected).--Arorae (talk) 19:26, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The second question is about the inhabitants of Kanton Island. Are they represented in any constituency or are they simply not allowed to vote?
Normally the 20 inhabitants should vote. they did in 2016, not in 2020. Their nearest constituency is Christmas Island. There was an issue because the Electoral Commissionner forgot their votes in 2020. even for the presidential election.--Arorae (talk) 19:26, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you again for working on Kiribati articles here on Wikipedia. It is really valuable to have someone here who has been there. With best regards, --Hanzlan (talk)
how do you know that ? I already told you ? I visit Tarawa once a year and Kiritimati every 2 or 3 years. Do you like more private information about those islands? with best regards.--Arorae (talk) 19:26, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Meeting lodge ?

[edit]

dear, the maneaba are not a meeting "lodge", because they are multifunction buildings, very big ones, the people without houses sleep inside, and it is as sacred as a Church with many rules to respect. with my regards.--Arorae (talk) 18:21, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Arorae!
Well, I just added the links and corrected spelling errors, but meeting lodge seemed a bit odd to me too. I agree with you. Changed it, thank you for the clarifications. --Hanzlan (talk) 18:59, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello. I have noticed that you often edit without using an edit summary. Please do your best to always fill in the summary field. This helps your fellow editors use their time more productively, rather than spending it unnecessarily scrutinizing and verifying your work. Even a short summary is better than no summary. WP:ESL can help make writing summaries quick and easy! Zazpot (talk) 16:46, 15 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Zazpot. Thank you for this remark, you are right, I am pretty lazy when it comes to documenting my work. I will try to follow your advice more thoroughly. With best regards, --Hanzlan (talk) 17:02, 15 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Commonwealth English

[edit]

Dear Friend

Please could you tell me the difference between British English and Commonwealth English? I have no idea until your change.--Arorae (talk) 15:00, 24 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

To be honest, I can't. I simply noticed this template could fit better for Kiribati than British English, but according to the talk page Template talk:Use Commonwealth English it seems there isn't any difference to British English. --Hanzlan (talk) 15:19, 24 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Strangely in Kiribati the English language spoken is very British but because the isolation people put many local words that are not English words. And of course nobody has an English accent, a proper one.--Arorae (talk) 15:29, 24 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, List of ecoregions in São Tomé and Príncipe. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – São Tomé, Príncipe, and Annobón forests. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at São Tomé, Príncipe, and Annobón forests. If you have new information to add, you might want to discuss it at the article's talk page.

If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. Mccapra (talk) 22:08, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
