Electrolytic corrosion
[edit]The edit history says you opened a copyvio revdel request. But why? The text in question (which had already been reverted anyway) was 100% written by me, with sources provided. (Surely using the “quote” function in the graphical editor’s citation form does not constitute a copyvio?) And the comparison tool shows 0.0% similarity to the two sources. So I’m confused as to why the revdel was opened. Cheers, — tooki (talk) 20:35, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Tooki 4 Sentences of the text you added, are a exact copy of sentences written here in 2018. Nobody (talk) 06:07, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
- Your copyvio request is highly problematic for two distinct reasons:
- 1. What a copyvio is and is not
- My understanding of Wikipedia copyright policy is that violations deal with content included in an article’s content: the text, images, etc. It does not, however, extend to the bibliographic information used to document the sources used (citing). The “quote” parameter of a cite template (which does not cause the text to become part of the article text) is essentially bibliographic metadata.
- Thus, “text you added” does NOT include the text within a source’s quote parameter . Every word of article text I added was written by me, and bears no resemblance to the forum thread you link to.
- Are you, in all seriousness, claiming a copyvio due to the wording of text which is in a quote parameter, and thus expressly being marked as being not my own?!? If so, that seems to me to suggest a misunderstanding of what a copyvio is. The “quote” parameter of a citation exists precisely to make clear what passage of the source text one is referring to, while not including it in the article text as such.
- Note also that your copyvio request was in fact rejected because the admin correctly identified no violation.
- 2. Who plagiarized whom
- Now, if the source itself committed plagiarism, one could reasonably argue that the source is bad and needs replacing, but this does not mean the wiki editor who cited the source committed a copyright violation.
- However, if you google some of what I assume are the offending sentences, for example “Electrolytic corrosion is often confused with galvanic corrosion. While galvanic corrosion is driven by the difference in corrosion potential between two metals, the electrolytic corrosion is driven by the external sources of EMF.”, you will find that my source is actually the origin, and that other sites copied it. I found a properly-sourced mention of that sentence in a
2007 forum post2016 forum postcorrected, attributing it to the same corrosiopedia page I cited. This dates the sentence to well before 2018, strongly suggesting the fishing forum plagiarized corrosiopedia. - So in this case, the source I provided is actually the correct one.
- It’s good to remember that if you find a passage of text copied across the web, the website you are looking at may not have committed plagiarism, but in fact could be the victim of it. Consequently, one should be careful before making claims of plagiarism (“exact copy of”).
- P.S. Finally, given the sheer length of the fishing forum page you (mistakenly) believed to be the source of the text, it would have been courteous of you specify what the offending text is when asked, rather than the terse “4 sentences of the text you added”. Similarly, you should have addressed my specific question about the “quote” parameter rather than ignore it. — tooki (talk) 00:06, 11 January 2025 (UTC)
- Hi Tooki, I've taken a closer look a your source and it looks like you're right. It isn't a copyright violation in the way I thought, since the source isn't the forum I found, but the one you added. And to address your P.S. message: The part mentioned on the forum page can easily be seem when opening the CopyPatrol report or the Copyvios detector, both of them were linked in the RevDel request. Nobody (talk) 07:28, 11 January 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply. I’ll take a look at the tools again. Regards, — tooki (talk) 12:27, 11 January 2025 (UTC)
- @1AmNobody24 I just noticed that I actually misread the date of the forum post that dates the corrosionpedia article as coming before the forum post; luckily, the outcome is still the same, as the correct date is still earlier. I’ve noted the error above. — tooki (talk) 15:14, 18 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Tooki replying following your request on my talk page. Technically reproducing any text is a copyvio unless the source is either:
- explicitly released into the public domain,
- out of copyright through age, or
- fair use is claimed. (Wikipedia:Copyright problems#What text can be reused?)
- Failure to attribute constitutes plagiarism.
- As the relevant text was all sourced it's not plagiarism although it could still be a copyvio, albeit an innocent one if the attributed source was itself violating a copyright.
- The fair use point is the one where the quote parameter in citation templates gets abused with editors thinking it gives them carte blanche to reproduce copious amounts of copyrighted material without consideration to whether the quantity of material used falls within fair use. Sticking it in an attributed quote which only appears in the footnotes does not get around the fair use policy, and I disagree that it's bibliographic metadata except where a quote is needed to pinpoint the material in the source and where other citation template parameters e.g. page or location fail to achieve this. Arguably, almost any quote can be rewritten (Wikipedia:Use our own words) but I think most editors would struggle to come up with a more succinct definition of the differences between EC and GC than the quote, so in my opinion this is a valid fair use of the material as it uses the minimal copyrighted material to make its point. Nthep (talk) 09:01, 11 January 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for taking the time to reply.
- Well, in all fairness, I did write a succinct definition in my own words. Others decided they preferred the redirect over a separate page, so it’s not used anymore. The quote parameter texts were just to identify the relevant passages in the sources.
- A “rewritten” quote is no longer a quote (it’s a paraphrasing), and while that is exactly what we want for the article text, it could not not serve the purpose of identifying a source text passage. And indeed, calling a rewritten text a “quote” would constitute a serious misattribution error (especially if the rewrite introduces errors, etc), since that suggests the author cited wrote a text they did not write.
- Is there any established guidance with respect to the amount of text quoted in the quote parameter? I haven’t found anything beyond the brief text at WP:FQ.
- Thanks again and regards, — tooki (talk) 12:26, 11 January 2025 (UTC)
- I'm not aware of any guidance over the amount of quoted text, WP:NFCC just says "brief". Every use has to be looked at in context of how it's being used in an article. If definitions get applied then wikilawyering kicks in, in disputes, over how much text was used. Nthep (talk) 13:34, 11 January 2025 (UTC)

