Draft creation
Hi. As you're probably aware, there's a recent thread which touched on your creation and submission of drafts. I've been asked to comment on this. I've noticed that you have a tendency to create large numbers of short drafts. Looking at your contribution log, I see 100 new drafts in the last two months. Most of these are about interesting, historical topics, which is a good thing. The encyclopedia suffers badly from WP:RECENTISM and self-promotion; so it's truly gratifying to me that we have editors who write about the kinds of topics you do.
That being said, I think you would be a more valuable contributor if you started fewer new articles, and invested more time working on each one to explore the topic in greater depth before you submit them for review. As you research each topic, you might discover that there's just not enough good sources out there to support every draft passing our notability requirements. That's fine. I start plenty of articles that never get past the stage of a few random notes or a bare outline. You can see a few of them in my userspace drafts collection.
In my career as a software developer, one of the difficult things I had to learn was Egoless programming. It's not about getting your stuff published. It's about advancing the bigger project. If something you write is declined or rejected, try not to get too worked up over it, or defensive about the feedback. Spend some time trying to understand the issues your reviewer found. Sometimes you can fix the problem by doing more work on it. Sometimes, it's best to just accept that this isn't going anywhere and move onto something else.
-- RoySmith (talk) 16:32, 8 July 2019 (UTC)
- Hello User:RoySmith. Are Userspace drafts deleted after 6 months? One of the issues I'm facing is a relentless flow of drafts on notable subjects nominated for speedy deletions. As far as drafts on non-notable subjects, which ones do you think aren't notable? I am happy to discuss. FloridaArmy (talk) 18:50, 8 July 2019 (UTC)
- Drafts in userspace are exempt from WP:G13 until you put a {{AFC submission}} template on them. So, working on early drafts in your userspace is probably a good thing to do. If you look at that collection of drafts in my userspace that I linked to above, you'll notice some have been hanging around for years with nobody bothering them or me. This totally removes the time pressure to get something done before the G13 clock runs out.
As for specific problematic drafts, the best way to get a handle on that is to just look at which drafts of yours have been declined. As I said, don't think of the declines as defeats, think of them as constructive feedback. The one specific draft which gave rise to this thread is Draft:Frank Cherry, which was rejected, and then you resubmitted with only minor changes. You would have done better to discuss with Winged Blades of Godric to find out why they felt it was not notable. Simply resubmitting it without addressing the core problem wasn't likely to be productive. -- RoySmith (talk) 19:21, 8 July 2019 (UTC)
- Frank Cherry established one of the first Black Israelite churches and has received very substantial coverage. In fact, he's still being discussed more than a 100 years after his death. Keep in mind not all sources are readily availavle online so I added a further reading section. More of an expert on the subjext area than I am affirmed the subject as notable. So it's a good example of a notable subject that should be in mainspace where our coverage is lacking especially in that area. As far as WBG he also declined Draft:Pinellas High School and other manifestly notavle subjects. This in addition to other policy violations. FloridaArmy (talk) 20:22, 8 July 2019 (UTC)
- If you want to know why WBG rejected your draft, you should ask him, not me. -- RoySmith (talk) 20:41, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

Drewmutt (^ᴥ^) talk 02:12, 12 July 2019 (UTC)Your submission at Articles for creation: Alton Redd (July 11)
- User:Zingarese how did you come across this draft? FloridaArmy (talk) 02:13, 12 July 2019 (UTC)
Draft resubmissions without fixing problems
Draft:Alton Redd was recently declined by Winged Blades of Godric. You resubmitted it with no changes, and no response to WBG's comments. That's not useful, and just wastes everybody's time. Please don't do it again. -- RoySmith (talk) 19:34, 11 July 2019 (UTC)
- WBG did not address my comments on notability on the talk page. He also has a history of dirlsruptive and abusive actions towards me. Clean up your act Roy. You're better than this. You don't think a Jazz drummer who's been covered in Billboard for his albums, who's noted as a major player in the LA jazz scene, who appears in movies such as Citizen Kane and performs internationally with notable artists and bands isn't notable? You're way off base. FloridaArmy (talk) 02:11, 12 July 2019 (UTC)
- Let me suggest a compromise. Winged Blades of Godric, leave FloridaArmy's drafts alone. Let other people review them. There's plenty of other work you can do.
In return, FloridaArmy, you put more effort into writing better drafts. That includes taking reviewer's comments more seriously, accepting that not every draft will end up in mainspace, and being more selective about which you submit.
And, both of you make a stronger effort to WP:AGF on the other's part. You are both, in your own ways, advancing our goal of writing an encyclopedia, even if there's some friction between the two of you in the ways you're going about doing it. -- RoySmith (talk) 14:19, 12 July 2019 (UTC)
- Let me suggest a compromise. Winged Blades of Godric, leave FloridaArmy's drafts alone. Let other people review them. There's plenty of other work you can do.
- This is a long-term problem and asking politely that they stop is likely not going to help. FloridaArmy was banned in 2018 from article creation and banned from the AFD process in 2018. FA can only use AFC for article creation. See the discussion at ANI where this is said: "FloridaArmy is prohibited from creating new articles in mainspace or participating or AFD. AFC is available for new articles they want to create and it seems reasonable to allow a single comment/opinion to be offered in AFDs created by FA." The problems that led to the ban were the same one we see here: CIR, IDHT etc.ThatMontrealIP (talk) 14:38, 12 July 2019 (UTC)

- User:MJL, fortunately those aren't the only sources cited. Also, John Howard Reid is cited in a great many of our articles, see here. If he's not a reliable source there is a great deal of work to do. FloridaArmy (talk) 17:20, 3 August 2019 (UTC)

- User:MJL I added a link to some additional sources on the article talk page. I think this should be enough to establish notability. Also, I don't think I used IMDb to build the article. IBDB is cited and lists a bunch of theatrical productions he was involved with and his roles. Seems legitimate to me. As far as IMDb, it list lots more films he was involved in, so even if it's not reliable in and of itself it can be used as the basis to expand the article going forward and shows the subject was had significant roles in LOTS of notable productions. Your uploads of ATLIB images.
I see you have added ATLIB images to various articles. Don't you think you should attribute them to ATLIB, which is a condition of use? Moriori (talk) 01:41, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
- The photographs are attributed if you click on them. My understanding is that on Wikipedia we don't generally include such source information. If others disagree they are welcome to add note of the holding institution but my experience on Wikipedia is that the consensus is such attribution on the photo itself is adequate and is not required within encyclopedia entries. FloridaArmy (talk) 01:50, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
- The most recent one you added, to Hone Heke, contains in the file summary the following stipulation, "Permission. (Reusing this file). Any publication must be accompanied by the credit "Godber Collection, Alexander Turnbull Library". I take that as meaning in the caption below the image. Moriori (talk) 02:21, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, that information accompanies the photograph as you discovered when you clicked on it. That's where all the licensing and detailed source information is located. I am following practice as indicated and explained to me in working with phorographs here previously. If you'd like to seek out a broader consensus or clarification from those with greater expertise, I am happy to listen but this is how I've been instructed when I've tried to include such information in photo captions. FloridaArmy (talk) 02:41, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
- OK. Seems a bit odd that when someone specifically asks us to attribute the source we actually hide the source where the reader can't see it. Still, I don't know all the rules so I've dropped a query to Commons. Cheers Moriori (talk) 02:55, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
- I can see both points of view. The argument I've seen is that we only want captions to include what's relevant to the article itself and that licensing info and other details go on the photo page itself. Unless an artist is notable, even when they request attribution similar practice seems to be followed. Whether attibution on the photopage is enough I don't know but I try to do what I'm told.
