BQZip01 RfA
No major objection to your post (we're all entitled to our own opinions), but for clarification, I explicitly stated that I want to be involved in WP:AN (where admin rights are needed to close out backlogs), and not FAC (where admin rights are not needed). Additionally, where is the time requirement between nominations? Had I known there was a time policy I certainly wouldn't have bothered...or am I completely misreading this and this is your personal opinion? If so, what is your logic on time between applications? Again, strictly questions about your comments for my personal edification, not questioning your opinion. — BQZip01 — talk 03:41, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
- [joke]Oppose because I am an Aggie!!?!? That is WAY out of line for a superior officer to...hmm...never mind...I see your point there (us Aggies are sometimes a little...oh what is the word for it...oh yes...slow). I must admit, I am personally of the belief that "Aggie jokes" don't exist; they are all based on true stories. [random agression for humorous effect] Perhaps I should propose removing you for undue influence by virtue of rank!!![/random agression for humorous effect]...sir? Is that a court-martial offense or merely an Article 15 incident? [/joke] (I took some serious time in writing this in order to not appear insubordinate, but humorous. It was strictly intended as such)
- On a lighter.more personal note, where do you serve, sir? — BQZip01 — talk 22:09, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
- When you stated that I didn't have a lot of admin-related tasks, I beg to differ. I have been involved in both WP:SSP and others especially in the past few weeks. Just an FYI. — BQZip01 — talk 04:23, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
Hi,
Just to let you know that a new template has been created for one of the queries your answered to. Please see this to understand what I mean. The template explains about Capitalisation of usernames to the IP.

I'm going to try again
Hi Dreamafter,
I haven't forgotten your kind offer to nominate me at RFA (gentle reminder that you said it in print and can't get out of it). I've kind of re-thought my reasons for not trying another RFA; rather than regugitate them here, I'll link to a conversation with MastCell earlier this evening. Are you interested in co-nominating with MastCell and Pedro? If so, I believe MastCell will be setting the page up in the next few days, and I'd be honored if you added a few words. If you're no longer interested, then... ZOMG I just canvassed! It's doomed to failure before it started...
Seriously, though, thanks for the kind words in December. --barneca (talk) 04:48, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
- Saw your comment on MastCell's talk page. You might be waiting a while on that page going active; I'm hoping/planning on never needing Barneca 3. I'm hoping Barneca 2 is all we'll need. :) --barneca (talk) 15:05, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
Bot
Hi. I have created around 14,000 articles on wikipedia, higher than anybody, and am currently adding Frebnch communes at bot speed around 6 a minute and have requested that my new articles are automatically filtered but noone seems to be concerned. I have addressed this to several people but no one has taken it seriously when I said I was concerned about clogging up new pages even when I am adding general content. I refused adminship long ago but surely I am respected enough to be regarded as admin level in editing. I always add valuable content and most of my articles are referenced except such stubs. Isn't it time somebody made a decision to help new page patrollers by helping them. I;ve contributed tens times more than many adminstrators on wikipedia (107,000 edits) who automatically have their page unmarked -shouldn't mine be the same on a permanent basis? I consistenly add new content to wikipedia which is generally referenced and useful content. Deforestation in Brazil is what I am capable of. It would help patollers a lot. Any idea if you can help me receive permanent clearance? ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ Talk? 23:00, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
The thing is I'd rather have my edits on one account. Its not that important -more muiportant is getting these articles at least blue linked when they have been on many other smaller wikipedias for years and we are lagging behind in this area, Could you help me set up a User:BaldBot and get me clearance? ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ Talk? 11:00, 30 January 2008 (UTC).

Thanks for the headsup. The edit looked of vandalism, as it only said "CLEAR" in the edit description. Again, thanks. ~QuasiAbstract (talk/contrib) 14:16, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Order of Saint Charles
Dear Dreamafter,
You seem to have written most of the article on the "Order of Saint Charles" of Monaco. I believe that it is full of mistakes.
- The grand Officer does not wear two "awards". These are not awards in their own right. They are the star and the badge, or cross, of the order.
- The chest riband is not the "traditional" way to wear an order. It is nowadays common, in the past necklets, ribbons tied around he neck and collars were used.
- The crosses and stars of the order are not "tainted silver"! The are made of silver or gilded silver.
- The badge of an order is not the same as a medal. A medal is round or oval and it is usually the lowest grade in an order. The knights wear a cross or badge.
In America everything is called "medal", but phaleristic literature distinghuises between stars, badges (the Legion d'Honneur has a jewel that is not a cros, it is therefore called a badge) and crosses.
Faithfully yours,
Robert Prummel

