Jargon

The following sentence is both uncited and unexplained "but they are genetically distinct (2n=56 for Beisa and 2n=58 for Gemsbok)". What does the 2n refer to, and how does the small difference amount to anything significant? I am a biologist and even I am not instantly sure what it means (I could hazard a guess or find out I guess), so God knows what a lay person would make of it.
