Gay Icon Project

[edit]

In my effort to merge the now-deleted list from the article Gay icon to the Gay icons category, I have added this page to the category. I engaged in this effort as a "human script", adding everyone from the list to the category, bypassing the fact-checking stage. That is what I am relying on you to do. Please check the article Gay icon and make a judgment as to whether this person or group fits the category. By distributing this task from the regular editors of one article to the regular editors of several articles, I believe that the task of fact-checking this information can be expedited. Thank you very much. Philwelch 22:19, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Name change

[edit]

The article stated this:

'On January 20, 1953, Van Doren signed a contract with Universal Studios. The studio had big plans for her, hoping she would bring the same kind of success that 20th Century Fox had with Marilyn Monroe, the reigning sex symbol of the era. Van Doren, whose signing day coincided with the inauguration of President Eisenhower, was given the first name Mamie for Ike's wife, Mamie Eisenhower, and the last name Van Doren as a good-natured dig at fellow blonde and buxom star Jayne Mansfield, who claimed to possess the genius-caliber IQ of 163.'

This is untrue. Jayne Mansfield was not in Hollywood in January of 1953, she was still a student at SMU in Texas. Jayne was not in the industry yet so Mamie changing her last name as a dig to Jayne is impossible. I have changed that part of the paragraph. Hilljayne (talk) 23:22, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jonathon Ross's `Incredibly Strange Film Book' has a completely different story - he says the studio thought she looked Dutch and should have a Dutch-sounding name. I'd include this in the article but I don't have the source to hand for the exact quote. Ravenclaw (talk) 01:03, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Whereas it is so difficult to locate, it should be clearly marked name_change. Why bury her identity?

Thank You,

All of them?

[edit]

Why is the list of competing sex symbols in the Universal's "Marilyn" section getting so long? Is it really necessary to include almost every single blonde bombshell and Monroe-wanna-be in Hollywood, see the paragraph:

Many of Van Doren's film roles showcased her ample curves, and her on screen wardrobe usually consisted of tight sweaters, low-cut blouses, form-fitting dresses, and daring (for the era) swimsuits. While she and other blonde bombshell contemporaries as Cleo Moore, Sheree North, Joi Lansing, Greta Thyssen, and Barbara Nichols did not attain the same level of superstar status as Marilyn Monroe, Van Doren did become a very famous star and notable Hollywood sex symbol.

This latest name (of Greta Thyssen) has also been added to the Barbara Nichols, Cleo Moore and Jayne Mansfield articles. Shearonink (talk) 23:32, 28 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Simpson's mention

[edit]

She's mentioned in a Simpson's episode in season 19, the one Homer's mother dies. Mr. Barnes is talking to her ashes, saying something to the effect that he and such a beautiful young lady (Homer's mother) could have "shared the world". When asked by one of his bodyguards if he's realised he's talking to a bag of ashes, he retorts: "I've seen your wife, she's no Mamie Van Doren...". That's how I came to this article, if someone finds this interesting, please add it to the text with the proper reference.--Darwinius (talk) 21:56, 15 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Photo

[edit]

The photo, while current, doesn't convey the 'pin-up girl' attributes that made her a sex symbol imo. 24.84.79.163 (talk) 04:08, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

removing sentence

[edit]

I'm removing the following sentence: "His painting of Van Doren was on the July cover of Esquire." The July 1951 Esquire does not have a Vargas painting on it, not Van Doren or anyone else. Elsquared (talk) 03:18, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I just checked again. There is a small image in the upper corner of a model, but she has dark hair. Doubtful that it's Mamie. Elsquared (talk) 03:20, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox photo

[edit]

I don't think you could have found a more unflattering photo of her to use for her Infobox if you tried. It's embarrassing. Was it posted by a Jayne Mansfield fan? Most Hollywood actress Wikipedia profiles have photos from the peak of their careers, not from their senior years. I don't see why Van Doren shouldn't be given a little more dignity on what is undoubtedly her most public profile online. 69.125.134.86 (talk) 21:46, 3 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How about you find a photo that Wikipedia can *use* under its rules and guidelines. It's not as easy as you might think, the image has to be CC-By-SA, can't be under copyright, etc. Take a look at Wikipedia Image Use Policy. Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 22:46, 3 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox image... again...