BAG
Hi. Why did you speedily approve BaldBot (talk · contribs), even though you were the coder of it? Seems fishy to me - I tell a lie, it seems totally unacceptable to me as a conflict of interest. Anyway, my message to you is to please not do it again, and try to avoid unilaterally deciding BRFAs - wait for another member to provide input. This whole "double checking" procedure is something I've advocated since before the big BAG reform, and it becomes far more necessary now that there is open access to the group. I will be making a post to WT:BAG and WT:BRFA now to remind all of the BAG members of the need for care, and will again be advocating reversal of the current system back to a more stringent system where members are made more aware of what is expected. Thanks, Martinp23 20:18, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
- I've revoked the bot approval by way of blocking the bot. Martinp23 20:21, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
- He doesn't need a bot flag nor approval if it's manually assisted. More details are needed, ideally on the BRFA page. Martinp23 20:41, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
- As far as I've seen in the past, we don't give bot flags to humans. I may be wrong. My take on it is that humans are far more prone to mess up than bots are. Clearly, more input is needed. Martinp23 20:45, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
- He doesn't need a bot flag nor approval if it's manually assisted. More details are needed, ideally on the BRFA page. Martinp23 20:41, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
Quick note to more personally say sorry for misunderstanding and jumping to an incorrect conclusion. Martinp23 20:49, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

BAG Changes
Hello. You may remember, some time ago, joining the BAG under the trial "open membership" system. Based on a lack of opposition to a reversion of this trial, I have now decided to be bold and perform it. The BAG has returned to a system under which users must go through a short period of discussion (like RfA, but less formal) before being added to the group by either a 'crat or an existing member. At the moment, I have said that discussions should last for 10 days and that community noticeboards should be spammed to encourage participation in each request - evidently this is to avoid the "cabal" impression.
As you have already been a member for some time, you're likely to be an excellent candidate to apply to the group and I encourage you to do so. Alternatively, if you totally disagree with my changes and fail to see any merit in them at all, I'm hoping to take part in discussions on WT:BAG. Though I must ask now if I may - please don't revert me without a decent amount of discussion first. Thanks, and if you have any questions about what I've done, please leave me a message, send an email or chat on IRC. Martinp23 17:29, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Your edit to my userpage
Hi, could you explain why you felt it necessary to make this edit to my userpage? - Neparis (talk) 03:54, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
- Yes I can explain it, I did it because a lot of users dislike redirects and so I changed it for that reason only. ~ Dreamy § 19:54, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
- (copying your reply here per my talk page instructions) Well, what you are doing is contrary to the guideline WP:REDIRECT: Do not change links to redirects that are not broken. Maybe you were not aware of this guideline, but I think it is a very good guideline, based on consensus, and we should all follow it. I would ask you, please, not to edit my userpage again (per WP:UP#OWN). I hope you won't mind my asking you, but I really prefer to keep my userpage in my own style. Thanks! - Neparis (talk) 20:10, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
- (copying again) If you had actually read my response, I didn't do it for myself, but for others that dislike it, I have dozens of e-mails requesting that they be changed, just so you know. ~ Dreamy § 20:14, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
- Excuse me, but I did read your reply. What you did is wrong because it is clearly against WP:REDIRECT. My userpage is my business, not yours. It does not matter how many complaints or email requests you have. You should tell those people to read the guideline. Please take my advice, or if you doubt me, check with somebody else on WP:AN. - Neparis (talk) 20:30, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
- (copying again)Just so you know, I have already admitted to a mistake, stop attempting to order me around, I have been here longer, and have racked up more contibutions than you, and if you read the very first sentence of this you'll see that it clearly states that "user space still belongs to the community", so I am technically in the right with having edited the page, but in violation of a semi-policy. ~ Dreamy § 20:53, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
- I appreciate you were acting in good faith, and your climbdown, though perhaps you can point me to where you "already admitted to a mistake", because I failed to see that. Anyway, from the guideline you cited
- Neparis (talk) 21:15, 24 February 2008 (UTC)In some cases a more experienced editor may make a non-trivial edit to your userpage, in which case that editor should leave a note on your talk page explaining why this was done. This should not be done for trivial reasons.
- Ah, whatever, I probably should have mentioned it, but I thought it was much to trivial to bother mention it, ah well, sorry for not mentioning it. ~ Dreamy § 21:22, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
- Ok, no harm done, and thanks for the apology. I hope our editing paths cross again in happier circumstances. See you around. - Neparis (talk) 21:27, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

I am not sure if I understand why reverted my addition (see [1]). What do you mean exactly by saying "Doesn't need that, does not include references"? I do think that the information about recipients is relevant... Obviously having the key recipients listed in the article would have been better (and having the Estonian website as a reference). Actually, I did think it was a vandalism. It has been a target of vandalism before, that is why it is semi-protected, if you haven't noticed. Updating the clock without simultaneously updating the DYK can lead to serious disruption of the process. Can you explain why you made such edit with the edit summary "Updated it"? It doesn't make much sense. --BorgQueen (talk) 18:06, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
- You see, I hadn't read the template properly before I edited it, and I made the mistake of updating what I though was just the time, not the clock for the next update, it was a genuine mistake, and as you said, it is semi-protected, I am obviously able to edit it, and I would consider myself an experienced user. I am sorry for my inconvenience, and I hope you noticed that I did not revert you, I explained, and asked for an explanation. Again, truly sorry. The only real reason that I knew of the pages' existence is that I have contributed to the DYK before, see here for proof of that. ~ Dreamy § 20:28, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
Milhist stuff
Hi there Dreamafter, I have reverted your change to the newsletter, that article was promoted in March so it is in the March 2008 newsletter. Also, I couldn't help but notice when I was tallying up the contest entries that you are assessing your own articles. Generally this shouldn't be done, mainly for reasons of nepotism, and the fact that we are blind when it comes to our own articles. If you want an article assessed, just list it at WP:MHA#REQ and someone will do it for you. Great job on the articles for this month, though they all do need a bit of expansion before GA. Regards. Woody (talk) 22:49, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Dreamafter, by the way quoting the updated FAC instructions: "Graphics are discouraged (for example, Done or Not done), as they slow down the page load time." Sandy doesn't like people breaking up the text so I would just list what you have done to resolve the issues in a paragraph underneath his issues. If you have any questions or need any help, just leave a note on my talkpage. Woody (talk) 22:39, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

