Werner Herzog

[edit]

Except of course, Werner Herzog is credited AS Shrimply in IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001348/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1 Egontech (talk) 19:43, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

But kindly take a look at the images I've linked to below; are you saying those are the same characters? They're demonstrably different. IMBD evidently has that incorrect. Why would they? Because this is a common mixup. I even had to explain it to a friend whom had recently watched the episode - it might just take multiple viewings.
We could argue about this ad nauseam based on internet instances, but please think about this point: If you're saying Werner Herzog is cast as a purple alien with long dreadlock-like hair, then why when he's recorded speaking is he orange with horns? Respectfully, BBlze1 (talk) 18:41, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Shrimply Pibbles has been listed near the bottom of this page, as voiced by Werner Herzog. I added a citation request because I'm fairly certain that this is incorrect. As I just stated on the second season's page (edit summary): Werner Herzog was not Shrimply Pibbles. I don't recall Shrimply Pibbles having any lines (he was unconscious for the whole episode). There seems to be confusion with the Unnamed Alien in Wheelchair, voiced by Werner Herzog (he gives the speech about his past interactions with humans). It seems evident that they are totally different aliens. Shrimply Pibbles' head has dreadlock-like tentacles, whereas the Unnamed Alien in Wheelchair has horn-like protrusions, and the colouration is different. Perhaps others can add their two-cents? BBlze1 (talk) 02:29, 21 August 2016 (UTC); edited 20:54, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Nevermind, someone's fixed it, so I guess they agreed with me on this :) BBlze1 (talk) 23:21, 3 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've fixed it again, but it seems a common mistake to mix up Herzog's cameo character, so the data will probably need to be corrected again in the future. (sorry no account -someguy, 12:11 AM, 9/21/2019)

I've fixed it too (a few times now) and added a phrase to try and elucidate the fact that people aren't getting that Shrimply Pibbles never actually spoke and there are 2 aliens being confused. BBlze1 (talk) 14:47, 9 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

For reference, here are 2 images which show how different the 2 characters are:

Morty's name

[edit]

Hey @Morty C-137: You' ve recently changed (diff) Morty's name from Morty Smith to Mortimer "Morty" Smith, Sr., but i believe this edit is not correct. As far as i remember this name has never been used in the show and there is no reliable source that could be cited either. You might have gotten this idea from here, but this is not a good example to follow with regard to maintaining an encyclopedic tone in the article. Both "Mortimer" and "senior" in Morty's name constitute original research. For a good example, you could take a look at List of Game of Thrones characters where Ned Stark's name is written as Eddard "Ned" Stark because we actually hear him being called "Eddard" in the show, but his son Robb Stark and Robin Arryn names don't include "Robert", because they were never called that in the show. Remember these are names of characters in a fictional world and not real people with given names. Thank you. -- ★ Radiphus ★ 16:00, 17 December 2017 (UTC) 18:06, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Radiphus: please stop. The name was LITERALLY used in the show. Here's a screengrab link: http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/rickandmorty/images/9/96/S1e7_my_horrible_father.png Morty C-137 (talk) 19:29, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Stop what exactly? Seeking consensus? The name in the book (better quality screengrab here) says "Mortimer Smith Jr.", a character that appeared only in s01e07 and has never been mentioned in the next 23 episodes of the show. In any case, i am talking about Morty's name, not his son's. Is there any source (in accordance with due and undue weight) that names him "Mortimer Smith, Sr."? If not, this is both incorrect information and original research. -- ★ Radiphus ★ 16:00, 17 December 2017 (UTC) 19:40, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Responding to request for community input at WT:TV. If the series never referred to Morty as Sr., then Sr. should be excluded. We shouldn't be applying real-world naming conventions to in-universe fictional characters. That might be cool at Wikia, but the standard is higher at Wikipedia. We don't create canon here. Also, in TV articles we tend to use character common names. If Sr. is not commonly used to refer to him, then it should be excluded based on editing norms. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 20:19, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Cyphoidbomb. Neither "Mortimer" nor "senior" have been used in reference to the character. -- ★ Radiphus ★ 16:00, 17 December 2017 (UTC) 20:23, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
When I said stop, Radiphus, I mean literally stop pretending that screenshots of the name Mortimer used in the show don't exist. I don't get what your deal is here - they clearly HAVE used the name Mortimer as the full first name for Morty. Morty C-137 (talk) 22:04, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
When has "Mortimer Smith Sr" been used in reference to Rick's grandson? -- ★ Radiphus ★ 16:00, 17 December 2017 (UTC) 22:06, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You want to drop the "Sr"??? Why the hell did you not make it clear that part was your objection? Morty C-137 (talk) 22:07, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
As i said in my first post: Both "Mortimer" and "senior" in Morty's name constitute original research. and as the involved administrator above has pointed out We shouldn't be applying real-world naming conventions to in-universe fictional characters. Is "Mortimer" commonly (if ever) used to refer to Rick's grandson? -- ★ Radiphus ★ 16:00, 17 December 2017 (UTC) 22:15, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I can not understand why this discussion has made you so angry. Do you still think that using the name of the character as it is commonly known is wrong? In any case, there is absolutely no reason to be upset over this content dispute. -- ★ Radiphus ★ 16:00, 17 December 2017 (UTC) 23:07, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The name has been defined and used visually on the show. You keep pretending it hasn't, and I don't get why. Perhaps you get some personal jollies out of trolling or something. Morty C-137 (talk) 23:52, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You are being rude. I am not questioning that "Morty" is a hypocorism of "Mortimer". I am asking you if "Mortimer" is being commonly used in reference to Rick's grandson. It's a simple "yes" or "no" question. -- ★ Radiphus ★ 16:00, 17 December 2017 (UTC) 00:11, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As expected, no reliable source referring to Morty as Mortimer has been presented. I believe it's time to go back to using the character's common name in accordance with what the involved adminstrator has stated above. -- ★ Radiphus ★ 16:00, 17 December 2017 (UTC) 01:10, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Less than an hour between two comments, and pretending again that the reliable source - the episode itself - has not been presented. Seriously, what is your issue? Morty C-137 (talk) 03:10, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The user keeps re-adding this information without providing a reliable source (because there isn't one) in regard to Morty's commonly used name in the series (it's in the title for crying out loud!). I have left them a message in their talk page, hoping they will be able to understand how Wikipedia works and how a "List of... characters" article is written. -- ★ Radiphus ★ 16:00, 17 December 2017 (UTC) 13:02, 10 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Fuck it, Radiphus is on to bad-faith page tagging and incivil threats. He can WP:OWN every page in this topic, I give up dealing with someone so abusive. Morty C-137 (talk) 18:20, 10 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Overview

