Pronunciation
[edit]This page should tell how her name is pronounced. Classical DJ's pronounce it something like "Sure-Fay Yang," which is counterintuitive. There are subtleties in the Pinyin system that baffle English-speaking "barbarians." —Preceding unsigned comment added by Donfbreed (talk • contribs) 08:55, 6 January 2010
- I've yet to hear a radio presenter pronounce it quite right! I don't know what to suggest. There is a page Wikipedia:IPA for Mandarin, but I really don't understand IPA so perhaps someone more familiar with it can have a go at adding it to the article. The best solution would be for a native speaker to record the correct pronunciation. JRawle (Talk) 12:41, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
Proposed move to Xuefei Yang
[edit]I think this page should be at Xuefei Yang rather than Yang Xuefei. Her own website is www.xuefeiyang.com, she's known as Xuefei Yang on her EMI Classics biography page, she's billed as Xuefei Yang when she performs, she's introduced as Xuefei Yang on the radio, and she's based in the UK. She is universally known as Xuefei Yang in the English-speaking world.
A little history: In November 2006, I moved the page to Xuefei Yang with the edit summary "moved Yang Xuefei to Xuefei Yang: Is almost universally known given-name-first in English-speaking world". However, in June 2009, Marc87 moved the page to its current location with no edit summary and no discussion.
I should really just move the page back to Xuefei Yang, but thought I'd let people have a say first. If we can't decide on a solution (or there isn't enough traffic to this talk page) I'll list it as an official requested move. JRawle (Talk) 12:25, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
Update
[edit]Despite outlining my reasons for the move here, and leaving a message on Marc87's talk page, he chose to return here and make more changes to the naming of the article without outlining his reasons or even replying to my messages out of courtesy. Therefore I'm going to make a formal move request. JRawle (Talk) 13:18, 9 January 2010 (UTC)
Requested move
[edit]- The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: Moved. ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 13:46, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
Yang Xuefei → Xuefei Yang — The article was originally at Xuefei Yang for many years, until it was moved without discussion (or edit summary) by Marc87 in June. I have invited him to explain, but he has declined to do so. The subject's own website is http://www.xuefeiyang.com, she's based in the UK, she's known as Xuefei Yang on her EMI Classics biography page, she's billed as Xuefei Yang when she performs, she's always introduced as Xuefei Yang on the radio. She is universally known as Xuefei Yang in the English-speaking world. No-one would type in "Yang Xuefei" to find the article. I feel the page should be moved back to where it was and that Marc87's refusal to discuss his move rather discredits him - instead of discussing it, my message simply prompted him to make further changes to the article to conform to his view, again without discussion. JRawle (Talk) 13:27, 9 January 2010 (UTC)
- Support with a quote from WP:NC-CHINA: There is an exception for people whose Chinese name is familiar but with English ordering (for example, Wen Ho Lee). In this case, the primary entry should be under the English ordering with a redirect from the Chinese ordering. JRawle (Talk) 13:40, 9 January 2010 (UTC)
- Support Per JRawle. The website is certainly in forename > surname order, and so long as the redirect from Yang Xuefei is in place everyone should get to where they want to be. Someoneanother 22:35, 9 January 2010 (UTC)
- Support Proposer explains it all. Ucucha 13:21, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
- The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