- Ha, don’t put too much confidence in my linguistic abilities. ;) Perhaps the “Description” section could be divided into two, more general parts (e.g. “Turret” - the distinguishing feature - and “Chassis”)? Ammo, howitzer, etc. info would go in "turret" and engine, gearbox, weight, armor, etc. in "chassis". Obviously, there would be some overlap (e.g. armor), but I don’t know that there’s really a right way to do it. ЭLСОВВОLД talk 17:56, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

Hey there Dreamafter. Just wanted to say thanks for your vote of confidence on my unsuccessful RfA. I recently found your name on the member page, and, knowing that you are fair, honest and not above giving out criticism, so I was wondering if you could check this page for basic alterations and copy-editing. Only help out there if you have the spare time, and if you're interested. ~ Cheers! Dreamy § 22:47, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, how're you going?
- I've looked at the page, and I'm really not sure how much I can do. Really the main thing I see that needs to be done is reorganising the way the references are set out, but I really don't know how to do that...
- I've reformatted a couple of things, but other than that, I think this is someone else project.
- Sorry I couldn't help more! CattleGirl talk 10:19, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
- I am fine, how would you prefer that the references were better laid out? ~ Cheers! Dreamy § 20:56, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
- I had some spare time, so I fixed a couple more things. With the references, they're pretty good, I've just deleted a couple of refs that were already cited just beforehand (you can see what I've done in the history of the page) or shuffled around the order they were in. It's looking good! Cheers- CattleGirl talk 08:38, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Hello Dreamafter, I have a question about the page I linked to in the header. In February 2007 (approximately a year ago) it looks as though User:Jaranda (now Secret) deleted the page, though I could not find a relevant AFD/PROD/CSD tag. What was the precedent for deleting the article? Since it's in the "To be written" section of the AF Wikiproject box, I was thinking of creating it (since I've seen there for several months). Hope you can help me. Thanks, GlobeGores (talk page | user page) 18:01, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
- Okay, I see it at User:Dreamafter/Drafts. Thanks. GlobeGores (talk page | user page) 23:36, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
- I'm drafting a (originally) draft of the article at User:GlobeGores/Magic (Artemis Fowl) Feel free to change anything or improve anything you see there! Cheers, GlobeGores (talk page | user page) 01:07, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Milhist contest
Just a note to say that after a discussion by the coordinators, it was thought best if a coordinator closes and updates the contest page. I will leave it to someone else to gauge my articles though it seems redundant this month as I had to disappear for two weeks. Hope this clarifies everything. Thankyou for your continued interest in Milhist. Woody (talk) 18:03, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

You have already admitted – and the checkuser report independently confirms – that you and CD-MD share the same IP address. The checkuser report cannot of course establish who was using the computer so, assuming good faith, your explanation is within the realm of possibility. However, it is unlikely that a similar explanation will be accepted as plausible if there are any recurrences.
To protect yourself in future, you are advised to study Wikipedia policy on sockpuppets, in particular, the sections on meatpuppets and roommates. The penalties for sockpuppetry can be severe. For the avoidance of doubt, here are extracts from sockpuppet policy:
- If a person is found to be using a sock puppet, the sock puppet accounts may be blocked indefinitely. The main account also may be blocked at the discretion of any administrator.
If two users live or work together, their accounts may appear to be sock puppets ... To avoid accusations of sock puppetry, such users may want to make an advance declaration on their user pages. Closely connected users may be considered a single user for Wikipedia's purposes if they edit towards the same objectives. When editing the same articles, participating in the same community discussion, or supporting each other in any sort of dispute, closely related accounts should disclose the connection and observe relevant policies such as three revert rule as if they were a single account. If they do not wish to disclose the connection, they should avoid editing in the same areas.
It is a great pity that this has come up because you are a promising and valued contributor to the encyclopedia. I trust that we can now put this behind us. --ROGER DAVIES talk 05:57, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Rudeness
Trust me, if you'd seen the (since-deleted) material he posted, you'd completely agree with my wording. DS (talk) 01:47, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
- Actually, I believe I was thinking of another problem user. Jonferris's deleted contribs were crap, yes, but I concede that I may have been overly harsh towards him. That said, he has started an RfA for himself - with an edit history of 5. Not a good sign. DS (talk) 01:58, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, and for the record, we damn well can kick people out of the free, anyone-can-edit encyclopedia, and we do - typically for very good reasons. As for the material on Cronenworth - it's just a little bit of a bio blurb, with no notability asserted, and submitted by the man's son. "SFC Cronenworth served in Company/Regiment, he was wounded in the hand and arm on (date), he was wounded a year later also, he got the Silver Star and the Purple Heart." To put it bluntly, what else is there? We don't list people just because they got the Silver Star and Purple Heart. There has to be something more. DS (talk) 02:03, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
With regard to blocking policy
Dragonfly67 did not invent the blocking policy. See WP:BLOCK for more information, and ask your question at the talk page there. But leave him alone please. This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Jamie Hammond, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://www.csor.forces.gc.ca/en/biography_e.asp. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences.
This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 21:35, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
As you requested, I have restored the text of Jamie Hammond to User:Dreamafter/Jamie Hammond. You are free to work on the article in your userspace. However, I would encourage you to read WP:BIO and WP:COPYVIO to understand the relevant Wikipedia policies and guidelines. No point in spending a lot of effort on the article only to see it get deleted for violating policies and guidelines for Wikipedia articles.

