"Personal and Social Items". Record. Emerald Hill, Victoria. 9 December 1911. p. 2. A well represented meeting of ladies interested in the establishment of a free kindergarten for the children of South Melbourne was held at Mrs. James Alston's on Thursday. The past students of the Loreto Convent were the prime movers in the matter, and to these young ladies is due much praise. The Rev. Prior Kindelan occupied the chair. Mrs. Champlin, of the Union of Free Kindergartens, gave an address on why and how these kindergartens were formed. Dr. Edith Barrett spoke on the kindergatens from her point of view. Donations to the amount of £60 were given in, and Rev. Father Collins also donated the use of two rooms and a piano. Apologies for non-attendance were received from Mrs. Alfred Deakin and Mrs. Wischer. His Grace the Archbishop of Melbourne, Dr. Edith Barrett, and the Mayoress of South Melbourne have kindly consented to be patrons.
"Social Notes". The Australasian. Melbourne. 19 October 1915. p. 42. The Misses Hyams, Kent House, South Yarra, are arranging a plain and fancy dress ball with the object of raising funds for the Rest Home in Wirth's Arena. An influential committee has been formed, including Mrs. S. T. Staughton, Miss Ada Armytage, Mrs. James Alston, Mrs. Fred McCubbin, Mrs. Beazley, Mrs. A. Wellington, Dr. and Mrs. Soilleux, Mrs. H. S. K. Ward, Dr. Shuttleworth, Mrs. Prout Webb, and Mrs. Stanhope O'Connor, Their Excellencies the Governor-General and Lady Helen Munro Ferguson, also His Excellency the Governor and Lady Stanley, have granted their patronage to the ball, which will be carried out on Egyptian lines. The hall is to be decorated with an Egyptian scheme, and it is hoped that the costumes worn will be in keeping. The ball will be held in the St. Kilda Town Hall on Wednesday, October 27, and there will be very little initial expense, as the use of the hall has been given and Mrs. J. Alston is providing the band. The promoters hope that those who can will take cushions to the ball, as these will help to carry out the Egyptian scheme, and subsequently will be of service to the wounded soldiers at the Rest Home.
