Aggressive edit summary and WP:OWNership at Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Hi Atsme, regarding this diff [1], you left the edit summary That material is not an improvement for this article which has passed serious scrutiny prior to advancing to GA. DISCUSS ON TALK PAGE and stop adding inappropriate information.
I believe you are confused; I did not add that information, and it isn't new to the article. Also, the status of the article as a GA does not preclude editing it. Although if it did, it would be more of a restriction on your removal of longstanding, sourced content for unclear reasons, and not a restriction on my restoring longstanding content. Geogene (talk) 14:15, 15 June 2023 (UTC)
- This diff [2] shows the content has been in the article with its current wording for at least four years, and the content is probably older than that. Let me reiterate the question from my edit you reverted:[3]. Is there a problem with the sourcing or not? Do you have science that says SBTs don't have "a reputation for pugnaciousness"? Geogene (talk) 14:29, 15 June 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, Geogene. I am not confused. You reverted me. As for your recent diff, nowhere in that version is the word "fatal". This is yet another example of your impulsive reverts of my edits. Being a GA precludes adding junk which applies to all articles. Perhaps if you would review the history of that GA, you would not be so confused about why that material does not belong. I truly don't have time to get into yet another argument with you about this same issue. As customary, you are mistaken about Staffordshire Bull Terrier, a GA that was highly scrutinized, and has withstood multiple attempts by pit bull haters/advocates to add unacceptable, poorly sourced material as what you just attempted to add back by reverting my edit. The material you added back and my edit summary are actually pretty simple...and stated matter-of-factly, not aggressively, but I cannot say the same about your allegations and comment above:
- It was not long standing material,
- It was neither helpful nor relative because it is based primarily on misinformation,
- It was not properly sourced per Exceptional claims require exceptional sources, and even if it was, it does not belong in that article anymore than similar cases belong in every dog article,
- The belief is born of antiquated thinking resulting from years of media hype and inaccurate/incomplete reporting based primarily on visual IDs and misidentifications - a known, established fact.
- Your revert of the problematic material I removed was added by an IP advocate who keeps trying to include the same material. That material has been removed from the article more than once. Your revert was disruptive.
- Tryptofish, myself and several other editors have been over similar arguments with you on more than one occasion. You continue the disruptive editing.
- WP:NOTADVOCACY and WP:CIR are important, especially when reviewing patterns of editing in some of the same dog articles that you have targeted to be pit bull related. It really has to stop.
- It will not be difficult to provide the necessary evidence to disprove your claims considering the CDC, and most recently the NAIC] have backed away from the faulty dog breed IDs and antiquated beliefs about the term pit bull that dates back to a 200 year old history of mixed breed dogs that fought rats in pits. We are also seeing a decline in BSL as a result.
- The context of our modern purebred dog articles does not support inclusion of material fitting the description of WP:NOT, including fear mongering, and BSL advocacies.
- Please use the article TP for these discussions. My TP is my happy place, and where I discuss important things about the project. Atsme 💬 📧 16:10, 15 June 2023 (UTC)
- I was hoping that some compromise could be reached, but unfortunately, none of this lengthy post addresses the concerns that I raised about your editing. I feel that continue to be issues in this subject area that only dispute resolution (of conduct, not content) can resolve. Geogene (talk) 16:14, 15 June 2023 (UTC)

- I think it's very clear where I have stood during these disputes. I also have an awful lot of other wiki-headaches with which I'm dealing right now. I was there when an IP, not Geogene, added that material, along with some other stuff. I reviewed all of it at the time. There was a significant amount that I reverted as being improper, and some that I revised without completely reverting. The material that Atsme wants to remove is material that I regard as OK. It's a sourced fact that there is such a "reputation". Therefore, I believe that Geogene's restoration of the material should stay as it is. Play nice, everyone. --Tryptofish (talk) 18:16, 15 June 2023 (UTC)
- The fatal human attack material was not there. The IP added it later. Materialscientist removed it on April 5th 2023, the IP edit warred it back in, then on the same day Lectonar PP the article, and now it's Geogene edit warring it back in. I restored the portion that should be there, and removed the rest that does not belong in the article. Atsme 💬 📧 20:30, 15 June 2023 (UTC)
- I consider myself uninvolved, as I only implemented pending-changes protection after a request at RfP. Also, I have no dog in this fight, so: my take is that some (serious) discussion is needed. Article-talk is a good starting point, but a third opinion might be helpful here, to get more eyes on this. Lectonar (talk) 07:20, 16 June 2023 (UTC)