[edit]

It's not incorrect. The fact is, that the Smith family in the first half of Season 1 were credited as "Main", and after that episode, the same cast played separate, but still identical, characters. Guest, not meaning "Guest Star". Yours Sincerely, HarrisonSteam (talk) 15:11, 17 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@HarrisonSteam: The table makes incorrect use of "main/guest/recurring" cast per WP:TVCAST, as it refers to characters and actors as guests, without them being credited as such or it refers to the an actor or actress as main, guest and recurring, all at the same time, depending on how many times one of the many characters they are voicing has appeared in a season. Furthermore, the table is both incomplete and inaccurate, as the actors lend their voices to dozens of characters and it would be impossible to mention all of them, as Rick and Morty is an an animated show with new characters appearing in almost every new episode. -- ★ Radiphus ★ 16:02, 17 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The cast table is not necessary for this series. WP:TVCAST: (my emphasis) "Cast tables (such as the one found at The Killing (U.S. TV series) § Cast) can be used as a visual representation of cast duration for multi-season programs but should not be used for programs with fewer than three seasons or where cast changes are minimal. Only cast members who have been part of the main cast for at least one season should be included. If a program has a separate article about casting, the table should only appear in that article or in the parent article but not both. A separate cast table for recurring cast can be included in articles listing characters and cast but should never be included in parent television series articles." The core list of four voice actors has not changed. 2013 press release 2017 press release. There are also some regular voice actors like Kari Wahlgren who voice a number of secondary parts. Compare with List of The Simpsons characters which does not have a cast table. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 17:34, 17 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Pedantic tables are less readable

[edit]

Can we maybe dispense with the notion that Chris Parnell plays a whole range of characters, all of whom go by "Jerry" and look exactly the same? We should use an effective definition of "character" which isn't vulnerable to whatever the next episode decides to do with tongue-in-cheek credits. Connor Behan (talk) 14:29, 22 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Is Space Beth a main character?