[edit]

Today the user IceyCDC has been putting their own artwork into the article. The image is not notable, nor is the artist. Therefore I've been removing it.

Also, they've been changing the infobox image to this drawing which is a copyright violation. It has a copyright symbol in the image and comes from this site where no free license is stated or implied.

I'm trying to layout my objections to IceyCDC's actions here to avoid an edit war. Let's see if they respond... They've ignored my concerns in my edit summaries thus far. Dismas|(talk) 18:43, 31 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dweezil Zappa Music Video Appearance

[edit]

Mamie appears in the Dweezil Zappa music video, "My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama", circa 1988. She plays the "mama" of his girlfriend. ( She is even named checked, as the video is done as a fake movie trailer. ) 75.104.182.200 (talk) 23:27, 12 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

List of affairs

[edit]

The article (asof Jan 26, 2023) lists 13 names. However the Star-News article cited lists only 7 names besides fiancée Bo Belinsky: Burt Reynolds, Rock Hudson, Joe Namath, Jack Dempsey, Eddie Fisher, Steve McQueen, and Warren Beatty. There needs to be sources for the others. I already removed Johnny Carson and Elvis Presley, who are among those that Van Doren explicitly excluded, according to the Star-News, referencing Liz Smith. Repeated addition of copyvio and uncited material

[edit]

The assertion on http://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=Mamie_Van_Doren&diff=1205164261&oldid=1204986487 is uncited (although I suppose it may well be true) and there's no particular indication of why this is a notable fact. The accompanying video is an outright copyvio on Commons. The edit summary is an outright lie.

If Wcamp9 does not produce a cite I intend to remove it since it is uncited material in a BLP. Pinkbeast (talk) 23:26, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

sources and biography

[edit]

i know some really die-hard Mamie Van Doren fans, and i am sort of one too. Does someone have her biography to add information to the page Wcamp9 (talk) 12:33, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WordPress and WayBack

[edit]

As saources, I feel that WayBack Machine (Mamie Van Doren's old personal website which I feel may benifit the wiki page), and WordPress (Mamie's blog) are fit sources for this article despite policies. Wcamp9 (talk) 15:23, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sourcing

[edit]

We have to work on sources. The most reliable and most used source in the article is, by far, Playing the Field (1987), a book by Van Doren. We need more help with sourcing Wcamp9 (talk) 21:07, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We have a lack of trustable sources, only one autobiography (very gossipy) written about Van Doren's life. According to the biographies of living persons page, this would violate Wcamp9 (talk) 22:47, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions for improvements

[edit]

@Wcamp9:, following on from your comments at the GOCE here, I suggest the following edits to improve the article:

a) per WP:BLP, remove any content that cannot be sourced; this means anything tagged with [citation needed] or no source.
a ii) prefer secondary sources to primary ones and do not reply on primary sources for controversial or questionable material.
b) remove or rewrite unencycopaedic content, such as gossip, commentary, editoralism, padding/waffle, etc.
c) use sections appropriately; for example, move non-work-related content to a more appropriate section; move love-life content to "Personal life", writings can go in a "Writing" subsection of "Career", etc.
d) remove excess images, perhaps to a Gallery section. I see some of the images are up for deletion on Commons so that might prune them.

I hope this is useful for you. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 07:04, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

First marriage

[edit]

I found an article from 1948 proving that she and Jack Newman married that year. An article from 1949 states that she married on 3 September 1948 and separated 3 months later. The divorce was finalized on 6 May 1949. OscarL 14:34, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
