Sinners is an upcoming American supernatural horror film written and directed by Ryan Coogler. Set in the 1930s in Jim Crow-era Southern United States, the film stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers who return to their hometown.[2] The film also features Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Benson Miller, Li Jun Li, and Delroy Lindo.

Coogler began developing the genre film through his production company Proximity Media by January 2024, when Jordan was cast. Warner Bros. Pictures acquired distribution rights the next month following a bidding war, and casting for additional roles took place in April, ahead of the start of filming that month. Filming wrapped in July 2024.

Sinners is scheduled to be released in the United States on April 18, 2025.[3]

Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers Smoke and Stack (Michael B. Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.[4]

In January 2024, an untitled period film (rumored to take place in the Jim Crow-era South and involve the undead) from writer, director, and producer Ryan Coogler was reported to be in development through his production company Proximity Media, with longtime collaborator Michael B. Jordan cast in the lead role.[5][6] Sony Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Universal Pictures were in a bidding war to acquire the distribution rights to the film, which carried a budget of around $90 million.[7] The following month, Warner Bros. won the distribution rights to the film.[6]

Additional cast members were announced in April and May 2024.[8] Principal photography began in New Orleans on April 13, 2024, under the working title Grilled Cheese, with Autumn Durald Arkapaw as cinematographer, and wrapped on July 17.[9][10][11] It was shot using a combination of IMAX 15-perf 65 mm and Panavision Panaflex 65 mm cameras.[12][13] The production spent $67.6 million on-location in Louisiana.[14]

Release

Sinners is scheduled to be released in the United States on April 18, 2025. It was previously scheduled for release on March 7, 2025, but was delayed to April (swapping dates with Mickey 17) to allow for more time needed in post-production due to the scarcity of film stock labs for the project, which uses IMAX film cameras.[15][16][17]
