120.147.66.45 (talk) 07:51, 17 July 2016 (UTC) Paul Labile Pogba (born 15 March 1993) is a French professional footballer who plays for English club Manchester United and the France national team. He operates primarily as a central midfielder and is comfortable at playing both in attack and defence.[3][reply]

Pogba was described by his former club Manchester United as a "powerful, skilful, and creative" player who has "an eye for goal and a penchant for the spectacular."[4] In Italy, he gained the nicknames Il Polpo Paul ("Paul the Octopus") for his long legs that look like tentacles during tackling or running[5] and "Pogboom" for his explosive style and energy on the pitch.[6] These characteristics have led him to be compared with former France international Patrick Vieira.[7] Since joining Juventus in 2012, he has helped the club to four consecutive Serie A titles, as well as a Coppa Italia, and two Supercoppa Italiana titles. He received the Golden Boy award in 2013, given to the best under-21 player in Europe, followed by the Bravo Award in 2014, awarded to the best under-23 player who has participated in European competitions.[8]

Pogba played internationally for France with the national youth football team, representing his nation at all levels for which he was eligible. With the under-16 team, he captained his nation to victories at the Aegean Cup and the Tournoi du Val-de-Marne and, at under-17 level, played at the 2010 UEFA European Under-17 Football Championship. At under-20 level, he captained his nation to victory at the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup and took home the Best Player award for his performances during the tournament. He made his debut for the senior French national team on 22 March 2013 in a 3–1 win against Georgia, and scored his first World Cup goal on 30 June 2014 against Nigeria; he was awarded the Best Young Player Award for his performances at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, after reaching the quarter-final.[9] He later represented his nation at UEFA Euro 2016 on home soil, where he scored one goal as his team reached the final.

In January 2014, Pogba was named by The Guardian as one of the ten most promising young players in Europe.[10] In January 2016, Pogba was named to the 2015 UEFA Team of the Year[11] as well as the 2015 FIFA FIFPro World XI, after helping Juventus to the 2015 UEFA Champions League Final.[12]

To be fair, it is pretty long. I don't know if it's necessary to mention, for example, his time as captain of France U16 or even the specific youth awards he won. In many ways, recent events have meant the lead section is a bit of a mish-mash of facts that could probably do with a rewrite. – PeeJay 11:01, 10 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I wanted some additional personal information on Paul Pogba added into the EARLY LIFE section.

Paul Labile Pogba is a devout Muslim and inherited the faith from his mother who is also a devout Muslim. He was taught Islamic beliefs and mannerism from a young age growing up in France. Checking against the GA criteria

[edit]
GA review (see here for what the criteria are, and here for what they are not)
  1. It is reasonably well written.
a (prose, no copyvios, spelling and grammar): b (MoS for lead, layout, word choice, fiction, and lists):
Usually citations are discouraged from the lead per WP:LEADCITE unless it's citing controversial information. However given the length of the article, I think this should be fine
" while Mathias plays for Dutch side Sparta Rotterdam and the Guinean national team" - why not 'club'?
"On 6 June 2015, Pogba started for Juventus in the 2015 UEFA Champions League Final as the club were defeated 3–1 by Barcelona at Berlin's Olympiastadion" - merge this with a paragraph
"Pogba finished the under-16 campaign with 17 appearances and one goal." - needs a citation
  2. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
a (reference section): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR):
    No original research found.
  3. It is broad in its coverage.
    a (major aspects): b (focused):
  4. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
    Fair representation without bias:
  5. It is stable.
    No edit wars, etc.:
  6. It is illustrated by images and other media, where possible and appropriate.
a (images are tagged and non-free content have fair use rationales): b (appropriate use with suitable captions):
  7. Overall:
    Pass/Fail:

Ref 13, ref 48, ref 103 and ref 104 are all dead. If these can be archived or deleted if they're not valuable then this article should pass. The article mentions that Paul is a "devout muslim". While he is from a muslim family there is no evidence (to the best of my knowledge, and I know him pretty well) that Paul is religious, much less that he is "devout". That seem to be a widespread rumor which I don't know the origin of. I just noticed that no one ever source that claim or sometimes the references are circular (refer back to this article). All the sources listed in the footnotes are irrelevant or don't mention Pogba specifically at all.

I can tell you that a lot of people are "muslim" by birth but don't practice at all or have had a religious education; just like a lot of catholics have never went to church. 45.62.219.153 (talk) 13:26, 16 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The so-called fluctuations in form (under the Manchester United header) are based on biased pundits and news articles (e.g. Sky Sports and Jamie Carragher). There is no basis in fact to stipulate that Paul Pogba's form fluctuated, without referencing the manager, Jose Mourinho, whose own tactics and attitude significantly contributed to a perceived fluctuation in form. Likewise, fluctuation in form represents several months of poor form over the course of several games. The so-called fluctuations were not for that length of time and for that number of games to actually make such a claim. Yooo9090 (talk) 07:02, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Adidas Soapbox

[edit]

pinging active editors, @Mattythewhite: and @Flix11:

> Pogba has a sponsorship deal with sportswear and equipment supplier Adidas. He wears Adidas Predator football boots which he has promoted in commercials.