[edit]

I'm seeing a constant insistence (the latest one being from Duttakd that Space Beth is a main character, despite the fact that she only appears in two episodes and only has a major role in one of them. Personally, I'd say absolutely not for season 5 since she only appears for 10 seconds, and maybe for season 4 if she really is credited as main. Unnamed anon (talk) 17:50, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Dan Harmon confirmed space Beth was a main in this season even before it was released. Duttakd (talk) 19:07, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Duttakd: Can you give a link/source to that statement? If there is one, I'll agree that you're correct. Unnamed anon (talk) 21:06, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Unnamed Anon https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/ustv/a34685852/rick-and-morty-season-5-canon/ Duttakd (talk) 11:18, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

That source says nothing about her being a main character. It just says she wasn't a one-off, which is true in the most minimal sense as she only appeared briefly in one episode after her debut. Unnamed anon (talk) 20:44, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A lot of the content of this page needs to be changed

[edit]

Season 5 episode 10 changes everything. The main Rick isn't even from c-137. Heck, even Morty isn't Rick's true grandchild. And a lot of other content. Duttakd (talk) 14:13, 7 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please provide a source to back up these claims. RossButsy (talk) 14:44, 7 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Duttakd: Actually there is no reason to think "our" main Rick isn't c-137 Rick, we don't know what "our" main Morty's reality was actually called, we just hear "our" Rick called c-137.★Trekker (talk) 18:06, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Family tree objections

[edit]

Why does the family tree list more than one Morty? There is nothing to indicate that "Evil"/President Morty is more connected to the "main" family than any of the other countless Morty alt versions. And is it really necessary to list all the one-off related characters like the CHUDs, Morty Jr, Hemorrhage and the Ricklets? ★Trekker (talk) 18:11, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Stop adding Space Beth as a main character

[edit]

I don't care that she's not an alternate universe variant of Beth. She is still the same person voiced by the same actress, and other, vastly more plot-relevant variants like Rick Prime and Evil Morty don't get this treatment from some people. So stop adding her here and the season 6 page. I asked for a page protection a while back, I was told to do dispute resolution instead, so here we fucking are. The cast table

[edit]

I've been trying to figure out the best way to work the cast table. With their being several different versions of the characters, I think we should split the different versions, but only for the main cast, with only the primary Smith family being labeled as main characters and other Smiths appearing as guest or recurring characters. So basically, the main cast table would look like this:

Character Dimension Voice actor First appearance Season
1 2 3 4 5 6
Rick Sanchez[a] Dimension C-137 Justin Roiland "Pilot" Main
Morty Smith[a] Unspecified[b] Justin Roiland Main
Beth Smith[c] Sarah Chalke Main Guest
Jerry Smith[d] Chris Parnell Main Guest Guest
Summer Smith[e] Spencer Grammer Main Guest
Beth Smith[c] Dimension C-131 Sarah Chalke "Rick Potion #9" Main
Jerry Smith[d] Chris Parnell Main Guest
Summer Smith[e] Spencer Grammer Main
Jerry Smith[d] Unspecified[f] "Mortynight Run" Chris Parnell Main
  1. ^ a b In addition to the featured versions of Rick and Morty, Justin Roiland voices several other versions of the characters.
  2. ^ While originally the Smith family featured from "Pilot" through "Rick Potion #9" was believed to be from Dimension C-137, the sixth season premiere revealed the family to be from a different dimension than Rick.
  3. ^ a b In addition to the featured versions of Beth, Sarah Chalke also voices several other versions of the character.
  4. ^ a b c In addition to the featured versions of Jerry, Chris Parnell also voices several other versions of the character.
  5. ^ a b In addition to the featured versions of Summer, Spencer Grammer also voices several other versions of the character.
  6. ^ This Jerry is mistaken as and switched with the Jerry from Dimension C-131 in "Mortynight Run."

I feel like the distinction is worth noting due to the original Smith families return in the beginning of season three as well as both Jerrys returning in "Solaricks" not really being apparent in the current layout. I do understand why they were combined, as the old table was very clunky listing multiple of the less important versions of the Smith family (such as Evil Morty, Doofus Rick, etc) as well, but I feel like the table should at the very least show the primary versions of the family. Also I'm not sure why the Space Cruiser is listed as main character. I'm not sure if it was already voted on to combine them, and I don't want to start an editing war and completely respect if the current table is the community census, but I figured I'd put this in the talk page to see what people think and if I should change it or not. Oh I like this. Can we implement this? Canadienne Comedienne (talk) 15:30, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Family tree on character pages

[edit]

A lot of character articles such as Morty Smith, Summer Smith and Evil Morty have the same "Family tree" section. Should this be removed as synthesis i.e. a collection of plot details from disparate sources, made into a new work that no individual source establishes? Or as indiscriminate information, as several characters are extremely minor?

In general the character articles need an out-of-universe focus (more on interviews and reviews). — Bilorv (talk) 19:09, 17 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Removed. I presume this is the same template that was already deleted this year after discussion. A lot of cruft in the character articles needs to go and we need more analytic and summative content like Special:Diff/1191605765, whether it's from reviewers, cast and crew or academics. — Bilorv (talk) 15:52, 24 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