Unspecified source for Image:Flight_Cadets_1942.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Flight_Cadets_1942.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 00:03, 13 June 2008 (UTC). For everything listed above, I was getting the content permission sent in to the WikiMedia Foundation, however, many users have been annoying me and I have gotten false accusations, and as such I am going on an indefinite WikiBreak, delete them if you must, remove my contributions if you must, but I worked hard, and I finally understand what RickK meant when he wrote :
"There is a fatal flaw in the system. Vandals, trolls and malactors are given respect, whereas those who are here to actually create an encyclopedia, and to do meaningful work, are slapped in the face and not given the support needed to do the work they need to do.
There is no reason to continue here."
I am finished here, except for a couple of edits here and there I think... To any admin that sees this message, would they please delete all of my subpages, except for my mainpage, and the WikiCup pages. The wikiCup pages should be moved to User:WBOSITG namespace. Wikipedia:Articles requested for more than a year
Hi Dreamafter. With the year almost up, we're making an effort to reduce the number of listings at Wikipedia:Articles requested for more than a year. You've been a big help in the past with that project page and I am hoping that you can knock out a few to contribute to the effort. Thanks. Bebestbe (talk) 20:29, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Flight Cadets 1942.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:Flight Cadets 1942.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:57, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

Royal Canadian Air Cadets GA Sweeps Review: On Hold
As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the GA criteria and I'm specifically going over all of the "Culture and Society" articles. I have reviewed Royal Canadian Air Cadets and believe the article currently meets the majority of the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article. In reviewing the article, I have found there are some issues that may need to be addressed, and I'll leave the article on hold for seven days for them to be fixed. I have left this message on your talk page since you have significantly edited the article (based on using this article history tool). Please consider helping address the several points that I listed on the talk page of the article, which shouldn't take too long to fix with the assistance of multiple editors. I have also left messages on the talk pages for other editors and related WikiProjects to spread the workload around some. If you have any questions, let me know on my talk page and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. --Nehrams2020 (talk) 07:54, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Image copyright problem with Image:Wolf_Armoured_Vehicle.jpg
Thank you for uploading Image:Wolf_Armoured_Vehicle.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? -Nard 14:13, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Just a heads up
I thought you might like to know that the Awards Center page has been deleted, along with its newsletter. :(
So, where do we go from here?
To new and even more interesting projects, of course!
As announced in the newsletter, I've been preparing to co-coordinate a large collaboration/competition called Around the World. It was going to be run at the Awards Center, but since that no longer exists, the collaboration will be hosted somewhere else.
Around the World will begin July 15th as planned - it's location will be announced soon.
It'll be a blast. In the competition, participants will be helping to develop over 200 pages (drafts, which will be moved to article space once they are ready), using advanced tools to edit every single one of them!
This is going to be interesting.
And the event shall have awards which are being created specifically for it as we speak!
If you would like me to keep you informed of this and other interesting collaborations I'll be working on and/or organizing in the future, please drop me a note on my talk page, and I'll be happy to keep you in the know.
I look forward to your reply.
Sincerely,