- Bottomline - there is no denying that dogs described as "pit bulls" have been involved in fatalities and dog bites - we have lists for that, although I disagree with having them because of the various issues, but "described as" doesn't make the term pit bull apply to one of the purebred conformation show dogs/utility dogs/weight-pull dogs, etc. such as the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Bull Terrier (or its Miniature), American Pit Bull Terrier, American Bulldog, or Boston Terrier.
- The following important facts are being ignored:
- "pit bull" is not a breed, it is indeterminate terminology,
- ALL DOGS are capable of biting. In this particular dog bite report, 40% were purebred, 32% were mixed breeds, and 27.7% were “pit bull” types/“pit bull” crosses. Staffordshire Bull Terriers are purebreds. When describing/reporting a purebred, protocol is to use uppercase. If uppercase is not used, and the dog is referred to as a pit bull, then it is likely not a purebred dog with a pedigree that can be officially identified with its respective dog breed registry.
- A dog's breed is a poor predictor of behavior, and investigators failed to find behaviors that were exclusive to any one breed. (per AAAS)
- Observer reports (sight identification) are unreliable as verifiable in multiple studies too numerous to mention.
- Temperament tests such as this one, and this most recent, wide-spread study in Nature, and the AVMA confirm there is no scientific evidence that one breed of dog is more likely than any other to harm a human. The ASPCA states: ...while a dog’s genetics may predispose it to perform certain behaviors, tremendous behavioral variation exists among individuals of the same breed or breed type.
- Temperament tests have brought unexpected results for the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Bull Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, and AmStaff demonstrating those purebreds rank in the top 23% of the 130 breeds tested, averaging 87.9%. The AKC tests a dog's reaction or behavior to elements that are presented to them, such as strangers who may approach the dog and present themselves as neutral and friendly, or threatening and aggressive.
- Statistical results do not support the fear mongering or media hype.
Real science and dog experts speak volumes, so no, I don't understand why WP is allowing misinformation to remain in our articles, knowing full well police reports with observer accounts are incomplete, and that some of the studies are based on that anecdotal reporting, none of which is verified or verifiable. I intend to move this material from my UTP to the WikiProject Dogs. Atsme 💬 📧 23:57, 17 June 2023 (UTC)

Bilateral knee replacement. Healing well, but I must admit that keeping up with these range of motion exercises can be quite taxing. PT is not a simple walk in the park; it's quite serious, as it should be, and I have barely gotten into the nitty-gritty workouts that begin next week. I have good days and bad days; fortunately, I have more good days. I have a good frame of mind, and decided that it's just not worth the risk of being exposed to the less-than-fun moments on WP because it often feels more like I'm being forced to accept compromise for the sake of compromise than for the sake of our readers and getting the article right. As my island family repeatedly reminds me when things go south...tin hopi buriku...pasenshi, Betty, pasenshi. And with that in mind, I wish everyone a good night. Atsme 💬 📧 01:54, 16 July 2023 (UTC)

New pages patrol newsletter
Hello Atsme,
Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!
October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.
PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.
Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.
Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.
Reminders:
- You can access live chat with patrollers on the New Page Patrol Discord.
- Consider adding the project discussion page to your watchlist.
- To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

Your membership of the WP:VRT
Dear Atsme, it has occurred to me that your control of a competing wiki, Justapedia, one which is also very critical of us, is in conflict with your membership of the VRT which gives you access to confidential information including complaints about Wikipedia. It is for this reason that I'm asking you to resign from the VRT. Thanks. Doug Weller talk 10:10, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, Doug - to your point: JP is not critical of the WMF, rather JP's criticism aligns with WP's own somewhat guarded self-criticism, as well as public criticism and controversies that date back a long way, and most recent criticism of WP by academia and various others, all of which are easily found using Google search. Regardless, VRT is a Wikimedia project, and Justapedia supports the WMF and its sister projects. I have seen more criticism of the WMF coming from some WP editors/admins than what can be said of Justapedia's criticism, all of which is reliably sourced. I see no reason at this point in time to resign from my volunteer position on the VRT, unless of course there is a WMF policy that supports your request. Heads up
Heads up, there will be at least a short mention of Quilette's article on Justapedia in the upcoming issue of The Signpost. Possibly more on the AN dispute. Do you want to be kept apprised? ☆ Bri (talk) 17:12, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
- Sure - The Quillette article was not written by me and after finally getting around to reading it, it was more about Wikipedia, which I found a bit disappointing. I was not at all prepared for what's happening now, but since Justapedia is mentioned, I would like to be kept apprised. Atsme 💬 📧 21:00, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
- There is just a placeholder at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/News and notes#Brief notes for now. I'm probably not going to be expanding it, will wait for another editor to do so. ☆ Bri (talk) 20:17, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
Impersonator on Justapedia
It has been brought to my attention that someone has registered under the username "BD2412" on Justapedia, and has made some confrontational edits. This is not me, and I think that this is rather obviously not a coincidence. I recognize that Justapedia is its own project, and can allow whatever usernames it wishes, but I would like to request that this person be blocked for impersonation. - Absolutely. I agree 100%. Atsme 💬 📧 00:30, 18 December 2023 (UTC)

