"Giant Octopus" quote

The "giant octopus" quote has been attributed to a speech by Hylan reported in the New York Times March 27, 1922. Although I have found many references to the quote in books, blogs and across the web, I have been unable to track down the quote to the Times report itself. I had no results searching the Times archive Can anyone do better? Geoff ^{Who, me?} 14:26, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

Cross purposes

user:Epicgenius : After having the edit open for about 12 hours working on this article (which have been doing for several days), I saw that you and I have been working at cross purposes. In fact, I could not understand how my reference system had been redone until I saved my edits (and re-edits) and saw that you came up with a new design. @AnthroMimus: My apologies, I didn't know you'd recently added these references. Actually, all I did was convert {{harvnb}} to {{sfn}} so that <ref></ref> tags don't need reference names (like <ref name="ReferenceA"></ref>).

re:Epicgenius No apologies necessary. It's a wiki; I just find it difficult to add chunks of text on a page that is being actively edited, because I need the "preview" to see what it looks like after all the markup language, so I keep the same edit open for a while and when I save there is a mess when I have to merge. I have no particular interest in this subject, except I wanted to link another article to it, and found that for a two-time Mayor it was remarkably thin. (In fact, it mainly quoted his political enemies and their biographers, on what appeared to be stereotypes. It would be like an article on Koch devoted to his bald head or Giuliani to his lisp.) Anyway my note was to point out to you that i had (inadvertently) screwed up your division between reference cites and explanatory notes, something I had considered but found that it was not workable since the explanatory notes depend on the same cites in the reference cites. But that was just my opinion. I have no strong feeling one way or the other. But I was surprised to find the edits (after I pushed "save page") since no one had been working on the page. @AnthroMimus: I understand. For the future, I suggest that if you want to work on an article for a long time, you could create it in a note pad or test it in your user sandbox first. The session can log out automatically after an hour or so. Anyway, you've made some very useful additions to this article, and I encourage you to expand it if you want. I have engaged to spend two weeks fixing another article pending GA review (although I often underestimate how much time I have to spend on something; Hylan is an example, I did not intend to go so deep into the weeds). I promise to return (deo volente) to fill out the substantive part of his career (judicial and mayoral), for which I have much material. In the interim, feel free to work your editorial magic, and when I return I will to the extent I can, conform the new material to your style. (BTW, doing a re-write on sandbox or a text editor doesn't really help. If, e.g., I spend 12 hours on a re-write, if bots or others have been making minor changes, it means that I have to spend much time comparing the new text with mine and making indiviual pastes to the new article, which is almost as tedious as doing the re-write in the first place.) @Epicgenius:: I am almost done iwth the other thing I promised, but I just looked in here. I don't know if you realized that my tampering with your edits was purely inadverdent. (I think I separated the inline cites in the notes and made them references instead.) I really did not mean to change what you did, I was just trying to recover from an edit conflict and I didn't see what you were dong. Please feel free to restore your edits, and when I get back to this very shortly I will follow your lead on the editorial design. (Once I figure the coding out.)