What is Around the World?
It's a collaboration!
A collaboration using advanced wiki-tools!
The event is being co-sponsored by Wikiproject Lists of basic topics and WikiProject Geography, and participants will be "traveling" all around "the World" visiting each country online (here on Wikipedia) as they apply advanced wiki-tools to improve pieces of the profiles of each and every country on Earth!. Each pass through these pages is a "trip around the World..."
The set of pages we are working is currently located at Wikipedia:WikiProject Lists of basic topics.
Each page presents essential information on each country in a topic outline format, for ease of overviewing and navigating. Most of the topics presented are linkified, which turns these pages into a hypertextual map to material about each country on Wikipedia. When completed, they shall all become part of Wikipedia's contents system.
The pages share a standard format, with the information on each country presented in the same general order. So rather than getting stuck on a single country trying to complete it, each participant works on all 200+ political entities, completing a single data item or detail across all of the pages!
For this they use advanced tools like WP:AWB, Linky, etc. It goes fast, and since others are doing this at the same time, it makes "the World" feel like a beehive, and the participants are its bees. :) The energy is contagious.
And since you are moving from country to country, the tasks make it feel like you are traveling around the world, and you get to learn a little about every country as you do so. This approach also allows for greater efficiency, because by the time you've done 30 or so of a particular item, you've figured out how to finish it faster and more effectively (such as where to find the data or how to make adjustments), and this specialization speeds up development - but more importantly it reduces errors.
The tasks are varied, which adds even more variety to the project. Some tasks are look-ups-and-fill-ins, some are copy and paste, some are image hunts, some are maintenance adjustments, some are link fixing, some are blue-linking (creating an underlying redirect so a link turns blue), some are fact checking, etc.
Standing by to help are co-coordinators, who can lend a helping hand to participants, provide instruction and tips on how to use the tools, and help them find what they are looking for. Co-coordinators also use advanced tools to inspect the work of participants, and touch it up as needed, or if a task was done wrong throughout, point this out to the participant so he or she can make the necessary corrections.
Co-coordinators are working on the set of pages right now, to familiarize themselves with "the World" so they can help more effectively by the time the main event starts. But there's still lots of preparation left to be done, and we are looking for editors experienced in advanced wikitools who would like to become co-coordinators.

Orphaned non-free media (Image:HMAS Quadrant crest.gif)
Thanks for uploading Image:HMAS Quadrant crest.gif.
Thank you. BJBot (talk) 04:45, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Country outlines project update - 2009/03/08
Remember "Around the World"?
Well, we've been around the World, and around again (virtually speaking, on Wikipedia), on this project.
Things have been slowing down again, so it's time for a big push...
We've gone live
This project needed a shot in the arm. Also, its draft pages have been littering Wikipedia's categories for months. The time seemed right to move all the country outline drafts to article space.
WHAT???
Well, the drafts had been sitting in Wikipedia space for a year.
WHAT???
Development has been moving at a snail's pace and we could use the help of the Wikipedia community at large (who are more likely to find these if they are in article space).
WHAT???
Yes, we've gone live. :)
This puts pressure on us to get the blatantly incomplete elements of these outlines done. The only glaring problem is the government branches sections. These need to be corrected ASAP.
I've mentioned THE GOVERNMENT BRANCHES SECTIONS many times to many people over the past year, but the problem just doesn't seem to have been taken seriously. So let me put it another way:
HELP!!! I need your help on this now. Almost all the countries have a government with an executive branch, a legislative branch, and a judicial branch. The links for these branches need to be completed for each country outline:
- Here's a convenient list you can use WP:LINKY on to access and edit these quickly. Please copy the list's link to the top of your talk page so that you can access it easily.
If you spot any standardization in links, and ways we can automate parts of this process, or for groups of countries that have links in common, please let me know!
Administrative support for outlines
There has been growing pressure on me to write up the administrative pages for outlines - their instructions, guidelines, etc. Therefore, I'm now in the process of composing these. Fortunately, it is mostly a matter of gathering material from messages I've written to you guys over the past year. Still, this is taking up most of my time, and I will be buried in these for the foreseeable future.
Traffic control
The next big task after the government branches sections are cleaned up is link support for the outlines.
There's quite a list of links and notices that need to be put in place around Wikipedia, providing access to them to readers, and alerting editors to the need to develop and maintain these pages. This will keep our bot people very busy (and happy).
But the most important thing right now is to get the government branches sections completed. So please, put your bots aside, roll up your shirt sleeves, and start typing.
Thank you.

The big news of course was the seventh project coordinator election covering the period ending 30 September. The quality of the candidates was extremely high, with some of the project's top content builders running alongside highly experienced backroom people. Of the eighteen candidates, sixteen were finally appointed, giving us probably the most rounded coordination team so far. Those elected were: Abraham, B.S., Bellhalla, Cam, Eurocopter, EyeSerene, Ian Rose, Jackyd101, Joe N, Lordoliver, Maralia, MBK004, Nick-D, Roger Davies (lead), Skinny87, The ed17 and TomStar81. Kirill Lokshin continues in his role as coordinator emeritus. Thanks must go to the departing coordinators – Bedford, JonCatalán and Woody – for helping make the project what it is today The C-class referendum, held at the same time, produced a slight majority of votes for introduction, but was insufficient to demonstrate a clear consensus. So, for the time being at least, therefore, the project will continue without C-class. Otherwise, focus is likely be on the Academy and the development of courses to develop reviewing, copy-editing and article-building skills. Some review of our task forces is also probable, perhaps consolidating some of the smaller, quieter, ones. As ever, input from everyone is not only welcomed but positively encouraged. The coordinators' gratitude goes not only to those who participated in the election and referenda but also to everyone who works quietly and conscientiously away to make participation in this project rewarding, successful and productive. Milhist is very fortunate in its membership! Thank you all, Roger Davies talk 16:15, 2 April 2009 (UTC) |