An idea
If I were going to make a Wikipedia fork, what I'd do is set up a webserver with its default behavior to mirror en.wp articles from their respective titles in realtime (maybe even with an iframe or something). That is, if you go to https://forkapedia.org/wiki/Otto_L._Nelson_Jr.
the server would note that there was no such page on Forkapedia and instead serve parsed HTML from http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Otto_L._Nelson_Jr.
.
Then, in the instance that articles were actually being edited on the forked side to differ from the enwiki version, the server would simply note that a local version existed, and serve that instead (i.e. if someone on Forkapedia wrote that Otto Nelson "was an officer in the United States Army and a corporate executive", then that would be a change, and it'd present that).
I think this would resolve a number of issues, i.e. you wouldn't have to spend tons of server resources on storing local copies of Wikipedia articles, you wouldn't have to spend a ton of time manually importing wikitext, and you also wouldn't have to worry about articles going out of date. jp×g🗯️ 02:42, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- This isn't a good idea. See Wikipedia:Mirrors and forks#Remote loading. Galobtter (talk) 03:17, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- Well, you wouldn't have to hit Wikipedia every single time a page was loaded, you could cache it. On meta:Live_mirrors there's a recommendation for how to do that:
We just politely ask for them to host a local copy using compliant caching HTTP proxies, with a reasonable storage cache size for their traffic (they can have it auto-update once a day or the like to keep it current, they should honor the cache time indicated, and can use conditional or HEAD requests to test if their cached version is up-to-date; this will also greatly improve the performance of their site)
. jp×g🗯️ 03:49, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

- Hi, Valjean! Thank you for the kudos, but I am uncertain as to which Signpost article you're referring to:
- Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2018-02-05/Op-ed
- Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2020-05-31/Op-Ed <-- assuming it's this one which was linked in the section "Forked again"?

Hillstream loach
Hillstream loach (Balitoridae) needs an image. I found these but am unsure which is best. This is right up your alley! -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 22:50, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

- Valjean, Tryp is our go-to Aquaman when it comes to aquarium fish. What I think would look cool is a montage kinda like File:Loaches.jpg showing some of the different species rather than just a single image. Atsme 💬 📧 03:15, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

- Tryp - are we safe using File:Loaches.jpg for that article's info box? Atsme 💬 📧 18:20, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
- (Thanks for comparing me to a DC Comics superhero!) But no, not if you mean the infobox for Hillstream loach. The top left image in that composite is a clown loach, which is a loach, but not in the Balitoridae. I see the edit has already been made, so I'll revert it and correct it. --Tryptofish (talk) 21:45, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

Let me know what species would fit in something similar and I'll create it. Atsme 💬 📧 01:03, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
- It looks to me like we have a good number of images at Commons: [7]. It would be a time-consuming task that I personally just don't have the time for, for the near future, but it would come down to going through all the subcategories of that Commons category page, and picking out a nice assortment. As long as you stay in the family Balitoridae, you'll be OK. --Tryptofish (talk) 18:28, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

Edelman Family Foundation
Hello @Atsme
I am reaching out to you because of your previous participation in one of the discussions regarding the reliability and neutrality of HuffPost/Pink News/ProPublica as sources used on Wikipedia.
Currently, there is an ongoing issue with the Edelman Family Foundation section in the Joseph Edelman Wikipedia article. The section appears to be biased and lacks a balanced representation of the foundation's activities, as it primarily focuses on a single controversial donation while neglecting to mention the organization's numerous other significant contributions to various causes.
I would like to invite you to participate in the discussion on the BLP Noticeboard to address the concerns surrounding the section's neutrality and explore ways to improve its content. Llama Tierna (talk) 18:07, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