Isn't this WP:SOAPBOX? I intend to remove this but I've seen such Adidas links in other pages too (Gareth Bale's page, as one example). Looks like, either there's consensus on such content being encyclopedic or a wikipedia-wide promotion by Adidas was / is in full-swing? Murtaza.aliakbar (talk) 06:17, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think this is soapboxy. Pogba's involvement in advertising campaigns pertains to his marketing appeal, which is an encyclopaedically relevant part of his life. – PeeJay 16:31, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ad campaigns are encyclopedic part of an athlete's life? I can see how that could be the case. Are there existing guidelines or policies that confirm this? Thanks. Murtaza.aliakbar (talk) 17:42, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't say ad campaigns are encyclopaedic, I said that an athlete's involvement in them was. The fact that Pogba is selected ahead of the hundreds of others that Adidas sponsor speaks to his brand, which is definitely something the article should cover. – PeeJay 18:19, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Erm? I am saying the same thing. You may be right, of course, but I personally don't think an athlete's involvement in ad campaigns is encyclopedic to warrant an entire section on their pages. To me, it looks like Adidas is being shoe-horned into a lot of articles on Wikipedia and is getting undue (wp:due) prominence. How can one report wp:soapbox content, would you know? Murtaza.aliakbar (talk) 18:54, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You could raise it at WT:SOAPBOX, or on WT:FOOTY if you want the football project's opinions. I don't think this is just happening with Adidas, though, and even then I don't think it's excessive. Don't you think the paragraph about his appearance(s) in the FIFA games is similar? If you're just targeting Adidas, that might be a little suspect. – PeeJay 19:32, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, wt:soapbox is a dead-link, though? heh, I like how you casually turn it around on me being the one that's editing suspiciously. I like the way you think, but sorry to burst your bubble. For one, I can confirm I'm not an editor who takes payments (not that anyone wants to pay me anyway), and for two, I'd rather use an anonymous / pseudonymous account (rather than one that has my full name which is Google-able no less) and do such edits covertly.
As for what I think about EA Games, yes, it seems like out of place to me, too. For example, how out of place would it be to mention in the Liverpool FC wikipage that Pro Evolution Soccer aliases them Merseyside Reds instead due to trademark / copyright reasons? Sure, it is verifiable truth that could be cited from neutral reliable sources, but in my eyes, it seems completely out of place, undue, and promo material. Paul Pogba, is the son of DR Congo mother Yeo Moriba and Guinean father Fassou Antoine, who migrated from Guinea to France. Therefore someone needs to change it on Wiki so that it's right. Pogbas mum is Congolese that's my point hence why this needs changing. Even if you do research you'll see many articles like lifeblogger, transfermarkt and many Twitter ones say it too. Chipchapperz (talk) 07:48, 16 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Theres more btw. Chopchop48939200 (talk) 20:21, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've managed to send you a lot of examples that all say that his mum is from DR Congo or at least of DR Congo Origin. I doubt this much websites are lying especially highly certified ones like Transfermarkt and LifeBlogger that both say it too. It wouldn't let me send the hppts bit so stick that infront of those links and you'll see the websites and them all saying saying that Pogbas mum is Congolese. Paul pogba has openly said that he often looks upto the playstyle of Kevin De Bruyne and says one day he 'could assist like him' 37.210.151.214 (talk) 11:01, 11 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Section: Personal life

Correct his name on this line: 'In March 2022, Pogo said that he had suffered from depression whilst being managed by Jose Mourinho at Manchester United during 2018.[222]'

Pogba should replace Pogo. Robege (talk) 23:43, 23 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Delete the part of him being a muslim

[edit]

Is it so important to write that he is a muslim? You don't see that people on wikipedia being christian, jews or other religion is having it written on their page. 188.113.95.213 (talk) 09:26, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There's multiple dedicated reliable sources about Pogba and how his faith affects his football e.g. [1]. Also, if reliable sources cover it in depth, we do post people's other religions e.g. Jermaine Defoe is listed as Roman Catholic (Christian). Joseph2302 (talk) 12:04, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So tell me if writing that he is a muslim is so important, why does it says so only in the wikipedia in english? 188.113.95.213 (talk) 13:05, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So where is your source telling that he is a muslim and put the link of evidence in. 188.113.95.213 (talk) 20:11, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If it is sooo important to write that he is a muslim, you also should write the religion every person written in Wikipedia has, i.e. that Beckham is jew. Or is it not that important when people is not muslim? 188.113.95.213 (talk) 17:27, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Why? There aren't that many people whose religion has received significant coverage in reliable sources. And I think you'll find footballers' religions are often listed when reliably sourced. – PeeJay 01:11, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's where you're wrong. Many famous people talks about their religion in all types of media, Beckham to, but only people that are muslims gets their religion typed in big letters on Wikipedia, just like Pogba. And thats funny when people like Beckham are much more religious than Pogba is. 188.113.95.213 (talk) 08:56, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Have you actually read David Beckham's article? It quite explicitly mentions his religion, so why are you claiming it doesn't? Furthermore, what evidence do you have that Beckham is "more religious" than Paul Pogba? Finally, what basis do you have for claiming that Pogba's religion is written "in big letters" here? The article says "he is a Muslim" in one location and "he is a practising Muslim" in another. I'll agree that two mentions is too many, but you're here arguing that it shouldn't be mentioned at all when Pogba himself has said how important his religion is to him, and I'm pretty sure he's been on multiple pilgrimages to Mecca. You're talking nonsense, big boy. – PeeJay 11:25, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Beckham's many buddhist ceremonial symbols has nothing to do with him being jew. So you're wrong. And Pogba cannot be so much muslim that you can write it, with him taking all the drugs ana alcohol all the time. 149.7.162.57 (talk) 10:53, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Doping suspension

[edit]

The suspension doesn’t end in 2028, he was provisionally suspended back in September 2023 and it has been announced in 2024 that he’s banned until 20th August 2027, not February 2028. The ban does backdate to the test, and the ban starts when he first tested positive. So my edit will be changing the contract with Suspended from football to being 2023-2027, instead of 2024-2028. I will leave you the chance to discuss the upcoming edit before me, sources are below.