Welcome to a new occasional feature of The Bugle, where over coming issues we'll be exploring some of the roles, tasks, and technical functions that go into creating what archivist and researcher Simon Fowler has described as the best general resource for military history on the internet.† As a project we can rightly be proud of that accolade, and we gratefully acknowledge the debt we owe to those dedicated editors from across Wikipedia that have helped to make the Military history WikiProject what it is today. Many editors' first inkling of milhist's existence is when they spot our project banner on an article talk page. The banner can be easily added to appropriate articles by any editor, by typing {{WPMILHIST}} at (or near) the top of the talk page on a new line, and saving the page with an appropriate edit summary. This short form of the template will add the article to our project, and also flag the article as needing assessment and assignment to a task force by automatically adding it to the unassessed articles and articles with no associated task force categories. As with many templates in use on Wikipedia, additional parameters can be specified. Possibly the most useful to include is the class parameter, because this will help out any editors who come along later to assess the article. To add the class parameter, edit the template markup to look like {{WPMILHIST|class=}}... and if you wish, have a read through the assessment guidance on milhists's quality scale and assign a rating from Stub- to B-Class yourself. A banner template with, for example, a Stub-Class article rating will look like {{WPMILHIST|class=stub}}. Because B-Class is assessed against a checklist it has some additional parameters, so when adding the project banner to an article talk-page, even if you don't intend to assess the article yourself it can be a real help to subsequent editors to include these too. This version of the template can be entered as {{WPMILHIST|class=|B1=|B2=|B3=|B4=|B5=}}. For detailed guidance on exactly what the five B-Class criteria are, see the B-class checklist. Finally, when adding the milhist banner it's useful to assign the article to one (or more) of our task forces. This will help to bring it to the attention of those editors most likely to be interested in, and knowledgeable about, the subject. As with assessment, task force assignment is accomplished by adding a parameter to the template—in this case, simply the name of the task force followed by =yes (or =y). For example, to assign a Start-Class article to the Second World War and Canadian task forces, the template should read {{WPMILHIST|class=start|B1=|B2=|B3=|B4=|B5=|WWII=yes|Canadian=yes}}. For a full list of all the banner template parameters and more detailed usage instructions, see Template:WPMILHIST; if you are unsure as to whether or not an article belongs with milhist or what task force(s) might be appropriate, or if you have any other questions, you are welcome to ask at our main project talk page. Happy templating! EyeSerenetalk †Simon Fowler, Guide to Military History on the Internet, UK:Pen & Sword 2007, ISBN 9781844156061, p. 7

Perhaps the most important—and, indeed, most respected—aspect of the Military History project is our rigorous A-Class Review (ACR) system, which puts articles through the most robust review outside of WP:FAC. Although reviewing might seem daunting to newcomers, this article will give you an outline of three popular reviewing methods so you can actually start contributing yourself.

An exciting opportunity to get involved!
As a member of the Aviation WikiProject or one of its subprojects, you may be interested in testing your skills in the Aviation Contest! I created this contest, not to pit editor against editor, but to promote article improvement and project participation and camraderie. Hopefully you will agree with its usefulness. Sign up here, read up on the rules here, and discuss the contest here. The first round of the contest may not start until September 1st-unless a large number of editors signup and are ready to compete immediately! Since this contest is just beginning, please give feedback here, or let me know what you think on my talkpage. - Trevor MacInnis contribs 00:13, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Looking behind the figures, some other interesting facts emerge. First, 84% of our promoted articles had successfully passed a Milhist A-Class Review before going on to FAC. Second, of the 29 Milhist articles that failed, less than half (41%) had had an A-Class Review. Third, the 97 Milhist articles accounted for 16% of all FACs submitted between January and July of this year. The clear lesson is that if you want a string of featured articles to your credit, you may find Milhist's A-class Review process to be of benefit to you! Roger Davies talk

Greetings to all members of the Military history WikiProject, and to those outside the project who receive this news letter as well! My name is TomStar81, and it with a great sense of pride that I assume the position of lead coordinator for the project. On behalf of all the coordinators, both new and returning, we wish to thank those of you who participated in the September elections, and we look forward to working to advance the goals of the project for the next six months. With the elections concluded, there are two changes. First, Roger Davies has been appointed a coordinator emeritus, joining our first coordinator emeritus Kirill Lokshin. Secondly, for the first time ever, the lead coordinator for the Military history WikiProject will be taking a lengthy wikibreak. For those who were unaware of this, I am an undergraduate student, and will be taking a leave of absence, effective end September, to focus on graduating in December. However, with fourteen coordinators, and two coordinators emeritus, I am confident the needs of the project will be well taken care of. For the VIII coordinator tranche, TomStar81 (Talk) |

March, as you know, is an election month for our project, when we pick the coordinators for the next six months. We are seeking motivated individuals willing to devote some of their time and energy to the project so it continues to grow and prosper. Also, I am making a personal appeal to each of you, the members of this project, to come out and vote for the candidates that run. These users will be responsible for managing the assessment process, answering questions, and making sure that the project's other needs are met. We have approximately 1,000 users who identify as being a part of our project, yet on average only about one-tenth of that number participate in elections. Moreover, as we typically hold referendums on major issues affecting the project along with these election, those who do not vote miss the opportunity to give their opinion on matters affecting the project as a whole. Remember, one vote always makes a difference. For the coordinators, TomStar81 (Talk) 23:47, 6 February 2010 (UTC) |