Our tool is an AI-powered mind mapping application. I need to know how to create a Wikipedia page correctly. Can you guide me on this? --Laru ADM (talk) 11:04, 10 February 2025 (UTC)
- Hi Laru, in order to get a article the company need to mee the Notability guidelines (WP:GNG or WP:NCORP). This needs to be demonstrated with references that are considered significant coverage, secondary and reliable. Press releases aren't secondary and therefore aren't enough for an article. Weekly highlight
- The Product and Technology Advisory Council (PTAC) has published a draft of their recommendations for the Wikimedia Foundation's Product and Technology department. They have recommended focusing on mobile experiences, particularly contributions. They request community feedback at the talk page by 21 February.
Updates for editors
- The "Special pages" portlet link will be moved from the "Toolbox" into the "Navigation" section of the main menu's sidebar by default. This change is because the Toolbox is intended for tools relating to the current page, not tools relating to the site, so the link will be more logically and consistently located. To modify this behavior and update CSS styling, administrators can follow the instructions at T385346. [1]
- As part of this year's work around improving the ways readers discover content on the wikis, the Web team will be running an experiment with a small number of readers that displays some suggestions for related or interesting articles within the search bar. Please check out the project page for more information.
Template editors who use TemplateStyles can now customize output for users with specific accessibility needs by using accessibility related media queries (
prefers-reduced-motion
,prefers-reduced-transparency
,prefers-contrast
, andforced-colors
). Thanks to user Bawolff for these improvements. [2]View all 22 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, the global blocks log will now be shown directly on the Special:CentralAuth page, similarly to global locks, to simplify the workflows for stewards. [3]
Updates for technical contributors
- Wikidata now supports a special language as a "default for all languages" for labels and aliases. This is to avoid excessive duplication of the same information across many languages. If your Wikidata queries use labels, you may need to update them as some existing labels are getting removed. [4]
- The function
getDescription
was invoked on every Wiki page read and accounts for ~2.5% of a page's total load time. The calculated value will now be cached, reducing load on Wikimedia servers. [5] - As part of the RESTBase deprecation effort, the
/page/related
endpoint has been blocked as of February 6, 2025, and will be removed soon. This timeline was chosen to align with the deprecation schedules for older Android and iOS versions. The stable alternative is the "morelike
" action API in MediaWiki, and a migration example is available. The MediaWiki Interfaces team can be contacted for any questions. [6]
In depth
- The latest quarterly Language and Internationalization newsletter is available. It includes: Updates about the "Contribute" menu; details on some of the newest language editions of Wikipedia; details on new languages supported by the MediaWiki interface; updates on the Community-defined lists feature; and more.
- The latest Chart Project newsletter is available. It includes updates on the progress towards bringing better visibility into global charts usage and support for categorizing pages in the Data namespace on Commons.

Updates for editors

- Starting next week, talk pages at these wikis – Spanish Wikipedia, French Wikipedia, Italian Wikipedia, Japanese Wikipedia – will get a new design. This change was extensively tested as a Beta feature and is the last step of talk pages improvements. [7]
- You can now navigate to view a redirect page directly from its action pages, such as the history page. Previously, you were forced to first go to the redirect target. This change should help editors who work with redirects a lot. Thanks to user stjn for this improvement. [8]
- When a Cite reference is reused many times, wikis currently show either numbers like "1.23" or localized alphabetic markers like "a b c" in the reference list. Previously, if there were so many reuses that the alphabetic markers were all used, an error message was displayed. As part of the work to modernize Cite customization, these errors will no longer be shown and instead the backlinks will fall back to showing numeric markers like "1.23" once the alphabetic markers are all used.
- The log entries for each change to an editor's user-groups are now clearer by specifying exactly what has changed, instead of the plain before and after listings. Translators can help to update the localized versions. Thanks to user Msz2001 for these improvements.
- A new filter has been added to the Special:Nuke tool, which allows administrators to mass delete pages, to enable users to filter for pages in a range of page sizes (in bytes). This allows, for example, deleting pages only of a certain size or below. [9]
- Non-administrators can now check which pages are able to be deleted using the Special:Nuke tool. Thanks to user MolecularPilot for this and the previous improvements. [10]
View all 25 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, a bug was fixed in the configuration for the AV1 video file format, which enables these files to play again. [11]
Updates for technical contributors
- Parsoid Read Views is going to be rolling out to most Wiktionaries over the next few weeks, following the successful transition of Wikivoyage to Parsoid Read Views last year. For more information, see the Parsoid/Parser Unification project page. [12][13]
- Developers of tools that run on-wiki should note that
mw.Uri
is deprecated. Tools requiringmw.Uri
must explicitly declaremediawiki.Uri
as a ResourceLoader dependency, and should migrate to the browser nativeURL
API soon. [14]
