This article needs to decide ....

[edit]

Whether it is about rugby football or rugby league. If it is the former, then the history of rugby union in the state needs to be included. If it is the latter, then it cannot use rugby football to push an agenda and mislead readers as to a greater history, at least not in the opening paragraph. --Rulesfan (talk) 04:34, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The view that rugby league fans and Wikipedia takes is that "rugby football" is ancestral to both rugby union and rugby league; hence it is worth a brief reference that rugby was already played in Victoria before the introduction of rugby league. I take your point about the opening paragraph though.
The original writer seems to have been poorly informed rather than biased in favour of league. For instance I deleted a reference to a tour by the British Lions since it was the union side that toured Victoria in the twenties not the rugby league side of the same name; they in fact played rules football against local sides and not rugby (of either code).GordyB (talk) 15:11, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Edit having checked the record, I was wrong about the tour in the 20s, the union tour was in the late 19th century, this was a league tour.GordyB (talk) 16:32, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Naming

[edit]

The article should not be called "rugby football" as it is only about rugby league; content about rugby union should be in a separate article (Rugby union in Victoria). Rugby football is ancestral to rugby league and that is why the article refers to it. This follows the convention established in very many articles e.g. Rugby union in Wales refers to cnapan, Rugby union in Italy refers to harpastum, Rugby union in Ireland refers to caid and Rugby union in South Africa refers to Winchester football even though those sports are not ancestral to rugby union. Rugby union in England refers to football, I could go on...GordyB (talk) 10:04, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rulesfan is obviously an aussie rules football fan who hates league (hence his name and the fact he only wants to add negative details to this article). As a Melburnian myself, most people here refer to RL as simply rugby. Agreed, it is not rugby. You may need to explain to people like rulesfan that while they refer to it like this, it is not the correct way. Rugby union in Victoria is practically the same as Victorian rugby union. Before this page was created people used to redirect Rugby league in Victoria to Victorian rugby league. Obviously someone realised it was not significant enough so they created this. For the most part it was small info (despite people begging wikiproject rugby league to contribute) until people like you came along and added more.60.224.3.8 (talk) 23:13, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Too storm orientated

[edit]

I want this article less-Melbourne Storm orientated. Sure they are the main drive for the competition here, but they are not the only reason rugby league is here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.224.3.8 (talk) 23:11, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion

[edit]

We have since failed to put an adequate photo in the profile pic. I would suggest someone taking a photo at a VRL game or a junior game of RL somewhere in Melbourne.60.224.3.243 (talk) 21:22, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unsourced text

[edit]

Can we leave the unsourced information out? If the information is important, it can be added back with sources that support the text. This is very important because otherwise, there is a very real concern about original research and synthesis material appearing in the article that violates neutral point of view. Having it fully sourced will also make the article more useful for people writing daughter articles, and assist in preventing future drama. --LauraHale (talk) 14:32, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