Across Wikipedia, guidelines have been set up so that editors can vet sources for themselves. Links to some of these and a guide for checking if a source is reliable can be found in an excellent Signpost dispatch written by Ealdgyth (talk · contribs). However, for the majority of military history-related topics, we strive for more than just a basic reliable source. Specifically, we aim for peer-reviewed articles and books over, for example, most websites.[N 1] Contemporary news articles or accounts can and should be mixed in (if possible) to give a picture of the general view point of the time—were they calm, afraid, unsure of what was going on? Another major tenet is neutrality. If an editor rewrote the article Dieppe Raid using only the official Canadian history,[N 2] we would have a problem; while it does contain a thorough and in-depth overview, a point-of-view can still be read. For one, it gives an undue amount of focus to Canada's input in the planning of the landing, and it would probably give an undue focus to their troops if a majority of the landing forces hadn't been Canadian. Granted, this is a book written to document that country's role in the Second World War, so you would hope it focuses on them, but this same reason makes it unusable as the primary basis for an article. In this case, you would like to utilize a few recent, peer-reviewed books and journals, the official British, Canadian and German histories, possibly a few books written by historians from the aforementioned countries, and newspapers from that time period.[N 3] Obviously this is ideal, but you need to represent all three sides in this (the United States would be a fourth, but they played only a minor role in the planning and invading). This neutrality aspect applies especially for battles and to a lesser degree biographies, but it can be utilized in virtually every article in our scope. For example, it could be beneficial to obtain Japanese accounts of B-29 Superfortress bombing raids or non-Puerto Rican peer-reviewed sources for that insular area's role in the Second World War. —Ed (talk • majestic titan)

I am pleased to report that the March coordinator elections have concluded, and that 15 members have been selected to serve as coordinators from April to September. Special congratulations go to AustralianRupert, Dank, MisterBee1966, NativeForeigner, Patar knight, and Ranger Steve, all of whom are newly elected coordinators. As we start this new tranche we welcome all returning coordinators, and wish those who decided not to stand for reelection luck as they move on to new things. In other election news, a motion made to extend the coordinator tranche from its current six-month term to one full year gained consensus from the election participants. This will take effect in September, during the next election cycle. For the IX Coordinator Tranche, TomStar81 (Talk) 05:02, 27 March 2010 (UTC) |

I (Ed) am a college student in the United States, and as part of attaining my desired degree, I chose to take a course in Arab-Islamic history. We began in the early 600s and spent some time on the origins of the Islamic conquering of the Sassanid Empire and partial takeover of the Byzantine Empire (c. 634–750). From there, we have moved through the various ages of history, and the class recently began discussing the Ottoman Empire and other Islamic regions of more recent times. As we began discussing the Ottoman Empire's role in the First World War, our professor mentioned that they were blockading the Bosphorus, using it as a chokepoint to cut off needed supplies traveling to Russia's only warm-water port, Sevastopol. An astute classmate, realizing this meant the use of warships, wondered what naval technology was like during this time. The professor turned and asked me to answer the question, as he knew I had been studying naval history and believed that I knew more about the subject. The point of this anecdote is not to boast, but to provoke some thought. By virtue of the research Wikipedia writers must do to write complete, referenced articles, many of us are acquiring knowledge in specialized topics that can surpass even learned scholars. Wikipedia might even provoke some of us into becoming learned scholars through the subjects we find here. To profile one such case, take a look at Parsecboy. Beginning in May 2007, he came across a few essentially empty stubs on German battleship classes. Nearly 3 years later, he's written or collaborated on more than forty articles rated as good or higher, including over a dozen featured articles and a featured list; the majority relate to German warships. The work Parsecboy has done for Wikipedia has had a tremendous impact on his academic career: to complete his undergraduate degree, Parsecboy is currently writing an Honors Thesis that will analyze the British and German battlecruiser squadrons during the First World War. Parsecboy plans to attend graduate school and continue his research in the area, culminating in a dissertation. He comments that "without a doubt, I would not have had nearly as much knowledge and interest in the topic, nor would I have known where to begin researching if I had not become so involved with the topic here on Wikipedia." The knowledge you acquire through writing Wikipedia articles will remain with you for the rest of your life. Try to find a way to use it to your advantage. —Ed (talk • majestic titan) and Parsecboy (talk)

It's been a month since the end of the coordinator elections, and I am proud to inform the project that the IX coordinator tranche is doing well. Our new coordinators are rapidly learning the ropes, and the last of the task forces under consideration for merging have been consolidated into a new task force which should increase productivity and improve quality article output. At the moment the coordinators are discussing preliminary plans for an improved version of The Bugle, and are working with editors from the American Civil War task force who are in the process of organizing a new special project relating to that conflict. It is our hope to see these changes implemented in the upcoming month. Lastly, as many of our members are also in school, we extend our best wishes to all who will be taking final exams both this month and next. This month we're taking a look at the Military history WikiProject's special projects. At present we have three—Operation Great War Centennial, Operation Majestic Titan, and Operation Normandy—with, as Tom mentions in his introduction, a fourth coming on line as this newsletter goes out.
Special projects are a great way of organising a long-term collaboration with a specific end-point in mind, and tend to be more goal-oriented and focused than the general task forces or informal working groups. Joining a special project is also a fantastic way to work alongside like-minded editors with whom you'll undoubtedly develop close working relationships; by your third or fourth FA submission you'll hopefully be operating as part of a well-oiled team. Editor roles are many and varied: content writers, source material providers, image- and map-makers, copy editors, reviewers, MoS gurus, wikignomes, specialists and generalists... you're sure to find a job that suits you and benefits the team. If you have an idea for a special project or are already undertaking a collaboration that you think fits in with the ethos of those above, and you'd like to benefit from Milhist's support and infrastructure, consider dropping the coordinators a note. Personally I've found the synergy and teamwork of contributing to a special project (Operation Normandy in my case) to be one of the most rewarding and enjoyable aspects of my time here. I hope you will too. EyeSerenetalk 14:16, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

With Eurocopter's resignation (see editorial below), this month marks the end of his tenure as a project coordinator. Eurocopter has been with the team for almost three years now and will be sorely missed, but he has taken the tough decision that his real life commitments have unfortunately made it too hard for him to focus on his coordinator duties. We wish him good luck in the future, both in real life and on-wiki. Efforts to redesign The Bugle are moving forward and it is our intention to roll out a new format, based on the Signpost, for next month's issue. We hope that this will allow us to provide better coverage of the project's news by allowing more room to expand on the stories we bring to you. If you have any comments or suggestions on what we can do to improve coverage, please let us know. —your IX Coordinator Tranche, May 2010 |

For those of you who might not know me, I'm Eurocopter. I served as a coordinator of the Military history WikiProject from August 2007 until few days ago, when I decided to resign due to real life issues making it impossible for me to continue to perform project duties on a regular basis. Reflecting on my experience and activities within the project, I decided to write this editorial to set out a few thoughts and offer some advice to interested members. First of all, what does project coordination mean and how does it help the Military history WikiProject? Although the coordinators do not have any real executive powers, they play an important role in project management. To make editing contributions easier for our members we establish guidelines, manage Peer and A-Class reviews, and consult and assist when needed. The primary goal of the coordination team has always been to stimulate the development of quality articles and, once they have been developed, to facilitate maintaining them at a high standard for as long as possible. This has been carried out through the organization of a considerable number of assessment drives, contests and special projects. However, there is still much to be done to make the project one of the best and most active wiki-communities. Coordinator involvement in trying to achieve this, as the central promoters of any activity undertaken within the project, is more than important; the coordination team should stand as an example of civilised and constructive cooperation. Perhaps the most annoying issue—unfortunately quite widespread through the pages of Wikipedia—is POV-dominated conflict. While such a phenomenon might seem inevitable in a community within which hundreds of members of different nationalities with different historical and political views interact, it doesn’t mean we should accept it. The ability to neutrally mediate such conflicts is an important and desirable coordinator function. Secondly, but most importantly in my opinion, is the question of how the project enables editors to contribute effectively. Perhaps you already know how difficult it is to take an article to the highest quality levels such as A-Class or featured status. It is even harder to do this working alone. I believe the best thing the Military history WikiProject has done is to bring together groups of editors with similar interests. As there are very few editors skilled in all the diverse article development areas, you might feel the need for help from editors more experienced in, for example, advanced copy editing, image editing etc. To this end the project provides task forces and special projects where members should always feel encouraged to ask questions, discuss, debate and give advice. Such cooperation is the best way to create properly balanced articles and to establish a neutral point of view. Our Style guide and Academy are also useful in guiding you along the path of writing an article. A final, but vital, part of the collaborative article writing process is editor behaviour when interacting with other editors who are contributing to the same article. Even on those occasions where an editor upsets you or allows their personal opinions to influence their editing, always remain calm, civil and try to reach an agreement. Contributing to Wikipedia is something most of us do as a hobby; time spent in useless conflicts is precious editing time wasted. All in all, the Military history WikiProject is a good meeting point for milhist-interested editors, both beginners and advanced, with someone always there to give help and advice when needed. I wish to thank all my fellow coordinators and project members who keep this beautiful community running. I will certainly miss it! Best regards and happy wiki-editing! Orphaned non-free image File:Flight Corporal RCACS.png
Thanks for uploading File:Flight Corporal RCACS.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Request for Interview Regarding Wikipedia Bots
Greetings Dreamafter-
My name is Randall Livingstone, and I am a graduate student at the University of Oregon, currently collecting data for my dissertation on Wikipedia editors who create and use bots and assisted editing tools, as well as editors involved in the initial and/or ongoing creation of bot policies on Wikipedia. As a member of the bot community and former member of BAG, I would very much like to interview you for the project at a time and in a method that is most convenient for you (Gchat, another IM client, Skype, email, telephone, etc.). I am completely flexible and can work with your schedule. The interview will take approximately 30-45 minutes.
My dissertation project has been approved both by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the University of Oregon, and by the Research Committee at the Wikimedia Foundation. You can find more information on the project on my meta page.
Please let me know if you have any questions, and I look forward to hearing from you to set up a time to chat. Thank you very much.
